New Ways to Play on VTTs

Tuesday, April 27, 2021

We’re now well past the 1-year mark for social distancing, working from home, and other ways to deal with the ongoing pandemic, and that means we’ve all had a long time to start Pathfinder and Starfinder games on virtual tabletops (VTTs), like Astral, d20Pro, Fantasy Grounds, Foundry Virtual Tabletop, and Roll20. As we approach our second virtual PaizoCon next month, I wanted to give an update on some of the progress we’ve made in making distanced play easier for both players and GMs.

Navasi, the iconic envoy, is engrossed in an array of computer screens, each displaying a different view of an alien world.

We’ve long had partnerships with Astral, d20Pro, Fantasy Grounds, and Roll20, and each continues to support both our games to varying degrees. Starting today, we also offer premium content for Foundry Virtual Tabletop as well. The community has done an incredible job of supporting Pathfinder and Starfinder using the OGL and Community Use Policy, but we thought it made sense to offer more official content for those who want it.

A Foundry Module Sample with flip mats, icons, and pop up module art

You can purchase the first five Pathfinder Bounties for $5 each right now, and we’re looking into how we can add more great Foundry-compatible modules in the future! These are something of a test for us, as they’re converted internally (rather than by someone at Foundry Virtual Tabletop) and are hosted here on the Paizo store. Let us know how the process works and what other premium content you’d like to see and we’ll build out a plan to expand our offerings.

We’re continuing to look into our options for getting more accessories like item cards, pawn/token sets, and other products you’ve all come to expect from both Pathfinder and Starfinder onto our various VTT partners’ stores, so let us know what you want to see and we’ll try to make it happen.

Regardless of how much longer we’re all living under the restrictions of the pandemic, VTTs are here to stay, and we want to make it as easy as possible for you to enjoy our many Pathfinder and Starfinder products on them for years to come.

HECK YES!!!!

It is amazing to see Paizo seriously considering wider support for FoundryVTT!

My group has been a Pathfinder-only group ever since 2010. And the only reason we have jumped to 5E in these socially-distant times is the availability of ready-to-use adventure content for Foundry, in the form of DDB imports.

I sincerely hope that Paizo will indeed make their full APs available for Foundry, in comprehensively prepared form (artwork, journal entries, maps with pins, lighting, preplaced tokens), maybe even packaged music and sound effects provided by Syrinscape.

Even when things will return to normal, we will continue to use Foundry for our in-person-games, driving a touch-screen lying on the table. And having officially-provided quality-controlled content that does not require the fixes that DDB-imported content sometimes does, would be of significant value for me, now that I have less and less time to (prep a) game.

Note: I am aware that the APs are already available for Fantasy Grounds. But personally, I found that UI/UX to be less than accessible, and still feel that they have missed their chance to modernize when moving to Unity.

I'm so excited! I love Foundry! Please consider converting 1e content too! I want to play the adventure paths on Foundry! I want tokens for monsters on Foundry too!

Awesome! Absolutely love foundry. Token packs would be a huge draw for me. AP volumes would be amazing, but I'm not sure where the price break would have to be to sway me away from PDFtoFoundry. Having all the tokens placed and whatnot WOULD be worth at least a few bucks more on top of the PDF price. But it's hard to say if my budget and what makes it worth paizo's time would line up.

Token packs would probably be instant buys though, depending on image quality.

Excellent! My top two wishes for this: purchasable Bestiaries complete with token art (art is the only thing missing from the PF2E module atm) and full AP modules, similar to how they work on roll20. Would be very cool.

Take my money!!!! All of it, seriously. I'm buying Bounty 3 and running it for my group in 10 minutes because Foundry is that awesome and easy to use!! Please please please please give us Bestiary token packs as soon as you can, it's really all that's missing from this fantastic platform!

What others have said: basically, I am SOOOOOOOO happy to see official Paizo support for Foundry. Bounties seem like the perfect way to "test the water" here, and the community effort to build and perfect the PF2 system in Foundry is absolutely stellar. (I would go so far as to say, it's the best of any system on Foundry at the moment, both in terms of visuals and function).

I picked up a Bounty to test it out. Well done, all around! The import was smooth, I love how it divides up everything into unique folders (since I have other PFS material in this world), and to answer a previous question, everything is here - no need to buy the PDF. All the text, images, handouts, maps...it's all contained. One could easily buy this, import, and be up and running in a matter of minutes.

