Good intro to a very good adventure

I have been running this for my friends and they love the adventure path. Really solid beginning.


Good for self-starting players

I ran this adventure mostly as-is for a group of 5 players (4 veterans and 1 new player). We used the medium experience track. It took about 24 hours of play, not including leveling, over 6 4-hour sessions. They really enjoyed it. The only complaint was that the XP gain was slow. The encounter locations are loaded with intriguing details and creative connections between them. The terrain for the battles is varied and tactically complex. Almost every encounter has tips for how it could be handled in an unconventional way, but there's plenty of fights if that's what the group is in the mood for. It was a blast to GM.

Why only 4 stars? The adventure relies a little too heavily on random encounters to fill out its experience count, and some of the most plot-relevant and interesting details are difficult to convey to the players, especially the BBEG's origin story.

The back material is a basic explanation of hex exploration (which is basically a reminder of how long it takes to travel, plus an xp award), and a gazetteer on Brevoy. The latter is a good place to start for anyone who wants to take the AP in a political direction. The fiction is entertaining and the monsters are solid and useful. The carbuncle is so entertaining, I wish I had remembered to include it when it was CR appropriate.

If your players are self-starters with a drive to investigate and you want an AP that you and your players can develop into your own story, this is a great AP for you.

This is the AP Ive been waiting for. I played in it once before and HATED. It. What a difference a new gaming group makes! This game finally gives PC's the chance to not only rule a kingdom but build it from the ground up! My group had endless fun building our kingdom and protecting it from various villians.

There are freely available software tools that can help you.

SomePDF Image Extractor extracts all images from a PDF file, including the maps.

GIMP helps you to cut, modify and scale maps.

PosteRazor helps you to transfer very big images like correctly scaled maps into PDFs you can then print, cut and glue together to get a beautiful map.

I did this with a map from this adventure, and the result was quite good; it took ~1 hour to complete.

Yeah I can do that... but my point is that I saw the adventure in the store, read the back and thought it sounded cool. Paid the $20 for it and then opened the sealed pack to find that it "recommends" spending another $15 for the outpost map and then I can download the pdf for another $15 so that I can print them off... after I take them into photoshop to resize. A bit of a pain in the @ss if you ask me... not to mention the extra cost when I thought I was buying a complete product. I'd gladly pay a bit more up front to get the maps and player handouts included in the hard copy.


Yeah, I don't know of any of their adventure products that have pull outs. Also, that bandit outpost map is only good for the first location really. It's better to just have a blank mat to draw the battle scenes on. You can't really print out maps from the PDF's of size to use as a battle mat since it loses too much definition.

And the sealing isn't something that's normal from them, so that might be a local custom. I know my FLGS doesn't have the modules sealed. It makes the walk by sale that much more difficult if you can't flip through it and look at the art inside.

Practically speaking, I use a blank battlemat for virtually everything, and I *am* a subscriber.

Only if you are a subscriber to the Adventure Path. This late in the game (4th Chapter shipped, 5th Chapter next week), you could subscribe and get the PDF to Chapter 4 onward, but you would have to do it quickly. PDFs for the early Chapters would have to be purchased separately.

Nope.

Forcing an adventure to start on a set date sets an adventure up to self-obsolete. We don't want people 5 years from now thinking that they can't run an adventure like Kingmaker because they didn't happen to buy it in 2010.

Also, we don't want folks thinking that they have to run adventure paths in order. You can run Kingmaker and follow it up with Rise of the Runelords if you want.

Basically... ALL of our adventures have a set "start date" of "today." They can begin on any day, in other words.

Now, that said, they also usually have implied starts that coincide roughly with the month in which they were published. But we tend to avoid saying in print when an adventure starts for the reasons I cite above.


Heya

Quick question on the Mine in Stolen Lands. It ref's you to the next module for details on use, but other than developing the Kingdom, there is no real detail there that I could find.

Is there errata on mining it? Any idea of size of the mine or longevity? Seems like a big option for low level folks to acquire funding and my players are very interested

Not sure if its best to post here or in the Rules Questions forum but anyway, in KM1 (AP31) there is a creature called "Dweomercat" which has a special ability (spoilered):

My question:

As I understand it, swift actions may only be performed during the turn of the creature using it. Only immediate (or readied/delayed) actions can be used when it is not the creatures turn. If that is correct, then isn't this ability effectively useless? Or, is this actually an errata and the action type should have been "immediate" not "swift"?

I dunno about the intent here, but it's not technically useless if the cat readys an action to take a full attack on a caster.

So, would somebody PLEASE tell me where the heck the basement stairs of the fort at the end of the adventure come up into the rest of the fort???? I swear I have read the adventure cover to cover and I still have no idea where my players are supposed to find the stairs into the basement.

