Chapter 1: "The Brinewall Legacy"
by James Jacobs

When a trove of fireworks falls into the hands of the goblins of Brinestump Marsh, the people of Sandpoint fear an explosive invasion. But there’s more afoot in the soggy wilderness than goblin hijinks and dangerous pyrotechnics. An investigation reveals mysteries and menaces aplenty, but also a treasure holding the answer to not just one of Varisia’s greatest mysteries, but a conspiracy spanning continents and empires. Can the adventurers piece together a puzzle that links the owner of a sleepy village tavern to the unsolved destruction of a fortress-settlement? And can they withstand the ancient forces and secret destiny that have waited for them for decades?

This volume of Pathfinder Adventure Path launches the Jade Regent Adventure Path and includes:

  • “The Brinewall Legacy,” a Pathfinder RPG adventure for 1st-level characters, by James Jacobs
  • An exploration of the hinterlands surrounding the town of Sandpoint, a region that’s anything but peaceful, by James Jacobs
  • A look into the mysteries of the oni, cunning fiends that can assume humanoid forms, by Mike Shel
  • Murder in a distant land in the Pathfinder’s Journal, by Dave Gross
  • Four new monsters by James Jacobs and Tim Nightengale

Each monthly full-color softcover 96-page Pathfinder Adventure Path volume contains an in-depth adventure scenario, stats for several new monsters, and support articles meant to give Game Masters additional material to expand their campaign. Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes use the Open Game License and work with both the Pathfinder RPG and the standard 3.5 fantasy RPG rules set.

Amzaing start

4/5

My reviews use bullet points, just how I roll.

The Good: -Compelling story especially if you play a goblin.
-decent story
-Travel feels like actual travel
-Good fights throughout

The Bad: -Eastern treasure kind of a gyp (pun intended.)

The Ugly: -Poor NPC design at times this is frustrating.
-Get the feeling the travel theme is going to become a grind? trust your gut it will.

Overall: I almost want to ding this by another star based solely on the treasure but the story was just plain amazing.

Amazing Read!

4/5

I know it's a little silly to be writing a review before running this in one of my games, but I can't help but feel that I have a decent understanding of all of the base problems and glories associated with it. So far I have this campaign planned and am REALLY looking forward to it, (though we need to wait a few months since it will be a sequel to our Rise of The Runelords campaign that we're currently running). Since it's my turn to DM next amongst my role-playing group I'm glad I got to run the Asian themed campaign since I indulge in that sort of thing.

To start off the beginning was a little disheartening at first seeing as how the party kind of has to meet up with the DM's help, but afterword the campaign really kicks off without much effort. The sandbox style of play in the swamp was really neat, and added a sense of wonder where, and what my party will do when they are roaming around in there. The encounter with the Goblins was interesting, but afterwords I had a little issue since I'm not sure if every group will be entirely ready to chase after skeletons when they were sent into the swamp to hunt Goblins. Though incentive to do so is provided I'm still thinking that complications may arise since it seems like a shot in the dark type of option.

Afterwords it seems like they kind of forced players into the caravan when the book even mentions more efficient alternatives, but none the less it gives reasons for it. The caravan encounters are nice since after book 2 of Serpent's Skull I don't think I could handle another extremely elongated random encounters section in a book. I have read all six Jade Regent books, and am really thankful for these rules later on. While I know I could just have a game without these encounters it just wouldn't give the thrills of a long and dangerous journey without some unknowns happening along the way.

Once the group finally makes it to the end dungeon of Brinewall it was a massive dungeon crawl that seems like it most certainly will take several days to successfully clear out. To be honest I'm a little worried as of how long it will take to get my group through that dungeon so I'm almost wondering if I have to cut a few rooms out entirely to keep the game flowing.

All in all though there were plenty of good challenges, and at the very least this makes for great reading material. I will be playing this in a few months, and I have honestly never been so excited to play a campaign, but it is a little disheartening knowing how long it will take before the group actually manages to make it to Tian Xia since this is the only campaign that visits the continent.

