I made my first Wizard last night and had an incredibility hard time with picking spells. Flipping back and forth was tedious. The biggest issue I had is that powers and spells are in the same area. I believe there should be a section for spells and then a section for powers.

When you are looking through the spells and just looking at the traits such as Evocation or Illusion to find your school you tend to stop dead when you get to a trait section that has no school. Then you realize, oh wait, this is a power... It is jarring and makes finding spells rough.

I also know it has never been done in the books but it would be nice if spells were (not in the spell lists but spell section) laid out as such with headers for each level:

Cantrips:
All Cantrips by alpha

1st Level Spells:
All 1st level spells by alpha

2nd Level Spells:
All 2nd level spells by alpha

etc....

Powers:
You could then just do Powers by level & alpha or just alpha.

Just my opinion from someone who doesn't usually play a caster but then when I wanted to had a confusing time finding information, more so than in 1st edition.

@Dire Ursus I have played it and can tell you so far, from what I experienced and feel, can be expressed by the OP's subject line. I play it and I just kind of feel empty. I had some fun playing it but sometimes during and the entire time after, something just wasn't right. I will need to play more but overall, my current opinion is staying with 1e for homegames/PFS for when I want a more tactically immersive rpg and 5e for when I just want to relax and rp more. Or other systems when I want something different.

I will continue to playtest 2e with an open mind and see where it takes me.

You mean the lore that is published in, core books, monster manuals, supplements, and companion guides throughout 1e? The same lore that also give them negatives to Cha in multiple books and call them out as ugly and destructive, basically a blight to all races? I can't find an inconsistency with the lore and entries in the books. I am actually curious because I never got that from anything published for the Golarion world setting.

4 people marked this as a favorite.

@PossibleCabbage You do realize that Golarion Goblins stat array as a monster class has them at: "Str 11, Dex 15, Con 12, Int 10, Wis 9, Cha 6"

and the race guide at:

"+4 Dexterity, –2 Strength, –2 Charisma: Goblins are fast, but weak and unpleasant to be around. "

In no way were Golarion Goblins ever Charismatic. This is a complete 180 from what they were in terms of Cha. If anything they need to become more intelligent and more charismatic to start "fitting" in to society in my opinion which would have had me drop Cha negative and give a Int bonus. Then just adjust Dex down one to balance it.

I am for the +Dex, +Int camp as well!

I said this in my Giant Totem post. I believe all classes should get a set number of skills to be trained in, say 6 but the player gets to pick which skills those are. I think each class should then get to pick either 3 signature skills of their choosing or get rid of signature altogether and give each class 2 skills they are experts at. This way it gives diversity to every character.

I was just reading this and coming from someone who played to level 17 with my Titan Mauler in 1e this is both lacking and disappointing. I was hoping to rebuild. Only doubling your rage mod is weak as is a barbarian not being able to benefit from a bard's inspire courage. Rage should not be a conditional modifier or inspire courage shouldn't be. This totem leaves a bad taste in my mouth for the future of the titan mauler.

I just want to emphasize, missing your attack roll already sucks, to further double down on punishing players is not fun for anyone, I never been at a table, and with over 20 years I've been at lots of tables, where players wanted to play with fumble rules.

Does the wizard casting magic missle get a fumble chance? How many monsters with fumble rules will hurt the wizard catching scorching Ray, or have fumble rules just another way to punish players who made the mistake of playing the fighter or the rogue.

What rogue will want to search for traps or attempt a disarm traps when. Fumble rules are on the table? Just have the Uber sorcerer with resonance to spare use the monster summoning wand to trigger the trap.

I really can't get over what a colossal design mistake bringing back fumble rules are. Find another way to give monsters cool reactions. All you're doing his making people feel even worse when they roll badly.

Your experiences and others are different. I have played multiple games where we use fumble rules and love them! It adds a lot of fun. Have a weapon snatched out of my hands because I biffed a roll seems awesome. Now I have to think and react with my next action or turn.

The only things I am concerned with are:

1) Using a Shield is an action (and the implications of this on TWF)

Someone specifically trained in the use of a shield should be able to attack and defend simultaneously without much effort. I don't mind this being a mechanic for someone who is not proficient in shields, but for someone who is, you should get your shield bonus automatically, and the Shield Reaction should just be one of your reaction options.

