Rowan pursues the bad guys down the stairs.
Hearing the sounds of combat, Rowan repositions himself so that he has a clear shot against the enemies.
"By the gods, that's horrific. These little monsters all need to be put to the sword." Once the room is secure, Rowan begins looking over the bodies for anything of note.
Still here. I've just been kinda busy. Sorry for not posting combat actions faster.
Seeing that Isabella appears to be seriously injured, Rowan steps behind her and casts cure light wounds
Rowan fires an arrow at the closest goblin to him (number 6).
Seeing that his attacks are not effective, Rowan steps away from the goblins and casts Bless on his allies.
I am back. Sorry about that. It has been a busy week for me.
Rowan quickly takes a shot at the surprised goblin.
Rowan quietly steps into the room and draws his bow. He whispers, "We should try and sneak up on them." He attempts to stealthily move further in to the building. He readies an arrow to fire at the first goblin he sees in case the stealth attempt fails.
"More goblins? What are they still doing here? I agree with surrounding them. I'll go around to the back door, but I'll need one of you to help get it open."
Rowan waits for the sneakier members of the party to find a way into the building.
Once the situation is explained, Rowan says "It sounds to me like this meeting took place yesterday, and Ameiko left early this morning. I think that she might have wanted us to follow her. Otherwise, why leave the letter out in the open? I think we should head to the glassworks and start looking for her and her brother at once. I want to know why he thinks their father was involved in the attack. Could Lonjiku really be the culprit?"
Trunt and Camil:
"If that's true, it definitely sounds like someone was bribed to leave the gates unguarded. If those guards fled to Magnimar the day of the attack, it's too late for us to go question them. They could be on a ship out of the country by now. It does mean that the culprit or an agent of theirs was in town not too long ago. I think we should ask the townsfolk if they saw anybody new or suspicious looking in Sandpoint in the days before the attack. For now, we should go get Runt and start our patrols." Rowan sets off to patrol the town with the help of Runt and Trunt. He talks with the people in the market, explaining that the heroes from the attack on the festival have volunteered to join the town guard for a while. He will also ask people if they happened to notice anybody new passing through town in the days before the attack. During the shift, Rowan asks Runt "How are you liking the city life so far Runt? I know it's got to be pretty different from what you're used to."
I think that sounds like a good setup.
I guess if we have an odd number of people, threes works better than pairs. I think we should have at least one team active at all times, so there will be a night shift. We should each take a section of town instead of randomly running around.
"I think that explains how they got into the center of town so easily. Nobody was on guard here during the festival, so they just climbed over the wall and marched right in." When Shalelu leaves, he says "Good luck out there! And be careful. We don't know what this person is capable of." Once all of the other party members are around, Rowan says "Now that we're officially members of the town guard, I think we should patrol in pairs. That way we can cover a lot of ground, but still not be alone if there's trouble." Unless something else comes up, Rowan spends the rest of the day fulfilling his new duties as a guard by patrolling the town. He tries to get to know the people better, and does his best to reassure them that everything is now under control.
Rowan sits down for dinner with the rest of the group. He listens carefully to Shalelu's description of the goblin tribes. "Seems like the different tribes are all pretty distinct. I wonder how our culprit got them working together. Are they powerful enough to scare the chiefs into it, or did they offer some kind of reward? The goblin we interrogated didn't seem to know, so we might have to try and get the information out of a higher ranking goblin." When the conversation turns to goblin atttacks away from the cities, Rowan says "Aye, goblin raids are much more devastating out on the frontier. The village where I was born was destroyed in a goblin attack. I was only a baby at the time, so I don't remember it, but from what I've been told it was unimaginably horrible. One of the reasons I dedicated myself to Erastil was so I could protect people from that. It just never ends. The goblins always come back no matter how hard we hit em'."
Rowan proudly accepts his new badge. He was happy to see the townspeople appreciating the group's work. Maybe seeing us working together will inspire folks to step up and serve the community. Erastil would like that. I won't be able to stay here forever, but hopefully I can give the people what they need to keep the town safe when I leave. "All of us who aren't from Sandpoint are staying at the Rusty Dragon. Discussing things over dinner is a good idea. I'll be there for sure."
"I'm happy to volunteer. I certainly won't be going anywhere until this mystery is solved. Erastil would never forgive me if I turned away from a town in need of help."
"Earlier today, we questioned one of the goblins captured during the attack. He told us that the attack was organized by a third party who used the chaos as a distraction so they could sneak into the town's graveyard. Naffer told us that the body of Father Tobyn had been stolen during the raid. We have no further clues as to who this third party was or what they wanted with Tobyn's body. We also learned from the captive goblin that they are using Briar Hill as their hideout." Rowan pauses to let them process what he said. He then turns to Shalelu and asks "So Shalelu, what else is going on that we should be aware of?"