I don't get it. What's the point of putting an additional bestiary into the book with a bunch of awesome new monsters if you don't connect them (especially the most interesting ones) in any way with the quest? There was plenty of opportunity. Why aren't there any Thawns or Carbuncles on the random encounter table?


I placed an advanced Thawn to ambush the PC's (6 person party) at the gold mine encounter for my group. Imagine their surprise when the rocks he's been chucking at them turn out to be gold nuggets.

I Think it may have been the DM running it, but just be aware the potential is there. The jokes concerning quest npcs, and researching gunpowder I think finally got to our DM, and we had to stop playing. If you are going to run this one, make you you put the work into making it more than another night of world of warcraft - at a table.

I agree with the others that suggest your suspicion that it was your GM is correct. I'm currently playing in a campaign of Kingmaker and our GM is fantastic. For rolls like the one you mention (Public Scandal), he actually rolls those events before we get to the table, so he has developed what that public scandal actually IS and gives us a chance to roleplay the situation and our responses. There have been times when he gives us the story of whatever was rolled but then - because we all agreed that we wanted to move on to something more interesting, or because it was so late at night - there were a few times where he informed us of a problem that we simply responded to with a roll for that month. Typically, though, we have addressed that issue at the next session; even if it was just to say "my character wouldn't do anything about that."

No. In order for you get to get the Kingmaker PDFs for free you would have had to be a subscriber at the time the Kingmaker books were released.

The tatzlwyrm would have been updated to Pathfinder Roleplaying Game statistics in this volume—the "Hollow's Last Hope" version would have been for 3.5.


Can someone help me get my head around this? The charter that comes later in the game, serious cash money for taking out a fortress, awesome. But the first charter of the game, thematically, I don't get it. "I hereby give you permission to explore a bandit ridden forest," seems to be the gist of it, and every time I read through it I always think, "and the payment is...?"

I'm sure I'm missing something. There is no way a campaign that is otherwise perfectly water-tight can have such a gaping hole. What did I miss?

I tried to get an order in from the local hooby store who has a distributer that usually gets all of the Pathfinder stuff.

Long story short the distributer does'nt have a listing to order this Adventure or some of the other ones I wanted to get.

So are some of the Pathfinder Adventures only per the site here to buy (hardcopy)? Kind of what the hobby store owner was thinking, but I see in other posts some game stores do have copies for sale.

Do some distributers only have access to order some of these adventures?

The Hobby store and I are trying to figure this out.

If it's one of the items that Paizo's nearly sold out of (like this one), then generally they are not in the distribution chain anymore. So, your FLGS wouldn't be able to order a new copy. Otherwise, they should be able to order things through the normal distribution chain.

They blog every few months what items they're getting really low on, like here.

Once the stock falls below a certain level, we stop shipping it to distribution, though some distributors might still have it in their warehouses for a time after that. This product is one of those items that are in short supply and we're limiting it to direct sales only.


Thanks for the info, I guess I will have to look at other Pathfinder Adventures and hope for comps in the future like we got for Rise of the Runnelords.

So anything on this list a hobby store would not have access to.

Hey I wanted to pick up a print copy of Kingmaker Part 1.

Paizo Doesnt have it and Amazon is out of stock but has buying options starting at over $400 (?!?!?!?)

No one on Ebay currently is selling it.

We're out of stock on it and we don't do reprints of individual AP volumes. This was a very popular Adventure Path, and a lot of people snatched up the copies when we did have them.

Jetpack Comics in Rochester, NH has a print copy of Stolen Lands. Saw it today and joked to myself if I should buy it and put it up on Ebay. I'm not sure if they have an online store but it might be worth giving them a call and maybe they can ship it to you.


I'm sure it's come up before but the fact that you would refuse to print additional copies is straight out absurdity. If you ran out of Core Rulebooks you would print more. You have a product here people want to buy (in a physical sense, a lot of people hate PDFs for this purpose) and you're just refusing their money.

When Amazon has USED copies of this and the second part of the AP starting around $300 it clearly points to the publisher WAY, WAY messing up their estimation of demand and making a major mistake, which it seems they are trying to pretend didn't happen.

I would LOVE to buy this repackaged in a manor similar to the Rise of the Runelords anniversary edition - which it has been made extremely clear WON'T be happening to other AP's as they need to sell stock of what they have left. But why the hell would I buy parts 3-6 IF I CAN'T GET PARTS 1 and 2? This shows an ultimate level of hypocritical business idiocy on Paizo's part, which they don't generally show and seem to be applying only in select places places on specific products. IT MAKES NO SENSE?!?!?