2) Opportunity Attacks being only a default option for Fighters and requiring something similar to a feat for other classes.

This just feels like something anyone should be able to do. I get that anyone CAN do it by spending one of their Actions to prepare an attack, but this doesn't make sense to me.

I am already envisioning an instance where one of my players is standing next to a caster who is casting a spell that will ultimately kill a character.

GM - "The necromancer starts casting a spell."
Player - "I hit him!"
GM - "Do you have the Attack of Opportunity Reaction?"
Player - "No. Do I need it?"
GM - "Well, as per the rules, only fighters can make AoOs, but there is a feat."
Player - "I have to have special training to do this?" *Reaches over to the guy sitting next to him and Gib-Slaps him*
Player 2 - "Hey, don't use me as an example!"
GM - "Well, you see, if I let you make an AoO without having the special fighter training or the feat, then I am devaluing the fighter's class feature and that feat, so I can't let you do it."
Player - "Fine, let's just continue."
GM - *clears throat* "The necromancer finishes his spell. Roll a Fortitude Save."
Player - *rolls dice* "15?"
GM - "Sorry, that's not quite enough. Finger of Death kills you."
Player - "SON OF A @#$%&!!!"

I keep seeing people go off about only fighters having AoO's. They are not the only ones. From what I am getting every class will have "AoOs" of one sort or another. In your example the player may not be able to "attack" him if he is not a fighter but if he is spellcaster or someone in the party is, they can reaction with counterspell. Or maybe you're a Monk so you can't "attack" but your reaction is a comabt maneuver. Who know's at this point.

Also in your example, literally, the necromancer takes a 5' step back and still casts it in PF1e, you fail and die. No change unless you are a reach character. We do not know even how reach will work with what we have heard either.

Edit: Also in PF2e from what we are seeing the caster could still take an action for guarded step and then still cast the spell negating the AoO. This new system seems to allow more options for "AoO's" such as a party member who can counterspell saving you from a distance (speculation) instead of only being able to attack with an AoO. In PF1e that same wizard that counterspells in PF2e would not have the opportunity to save you. (Once again anything PF2e is a little bit of listening to what has been played and the majority is speculation).

If you listen to the playtest on glasscannon one of the characters crit fumbles a skill on society. He gets incorrect information, but the other characters are able to correct his mistake. Taken in that context I really like the crit fumble of skills idea.

I don't believe it is good for me to have these kinds of discussions with other people. I obviously do not understand this game as it is played. I am a relic.

I hope you do continue to have these conversations with the community. I understand it can be frustrating and there will be a lot of times where people wont agree or understand your point of view. However, without a community of varying opinions and understandings one doesn't promote growth. I appreciate your understanding and point of view and learn much from everyone I debate with, which also helps me grow as an individual, player, and GM.

In the end it can help me see something I may not have seen before or come to a different understanding/interpretation of the rules I never saw before. The whole point anyway is to work towards a better system as a community going forward into P2e.

I see lots of folks asking for very high level content. Keep in mind that encounters at those high levels are very long and complex. It would be almost impossible to scale an encounter at high levels that can be completed in a 4 to 5 hour slot, let alone 3 encounters plus an optional.

If you have ever played a tier 10-11 special at a Con, you will understand what I am saying.

If the campaign was to go past the current 12-15 tier in 2.0, we as players will have to accept longer adventures that may take up to 10 hours to complete and multiple sessions for the same rewards.

That is very true, with the current rules. However, with the new rule set and combat this may change, making higher level combat more viable and quicker, at least more than it is now.

I believe the boons should not carry over. As others have said, having a fresh start for all with everyone on a level playing field is great. Since 1e characters will not carry over why carry anything else from that edition over?

@Sprada I believe it will all depend on your local lodge but I know our location will be running all three (1e, 2e, and sfs) until interest is lost. Our store doesn't decide what we offer our lodge and players do. Paizo has said that they will continue to support 1e PFS play.

