When Manteca turns to talk to her she nods and gives the Shirren a grin.

My characters don't identify by what their class is, but rather what they do.

Tink is a ratfolk crafter in a mythic game. He would introduce himself as a collector, merchant, and purveyor of all things arcane. He is a Wizard x Summoner Mythic Archmage

Jimmy would introduce himself as a caravan guard come pathfinder whose main goal is to protect those who he cares about. He is a paladin.

Clarice wouldn't introduce herself as anything special. She does talk to her scythe though, and it responds. She is a reflavouring of a bladebound/kensai magus. (the scythe is only a scythe in look. Does normal damage for a rapier I think. So it is a rapier, that looks like a scythe)

Harrold would say he is an old man who used to hunt in the woods, and learn't his way around treating ailments with herbs. He is actually an alchemist.

Trytton would have introduced himself as someone who fights with the oceon. He is a water kinetecist.

Gran't' would say he was a guard and a craftsman, out for revenge against the orcs that ransacked his clan's mine. He is a geokinetic knight.

Jo, The Cabin Girl, would probably introduce herself as whatever you wanted her to be. Making it obvious her specialty is in manipulating people. She is a Kitsune Sorceress.

Sana would say she is a protector of those who were enslaved, and a fighter for their freedoms. She is a cleric.

Basically, none of my characters could easily be placed into a class by what they "do". In all honesty that is fine too. What the character is capable of, (in terms of mechanics and in terms of what the character would want to/is willing to do) is far more interesting and important than what the character sheet has down in the class line

Cleaving Vital Strikes OF DOOOOOOOOM

Required Feats:

Power Attack
Prerequisites: Str 13, base attack bonus +1.

Cleave
Prerequisites: Str 13, Power Attack, base attack bonus +1.

Great Cleave
Prerequisites: Str 13, Cleave, Power Attack, base attack bonus +4.

Vital Strike
Prerequisites: Base attack bonus +6.

Improved Vital Strike
Prerequisites: Vital Strike, base attack bonus +11.

Greater Vital Strike
Prerequisites: Improved Vital Strike, Vital Strike, base attack bonus +16.

Two-Handed Weapon Trick
Cleaving Smash
Additional Prerequisite(s): Cleave, Improved Vital Strike, Power Attack

Goblin Cleaver (Combat, Dwarf)
Prerequisites: Str 13, Cleave, Power Attack, dwarf.

Orc Hewer (Combat, Dwarf)
Prerequisites: Str 13, Cleave, Goblin Cleaver, Power Attack, dwarf.

Giant Killer (Combat, Dwarf) (this one is not strictly needed)
Prerequisites: Str 13, Cleave, Goblin Cleaver, Orc Hewer, Power Attack, Strike Back, base attack bonus +11, dwarf.

Cleave Through (Combat, Dwarf)
Prerequisites: Str 13, Cleave, Power Attack, base attack bonus +11, dwarf.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Be careful that you cannot take Power Attack at level 1.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Feat Progression:

1: Open Normal Feat
2: none
3: Power Attack, Cleave
4: none
5: Goblin Cleaver
6: Vital Strike
7: Great Cleave/Orc Hewer
8: none
9: Great Cleave/Orc Hewer (whichever not taken at 7), Open Bonus Feat
10: none
11: Open Normal Feat
12: Improved Vital Strike
13: Cleaving Smash
14: none
15: Cleave Through, Open Bonus Feat

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The fantastic thing about this is that you can cleave everyone your size or lower within your reach, and apply improved vital strike to all of the attacks, and can 5ft step after the first hit.
Your opponents no longer need to be adjacent to each other.
This synergises amazingly with vital strike, as you want to make yourself large, which lets you increase your reach, and damage dice, so you can potentially hit up to 24 people with improved vital strike.
You can fit greater weapon of the chosen into this build too. To be honest I am not sure how greater weapon of the chosen synergises with cleave.
You can probably also fit in the greatsword divine fighting style.
But here you have a warpriest who can deal really good damage to single opponents via greater vital strike, and can do INSANE damage to mobs of opponents by hitting all of them with vital strike, and at 17, improved vital strike.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You might be slightly behind a full attack in damage against single opponents, but you should do more damage against multiple opponents.

As to what I am liking from the blogs:

Sorcerer! I am loving the concept behind the sorcerer, and the idea that different bloodlines get different kinds of magic is something that I never knew that I needed.

Resonance. I love the base concept, and what they said they were trying to achieve (reduce book keeping). I will not talk about the current implementation though

Cool and flavorful small magic items. I absolutely love that these are being codified. I try to do this kind of thing for my players already so to see it in a book is nice.

