Welcome to the Discussion!

My Game Policies (Pretty normal):

1. This discussion thread is open for all OOC matters, so no ooc tag needed. For OOC matters in the gameplay thread, please use the [ ooc ] tag.

2. Please post (at least) once a weekday, and (at least) once on weekends. If you would be away, please let me know in advance where possible, and we can work something out. Otherwise, if you go missing, where necessary, I will bot your characters for the sake of the rest of everyone else. Thus, it is a good idea is to leave botting instructions for normal combat (with dice rolls), space combat and non-combat in your profile page beforehand.

3. If you have any disagreements over some of my GM calls or interpretation of the scenario, please take it to the discussion thread or, even better, PM me.

4. If you have played and/or GMed this scenario before, please do not metagame or spoil the plot. And please let me know.

5. It is the responsibility of the player to keep track of the game, including referencing the map on google slides and moving your token.

Normal Combat
6. Once initiative is determined I resolve actions in posting order, NOT initiative order. I used to do the latter but it doesn’t work that well in PbP, so am going with the former instead. If you'd like your action to go after someone else's, please mention it in your post.

Space Combat
7. Alright, let's talk about the elephant in the room. Space Combat.

In PbP, it can be slow and boring. So, this is how I propose we run it. If you have any suggestions or comments, please speak up. I'm very open to suggestions.

I'll ask for the scan roll as the group enters the ship. Then, I’ll roll the initiative at the start for all ships based on the respective piloting checks.

Once it reaches your ship’s turn, everyone will post* but I will resolve the actions in the Engineering – Helm – Gunnery phase order. As such, while you can declare your actions in the open, please have your dice rolls in spoilers.

*There is one exception to this. The Gunnery phase might need to wait for all the ship movement to finalize to determine which weapons are available for firing. So Gunners might want to hold your posting until then or set up a series of contingency actions depending on the final facing and positioning.

Rolls and Skill Checks
8. I will do your initiative rolls, as well as perception rolls for surprise rounds, traps, or appropriate checks.

9. On knowledge checks for general information I usually use spoilers, but sometimes when the information is super sensitive I'll fill you in based on your roll. I'll let you know each time it comes up. I often forget to remind folks to Identify creatures in combat; if your character is good at that be sure to roll it and I'll give you the info.

10. On skill checks where there could be team effort involved, please be explicit when making the rolls whether you are attempting the check on your own, or whether you are aiding. There might be situations where only one character is allowed to attempt the check (and the rest to aid) – I’ll state so explicitly if that’s the case.

11. On skill checks in general, if I feel you have roleplayed well, e.g. gave a good description of what your character does to search for a trail, came up with creative ways to befriend a hostile NPC, gave a very rousing speech, I often give bonuses.

Roleplaying Matters
12. The maps and handouts link (at the top of the page, and my statblock) will display all the maps, handouts, pictures, etc as the scenario progresses. (Incidentally, Android and IOS has the Google Slides app in case you work off mobile devices.)

13. Please have your full character information up on your character's profile page. Also, please have your stat block updated with the key information.

Feel free to chat here about character concepts and what not. We have four players at the moment, and I am working on two more. We'll start the game in mid-August; I'm targeting August 16th. We can flex this based on people's availability.

We will be playing this in Campaign Mode for SFS credit. This means several awesome things. First, you can keep playing your official SFS character in other scenarios while we play this, as the credit for playing doesn't get assigned until the end. Second, we'll level up during the book instead of at the end. Third, it gives me a lot more leeway in case you guys get "creative". My plan is to run through all 6 books of the AP, at about 6 months per book!

Use this thread for out-of-character discussions and off-topic conversations. This way we can keep the Gameplay tab in character, and reading like a story.

Also, please give me the following information:

Player Name:
Character Name:
PFS # :
Faction :
Day Job Roll :
Standard Advancement or Slow?:
Have you played a PFS or SFS Special before? Was it via PbP?
Do you have any planned absences between January and March?
Are you in a non-American time zone? (Nothing wrong with that, but it helps make sure I am accomodating of your posting times!)

Finally, what is special/unique about your character? This includes both crunch and fluff.

When you have time, please skim my profile to see my expectations and what you can expect from me. They are all fairly standard, but good to review.