I would say please, but no pleases. You will either:

1. Print more copies of you're low stock AP modules so that new customers can at least buy an entire copy of the AP OR

2. Repackage it Rise of Runelords Anniversary style to fulfill this purpose.

Because it's not cost effective for them to do so. It would cost them more money to reprint these than the money they would get from you purchasing it.

This post gives a good view into why they don't do reprints of the AP hardcopies.

If there was ever an AP compilation, I would bet my life savings on Kingmaker as the most popular choice.


That's fine, and I was pretty aware that was the thinking. But as a potential customer all you can do is yell for what you want and see if they will provide it. I run my own business too, and know how hard it is to scrounge up sales. But when you have people telling you they want something it takes a pretty extreme situation not to provide it.

I obviously don't know costings and numbers, but if they have supplies for the latter parts and not the first it shows they miscalculated what they needed. And from a business point of view I can't imagine it would cost them more overall to print extra copies of the oversold editions so that they are then able to sell the excess stock they have sitting in their warehouse of the other copies that are no good to anyone (I'm not going to buy half a jigsaw when I can't buy the first half).

I can sort of see their subscription point, but I think that misses the greater point - I would think very few subscribers will stay so forever. When you're getting two huge campaigns per year I would think the majority of gamers would be struggling to get through that much content, and would therefore be backlogging from the start, at some point ceasing their subscription due to having far more than they need.

But the bigger point for me is that I have no intention of subscribing. I don't need that much. I imagine there are many, MANY people who also feel as I do. And these people who just want to buy what seems like a good product are unable to, which means Paizo are stuck with all the other excess copies and no use for them.

I don't expect them to change their ways - I only came on to vent and to hope to add weight to this argument in the back of their head. But if copies are selling for $3-400 second hand unless Paizo are doing the shifty and working this to their advantage under the table there is NO WAY that they couldn't arrange an additional print run, however short (with the amount of books they are producing their is no way their supplier would not do a print run however small they needed) and not have it be profitable - or AT WORST break even with the benefit of gaining additional customer loyalty.

Oh, if Paizo did everything people wanted over all those years, we would have:

6 campaign settings
3 rulesets
10 product lines
boxed sets
real-life sized Goblin sculptures
at least three video games
soundtracks
Pathfinder food
Pathfinder wool mittens
etc. etc.

and one dead company that reacted to every "I want to give you my money if you do X" request.

Also, you're not aware how publishing works. I do, because one of my part-time jobs is an editor of legal manuals. Re-printing something is NOT as easy as you think. Since most of the people who wanted to buy the book already have it, a new print run has a far much more diminished target group.

And because there are some costs in printing that you need to take regardless if it's the first print run or a subsequent one, you're getting far less returns UNLESS the product is still a seller (an "evergreen" book such as the Core Rulebook). So your first print run earns you X per book, and subsequent print runs earn you, say, half of X. Since your printing budget (and the printing company's output) isn't infinite, you are faced with a choice - reprint an old book, earn less on it and hold up your printer OR print new stuff that earns you full value.

Since RPG publishing industry is hardly a super profitable one, the latter option prevails unless the product is hot or you can afford for it to be a loss leader (hello, Beginner Box!)

This is something that Paizo can have precise numbers on, so presumably they are much better informed than you or me.

But, I have been a subscriber since Rise of the Runelords, and there are still plenty of charter subscribers too.

Many subscribers enjoy reading adventure material they may never run. I am GMing RotRL and playing in CotCT but I still loved reading Jade Regent.


Also yelling, insulting, and demanding for what you want is a good way to not be heard from a company.

I'm going to be running part 1 of this real soon. I've usually only run homebrew stuff.

Any advice on how best to run this? I have the PDF.

The party will probably be a magus, a fighter or cavalier, and a druid or ranger archer.


Kingmaker has the singular capacity to accommodate vast swaths of homebrew expansion upon the skeleton presented to you. I highly recommend expanding upon the AP/campaign as you see fit for your group. Getting player feedback should be of great benefit as well.

I strongly encourage perusing the Kingmaker subforum and mine the heck out of it for awesome ideas for fleshing out your campaign. Everything from expanding upon the fey elements, the political elements, pushing the minutiae into the background to focus upon the rest of the campaign ... there are dozens of options and ideas out there.


Any chance of reprinting 1 & 2, if only to toss them in a box set with all the 3's-6's you still have?


Remains the best AP chapter I have played....nothing has been so enjoyable since, full of real choice, and really a mod where the pc's are front and centre.


I understand certain things not being feasible, but, Why would I ever buy this? I want this, I'd kinda sell my newborn son, well, first I'd have to get a girl pregnant then sell him for this, but, my point is, I want this, and if the price got jacked up, I'd still pay it happily over the 300 or so dollars it would take me to get it otherwise. But perhaps we could get some kind of agreement going to get our pdfs run up at a print shop?
