Free RPG Day Sanctioning

This year’s delightful Free RPG adventures, Pathfinder Adventure: Big Trouble in Little Absalom and Starfinder Adventure: Skitter Home are sanctioned for use in Paizo Organized Play programs as of their release date of Saturday, July 25th, 2020. Sanctioning guidelines and chronicle sheets will be uploaded to the product pages before then.

Pathfinder players may use one of the five provided pregenerated kobold characters, applying credit to one of their characters as per the standard Society rules. Once the Advanced Player’s Guide releases (July 30th), players may create kobold characters for Society play, including using them in Free RPG day adventure.

The Starfinder adventure utilizes either Skittermander Society characters of fourth level or one of the four provided pregenerated skittermanders. If using a pregen, credit application follows Starfinder Society guidelines. Remember that Starfinder Near Space provides character options for use in building new skittermander PCs!

There are a few restrictions for when and how Free RPG Day adventures. These are different than in prior years, to take into account social distancing due to Covid-19:

  • GMs are permitted to run on a VTT for their local group, provided they get a physical copy from the store and are only running for local players.
  • Once the scenario is released digitally on paizo.com in August, anybody may run it online or in-person for whomever wants to play!
  • As always, you can get credit for the scenario twice: once as a player and once as a GM.

Achievement Points Update

This morning, the last piece of the AcP puzzle fell into place and we turned on boon purchasing. You will now see a full list of purchasable Character Options on the Boon tab of your My Organized Play page. While our intention is to rotate boon options out, with the delay in launching AcP we intend to keep this first batch of boons until the end of the year. We may add to the options, but we won’t take anything away without plenty of warning towards the end of the year.

To help you navigate through the new features, we’ve put together a description of the information found on several tabs of your My Organized Play page, followed by a list of anticipated FAQ. If you have a question that isn’t answered below, please post it in the comments and we will get it answered, as well as including it on future iterations of the FAQ.

Sessions Tab

Your Sessions Tab holds a display of every game you’ve played, and that GMs reported by Paizo.com. We’ve listed a breakdown of the columns below:

  • Date: when the session took place
  • GM: the GM’s name
  • Scenario: the scenario, module or AP volume you played
  • Points: the base value of the adventure, including GM credit and AcP. (This AcP value is not necessarily what you earned!)
  • Event: the event this session took place at
  • Session: the session number assigned to the table.
  • Player: Your Organized Play ID #
  • Character: the character that received credit for this session
  • Faction: the faction that character earned reputation with
  • AcP Earned: The amount of AcP you earned, after applying any multipliers from a Premier or Premier Plus event to the base value earned
  • Prest/Rep: Reputation or Prestige earned from this session
  • Notes: Any other notes added by the system

Boons Tab

This is your Boons tab, where you will spend your Achievement Points. At the top, you will see how much AcP you have to spend. To purchase, select the character you are purchasing for with the dropdown at the top of the screen, then click “Purchase” on the right side of the screen.

After you purchase a boon, it will be available for download beneath the available boons. It is a downloadable PDF, which you can keep for your records and/or print out, per campaign guidelines for providing supporting documentation.

Characters may have only one ancestry boon. Ancestry boons may be added to a character who has chronicles assigned but not applied. Other boons may be added at any time as long as language in the boon does not specify otherwise. Guide 2.0 will include language about applying AcP boons.

Boons must be purchased in between scenarios, to not slow down gameplay.

Achievement Points Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change my ancestry and background with one of the rebuild boons?
It depends on the rebuild boon. Rewrite History permits you to change Ancestry and Background. This boon phases out of use August 31, 2020. Career Change and Evolving Destiny do not.

Can party members help purchase the Second Chance boon?
Party members may contribute gold to any costs incurred as part of the resurrection ritual. They may also sell the deceased characters’ items to help contribute to the cost if the player consents.

What does unlocking access to items mean?
When you have access to an uncommon or rare item, you can purchase it at its listed price. You can also purchase the formula for these items you have access to from the Pathfinder Society at the same price as a common formula of the same level. Only the PC with the relevant boon attached gains access to this item.