Keep it coming, Paizo! Even if the next step is official one-shots like Sundered Waves or Maelstrom, that would be great. Understandably, APs would be a boon, but I'm loving everything so far.

I'll just put this out there: if you make Foundry-ready map packs, I'll give you all of my money!

Mark, are there any plans to make 1E content available for use with Foundry? Running an AP or even a module requires a lot of work to get the artwork extracted and into Foundry; especially the maps, which have to be re-scaled and reworked to get a consistent grid size so that they'll work well. I would gladly have paid for that having been done for me and would in the future as well.

I like the full size art as well and never tokenize. You really lose that sense that halflings, goblins and kobolds are half the size of humans when they are the same zoomed in face. With the scaling feature you can even fine tune this so you can have the 4' dwarf and the 6'5 elf.

Also there is an isometric module which the full size transparent art background is absolutely perfect for using.

The journal entries tagged in each map room is how the PDF Foundry importer map layer has been done, but the journal notes icon needs selected to see them

Aren't those modules supposed to be included in the April Showers Sale?

Foundry settings on each token allows you to adjust the size of the token, so that it is less than 1 unit wide. I scale my small size creatures between .4 to .6 in size (some smalls are smaller than others) and walk it further down for Tiny and Diminutive creatures.

Providing a sense of scale to tokens is one of the things Foundry VTT does almost effortlessly.

BACKGROUND: My group and I moved from r20 to Foundry early in the pandemic and have been super happy with the switch. We primarily play 2e, and as others have said, the community module is amazing and very active, with new content added under the OGL usually within 24-48 hours of release. I've also been using the excellent PDF to Foundry module by Fryguy, which uses a watermarked Paizo PDF to import maps, journal entries, etc. that the author has manually parsed himself. We use The Forge service for game hosting rather than running on a home server, primarily due to bandwidth issues.

FIRST IMPRESSION: Very excited to see this announcement, but approached with some skepticism/trepidation. Not sure if this was going to be useful given the excellent community support.

LIKE: I bought Bounty 5 and was able to activate it even though we use The Forge for hosting. The quality of the art and the implementation is excellent. Having the token art, the monster stats, the tokens on the map, starting place on the maps, etc. is awesome. The format of the journal entries is also awesome - I've been a direct supporter of PDF to Foundry, but vastly prefer's Paizo journal structure. It's basically turn key and ready to run.

NO LIKE:
1. I wish the PDF was included. I understand it's a separate product, but I'm used to running it off my iPad while using Foundry and reading the PDF to mentally prep. They're also pretty to look at.
2. The activation process was kind of weird/cumbersome.

FUTURE REQUESTS:
1. Token packs for bestiaries, as many others have requested.
2. APs, PFS scenarios, etc.
3. Finding ways to maximize value/minimize "re-buy" for players/GMs, while still making it worthwhile for Paizo (and Foundry). I love Paizo and am a rulebook and Lost Omen's subscriber, which means I own physical and digital copies of all the Bestiaries. I've also purchase the PF2e pawn box, both the physical form and the PDF. It's going to sting if/when I have to purchase token packs for all the Bestiaries that I already own. Again, I understand that extra effort goes into making the tokens, and not everyone needs them. On the other hand, VTTs and digital play aren't going away. Foundry also seems to have a different business model than most other VTTs - purchase once and then roll-your-own game module - with this in mind Foundry works great with system agnostic digital content (PNG/JPG files). Could there be different product tiers (1. physical only, 2. physical + PDF, 3. physical + PDF + Digital assets) to suit everyone's needs? If I can get the book for $50, the PDF for $15, I don't want to really pay full price again just for tokens.

Thank you to Paizo, Foundry and the excellent gaming community!

Dang!

But understandable. Since I use Foundry to run Age of Ages at the moment I follow this product line very closely. Don't know if I ever will run a bounty but I guess to buy one can't hurt.

Thanks for the answer.

Also, according to our Store Manager, these are Foundry products and therefore not eligible nor will be in future sales.

I'm running Age of Ashes right now on Foundry. I love the system and will put in another vote for token packs. I'm buying the bounties to show support for this product line though.