Storming Brinewall

4/5

First, before I start, I would like to say that this is the first time I have DMed anything. That being said, I did find The Brinewall Legacy to be a very fun, and engaging story; Starting off with a very simple adventure kickoff, and leading to a much more complex and detailed plot. Now that's not saying that the adventure is perfect. The second part was not enjoyable. Seeing as this is my first time DMing, I decided not to run the caravan rules due to still working to master the normal setting rules, therefor there was a lot more prep work needed for that second part, and compared to the rest...it fell flat. Even using what was presented for the caravan rules as a base, it still fell flat compared to the rest of the adventure. Despite that, I, and my players, enjoyed this adventure, and I am looking forward to continuing into the next installment.

A great kickoff!

4/5

For me this was a great beginning of a great Adventure Path. Me and my group just finished the adventure and we are just in the beginning of the next part. Below are my thoughts about the Brinewall Legacy.

Part 1, Fires Over Brinestump
I had mixed feelings about the beginning in Brinestump Marsh. First and foremost I loved the comeback of Sandpoint and it's citizens, it really brings back memories from Paizo's very first Adventure Path. Just seeing NPC's like Shalelu, Ameiko and the sheriff made my PC's day, which was nice to see.
One thing I thought was a bit dissapointing was the bleak start, it wasn't really bad but it could've been a more strong intro to Jade Regent.
The places in the marsh was well written, although my players weren't that interested in free- roaming at that moment, so it didn't turn out to a that great blast. There were two exceptions though: the Licktoad village and the skeleton encounters (including Tutsamu). It was almost adorable to see the player's reunion with the hilariously crazy little goblins, and they enjoyed every second of slashing oversized heads and setting huts on fire using the stolen fireworks. Also the skeletons were fun in an other kind of way, because they were really tough encounters for the PC's and provided a real challenge for the group. In their whole career they've never met skeletons (and their DR 5), and it was pure excitement for me to see their faces when they realized how dangerous DR can be at level 1.

Part 2, The Legacy's Lure
It was here the caravan rules were introduced. They gave more depth to the adventuring and both me and my players liked the amount of customization that they provided. Adding wagons, hiring people and spending caravan feats was quite a good time for them, and I think positively of that mechanic in Jade Regent.
In exception of the making of the caravan, this was the weakest part of the adventure. The part is a road trip crossing over whole Varisia, and the space given to it in the book is not even 2 pages. It feels like everything is up to the GM if part 2 will be fun or not. If well prepared, this might even turn out to the greatest part of the whole installment. If your not prepared for making a 500 miles journey interesting though (like I was), it turns out ugly. It is this that takes a star from my review, because if a that big event happens I would like the authors to write some more info and things about it. Sure, we've got the Random Caravan Encounters, but I don't think that they are enough for a that great voyage.

Part 3, Ruins of Brinewall
This was the most awesome part of the adventure. Both me and them had a great time in Brinewall, and my initial fear that the castle's enormous size would bore the PC's were gone with the wind. They learned to hate Kikonu very quickly because of his constant dimension doors, managed to get tricked into drinking poison by the quickling Buttersnips and the group's cavalier successfully charmed the hideous ogrekin Muthildah among lots of wonderful things. Unfortunately they barely touched the second floor, but that didn't really affect the fun factor of the last part. After a thrilling final boss fight (everybody had under 10 HP when they managed to kill Nindinzego) the PC's looted their own magic items (customized for them) and got the mysterious visions that marked the end of the Brinewall Legacy. Splendid!

After the adventure itself there were some other things written like an interesting article about the Oni, evil spirit demons from the other side of the world. Also there was a chapter about the Sandpoint Hinterlands and the monthly Bestiary with nice contents, nothing outstanding though. One thing I liked was the installment's Pathfinder Journal that's about Paizo's own chelaxian mascots Radovan and Count Jeggare and a mystery in the Dragon Empires. The author Dave Gross delivers a nice entry and I'm excited to read more from him.