Formulas for items which limit how many a character may obtain are not available.

What does unlocking access to spells mean?
Having access to an uncommon or rarer spell means that your character(s) can learn the spell in the same way they learn other spells, provided they meet all prerequisites. A character must have access to the spell to learn it from another character that knows it. Only the PC with the relevant boon attached gains access to this spell.

What spells are available with the Esoteric Spellcaster - Core Rulebook boon?
The spells available are: circle of protection, discern lies, drop dead, ethereal jaunt, false vision, globe of invulnerability, hallucinatory terrain, locate, magic aura, mind blank, mind reading, nondetection, power word blind, power word kill, power word stun, protection, spell turning, stone tell, or undetectable alignment

What items are available with the Avid Collector - Core Rulebook boon?
The items available are: aeon stone (clear spindle), aeon stone (dull gray), aeon stone (gold nodule), aeon stone (lavender and green ellipsoid), aeon stone (lavender ellipsoid), aeon stone (orange prism), aeon stone (pink rhomboid), aeon stone (tourmaline sphere), bloodletting kukri, brooch of shielding, cape of the mountebank, channel protection amulet, chime of opening, clandestine cloak, dancing rune, dragonslayer’s shield, elven chain, floating shield, forge warden, greater disrupting rune, holy prayer beads, invisibility potion, katana, katar, keen rune, kukri, mending lattice, oil of animation, oil of keen edges, panacea, potion of tongues, ring of counterspells, spell-storing rune, spiked chain, or swift block cabochon

What do I do if I have errors in my reporting?
First, check with the GM or event coordinator to see if they can correct it. If not, reach out to your local Venture-Captain or email issues to pfsreportingerrors@paizo.com. Please include photos or scans of the chronicle relating to the game with the error to make correcting info easier and faster.

We hope you are as excited in utilizing the AcP system as we are. We thank everyone for your patience as we worked through the bugs and got the system set up.

If you missed it earlier, you can still check out the July Starfinder Society preview blog.

Next week - Gen Con Online! Until then —Explore, Report, Cooperate!

I understand your frustration. I have multiple tables that should have RSP credit but don't. The only thing I can do is just wait.

If a game that you have a chronicle for does not appear on your sessions list, there is a good possibility that the player number was incorrectly entered. This is why I suggested contacting the GM/VO. I was not specific enough to suggest asking to confirm the PFS number and Player number are correctly reported. Human error (think "fat finger") or not reading what was written down correctly are mistakes I have done as a reporter. This can include sloppy writing.

How many are we talking about here?

2/5 *

Actually looks like 4 , 2 from a con and 2 from an RSP event so 21 points worth of AcP.

Ok so 4 tables not reported on your sessions but you have had confirmation that the tables have been reported. This points to an incorrect entry being made with the PFS number since you didn't indicate that the credit was showing on the wrong character.

At this point, it will take either talking to the reporter to get the number corrected or sending a message to the pfsreporting email listed above with all the information you can provide (Date, event number, GM PFS number, your PFS number and character number).

Then it will be a wait. At one time VCs could correct mistakes on the system but that functionality has been removed for now.

Grand Lodge 4/5 5/55/5 ***

You have to realize that RSP and increased AcP are not automatic in the system. It has to be manually imputed. Only Paizo has the access to do that so you can imagine that it may not always be done immediately. More likely it is triggered by the organizer submitting the after action report (AAR). So, you have to be patient. I would not obsess about the values the moment the table is reported. Give it as least a few weeks to a month. After that, it’s either Paizo failed to code the event or something happened specifically with your table. RVC are suppose to have access to make corrections for an individual player, but that should only happen after they confirm the overall event was properly coded.

The events seem to be recorded properly as RSP and Cons. I'll talk to my local guys one more time then send off an email to the reporting email after that.

Question - I noticed in the sessions tab that some sessions have achievement points granted while others are blank. Not just one or two scenarios and not all before a certain date.

