Seems like the 5 of us are it?

Thank you!

I was going to give this a week if any more interested posters showed up.

A week from when you opened the recruitment, or a week from when you posted this? I’m just trying to figure out how long I have to hem and haw about which idea I want to pitch. I still like my initial fighter idea, but I’ve never played a shifter before and I kind of want to try one out now. I have two possible ideas for a shifter which, interestingly, both use variant multi-classing: either a totemist from a barbarian tribe in the wilds near the Chondalwood (with the tiger aspect and VMC barbarian), or a former street-kid from Arrabar whose connection to nature gave them the power to survive (with the owl totem and VMC rogue).

Thanks to my adhd/executive disfunction, I may need an actual deadline in order to pick one and write them up.

Ok, thanks

I don’t want to push my luck at all, but as I weigh (the PF version of) a kensai against other possible unarmored ideas I find myself wondering if you’d allow races from Kara-Tur, like tengu or hengyokai/kitsune, or maybe an oni-blooded tiefling (assuming they or their family had migrated to this region, obviously)?

I didn’t see any mention of background skills either way. Are you/we using those?

This means that it might be socially acceptable to wear a modicum of clothing. Armor would also be piecemeal.

Hmmmm... I still like my fighter idea, but I can't remember the last time I played an unarmored character (except a wizard in big wizard robes). Now I kind of want to look at something like a monk or a shifter... or maybe like a kensai...

This sounds pretty cool. I’m thinking about applying with a human fighter whose family served the united kingdom as knights (and who would see reuniting the kingdom as a way of living up to that familial obligation). Does that sound like it would fit with the game you’re envisioning?

Work was busy today; I won’t have the time (or energy) to finish a submission. Good luck to all those who did!

What time is the cutoff tomorrow? I think I might just throw caution to the wind and submit my oracle, if I have enough time to write it up before the deadline.

It’s kind of amazing that, even with the restricted class options, there’s only one pair on that whole list who share a class. I’m debating submitting either a fighter or witch (both of which would extend that trend, lol).

edit: in the interest of full disclosure, my biggest hang up with both those ideas is that I have an oracle idea I like even better, but I’m not sure I want to try to sell a character with a ‘maybe’ class (especially because that may not be the only ‘maybe’ thing about the character)…

I'm just dropping a dot, for now. I definitely do not have the bandwidth to take on running a game right now (sadly), but I dig the old school vibes here and might submit a potential PC.

Out of curiosity, are you allowing the racial heritage and/or planar heritage feats? There's a handful of racial feats that could be fun/handy, and it could add an interesting element to a character... like, being blessed or cursed with a tinge of outsider blood, or being a magus with a bit of elven blood (as an homage to the basic rules where the elf 'class' was basically a fighter/magic-user).

The phrase “by up to 15 RP” would generally be taken by native speakers to mean ‘by an amount not exceeding 15 RP’ (or ‘by 0-15 RP’). Also if you scroll up from the linked comment to the question I asked a few posts above it, that may help clarify it (I specifically asked if we were raising to 15 RP or by 15 RP and he said “by” up to 15).

I was going to start typing stuff into a profile, but I ran into a problem... I can't find any online images I like for my character. I'm going to keep trying, but I'm wondering if any of my fellow applicants who are better at finding (or maybe even generating) images might be willing to help me out?

I was planning on a male character, but I'm willing to go female instead if it helps find an image (which is why I haven't started filling out a profile yet). I basically just need an image of someone dressed in priestly (or wizardish) robes with blue butterfly wings (ideally large enough to actually carry them in flight). Any ideas?

For the application list, I don't have name/profile to give yet (until I figure out gender) but they'll be a musetouched aasimar, sorcerer [starsoul] 20/oracle [branded; heavens] 20, archmage/hierophant T1

My day got disrupted by the weather and I haven’t had a chance to type up anything, but I am still working on my character. Did we ever get an official word on whether we’re supposed to be bringing our races up to 15rp or adding 15rp to them? That answer directly effects some of my choices.

I’ve resumed work on my Desnan. I’ll post as much as I get typed up tomorrow. The build was focused on just being fun to play and offering some healing, some buffing, and some damage, but I did trade out some spells… I doubt it would hold a candle to Mia’s 1,000+ dpr, but now it includes options that could let me sharply spike my combat effectiveness with a little preparation if needed.

Is that what we’re supposed to be doing? I’ve been purposefully building to avoid anything like that…

So, I have a character mostly built… a prophet of Desna (starsoul sorcerer/heavens oracle) who’s within a point or two of most all of the benchmarks, but now I’m starting to think about whether or not I’d really have time to play that character. It’d be so many spells (and spell slots) to keep track of, and that’s not even getting into the extra spells from archmage/hierophant.

One of my other ideas is a mystic with a connection to the swashbuckler- a monk/pei-zin practitioner oracle (blackened curse/life mystery) with the phoenix bloodline (from feats). That seems like a more reasonable amount of magic to deal with, so I might work on that instead? I have some work done on a conscript/stalker too, but (despite having no spells) that feels like it would involve a lot of bookkeeping (and looking up how different abilities work) too.