This scenario is a Special, so it is inherently insane, chaotic, fast paced, and amazing. I've GM'd four specials previously, so I understand how they work and will try to keep it running smoothly for us!

Some more information about me: I tend to post major updates once a day, with 1-2 little updates as we go. I usually post in the early morning and afternoon, Pacific Time. Because this is a Special, I will be strict on the 24-hour combat round and will Bot when necessary. Please have botting instructions in your profile. (With dice rolls, for bonus points!) There will be times, like skill challenges, small choices, and social encounters, where I will post early due to someone's success. The reason for this is never because I intended to skip you, but because there is a lot of content in this scenario and I want us to enjoy as much of it as possible!

We won’t start for another month or so, but this is a good time for us all to dot into the Gameplay tab and make sure everyone is here! I plan to put up the introductory post on January 11th and let us getting going full-speed on January 14th.

I will be GMing a game of Incident at Absalom Station, the first book in the first Adventure Path in Campaign mode. We will play with characters at Level 1, who will level up partway through. At the end of the book, you will receive a chronicle sheet which can be applied to a SFS character, and this game will be reported like any SFS game. These characters must follow ALL SFS rules, except I will review and allow most alternative races. At the moment, the commitment is only to Book 1. However, I am not firmly against doing more books of the AP.

This recruitment will be open from now until Friday at 5:00 PM, Pacific Time. At that point characters will be chosen. We will start in earnest next week, when everyone's characters are ready. To apply, please post the following information.

Player Handle:
GM Handle, if applicable:
Character Class:
Preferred race:

Have you played or GM'd this AP book before? :
Have you played or GM'd book 2 or 3 of this AP before?:
Have you played in a scenario featuring starships before? :

NOTE: Three spots are already reserved. The recruitment is for three more players.

Please be prepared to post a minimum of once per day. I tend to post my large posts during the evenings, Pacific time, but will check in during the day. I expect quality posts, with more than just dice rolls or OOC text. During combat, I will bot any player who has not posted within 24 hours. Outside of combat, all choices will follow the "rule of 2", and players will only be botted if there is an important skill roll which they are necessary for.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Synopsis:

When a brutal gang war breaks out on a docking bay in Absalom Station, the player characters are recruited by the Starfinder Society to investigate the unexpected bloodshed. Delving into the station’s seedy Spike neighborhoods, the heroes confront the gangs and discover that both were paid to start the riot and that the true conflict is between two rival mining companies battling over a new arrival in orbit around the station: a mysteriously deserted ship and the strange asteroid it recovered from the Drift. To head off further violence, the heroes are asked to investigate the ship and discover what happened to its crew, as well as the nature of the asteroid it tows. But what the players find there will set in motion events that could threaten the entirety of the Pact Worlds and change the face of the galaxy forever...

This scenario has the Repeatable and Starship tags.

Feel free to chat here about character concepts and what not. We have three players at the moment, and I will start recruiting more soon. We'll start the game sometime in the next two or three weeks.

I expect this game to last 3-4 months, so don't plan to apply the credit before October. (Though this scenario can run short. We'll see how it goes!) We will be playing this in Campaign Mode for SFS credit. This means several awesome things. First, you can keep playing your official SFS character in other scenarios while we play this, as the credit for playing doesn't get assigned until the end. Second, we'll level up from Level 1 to Level 2 in the middle of the book which will make a TPK during the final boss fight far less likely! (Yay!) Third, it gives me a little more leeway in case you guys get "creative".

I'm not currently planning on running the whole AP, just book 1. But, if we have fun and people wish, extending the campaign may be a possibility.

New Paizocon GM here. Where do chronicle sheets come from?

I seem to remember reading somewhere that we do not need to print them out, that they will be provided by the HQ desk. Is this true? Or do we print them ourselves?

I want to be double-super sure, so that I am prepared!

Does anyone know if the Paizocon GM badge is eligible for the $10 banquet discount?

I didn't want to click 'buy' until I knew if there was a certain discount code to enter or something. Right now it is showing up in my cart as $35.

When you have time, please skim my profile to see my expectations and what you can expect from me. They are all fairly standard, but good to review.