More Starfinder on anything. Even Herolab is running over a year behind. It's definitely feeling like the red-headed stepchild...

Anything you can share on plans for Starfinder content on Foundry. I bought the 3 Against the Aeon Throne books for roll20 but was planning to switch to Foundry since the pre-prepped content is done.

Would be interested in SFS or APs and more support for Starfinder content in general on Foundry.

Great to see support for Foundry (and VTTs in general)! It’d be great to see more flip-maps and flip-tiles.

If even things don't come out that y'all can justify making premium content for starfinder, I'd really love to see a map pack or two for the starfields. For some reason the foundry hex grids don't align with the ones on the starfield maps and group has been disappointed to not be able to use y'all's starfield maps since switching over to Foundry last year.

This is awesome news! And even if you just port the tokens, art, and maps for the 1e APs I will buy literally every single one without hesitation. Same deal for already released 2e APs.

First off.. I'm a bit disappointed to not see the grand-daddy of ALL VTT software mentioned, MapTool. It's still superior to all of the rest.. so long as you enjoy getting in elbow deep to set up the features precisely the way you want.

Second off, I couldn't be happier that you're supporting Foundry. I REFUSE to support the development of platforms like Roll20 and FG that only develop features and scams to make them more cash. Foundry has THE greatest community support out there, and if ANY new VTT system ever overtakes MapTool.. it will be Foundry. The only shocking thing is that Paizo didn't help give them a leg up from the start.

Third.. I PERSONALLY convinced Devin Night to start making Pathfinder token packs, in the hopes of FINALLY getting some Paizo styled top-down goblin tokens made by a respected content developer. I was horrified when you guys turned around and told him that he had to give them away for free. https://immortalnights.com/product/pathfinder-compatible-tokens/

Needless to say, we never did see those Paizo goblin tokens.

You NEED to hit him up, and ask him to start building some official token packs for you for Foundry and etc.

As mentioned previously (by me) you also NEED to go back and get your map artists to re-release all of your maps with gridless VTT versions.. starting with your Inner Sea and Sandpoint ones, specifically.

None of this is new. You should have started that ball rolling at least a year ago, when it became apparent that the Pandemic wasn't going anywhere any time soon. Still, better late than never, I suppose. In the immortal words of a famous bard 'git-er-done'. :)

Folks, please keep in mind that the community reading and participating on the paizo.com forums includes our staff who have been working on partnerships with several different vtt platforms, as well as people from those platforms. It is not appropriate to assume malice, incompetence or be derogatory towards folks working on or with these platforms if you disagree with their design, do not understand a choice that has been made, find an error/bug, etc. Thanks!

As a Foundry VTT user, what I really want are token packs. Bestiary token packs, with a variety of colours/options for each monster. AP Token packs. Module token packs. NPC / GMG Token Packs for when I go off-script.

The PDF2Foundry module already does a great job of allowing import of module PDFs into Foundry, so re-buying all the PDFs in a VTT (especially for AP Subscribers) doesn't seem like a good value proposition.

I would love to figure out how to do this. I can't find documentation on how to do it. I know that this isn't a Foundry VTT support site but if you can point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful.

I've installed the PDFoundry and PF2E Foundry Support modules. I can important the Hellknight Hill adventure but it is just a pdf within Foundry VTT. Am I supposed to be able to do more than that? I was hoping that it could be used to add items, monsters, maps, journal entries, etc.

Hi Cerebrolator,

My best advice is to go to the foundryvtt discord and look for the #pf2e channel.

But to give a brief overview:
PDF to Foundry will take an official watermarked PDF and it will extract maps, art, and journal entries. Then build walls, add in lighting, etc for those maps.

To use PDFtoFoundry make sure it installed and then you have to "manage modules" and enable it as a module. Once enabled you shouldd see a "PDF Importer" option under the settings tab within that world. At that point it is as easy as directing it to your official watermarked PDF.

If you have any extra questions definitely check out the foundryvtt server. They are very active and have lots of helpful community members.

Very nice.

I’ve also recently moved over to FoundryVTT having played both roll20 and FGU.

I would gladly pay Paizo for premium content on FoundryVTT and bought all these little one shots just to vote with my wallet.

I’d like to see the bestiary content/token libraries…

The PDF import is a Bandaid solution but the artwork quality/ resolution is lacking.