Overall the Brinewall Legacy is a grand opening to Jade Regent, and I can't wait to see what more this Adventure Path has to offer...

Not as good as I hoped

3/5

Having read the reviews on Paizo, as well as the free player's guide, I was excited to run this campaign with my Wednesday group. The general premise of Jade Regent: The Brinewall Legacy is that the party will be traveling, with a carvan of some very interesting NPCs, around the world. However, after getting through the first book, we are a bit disappointed with several aspects.

First, the good. We enjoyed the start up and plot set up. Sandpoint, and the adventures around there were rather enjoyable. The swamp was a lot of fun. The Goblin camp was probably larger than it needed to be, but it was a nice setup for what was to come. I wish the other 2/3rds of the adventure were this well rounded.

The party enjoyed the interaction with the main NPCs. Jade Regent features a relationship mechanic that would not feel out of place in something like Mass Effect. I was concerned that they would come across as gimmicky, especially given that I ran this with a more experienced set of pen and paper players who shun the idea of computer gaming conventions working their way into the game. In a way, the mechanics do feel a bit fake and forced. For example, players rush when they're about to level to get their diplomacy checks with NPCs. However, at the same time, these tend to turn into some very funny moments. Over time we are seeing these relationships blossom and grow together. It's a nice touch, and something I will probably integrate into future homebrews.

Now, the not-so-good. For a game that is focused on those four NPCs, it would have been nice to see a bit more written on them. Perhaps some cut scenes, or direction given to the GM at certain parts in the adventure would help...or some more background and personality info. The two pages for each one is nice, but could use more info.

While the "level 1" section of this AP module was generally well done, the Level 2 (Trip to Brinewall from Sandpoint) and Level 3 (Brinewall Castle) had challenges.

The trip to Brinewall, which is a 500 mile trip, gets just a few paragraphs. Given the setup (The party has to prepare the caravan, plot their course, etc), it really falls flat and is a huge missed opportunity. There are tables for random encounters. The book suggests that by the time the Party is really ready to take on the castle, they should be level 3, implying that there should be a lot going on during the trip. Now, this certainly gives GM's free reign to be creative, but I buy adventure paths because I do not have a lot of prep time. GM's, take my advice... spend some time and work some adventure in on the way. Make the trip memorable. Your players deserve better than what's there.

Conversely, Brinewall castle is a beast. This three floor dungeon crawl has good flavor and some very interesting things going on it. The layout is fantastic. However, it's a bit too large. I would have loved to take some rooms (or even a floor) out of this one, and have that dedicated to the trip from earlier. Despite the pages dedicated to the castle, because of its size, some rooms are quite empty, and several things (Such as any treasure at the end) are left completely to the GM. The battles were very rarely challenging. Depending on how the party approaches the castle, they can quite possibly watch the BBEG beaten by his ex-lover without lifting a finger to help (They will, of course, help, but the fact is that it has to be one of the easiest boss encounters I've ever run).

My advice to GM's running Jade Regent: The Brinewall Legacy... be prepared to do a bit more prep work than with most other AP's.

The players also felt that the plot reveals were too sporadic...and when they took place, it was a lot of information at once (especially the one at the end). I don't believe there's a lot DM's can do to alleviate this (unless they are real creative).

Some of my players have completed other Paizo adventures such as The Rise of the Runelords. Those who have agree with me that Jade Regent: The Brinewall Legacy falls short of the mark set by those excellent productions in terms of overall quality and story telling. However, as I mentioned before, there are a number of things done right here, and plenty of fun to be had. The overall plot and the premise of taking a trip around the world is still quite interesting, and I know we're looking forward to see where the travels take them next. The interactions with the major NPCs, encouraged and spurred by the relationship mechanics, with the right party (those who favor RP'ing at the table) help to inject much needed life into the adventure. So while I am a bit disappointed, and list some definitive shortcomings, there is plenty of fun to be found here.