Finally, what is special/unique about your character? This includes both crunch and fluff.

I haven't received the scenario yet, so the plan is still to begin on the 5th. I will add a link to the maps when I get that.

Welcome to our table for the special! We will get underway on the 5th, Australia time. (This may be the 4th for many of you.) Please see my profile for general table expectations, all are similar to the majority of GM's on these forums. Mostly, I want to stress how important it is that everyone post a minimum of once or twice per day. This game is timed, and there is a lot to go through!

I will be GMing a SFS game for Into The Unknown, the evergreen quest pack. It is a series of five Starfinder Quests designed for 1st-level characters. (Not just pregens).

The six positions are currently reserved for the following players/characters:
Arratoi
Markar
Peet?
Cora Jex
Darkling
Shaudius

We will start before November 30th, depending on the speed of the first table. Please ninja dot in the Gameplay tab so you can get notifications.

Please be prepared to post a minimum of once per day. I tend to post my large posts during the evenings, Pacific time but will check in during the day.

Synopsis:
When a mysterious visitor comes to Absalom Station selling items belonging to a lost Starfinder, the Starfinder Society takes note. The PCs are dispatched to discover out how the recent arrival found these items, leading them on a series of quests beyond the Pact Worlds and into the stars.

"Into the Unknown" includes five adventures that take the PCs from exploring Absalom Station, to partaking in starship combat, to exploring an alien world. The fifth adventure in the series provides a stunning conclusion that takes the PC's previous accomplishments into account for a climactic final showdown against an enemy starship.

I will be running the Evergreen scenario, The Confirmation [5-08], for the second session of Gameday VI. This scenario is for Level 1-2 characters.

The first six to post here will be accepted to play. This game will start promptly on October 6th.

Synopsis:
A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for level 1-2.

Almost all Pathfinders undergo extensive training for three or more years to learn the tricks of the trade, and their last test before graduating from the ranks of the initiates to the status of a full Pathfinder agent is the Confirmation, a special research project that involves considerable fieldwork and is designed to simulate the initiates' future work as a Pathfinder. Even the noteworthy field commissioned agents sometimes participate in such trials as a way to familiarize themselves with the Pathfinder Society’s rules and expectations. Although Confirmation is typically an individual affair, the society recently discovered a site on the Isle of Kortos that would be perfect for initiates but perhaps too dangerous to handle alone. Successfully uncovering this site’s secrets will not only contribute to the society’s body of knowledge but shape the exciting careers ahead for each of the prospective agents.

In the FAQ, when discussing mounted charges, it says

FAQ wrote:
"Both charge in unison"

This sounds like there are two charges happening: The rider's and the mount's. Therefore, the rider can take her lance and charge within ten feet and attack. This ends her charge. The mount's charge (in unison) moves five feet further and bites. This ends her charge. If the rider has Ride-By-Attack, then they both can move away.

Is this an accurate reading of this FAQ?

Full FAQ:

Mounted Combat: When making a charge while mounted, which creature charges? The rider or the mount?
Both charge in unison, suffer the same penalty to AC, the gaining the same bonus to the attack rolls and following all other rules for the charge. The mounted combat rules are a little unclear on this. Replace the third paragraph under the "Combat while Mounted" section on page 202 with the following text. Note that a "mounted charge" is synonymous with a "charge while mounted," and that when a lance is "when used from the back of a charging mount" it is during a mounted charge not when only the mount charges.
A mounted charge is a charge made by you and your mount. During a mounted charge, you deal double damage with your first melee attack made with a lance or with any weapon if you have Spirited Charge (or a similar effect), or you deal triple damage with a lance and Spirited Charge.

For the poster who asked about the Wanderers... the module had the full race writeup and a sample adventurer as one of the pregenerated characters. My favorite new race since Fantasy Flight Games created their opposite numbers, the Risen Demons.