I like the idea of removing factions as a whole and implementing the departments as Trscroggs said. However, for me scrolls and spells are too similar and with the addition of the alchemist being in the new core, maybe an overhaul of the departments to something like alchemy/magic/swords or the like and allow for the PCs to choose which department they are working in that scenario. Furthering progress with rewards down the line after reporting these and having a total that must be met by all of society IRL. Also, having tasks assigned by the department/area you are working for and only having three would tidy things up and have the benefit of the Pathfinders actually progressing the lodge and not their individual faction motives. You know: Explore, Report, Cooperate. :-)

1.) I would love to see content up to level 20. Even being able to retire the character at 21. I have a hard time finding home games to be in and 99% of the time never get to play characters at higher levels. Being able to try out a level 20 power a few times would be great.

2. I also agree with tightening the tier levels up.

3. For me the 3xp system is fine because if you want to play longer all you have to do is slow track and if we get content at higher levels that is even more time with that character.

Long time lurker, infrequent poster.

I have been on the forums for some time, actually its funny, I went and looked at my first post - May 2, 2012, 08:32 am. I cannot believe it has been so long.

I just wanted to say, even though the boards have changed, in many different directions, it is always nice to get on and see familiar faces (names :-) )

Like others have said, I enjoy seeing members like Toz, Kobold Cleaver, BNW, NH (by the way love your Silly Serpents Skull thread) and many others when I am on the boards. It gives me the feeling that, even though change is inevitable, there will always be someone/something familiar within that change. To me these members are the "iconic characters" of the boards.

But as we continue to move forward look to meet new members and watch for these new members to become "iconic" in their own right.

Thank you to all of the members on these boards for their continued love of gaming, no matter what medium, and keeping life entertaining for those of us who lurk more than post. :-) Maybe one day Paizo will make a list of Iconic posters... ;-)

Agree with majority, as long as the 5' does not happen after the AS, or any other action for that matter, since you cannot take any other action after using dimension door.

So,

Standard > 5' > AS

or

5' > Standard > AS

But Not

AS > 5' > Standard

or

AS > Standard > 5'

I grew up on 2nd Ed D&D and 3.X. I personally love the feel of pencil and paper, books, and the like. I will always buy physical copies over e-copies any day. Looking into the future and wanting to be a store owner myself, I try and support local stores whenever possible. Does it cost me extra? Yeah sure, but in return I get the social interaction that I enjoy. Does it mean I do not save money and put it towards other books? Yeah. But in the end, I know I have supported a store owner whose dream was probably to run a game store. Then I get to go back when I decide to make a purchase and have fun all over again.

Nothing wrong with buying online or e-copies, it is just not for me. :-)

One of the recent campaigns, which was quite long ago, I played in had only one death before it ended. It was my character. I loved this character. He was a pirate who had a silver tongue. Oh his crazy adventures! Paid a group of Paladins to cross a mountain and then robbed them blind right before they departed on friendly terms. Anyway, he ended up blowing himself and the villain up as a last resort.

The GM asked me what I wanted to do, or I should say, what my character wanted. I wanted to continue to play, so the rest of my party gathered my parts, stuffed them in a bag of holding for burial and headed out of the dungeon. Along the way the GM introduced an NPC that offered resurrection through his mistress and wove a whole story to bring me back as a side mission.

I gladly sat out from playing my character, I think it may have been two six hour sessions, while the party quested. The even cooler part, was that I got to play an NPC that helped the group but also had hidden agendas.

It was an epic quest and was handled wonderfully. I never once missed out on the campaign. But that is assuming you have a GM who can work on the fly and is understanding. :-)

Sorry guys for the delay. Hope the move is going well Liliana!

I have a job interview tomorrow for a promotional position. If I get it, it will mean no more OT or weekend work. My schedule will also shift to 8-4:30 so posts will come at night only instead of all over the place.

I will try and keep posting to move it along. Thanks for understanding!

Kortus slams his face back and forth pulling apple after apple out of the barrel. Until the ref finals blows a whistle signalling him to stop. "Wow..." Is all the ref can say. "I will count the apples and let you know how many you got!"

The ref goes to gather the apples. The kids are ecstatic! Hoots and hollers can be heard from all around! Giggles explode as Kortus finishes.

Back at the Tug-O-War Anaach and Remy both grab the rope. The ref blows the whistle and the tug is on. The two half-orcs pull with all of there might.