I’ve been so busy with the holidays (and so easily distracted by the abundance of cool/interesting options) that I haven’t made nearly as much progress as I’d hoped on actually building something. I am still working on it though.

I’m an idiot. I made some progress on the intrigue oracle/conscript today and then realized that as interesting as she is, she’s really probably not the right kind of character for the type of module this seems like. I think instead I’m going to work on a conscript (or slayer) | arcanist probably taking arcane archer levels for goodies like the phase arrow.

eriktd wrote:
Ooo, what spheres is your conscript focusing on? I love conscripts.

I’m still trying to decide. The character I have in mind is the daughter of a pirate lord who was secretly an inquisitor of Kelinahat (the Empyreal Lord of spies and espionage). Part of me wants to play up that heritage with the Pirate martial tradition and a focus on like the fencing and maybe duelist spheres. But, part of me really wants to lean into the intrigue/clandestine thing and focus on hand to hand spheres so that I always appear/am unarmed. Either way, I’ll probably pick up the scout sphere and some athletics too.

I haven’t posted any build stuff at all yet, but I’m leaning towards a conscript | oracle (with the intrigue mystery). Work is busy but I’m going to try to sketch out a build tomorrow or Friday and start checking it against the benchmarks.

In a gestalt game (especially one of this level) I think it’s a big mistake to build anything that doesn’t have both magical and mundane options. If everything you do requires magic then a simple AMF will completely screw you, and if your only options are mundane then there’s all kinds of situations where you may struggle.

Lol! The field can’t affect itself or else the spell would be useless (since it would just cancel itself immediately), but now I’m laughing about the idea of an anti-magic field item that’s just constantly cycling on and off as it activates, cancels itself, and then reactivates itself as soon as the field was gone. Almost like magical blink- every time any kind of magical effect would affect anything you have a 50/50 chance of it being active or suppressed.

I’m not actually going to do it, but ever since the GM mentioned anti-magic fields I’ve been thinking (and laughing) about how funny it would be to make something like a fighter/mystic and spend the resources to make an item that would just create a constant anti-magic field around him. Lol.

I know I was pretty outspoken about just accepting the build rules (and I will, whatever they turn out to be), but it feels worth reiterating what eriktd said- eliminating legendary gifts won’t stop people from getting inherent bonuses, it will just force them to use wishes to get them. If you (GM) are still worried about stats getting too high after all the other changes, you might be better off leaving ABP as is and just giving on benchmark to stay at/under for attributes too?

I apologize if my tone seemed patronizing, that wasn’t my intention. Having GMed on the boards in the past and being forced to stop because it’s so much work (and can be terribly stressful), I feel protective (perhaps overly so) of the few GMs who are stepping up (especially for a game at this level which is way more work than a low level one).

Awesome! I have to think (at this power level) being a couple points over some of the benchmarks wouldn’t be big deal, and that wasn’t too painful, was it?

I don’t really get what seems to be the prevailing line of thought here… I suspect that this will be an unpopular post, but it seems like a lot of people are kind of saying “I’m not capable of building the type of character the GM wants with these rules, so everybody else should have to follow these others rules that will allow me to succeed.”

GMing is a tough job, that’s why there’s a shortage of GMs on the boards… maybe instead of stressing out one who’s actually trying to run something by asking them to make all these changes to suit us (or some of us) we could try to accommodate the GM by making characters within their rules that wouldn’t necessitate revamping the entire module (which they probably chose to use in the first place because they didn’t have time to design all the encounters for a super high level/power game)?

What if instead of asking the GM to change all the build rules we all took this as a fun challenge in character building? I don’t think it’s unreasonable to target those numbers, we just have to purposefully build well rounded characters instead of specialists. And, yeah, maybe stick mostly to paizo classes instead of 3pp ones that aren’t necessarily as well balanced (or, at least, pair one 3pp class with a more reasonable second class that strengthens weaknesses instead multiplying strengths).

@trawets- lol, nice. One of my ideas was to make the high priest of Irori: monk/pally/Champion of Irori on one side and oracle/evangelist on the other (but I’ll avoid that since you’re already going that direction)

I also enjoy the paladin of Ylimancha! I got to play a overwhelming soul kineticist/paladin of the Harborwing in a short lived gestalt TT game and had a ton of fun with it. I think this is the only other time I've ever seen anyone use that Empyreal Lord.

My head is swimming with options. Are prestige classes allowed? One of my ideas is for a dragony guy who would probably want levels in dragon disciple. (If they are allowed) Any restrictions on which ones or how to qualify (like, will you outlaw ones that sort of combine classes--like eldritch knight or arcane trickster--or require that you give up caster levels for the other class you need to qualify)?

These character creation rules are absolutely bananas, and I love it. Lol. I’ll start thinking about builds and see what we end up with.

@Robert Henry- thank you for including “maybe a full caster” as a concept, lol

I still have a long way to go on developing the character but I think I’m (probably) going to put together a beastbrood tiefling sorcerer with the rakshasa bloodline (likely focusing mostly on illusions and/or enchantments?)