Just wanted to publically mention what I annoyed the group I went with to Free RPG Day all day saying to them: the 3PP Free RPG Day offerings were pretty spectacular. I'd put Temple of Orcus as one of the nicest products I'd gotten ever, actually, and LPJs NeoExodus adventure was equally awesome. I'd gladly have paid for either of them, and think they might have actually been better to run and have fun than the OFFICIAL Pathfinder module! The Gaming Paper product was pretty neat as well, although I'd have loved a smaller-scale copy of the map as well. I'd also mention that I'm fairly certain these did their job as marketing tools as well. I may be dying inside slowly from the sheer agony of waiting for Shadowsfall now after reading the preview materials in Temple of Orcus (Wanderers!), and, while I actually have the stuff from the NeoExodus stuff, I can see how it would whet the appetites for it from that module... and the one or two that I didn't have are high on my acquisition list now! You guys should be proud of yourselves! And the rest of you lot? If you missed one of these products, you should go find one ASAP!

I'm a must-buy kind of guy if this scheming ever gets off the ground, since I love virtually everyone that's mentioned wanting in's stuff.

That said, if you guys can come up with a framework for cooperation in a business sense for this project, perhaps you might want to think about doing something like, say, Fantasy Flight Games's old Mastercraft Anthology for Free RPG Day sometime. For those that didn't see that product, it was a chapter or so of each of their hardcover books, complete with rules, monsters, base classes, prestige classes, races, feats, spells, etc. all collected as a teaser to draw customers to a larger product. Letting each 3PP submit a small amount of their content along with information about the rest of the product or line, as well as where to purchase it as an advertising tool would be a great way to get the knowledge of what's out there to the public that doesn't loiter on the Paizo site or ever check out much of the 3PP content. Just a thought... as a fan of so many of you guys, I'd really like to see more GMs utilizing what you bring to the game.

Are we finally going to get that direct deposit feature so I can just have my paycheck sent DIRECTLY to you guys and eliminate the middleman? :) Really excited about this one, and I'm sure it'll be filled with crunchy goodness!

WHY was I not informed that this existed?!? :) Certainly going on my buy list.

For the record, I'd be really, really interested in seeing those Elemental Spells from Atlas Games' Occult Lore redone for Pathfinder. I got that book as part of a lot on Ebay, and used the heck out of it.

As for the topic itself? I use the heck out of 3PP stuff. A Fistful of Denarii's classes are regularly picked at my table, and everyone in my group has a copy of it because I BOUGHT it for them. :) I can't imagine making an arcane caster without using the 4WFG Arcane magic book. Obsidian Twilight converted my favorite Monte Cook feats into PF, and added some interesting concepts as well. (Our Feral Halfling Druid used the racial traits from this book), not to mention the Undefeated book from that line, which every character at my table has at least one feat from. The Super Genius Games Adventure Guide has some magnificent base classes that make the archetypes they represent way better than core does, and Rite Publishing's 101 series is used constantly by my guys. (I almost wept when I got to the ad mentioning the 1001 Spells collection isn't out until Fall in the back of the In The Company of Monsters compilation. Then I reread the Wyrd rebuild for Pathfinder and just couldn't be depressed with that to look forward to!) I couldn't imagine running Kingmaker without Jon Brazer's stuff... it's that integrated. Tricky Owlbear Games's Forgotten Foes is a bestiary that no fan of the classic game should do without. Headless Hydra's Eldritch Secrets and new Campaign book are spectacular explorations of the outer edges of magic. (Disclaimer: I contributed to Eldritch Secrets. If you find something you think is broken and stupid in there, it's probably me, and shouldn't reflect badly on the rest of the fine product.) And Frog God Games might as well be Paizo for how integrated it is into the Adventure Paths... and the astoundingly high quality of the stuff. Kobold Quarterly is one of the few magazines I subscribe to, and Open Design never fails to knock it out of the park. And for every product I named, there's 5 others I know I've overlooked or forgotten where came from. I guess what my rant comes down to is this: you're missing out on some of the best stuff Pathfinder has to offer if you need the Golem logo on a product to use it. Give it a shot, and don't let bad experiences with fly by night publishers in the free for all days poison you to some excellent ones with these fine folks.

A Fistful of Denarii from Tripod Machine is SPECTACULAR and affordable to boot. I've lost the ability to play without it. Otherwise, I'm a big booster of 4 Winds Fantasy Games, Open Design, Frog God Games, Rite Publishing, Super Genius Games, Tricky Owlbear, and Headless Hydra Games as well. Anything by any of these companies is a good purchase.