I'll review the other books as we continue to push forward. In my Friday group, we're a few session away from finshing the first book in Carrion Crown. Onward!

Brinewall is kinda far, yeah, but Brinestump Marsh is not.

Well, I can vouch for the "just barely on time" part, but "poorly" is far from the truth. Once James's stuff does come in, it requires a lot less development time than pretty much any other writer, so it's almost ok that it's not as timely as it oughta be. ALMOST.

Not really, he's a bit more subtle (but not too much).

Like "We'd rather stay in the city and keep an eye on the situation, there seems to be a lot going on between the crime guilds and stuff (the previous 3 adventures)" - "No, your patron assures you that everything is kept under control by his agents, he'd send you to the frontier keep that stopped responding a month ago" - "Well, OK" - "When you get back to the city, you find it in flames, ruined and savaged by rebels who have acted without serious opposition" - "Ahrrr, let's join them, just to screw up the story".

Spoiler:

Conquered Jorgenfist and the library. And for some reason the topic of Amieko resurfaced - the players were talking about where to go and take a nap after the battle. I wanted to add something cool about her to the story, but for the love of holy I couldn't recall just why is she supposed to be so important.

So I looked down my notes and made them find a tome about armor designs of Golarion - and one page, they found a cool-looking jadeite samurai armor, with annotation "ceremonial armor of Kaijitsu family"...

Now they keep tabs on Ameiko in case something weird happens :)

I always wondered what she was doing in Sandpoint, seemed rather odd. Though I am not smart enough to think into James thoughts and see like some here did. Though I must say bravo and good job to Paizo for linking the world together like this (i.e. AP's RotRL - Jade Regent) as I know my friend was super excited to hear about the tie-in, and he didn't even get to meet her as he joined the RotRL later. We both commented this is why we enjoy playing AP's though we are not your typical "play book adventures/module" players. Thats shows the quality of your work, also that I subscribed.

Though I just wonder if I should run this AP (as is), or just change it to suit the level 16 character who finished RotRL AP. Though the story seems so good I think I will run it using their Vassals/Followers, and making them play those characters :).

Jade Regent, which is assumed to take place AFTER Rise of the Runelords, assumes Tsuto is dead. So if you run this adventure "before" Rise of the Runelords, that's not an issue anyway.

Given how many months away this is, I don't really expect an answer yet, but...

Will there be a Tian Xia World Guide, comparable to the Inner Sea World Guide? Because man, I have a feeling it would take a lot of work to put that together. The Inner Sea World Guide at least had the 3.5 Campaign Setting to build off of - with Tian Xia, I imagine everything would have to be from scratch.

There won't be a Tian-Xia world guide comparable to the upcoming Inner Sea World Guide... but we WILL be heavily supporting Tian-Xia with multiple books.

Just wondering if Tian Xia will get a hard cover treatment, maybe more akin to the original Campaign setting in size or slightly smaller? It's apparent that the classes (or the archetypes) are being approached through the rulebooks and not a setting book(which makes me very happy by the way). I also would anticipate there being several articles on different aspects and location of Tian Xia in the actual AP. That leaves the Player's Companion line (which I could see approaching some of the more flavor rules for the players) and a Campaign setting book. I'd like to see a treatment in hardcover, though I understand that the beautiful monster you're currently shipping is an exception to size and girth for Campaign setting books.

Actually, I quoted that. You specifically asked if it would be comparable to the current book shipping, which he said it wouldn't. I asked if it would be a hardback book of a smaller size.