"Now that sure ain't good. Why would somebody organize a goblin attack just so they could dig up the body of an old priest?" Rowan thinks for a minute before saying "You know, I've heard of priests more powerful than me who can talk to the dead. Maybe Father Tobyn had some secret that our mysterious culprit wanted to learn. I know it's a stretch, but it's the only idea I've got at the moment." When the gravekeeper mentions the ranger, Rowan says "Hmm. I'm a decent tracker, but I'm certainly no expert. I think we should go see if this Shalelu can help us out. Might as well tell the sheriff and Zantus what we've learned while we're at it."
After explaining the situation to any of the other heroes at the inn, Rowan goes to search the graveyard for anything suspicious.
"We should get the others first, then check out the graveyard. If there is a clue to what is going on there, we're more likely to find it with more people investigating."
"Well that was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Let's head back to the inn and tell the others what we've learned." Rowan keeps a mental note of Trunt's suspicious behavior. He would need to pay more attention to the gnome in the future.
"The graveyard? Why would someone want to sneak into the graveyard? Ask him where their hideout is. Then we should go get the others and investigate the graveyard."
Rowan waits for Camil to finish the interrogation.
"Before we start this, do any of you speak goblin? It will likely be easier to get through to them if we are speaking their language. If he doesn't speak the common tongue, we could go get Runt. I'm pretty sure she knows goblin." Once the language issue has been sorted out, Rowan says "There's two ways to do this. I say we should ask nicely first, and if that doesn't work we move on to threats." When the others are ready, Rowan will channel energy to bring back the goblin.
"I will try and bring him back to consciousness. Should make getting him out easier." Rowan channels energy to heal the man. If the first channel doesn't wake him up, he continues channeling until it does.
"I think we should pay a visit to the goblins that are being held in the jail tomorrow. Maybe they can tell us what's really happening."
"Your husband will live, but unfortunately there's nothing I can do about his foot" Rowan says solemnly. He looks over at the hole in the floor. "Be careful down there. If you need to, come back so we can heal you."
Rowan pushes past anyone in the way in order to get to the injured man. He kneels down and casts cure light wounds on him, desperately hoping that the man is still alive.
"Rowan, do you have any idea how the goblins would have gotten into town anyway? It just seems so odd that they would have attacked in the center of town while the guard was drawn off." "I'm not sure. It's possible that they just slipped in while nobody was looking. Security was pretty light with the sheriff and his men being gone. It's also possible that they have some sort of secret passageway into town. I've only been in Sandpoint for a few days, so I don't have any idea what that might be." "Perhaps we should have been hunting down those goblins today... If they were to attack right now we wouldn't be there to assist the guard. I can't help but feel a little uneasy." "I'm not worried about an immediate attack. We killed enough of them at the festival that it should take some time for them to regroup. Still, there's no sense in waiting until it becomes a problem again to take care of it. We should start looking for their hideout first thing tomorrow." "My husband is battling a goblin in our son's closet! Please help." Rowan gets up from the table and follows the rest of the group to Mrs. Barrett's home. "We should try to capture this one alive. It might know something about how they have been getting into town or where their lair is."
Rowan wakes up early the morning of the hunt and heads over to the cathedral for his daily prayer to Erastil. He prays for a successful hunt. Returning to the stables, Rowan can't shake the feeling that they are just wasting time that should be spent working to stop the goblins. His worries fade once he gets out into the woods. Hunting has always been one of his favorite passtimes, and he is excited to try out a noble's method of hunting boar. Almost as if through divine intervention, Rowan lands his spear, and with a little help from the riders, the pig is slain. "Magnificent hunting everyone! Erastil has given us his blessing. Tonight, Sandpoint will feast on boar. Tomorrow, we begin a new hunt, not for beasts, but for the goblins who threaten our homes!"
Rowan gives a slight shrug as Zandril brags about his talent for archery. He did win the competition. I'm still not sure whether it was true skill or mere luck. "I will take a spear. I don't have much experience on horseback."
Rowan graciously thanks the townspeople for his gifts as he makes his way to lunch. He takes his seat in the dining hall. When Isabella asks to sit with him, he nods. "Of course you may. Good to see you as well." When it is his turn to speak, Rowan says "I'm from a little village not too far east of here. I was raised by the town's priest, so I decided to join the service of Erastil to follow him. Spent most of my time helping folks out with whatever problems they were having. I came to Sandpoint for the festival and to see that new church. I suppose I'll be staying until we can get to the bottom of this goblin situation." Rowan responds enthusiastically to Foxglove's hunting suggestion. "I'm always game for some hunting! I'm in."
"Say, that man over there is selling some 'sticky fire that burns real good' and I don't think he knows what it is. He has it labeled 'lamp oil'. We would be doing him a favor if we bought it from him. 'cept I have no money so one of you should buy it." "I still have some gold left. I'll take it. Might come in handy later" His shopping trip concluded, Rowan heads back to the Rusty Dragon.