I believe I read it somewhere but can not find the source. Are the new Versatile heritages restricted to just humans, like half-orc or half-elves, or can they be combined with other ancestries?

AcP
Conventions are tagged in the Paizo system when support is sent out. Any convention over 15 blocks can get support, but not all event organizers ask for it. If the convention isn't listed in the first of the month update blogs, it is not on our radar and won't get Premier status. We encourage all event organizers to reach out to the OP team and get their event submitted.

RSP locations had specific parameters regarding their event coding that needed to be met. They set up their event and provided the codes to the RVC, who collated their region and forwarded it to the OP team. If that didn't happen, the event won't get RSP. We do have a few emails that got hidden (I created a folder and put them in it without telling Alex) but as soon as we get through the Gen Con press, we will get those resolved.

There are some games not showing AcP. There isn't a discernible pattern yet, but as people report the errors we are looking at the larger picture to see what we can do to correct the issues for the larger community instead of on a person-by-person basis.

Free RPG Day
we realized there was an issue in the sanctioning and decided to do a review of the entire package. Doing this the week before Gen Con was fraught, but we didn't want to issue something with erroneous info or that would just need an immediate correction issued. Because of Gen Con, the review is on pause briefly. We will have sanctioning available before the Aug 25th street date and any games ran on Free RPG Day will count as valid for applying credit. We appreciate your patience.

Scan/photo your paper sheets and send them to pfsreportingerrors@paizo.com. we will use those sheets to either find the report in the system and why it isn't showing or report tables with the information. If you're missing it, so are 3-5 other people.

There has been a bug in the past that unset the scenario titles from events. No scenario means it won't show up on the user display. The one I remember was Year 5ish when Blakrose Matrimony glitched. I went from 101 tables of credit to 95 and lost a star. Upsetting!

Sometimes we just need to go in and fix something like that to make credit appear. It is SO something we want to fix, but we don't know there are issues until we get the reports. We prefer email, as it is something that doesn't get lost in strings of posts and we can reply to the sender when we get the issue resolved (or what steps we are trying to resolve the issue).

Is there a list of events that are Premier and Premier Plus?

For example, in some cases I received 1 AcP for a scenario; this is wrong (regardless of event level or whether I GMed or played), but I don't know how wrong. Should I just report "this is wrong but I don't know what's right" or "this is wrong and should be ___"?

Ok will do, but I will let it go until after gencon so it isnt swamping you guys, thanks Tonya.

How does the Rewrite History boon interact with the gold cost reduction from crafting?

If I had 150 gold worth of crafting reduction, would I include that 150 gold in my wealth and then reduce it to 127.5 gold or ignore it?

On the other side of the equation, would I lose the opportunity to have benefited from earned income for the scenarios that I played up to the point, potentially losing an extra 10-20% of my gear wealth?

It doesn't unless there's text on the boon explaining how it does.

Hello I purchased the Avid collector-core rune book boon. I expected a Wizard Ring to be on that curated list. I was sadly mistaken. Will other uncommon items that were missed in this curated list appear in future lists?

As a heads up the items available are listed on the blog that announced AcP being turned on.

FYI, not sure if this is a bug or not.

I attempted purchasing a hobgoblin ancestry for a character just now. I don't have any Playtest points, so I didn't change that dropdown menu. I selected my character in the dropdown menu for AcP and clicked Purchase, but the page just refreshed with no change.

I tried again, this time selecting my character in both the Playtest and AcP dropdown menus. Now when I clicked Purchase, it worked.

Grand Lodge 4/5 **** Venture-Captain, California—Sacramento

I kind of want to know what happens if someone buys a hobgoblin boon, and then manages to rack up the (insane) number of points necessary (12,100,000.00) to convince the system that they are allowed to buy a second hobgoblin boon...

(Yeah, assuming playing 12 hours a day, that would still take over 1 million days. But darn it...)

There is a known display "error". When you first go into that page it shows the AcP first, than Playtest. But what is actually happening in the backend is Playtest is first and AcP is second.

Reload the page and it will be displayed correctly.

