EDIT: Realized I accidentally wrote "ass" instead of "all" and "S**#er" instead of "Shifter" in places, so that's fixed now. This is why you don't write reviews when sleep-deprived, it makes you seem more foulmouthed than you intend to.
As someone who was sorely disappointed by the Shifter class as a whole and by the Oozemorph class in particular, I'm loving what I'm seeing so far. A minor nitpick: the description of Ooze Form could use some more concise language, I had to re-read it a few times to understand it because it used the word "form" many times in quick succession.
Just saw a copy of this, and I feel... not great. I enjoy some of the archetypes, and a few feats are neat, but the Shifter (the main reason I was planning on picking up the book) seems lackluster. While not TERRIBLE in the same way Kineticist without 3pp is, a class that has one niche and is outdone in that niche by many other options never fails to make me sad. You can literally be a better shapeshifter by being a Druid or Beastmorph, and you can even outdo a Shifter by being a Hunter and blowing your pet's brains out.
Once again, not the worst class that's been crapped out in an official Paizo publication, but quite dissapointing to me. Even the cool ooze archetype falls victim to poor word choices that make it almost unplayable in some campaigns.
Currently reading through PoW to re-familiarize myself with the classes, as my last GM allowed the partial initiating archetypes but not full initiators. For now I'm thinking Aegis/Warder to be the ultimate meatshield, and possibly Aberrant Aegis/Fiendbound Marauder for WRASSLIN EVERYTHING.
1) What kind of dungeon lord are you? Aim for something in the CR 9 range, whether that be a level 10 goblin shaman or a young blue dragon, or something in between.
2) What kind of dungeon floor did you lord over? (Those chosen will have to actually build this floor)
3) A sketch of your character's personality and goals.
4) Some discussion of what you, as a player, would like to do/see in this campaign.
1) My character is Old Merk, a Deep One with psychic levels (or potentially psion levels if psionics are allowed) who is extremely disappointed in the new generation of evil. Why, back in Old Merk's day, monsters were truly monstrous in both mind and body, with dark magic out the wazoo! Nowadays it just a bunch of whipper-snappers playing at being scary monsters. Kids these days...
2) Most of his level is taken up by a deep pool of salt water, with the only way across the pool being very rickety wooden plank bridges that float on the surface. Of course, the water is filled with minions; Sahuagin, giant octopuses, lacedons, and some very ill-tempered mutant sea bass lurk below, and do their best to ruin adventurer's days. Merk would have liked to add sharks as well, but they're both endangered and expensive.
3) Merk is a curmudgeony old bastard who is convinced that everything was better back in the olden days (its is unclear as to what olden days he's talking about, since Deep Ones don'y really age) and that the forces of evil would be much better off if they just listened to his long-winded advice. He is blunt, crude, and pretty disgusting, but deep down he does actually care about his fellow dungeon bosses. After all, if something bad happened to them, he wouldn't be able to dispense evil life advice.
His goals are fairly simplistic: dispense his dubious wisdom, kill and eat adventurers, and keep himself alive. He has an immense fear of permadeath: he's lived a long time, and has every intention to keep on living.
4) I'm interested in a light-hearted romp with a good mixture of roleplay, fights, and general sillyness. In a word: Shenanigans.
S'quig-aly has existed for centuries, floating in the dark void of space and watching the world from above. She always wanted to join and have fun with the humans, but she couldn't find a safe way down. One day, she was brought into the world by a nice man in a black robe alnd skull mask, and she was so exited that she immediately hugged him, ony letting go when she heard something crack. She thanked the nice man (who by this point was laying on the ground and gasping horribly) and immediately ran out into the world to explore.
Since then, S'quig-aly has been travelling, meeting new people, and generally having the time of her life. Sure, most people scream in horror when they see her, and nobody seems to want to hug her, but it sure beats floating around in the void alone!
Ten-minute background:
Five things about S'quig-aly:
1.) She's from the cold, uncaring void between the stars.
2.) She's extremely happy most of the time and loves being around people.
3.) She doesn't understand why people are freaked out by her. She's made of the same basic molecules, why does it matter if they're in completely different places?
4.) She loves hugs, cute things, and hugging cute things. Her definition of "cute" is kind of out there, though.
5.) She wants to blend in with humans, but is remarkably bad at it.
Two goals:
1.) Make as many friends as possible while hugging as many things as possible.
2.) Eventually settle down, have a family, and live a domestic life.
Three secrets:
1.) She is absolutely terrified of crabs for some reason.
2.) She can sing quite well, but only in Aklo.
3.) She has a humanoid form underneath all the tentacles and monstrous flesh, but doesn't realize it. She could reasonably pass as human if she dismissed her Transformed Body, but doesn't know she can do that.
Three character ties:
1.) Her only friend prior to being summoned is a creature named Urguth-Naal. He's still in the blackest void between the stars for now, but often sends her friendly messages in the form of lucid dreams.