"Reymenda is the Lady of the Martyred Womb, Empyreal Lady of Loss," says the aasimar woman. She gently touches the holy symbol on a thong about her neck - a black rose floating on water - with a small ring over it. "I... came late into her service after a goblin raid destroyed my home. I have lived in Sandpoint these last few years since then." "I see. My condolences. That sort of tragedy is all too common around here. With any luck, we will be able to wipe out these goblins and prevent it from happening again." ”mind if I join? I like a good game but the buy in was to rich for me at the festival.” After breaking the ice, Trunt clears his throat and says, ”You guys ever had run-ins with goblins before? I’ve been lucky and haven’t but I’ve heard a lot about them.” "I have. One of my main duties as a priest back home was dealing with the fallout from goblin attacks. Healing the injured, putting out fires, that sort of thing. Even killed a few of them with my bow, but they just don't stop coming." -----------------------------------------------------------------------
He finds a nice looking used backpack on sale, and decides to buy it. When Valtyra mentions dangerous fey, he also decides to buy some cold-iron arrows.
Rowan spends the evening celebrating with the others in the common room of the Rusty Dragon. He drinks a responsible amount, not wanting to take advantage of the generosity of the townsfolk. The response to the group's heroism was overwhelming. He had come to Sandpoint to help, but had not expected to be hailed as a hero within one day. Rowan plays a few rounds of cards with Camil and the others, picking up a trick or two along the way. His mood is jovial, laughing and telling stories of his home village. Eventually, he returns to his room and swiftly falls asleep, his exhaustion from the day's activities overpowering any lingering worries about the goblin attacks. Rowan sleeps in late. When he wakes, he begins his day as he always does, with an hour long prayer to Erastil. He prays for the wisdom to uncover the truth about the goblins and the strength to protect Sandpoint from any further harm. Once he is finished, he decides to take a walk to familiarize himself with the town and see what else had been damaged. If he runs into any of the other party members at the inn, he will inform them where he is going and that he will be back in time for lunch with Mr. Foxglove.
"Ah, a fellow servant of the divine." Rowan nods approvingly. He then stops to think, trying to remember if he has heard the name Reymenda before.
His religious education failing him, Rowan says "I don't think I've met a follower of Reymenda before. What is she a goddess of?" Responding to Valtyra, Rowan says "Of course. I think we could all use a rest after that. I think I'll head back to the Rusty Dragon for some drinks. You are all welcome to join me."
Rowan chuckles a bit at Wrath's dramatic response to being healed. "Don't thank me, thank Erastil. He does all the work. I just point him in the right direction." While the group is discussing the attack, Rowan adds "I suppose they could have a secret way in here, but I kind of doubt it. Goblins are sneaky little bastards. They probably just slipped in while everyone was distracted by the festivities." After the sheriff explains his story, Rowan says "I don't think the sheriff and his men being out of town for this was a coincidence. Seems like the goblins were trying to draw him away so they could attack Sandpoint without interference. That's more clever than I'm used to seeing from goblins. Are they getting smarter or is someone else leading them? Either way, someone needs to investigate. Valtyra and Wrath, I'll come with you to find their lair." When Isabella arrives, Rowan says to her "I saw you help during the fighting, but I don't believe we've met. I'm Rowan Ellis, priest of Erastil. Pleased to make your acquaintence."
"I hope that's the last of them. Good job everbody! Those of you who are injured, please come over here. I still have some healing magic left." Rowan positions himself so that none of the goblins are healed by his channel and waits for the injured party members to be in range.
Rowan turns to address Valtyra and Camil. "I don't think we need to track down their lair right now. They won't have the numbers to try something like this again for a while. We should make sure there aren't any more of them left in town though." Rowan walks off through the town, looking for more goblins, injured citizens, or fires.
"I can help him. Focus on killing the goblins" Rowan responds to Camil. He moves over to the injured dwarf and casts a healing spell.
Rowan moves closer to the front line and takes another shot, this time aiming for one of the goblin dogs.
He struggles to aim for the dog without hitting his allies, and the arrow goes slightly too far.
Rowan cries out "We're not done yet. There's more of them that way!" He runs towards the goblins and fires an arrow at the closest one
Despite the long distance of the shot, Rowan's arrow finds its mark, severely injuring the goblin.
Rowan finishes putting out the fire on the wagon. He looks around and breathes a sigh of relief as he realizes that the fight is over. "Good work everyone! That could have gone much worse." Seeing that Father Zantus has handled the healing, Rowan turns to Zandril. "It does seem a bit odd that they would attack a town this large, but goblins aren't known for being smart. They probably just wanted the chance to inflict as much damage as possible without regard for their own lives. That or they were dumb enough to think they could take all of us."