It's probably like after working on a spreadsheet for 18 hours straight, your mind is Swiss cheese, and you just want this last formula to work, so you make it false if greater than 1,000,000,000.

Yep. I inadvertently purchased an ancestry boon for a human character instead of a playtest boon. Really annoying.

I believe Tonya said elsewhere that they will be released within a month after FreeRPGDay.

It was initially going to be the Tuesday after the games released, but something happened.

Any character, and yes!

(andreww: we've seen your question on wands/scrolls and are discussing/looking into it)

If a rewrite history was applied to a character but that character hasn’t been played, can the rewrite include new materials such as from the ancestry guide, or are the changes fixed at a certain date?

Thanks.

If the character hasn't been played at 2nd level, you can redo anything.

Sorry, hasn’t been played since purchasing the rewrite in August. Currently 3rd level when last played prior to rewrite.

Liberty's Edge 3/5 5/5 **** Venture-Captain, Nebraska—Omaha

I am not even sure those boons are still valid. I have one for each of my first five characters and looking at the boon, it only says Pathfinder Character Rebuild.

If it is the boon from this blog than it was a limited time boon that took effect when it was applied. It ended back in 2019.

There are two AcP boons now to rebuild characters, Career Change (valid for 5th level or higher) and Evolving Destiny (valid for 4th level and lower). It looks like this is the boon you will need to use.

Per the Society FAQ, Career Change and Evolving Destiny do not change ancestry or background. Picking new option in an ancestry is allow, just not changing the ancestry.

Sczarni 5/5 5/55/5 ***

The Boon existed until mid-2020.

Yah, it’s the boon that ended Aug 31. It’s the full rewrite history. I would surmise, given this discussion and the boon description that all changes to the character can’t be from materials produced after August 31.

Final thoughts?

It was supposed to be applied when purchased, not assigned and held, so it has no effect after the deadline (apparently August 31st).

Blake's Tiger wrote:

I hear what you are saying, but take for a minute the scenario below.

Scenario in which this boon was purchased for a character on, let’s say the 30th of Aug., but the next game available for said player was September 1st then this boon would be useless?

The boon does not indicate that the character needs to be played, but does indicate that “All changes to the character must be applied by the time the character next plays an adventure; once the adventure begins, no further changes can be made with this boon.”

I see no rational reason to enforce a player that the have to play said character before the deadline as that seems like an unrealistic restriction on things the player might not have control of, as well as there being no real difference on the character as long as changes did not incorporate materials beyond Aug 31, “supposed” reasons aside.

Anywho, appreciate the discussion and arguments.

Sczarni 5/5 5/55/5 ***

Well, if memory serves correct, the rebuild was supposed to be cut off earlier in the year (maybe even 2019, as Gary mentioned), and the August 31st deadline was an extension for just that sort of reason.

Scarab Sages 4/5

No, you don't need to have played the character by the deadline. But I don't think you can choose options that were published after August 31st. They extended it to allow including options from the APG, not to include them from publications indefinitely.

Yes. The changes have to be made from the options available before the boon was purchased. And the boon specifically said it could not be used after Aug 31.

You don't have to play the character before the deadline, but you did have to make all the changes by the deadline.

And honestly, there was so much advance notice, and the boon was free to start with, that there really isn't a compelling argument that anyone got cheated.

That's actually not on the Boon anywhere.

It's pretty lacking in any details, itself.

Scarab Sages 4/5

I'm pretty sure somewhere in the forum threads there was discussion around this. As long as the boon was purchased by Aug 31st and the changes are made before you play, I think you're fine. However it was also discussed that it didn't apply to newer books. I have no idea which thread all that was in.

That boon was back when they could only print on the boon what was on the summary on the boons page.

The rules for using it were all on the forums.

Scarab Sages 4/5

For example, I remember when the deadline was earlier than August 31st, Tonya stated you could wait to rebuild until after the APG came out if you wanted to keep your character out of games until then. But I'm pretty sure that book was set as the limit. Then later the deadline changed to be after that book came out.