Strength: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Aid: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

The two ruffian half-orcs are severely out matched and both go flying into the mud. The crowd erupts with cheers and howls of laughter as the two half-orcs wallow in the mud.

I think that rez should be a role playing experience and a rare one. If it takes the players off track to save a friend, build a small side scenario in the AP. I think for me as a player the realistic nature of hey your dead makes it more fun.

If player's get attached to there characters telling them that, should they die they cannot be rezed might make the group more cautious, strategize more.

Hello. I am a newer GM to the forum. I have tried to run two other games. The first was a couple of years ago and I had to drop it because of RL. The other game a started up was for two friends who both had to quit. I have taken GM material from several sources that I have found appealing, so you may have heard some of this before.

I have been rp'ing for over 17 years, mostly D&D 3.X & PF.

I am looking for 4 players for this PbP with the possibility of a 5th PC if I get some extraordinary submissions.

For those of you who do not know about RotR:

In the sleepy coastal town of Sandpoint, evil is brewing. An attack by crazed goblins reveals the shadows of a forgotten past returning to threaten the town-and perhaps all of Varisia. The Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path begins with this goblin raid and takes players on an epic journey through the land of Varisia as they track a cult of serial killers, fight backwoods ogres, stop an advancing army of stone giants, delve into ancient dungeons, and finally face off against a wizard-king in his ancient mountaintop city.

Character Creation Guidelines:

Starting level: 1st, Medium xp advancement.
Stats: 20 point buy
Hit Points: Max at first level, Half round up after.
Starting Gold: Average starting gold.
Alignment: Non-Evil
Classes: Core
Races: Core
Traits: 2. One must be a campaign trait from RotR. Traits may picked from the Advanced Player's Guide (APG) only. Rich Parents is not available.
Just Core material, please do not ask to play anything else.

Character Background:

*Please use the campaign trait picked for this AP as part of your background.

*I would like a detailed background. Being a Sandpoint native is helpful but not required and will not improve chances of being picked.

*Backgrounds are the foundations we build to make or characters believable. They also provide hooks for the GM to engage your character more deeply in the story. Old enemies, lost relatives, and famous weapons make for terrific potential plot-lines, which makes everyone the winner. I’m not asking for a short story or a novel here. Keep it skirt-length (long enough to cover the important details, but short enough to keep me interested). A few paragraphs would suffice. Make sure to cover any driving events in your character's life, specific enemies (if any), and future goals. The more I have to hook into, the more likely you are to feel your character engaged in the adventure.

Player Expectations:

*Post as often as is necessary, but keep it regular. I tend to check the boards less often on the weekends, and multiple times a day during the week. Ideally, we’d have at least 1 post per day from everyone, as needed, but I understand that’s not always possible. I am going to do my best to keep this game moving. If you only check the boards on the weekends, this is not the PbP for you.
Perseverance is preferred. This is a long lasting story arc split into multiple modules with multiple parts each. If you don't think you can devote the time to hang around for at least a module at a time, this is not the PbP for you.

*Communication is key. Whether it is letting me know of a vacation where you might not have internet access, questions about some minutiae of game play, or simple clarifications; communication is how I gauge how engaged my players are, and how I can tune the adventure so that everyone is enjoying themselves. If you don’t think it’s important to let the other players and GM know when you are not going to be able to post for a few days, this is not the PbP for you.

*Roleplaying. As mentioned above, I like for my players to take the lead in a goodly portion of the adventure. Cues and clues will be given to prod, but I'd rather you go off on a wild hare chase rather than be spoon fed copied portions of the AP over and over. If rolling dice is your thing, and your character is the strong silent type, this is not the PbP for you.

*Quality posting. Know how you get when that hamburger you ordered doesn't look anything like the picture on the poster? That's how I feel about craptastic posts. No one (but you) is forcing you to rush a post out the door, so take your time with it. If you prefer to let the others do the talking, while you toss in one word responses, and like to roll for social skills with no explanations, this is not the PbP for you.

*Maps, pictures and handouts will by provided through Photobucket. I will attach links in the gameplay thread. I have not decided how I will run battle maps yet and will probably ask for help from my players if they have experience.

*If you have played any part of the RotR AP before I ask that you do not apply. Thanks.