There are plenty of other things I am liking, but these are what came to mind quickly.

Ratfolk Crafter 6 (HP 63)

If he wants to be difficult to hit he can look at going snake style and being an annoying little so and so.

If he is allowed to rebuild to a master of many styles monk, he could go for crane and snake and just not get hit ever. He would need to get dex to damage to rake up the damage, or specialize in a combat maneuver which can be used in place of an attack like trip.

The biggest issue is that we are facing high ability enemies but have not had the chance to actually get any wealth to put into any of the "big 6". I think we are all quite far behind the expected wealth of 16000gp.
I think all that Tink has is the button of level 1 spell storing which the closest I can see would maybe be 2k gold.

This doesn't matter too much for damage items or the like, but when facing "Save or die" abilities like 3d6 rounds of paralysis, our highest save having a 55% chance of failure causes issues.

From Sleep:
"A sleep spell causes a magical slumber to come upon 4 HD of creatures"

Color Spray can effect unlimmited HD of creatures. and has an effect on HD 5 and up, whereas sleep just auto fails against HD 5 creatures.

a 10ft radius is 12 squares, a 15ft cone is 6 squares.
You trade half the effected are to effect up to any 6 creatures, whereas sleep can effect a maximum of 4 1 HD creatures.

Something else I am really really enjoying so far is the input we are seeing from the designers so far.
It is fantastic to be reading a thread on one of the blogs and see a designer responding to someone's question. It isn't a rules thing or anything like that but it really really makes it seem like the designers are listening, and care about our questions and feedback, so kudos to them!

5 people marked this as a favorite.

So, something I have seen happen time and time again is that people tend to focus on the things we don't like. This is normal, and human.
The unfortunate side effect is that it can be rather emotionally draining as a creator to only see lists of things that people don't like about the creation you have spent days pouring your energy and soul into.

The purpose of this thread then is to give the designers a place to come when their betteries are drained, and get some positive feedback.
Beyond just that, it helps to know what people are enjoying, and liking, and why they are liking it, so you can give them more of it.

Lets keep this to a positive thread, and tell the designers what we are liking, and if you can explain why you like it that would be great too I am sure.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. I really like the fact that so far the system just seems streamlined.
All the actions are the same action. There is no more remembering what my 7 different actions are and "Did I do my immediate action last turn? How does that effect my swift this turn again?"
2. The way feats seem to be working now.
I know some people don't like the fact everything is called a feat now, but lets not get into that. If you don't like it, find something to tell us that you do like instead :)
I really like that the terms have been grouped and the talk of nice easily searchable lists of the feats is really interesting. I love that feats seem to be focused on options now rather than just bonuses to things you could already do.
3. Ancestry as a whole intrigues me. I love the fact that it introduces a whole lot more variance into the races of Galorion. I also am loving the floating stat bonus we are seeing.
I do believe there is a step by step character creation process in the frontish section of the core book.
I do also know that the core book is an unwieldy tome (both in sheer weight and in actually finding any information you want.)
I will suggest that if you would like, I can give you my number for whatsapp, my skype details, my email, or my discord info. Then you can rapid fire ask questions and I can try and explain why some things are the way they are.
We all love the game here and all would love to help turn your frustration into a love for the game as well.
Very nice response
I think we are very much on the same page. And I suppose the difference is semantics. I would call very few of my examples below the break RP. Finding a video isn't RP, but it is effort put into your character and the game.
I don't think anyone ever has issues with rewarding putting in the effort, so long as you reward all effort equally.
I feel most people start talking about this subject saying "Should I give rewards for good RP?" and people start getting iffy with the fact that you cant reward the charismatic but not others.
Nobody has said giving rewards are bad. It's just that the way we talk about it "implies" a bias towards giving rewards for a certain set of behaviour, which is actually quite contrary to a lot of the personalities we see in TTRPGs.
To these people it can come across as almost an attack, which is why we tend to get so defensive and combative about it. It is a tender issue.
I know I was picked on at school quite mercilesly for my social ineptitude, and so having someone say "Hey, if you can be a good RPer you get a bonus" can sound a lot like "Hey, if you are socially inept you are never going to be able to get this bonus and will be worse than the people at the table that are not". I know logically it isn't true but I have to temper my emotions to not feel like I am being excluded from the bonus club for not meeting it's criteria.
That is why I stipulated that I do not give bonuses for good RP, because while I do that it is a subset of the bonuses I give. I feel this question/topic is better represented by asking "Should I give bonuses for people that are putting effort into enjoying the game and the game of those around them, in whatever way they are capable?"
I believe the answer to that is a firm yes from "everyone".
Another example, If I have a player who is tactically inept trying to play a general, I will give him bonuses when he has a good idea, or even potentially when he out of character asks for advice, or if he quotes sun tzu, or a lot of other things. I might even give a bonus to another player who helps our general player enjoy himself by making suggestions OOC on tactics so long as it is done well and the general player enjoys himself more as a result.
~~~~~~~~~~~
There is some psychology involved here. When someone says "We reward x behavior with bonus to checks" people have a tendency to read that as "We reward x, but not a b or c, with bonus to checks".
While the exclusion is never stated, people have a tendency to insert it. In this case this becomes "We reward good RP, but not good research, or effort, or any number of other things". While the person asking the question never meant for that exclusion to be present, it is treated as if it is there, which is what a lot of the arguing here revolves around.