Unless they have secretly changed their minds, it has been said several times in Tian Xia-specific threads elsewhere in the forums that there will not be a hardcover book at all for Tian Xia. In other words, there will not be a Tian Xia World Guide done the way the Inner Sea World Guide is done, instead there will be a series of smaller softcover books for it. I think there will be one in the Companion line and one in the Campaign Setting line, and I thought there was mention of one more, but I can't remember right now what it was supposed to be.

There are no plans to do a hardcover Tian Xia book at this time.

We'll cover it in a lot of smaller books, but not in a hardcover. Maybe someday down the road in a few years when we've got enough to fill a Hardcover book we'll revisit the possibility... but for now, not enough resources to do one with everything else we've got planned for the rest of the year.

Actually, I quoted that. You specifically asked if it would be comparable to the current book shipping, which he said it wouldn't. I asked if it would be a hardback book of a smaller size.

Haha, woops. I thought it was you that hadn't read carefully... my bad.

I created a character for RotRL who came from Brinewall (before the "event"). In the end the character had to drop out after a level or two of the AP and ended up taking over the Hagfish Tavern as an NPC. Now I wonder if he might come out of retirement, especially as he had a friendly cooking related rivalry with Ameiko. Only problem is we will probably need a new AP before Jade Regent starts :(

I guess we will see

Wow. That is the perfect weapon to use against me. I hurt, sir. I hurt.

I pass it everyday to and from work. Did you know they have now started brewing their own beers?

Is that worth something to you, sir?

Will there be anything in this AP to address Rise of the Runelords?

For example, will Ameiko's age vary depending on if I've already run Runelords?

I have to figure out how to account for the happenings of Runelords seeing as how my PC's brought a lot of wealth to Sandpoint (and decided to settle there after the AP).

I'd hate to wave away their history as if it never happened.

IIRC, this has been addressed before, and the answer is yes. There will be info on how RotRL affects Jade Reagent.

Question, If someone wanted to play a samurai or a ninja, being as they dont start in tian xia but are going there, what are some ideas for starting this off?

One of the monasteries founded on the teachings native to the Tian Xia region also included a couple of teachers knowledgable in the code of the samurai and the techniques of the ninja. Now your PC wants to journey to the motherland as it were.

I'm sure Paizo will have a better method. But that would be my solution.

Hmmmm ... so maybe you feel like this? (link)

My favourite part of that series is how they treat Gandalf like a bazooka.

How do you manage it, man?

Unpaid overtime is the overworked person's best friend (and if you love your job, you don't mind a minute of it ;) You're wife on the other hand...)

Wait! If James is writing the adventure, What's his homunculus up to??

Doing what all familiars should do. Staying off the battlegrid while providing James with a +2 to Profession (Writing) ;)

Holy Coincidence Batman - back when running RotRL 2 years ago I've dropped hints about the Kaijitsu family being something much more than they appear to be.

That must have been Erik and James using the brand new Orbital Mind Control Laser!

My friend has been writing an a home campaign set in the Mwangi Expanse involving the ancient secrets of the Shori. A Paizo book recently published exactly the campaign he's been writing (which saves him some work for the last bit of the campaign because a lot of it's already been written!). Sometimes Paizo are just good at subconsciously telegraphing their future plans.

I recall reading somewhere races appropriate/unique to Tian Xia would be provided in a book somewhere. But that plan may have changed or I might have just dreamt it up (I do that sometimes. My memory isn't the best).

IMO having to adapt future campaigns to the events in past campaigns is what's best about running multiple campaigns in the same setting.

a detailed look at the village of Sandpoint and its environs,

Really? A whole load of bleh.

Passing on this one. Might pick it up when it actually gets to Tian Xia.

Doubly disappointing. Seems a vastly premature AP.

Oh really? There was no hardcover guide to the Inner Sea available for Rise of the Runelords. Does that mean it was premature as well? In other words, do you really need a detailed look at an entire continent, just to play three adventures in a single country (that will no doubt itself receive coverage from the Companion and/or Chronicle line) within that continent? Of course not.