2.) The first and so far only friend she's made here is a Half-Orc woman named Natasha. They met not long after S'quig-aly left the summoning altar, and the Orcish woman found S'quig-aly to be a very enthusiastic pal.
3.) Braxus is the cultist who originally summoned S'quig-aly, and he wants to either shunt her back into the void or kill her. He accidentally summoned her when he attempted to call for an aspect of Shub-Niggurath, and is less than pleased that he brought forth a happy-go-lucky hug monster instead. He's still a bit upset about the four ribs she broke when she hugged him.
Three Memories:
1.) S'quig-aly remembers the soul-crushing boredom of the void.
2.) She remembers the all consuming joy of making her first organic friend.
3.) She remembers the one time a harpy flew over her head and she felt an incredible urge to hug it.
RP sample
S'quig-aly slams the doors open, a smile plastered across what is probably her face. "HELLO FELLOW HUMANS! IT IS A LOVELY DAY OUTSIDE. THE SUN FEELS PLEASANT ON MY HUMAN SKIN!"
She saunters in, nearly tripping over her "dress" (which is as much a part of her body as her tentacles). "I HAVE HEARD THAT TROUBLE IS HAPPENING. I WOULD LIKE TO HELP MAKE THE TROUBLE GONE, IF THAT IS OKAY. I AM GOOD AT THAT, I THINK." She casually extends a tentacle and places it onto the shoulder of one of the gathered people. "FELLOW HUMAN," she says to the blatantly elven man. "DO YOU HAVE TROUBLE I CAN HELP YOU WITH?"
I've decided on a hideous monster from beyond (an Elan with the Aberrant Aegis archetype) that just wants to blend in with humanity and give everyone hugs. This should be fun to build!
That's too bad, but I'll get over it. I like the Alienist in theory, but it trades away a lot for not very much. I think an Aberrant Aegis (along with a bunch of Aberrant feats) could fit my concept very well, so I might end up going with that.
I'd almost forgotten about this because of my other games! I've got an idea for a handsome wordcasting sorcerer that made a bad deal with a devil. As he levels up, he'll gain levels in Dragon Disciple and Bloatmage, trading his good looks for more power. I'll stat him up once the site lets me download the player's guide.
This sounds really fun! I've never had the opportunity to try Serpent's Skull out. I'm thinking of an Unchained Synthesis-Bard, with an Eidolon focused on a mix of melee and skills.
How long have you been playing Pathfinder?
Roughly 3 years, give or take a few months.
What are your rules knowledge and optimization skills like?
I know most of the rules by heart, but I still have to look up a few of the more complex rules every now and then (mostly regarding what does and does not provoke attacks of opportunity.) As for optimization, I'd say I'm fairly average. I can make some very optimized characters, but I have a tendency to go with flavor over power. I've got an enduring fascination with multiclassing and prestige classes that often make my characters suboptimal but interesting.
Are you experienced with the PbP format?
I have some experience with PBP, mostly as a player with a brief and slightly discouraging stint as a GM. Unfortunately, most of the games I've been a part of have gone under, or else I've had to stop due to the dread beast "Real Life" interfering.
If you are, but your game/s ended early, what happened?
Often, the GMs simply vanish into the ether, never to be seen again until you find them happily GMing another game a few months later. Then again, players dropping out and generally losing interest have sunk more than a few games.
What kind of combat/social balance do you like?
I'm more of a roleplayer than a rollplayer, but too long without a good combat can really drag on me. I'd say I'm about 60/40, in favor of social stuff.
Do you have previous experience with the WotW AP?
Vaguely. I was selected to be in a campaign, but had to pull out shortly after because of Real Life punching me in the jaw. I've broken out of my cell, but haven't seen anything outside of the prison itself.
As for character concept, I'm considering a Kobold spellcaster (probably a sorcerer or summoner) of some sort whose tribe was wiped out by worshipers of Mitra. I don't have any experience with the Spheres of Power system, though. Would you allow Words of Power? It's official Paizo, but pretty much never used so I thought I'd ask.
Name: Renald Vasidius
Race: Tiefling
Class: Wizard/Druid (Wild Whisperer)
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Backstory: An odd, nature-loving wizard, Renald adopted the party as his "pack" some time ago. His lack of care for human life, mixed with his fascination for animals, led him to wholeheartedly approve of the badger sacrifice. He eventually joined the other party members in joining the Pathfinder society, out of a desire to roam far and study exotic animals along the way. The opportunity to assist his pack and watch things die were just added bonuses.
Personality: A strange and slightly feral man, Renald has dedicated his life to the dual goals of obtaining arcane power and studying every animal he comes across. His loyalty to his adopted pack helps balance out his sociopathic tendencies.
Description: A pale, gaunt tiefling with a hunched back, Renald usually wears a brown, ratty cloak and a tan skullcap.