~~~~~~~~~~~
TL;DR
There is enough stigmatization of the hobby, and of a large group of people that participate, that we should be careful how we phrase things to avoid getting peoples backs up. We should also be clear about what we are trying to achieve.
I firmly believe nobody is against rewards for effort.
MrTsFloatinghead
I have always viewed combat as much more of a group effort.
I find it happens much more regularly in combat that my group of players will say to each other "Hey, if you move there, I can move there, and then we get a flanking bonus." The nature of the round by round combat basically ensures that everyone gets a turn to effect the outcome.
I can honestly say that I have never had anyone in any of my games, ever say, during someone elses RP "Hey, remember this guy is having an affair, weave that in to your speach." It just isn't something that really happens.
So the main difference for me is that the codified benefits in combat, are often applied by sharing the spotlight, and saying to someone "Hey, if you move here you get a bonus to stab the guy." is much less likely to make someone uncomfortable than trying to get them to create a narrative or descriptive improv.
Opposite to combat bonuses, RP bonuses to me come across as a very singular thing, with very little way to make it into a group thing, and almost promote attempting to hog the spotlight, at least to me.
____________________________________
I have no problem with bonuses, but I give bonuses for much more than just good RP. If you take the time to read up how to actually swing a sword and can show me that in combat, maybe I give you a +1, or if you are too shy for that but you spend some time researching and find some really cool fighting montages, and when your monk flies into battle you pull out a clip and go "I punch the guy like this" you would get the same bonus. So long as you put effort in each time.
I will do that for everything. If you make a rousing speech you get a bonus, or if you just sit down and think properly about how your character would act, and even if it is written down and handed to me on a piece of paper, you would get a bonus.
If you are an artist playing an artsy character and you actually do an impressive sketch to represent your character doing it, bonus. If you are not an artist and you try to draw something to represent your character doing a drawing, even if it is crap, so long as effort was put in, you get a bonus.
Trying to collapse a building with knowledge engineering? Describe how you search the building for weakspots etc, and be good rp, bonus. Or, spend some time researching ancient demolition and excavation techniques and explain (in a technical manner, this is supposed to be the not good RP guy bonus) how those techniques could be used here, bonus.
Now on the opposite side of this, I have no issue with asking my players to explain why their characters are doing something.
If my cha 5 dwarf barb decides to make a rousing speech when all he has done up to that point is grunt, I am going to ask my player if that makes sense, and might not give them a bonus if they can't explain how it fits their character
I like the idea of a dragon that is enamored, intrigued, respectful and possibly even awestruck with the shorter lived races.
They find it incredible what the shorter lived races (say under like 150 years) can accomplish in their time on the planet. They cite the building of incredible cathedrals, works of art, entire cities that rise and spread in the space of two or three generations.
Bemoaning the fact that most dragons contribute surprisingly little with their apparent power and their longevity.
They are a bit of an outcast with other dragons for touting the ideology that dragons could do with being more like people.
They believe that people have one major shortfall though. The tendency of the masses to become complacent, and to expect those more powerful than them to fix their problems.
Our dragon tried for many years while still little more than a wyrmling to interact with smaller settlements, but they would either panic, or start to worship him. In both cases the society would stagnate due to his presence.
He eventually learnt that he could not be a part of the society of the shorter lived races as a dragon, and began to interact while disguised as members of many different races. He became a patron of the arts, spent time travelling as a "tinker" or cart salesman. Towns he passed through suffering from goblin raids would soon find themselves free of the tyranny.
Our dragon basically strives to allow societies and settlements to progress as a peacetime culture, as they believe that is when the shorter lived races are at their best.,