Hmmm… I’m having second thoughts about my initial concept. I started building it as a brazen deceiver bard and then realized I didn’t really want to play another bard. So then I started working on an inquisitor version, which seemed great until I realized it was way too similar to the character I played through Skulls and Shackles. Now I’m sort of back to the drawing board, although I do think maybe a full-caster would be a nice change of pace from Azira.

I love making high level characters. I’ll definitely be watching out for the actual recruitment. I usually only use paizo stuff but I had put together a Valkyrie-inspired character a while ago for a 3pp game that I think combined a spheres of might class and a path of war one… depending on the actual character creation rules I might try that again (though there’s also a good chance I’d just do something purely paizo).

I was leaning towards an arcane caster, and possibly a true neutral alignment. That would leave me with no detectable aura at all, and I was thinking that if/when he was questioned about that he would lie about having been trained to hide it so that he could infiltrate dissident groups. Alternatively, I was looking at the beastbrood tiefling (descended from rakshasa) but I could potential go with a spitespawn (descended from divs); I don't like the flavor of the latter as much, but their SLA is misdirection which I could use to fake an evil aura (for an hour/level, which isn't great but could be helpful). What do you think of those ideas/options?

Popping in to say hi and drop a dot. I don't have a real clear character concept yet but I like the idea of a tiefling magic-user who's super good at bluffing and pretends to be a priest of Asmodeus with the false focus feat. If possible, maybe an actual priest of Asmodeus by profession/title who's just pretending to be a true believer, but possibly just someone trying to pass themself off as a like a traveling priest or whatever if the first version doesn't work. I'm thinking maybe a bard (for all the social skills) or possibly a sorcerer (if I can find a bloodline I really like)?

PS- Hello to the familiar faces I see here! And, another +1 to the endorsements of Sensen's GMing quality.

Hey everyone,
I'm really sorry for disappearing for a few weeks there. Work has not improved (in fact, due to people leaving over the recent changes I now have more responsibilities then when this all started), and now I'm looking for a new job on top of that. I definitely should have at least made time to give you all a heads up before now though, so (again) I apologize for that. I've gotten more or less accustomed enough to the situation that I'm starting to try to ease back into the games where I'm just a player but, unfortunately, I'm going to need some more time before I'll have the bandwidth to start DMing again. As soon as I do, I'll PM you (or text those of you who are RL friends) and see who's interested in continuing.
GH

Thanks. I gave it some thought but (with the small amount of time left) I couldn't come up with anyone I wanted to play as much as Maia. Hopefully she's different enough from Zhandar to merit consideration.

BigRig! Nope, I’m just an idiot and forgot you were using a GM alias. Yikes, sorry about that.

male

Hey all, sorry for intruding. I just wanted to pop in and say that I'm applying in the current recruitment. I was one of the original players back when Park joined the group and I had to bow out due to RL issues. Those issues have pretty well cleared up and I'm looking to get into maybe one more game. I know you've been through a GM change since then, and I'm certain not expecting to just be welcomed back to the group at all or anything like that, but I also didn't want it to look like I was trying to sneak back in without acknowledging my past connection.

My original character (Andrei Markescu) was a ranger/warpriest, but he was very melee focused and you said you had that covered so rather than trying to bring him back I'm applying with someone new.

If you have any questions or concerns for me or whatever please feel free to PM, or just post them here (the previous GM, who still controls the thread I think, never marked me inactive so I still get all the updates for this thread and gameplay).

I have ideas for ranged damage dealers and a Str based tank. I’ll see if maybe I have time to put one of them together tonight or tomorrow.

male

Yeah, man, that’s hard. I’m sorry. Take all the time you need.

That’s fair. I’ll put together an actual submission this afternoon/evening (unless I hear from the other GM before then) and if you like it enough to offer a spot I’ll apologetically withdraw my submission from that game.

I’m still waiting to hear on the other game, but if I haven’t been picked for it (and there’s only one spot there too, so there’s a decent chance I haven’t) I have an idea for an Ulfen skald who would be a solid party buffer, be able to handle some secondary healing, and have enough UMD to potentially back up the full casters with scrolls or wands.

Do you know when you're going to close this? I love pirate games but I haven't chimed in because I was working on a submission for a different game (and know I don't really have the bandwidth to take on 2 new games right now). I should, hopefully, find out tomorrow if I got picked for that one and, if not, I'd be interested in submitting something for this. Maybe a party buffer, like an exemplar brawler or one of those skalds that can help swashbucklers (wyrm singer, I believe), or a ranged damage dealer, maybe a kineticist, if those are allowed?

Andrei’s background is up and he’s ready to go. Good luck all.

I have an idea for a fighter who served in the Korvosan Guard, a tanky sword and board type, but I have a question about how you handle the shield brace feat. RAW the polearm or spear is still a 2-handed weapon (and uses 1.5 Str and the better power attack bonus), but PFS has a rule that it counts as a 1 handed weapon (which negates those benefits but makes it a valid target for feats/abilities that only work with 1-handed weapons); which version do you use?