*Have fun! This is one of the most important, because if you aren't having fun, why are you playing? Of course, this applies to everyone else too. So, don't be rude. If you want to have fun, then this is the PbP for you!

GM Review:

I am more interested in character concepts and stories than I am in how many times you can hit yourself in the head before you black out. Concept and background are just flat out more important to me than specific roles and the crunch. Don’t ask me what roles need filling. It does not matter. I would rather play with an all-rogue group that really gets into the storytelling than have the perfect 4/5 role setup.

What I want from you right now:

*I want your character concept (class & focus) and background, preferably in its own alias (though that’s just to help me keep track of everything). If you want to put together the crunch also, knock yourself out. I also want you to give me 4 things:

*A list of driving forces, aspirations and/or secret desires.

*An IC post to give me an idea of your role playing style. The more interesting the better. Include the IC post in the submission post and in your profile as shown below.

*Please submit everything in one post if at all possible. You may dot for interest but try to keep posting in the recruitment section to a minimum. Sorry but it will help me sort through everything. You may ask me any questions you want and I will get to it when I have the chance to do so.

*Please set your alias profile up as such: Profile Set-Up

Recruitment will be open until February 28th at 6:00pm est. I will then go through the submissions one final time and then make my decisions within a week of recruitment closure.

One final thing:
I would be very interested in playing an AP that Paizo has produced and would love to rotate chapters. As an example I would run RotR Chapter 1 and then someone could run Chapter 1 of another AP of the groups choosing. Then switch back to RotR. This would be the same players, I would just switch out with one of them. If interested please let me know in a PM. Thanks!

Del,

Thanks to you and the crew of SCARAB for putting on a fantastic convention once again. This has been my favorite year so far! I hope every who got sick gets a speedy recovery!

Also thank you Del for running Realm of the Fellknight Queen! The party was great and the GM'ing as always was wonderful! Gozer revels in the slaughter of the queen!

Thank you also to all of the GM's that ran this year! Without you guys it could not have happened.

Once last shout out to Amanda Cole for her amazing GM'ing of the The Temple of Empyreal Enlightenment! I did not laugh harder at any other table! Thank for continuing the session at the hotel after 1am to finish out the game! Great GM'ing!

Alright this page is going to start out as character creation and pbp rules. Please do not post here until I tell you. We will begin with character creation.

Character Creation:
All characters will be made out of the Pathfinder Core Rulebook (PFCRB).

All classes and races in the PFCRB are available.

All rules apply for making characters from the PFCRB.

Character stat rolling: (Please use the dice roller available here on the site, you can do this by looking at the format text below and can be done by typing [.d.i.c.e.].1d20.[./.d.i.c.e.] I put periods in so it wouldn't actually come up.) Player's will roll 4d6 and then drop the lowest one, repeating this six times. For example: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 5, 2) = 14 So this stat would end up being 12

Please roll these stats in one post by repeating the dice format six times in the post.

I will be using a modifiable .pdf to keep track of your characters. I would like everyone if possible to also list your character and stats under the alias option in "My Account". Please see mine under Gozer "Bone Splitter" as an example.

That should do it for the character section. If you have any questions about creation please post them here after we start.

I have been role playing for over 12 years. I am new to GMing in pbp sessions and have not had a lot of practice GMing many games. I am looking at starting a pbp with other beginners of pbp. It will be slow starting and playing, at least at first. I will be using D&D modules but using the PFCRB. If you are interested please post in this section. I am looking for a group of at least four but no more than six PC's. I may have a few player' already. But I am not sure yet. But as long as you're new or have only played a few times (on pbp) I will take the first posts in the order they appear. Thanks!

I would love to play Amoung the Dead! Or anything for that matter. But I would be down for Amoung the Dead. I have a second level now. Woot. Congrats on the job Goon! I think if possible the one at 5 and the one at 6 would be good. I talked to my work today and I can be somewhat to pretty flexible. But if I can't make every game session I can't. I would rather have to miss some games rather than making it to where other people couldn't play at all.

On a side note if anyone wanted to help me get started on being a GM and understanding what needs to be done, I am down to learn and fill in so some of our other GM's can play. I can see how it would be a drag to always GM.

Another note was it StrangePackages who GM'ed We Be Goblins?
