Fiction Finder: Novels

Give us new ones!

Beyond the Pool of Stars is one of my favorite books, period. It's a pulpy, crackerjack adventure with compelling heroes and a rollicking story that rockets right out of the starting gate. I don't often reread books, but I've read this one three times!

(Also, I agree—I, too, would love more Pathfinder Tales!)

I was -just- about to curl up with a Pathfinder book. With the sale, I binged on them. My massive box came in today. I came to the Paizo site to see if I should read them in any particular order!

Only books by a particular author should be read in any particular order, as many authors reuse the same characters and generally write their adventures in chronological order.

I am not aware of any such links between books by different authors.

Hoping for the continuing adventures of Keren Rhinn, Zae, and Appleslayer. :D

Starfinder....? Please?

So many great memories from these books!

Here is a list of all the novels available as Kindle ebooks and also on Audible, except for the last 2. I tend to listen to novels these days, so it saddens me that I can't do that with all the novels.

I'm still hoping that one day we will get some new novels, and some Starfinder ones as well. With Amazon having direct publishing programs, such as KDP for Kindle and print, and ACX for audiobooks maybe it will become viable for Paizo to do so.

Viability of future novels is big question and beyond my area of expertise. My sister is a book buyer for one of the biggest library systems the US. She said these days, franchise fiction is very reduced. And she said some of these direct publishing programs are rather exclusive. They lock you into their system. I don't think we see the oldest roleplaying game publisher coming out with much of anything new, do we? And if they can't make it work...

But we love fiction and hear your pleas, so that is why we are keeping the free flash fiction alive. And Org Play introduced their new scenarios using fiction, which was so cool. Fiction will be sprinkled into what we do for now.

But I don't want to kill the dream! Haha, so feel free to envision what you would like to see. That's what the forums are for.

She said these days, franchise fiction is very reduced. And she said some of these direct publishing programs are rather exclusive. They lock you into their system. You should reach out to http://annetrubek.com/ Ann Trubek of Belt Publishing. Maybe she would have some ideas? I know that for her own book, I paid her directly via Preorder. Is that an option? Paizo makes the books themselves based on the amount of presales? Because if it is, I would sign up to a subscription! I know it is probably complicated by Author and Work For Hire legal stuff.

There are a number of new distribution methods that have appeared in the fiction marketplace since we started doing novels a decade ago--crowdfunding, audiobook/ebook exclusivity, patronage services, etc.--that we simply have no experience with. What might work for a self-published author may not work for us, and we have a lot of things to consider before relaunching a line that was, for the most part, not profitable for us under the previous business model(s).

Just know that we very much want to share our settings and characters with the world through fiction, even if we are slow to do so. When we have more substantial news than "keep waiting" to share, believe me, we will.

I wanted to use this sale to fill some gaps in my collection.
Sadly, the shipping costs triple the cost of the order.
And there is always the risk of further add-ons by customs and Canada Post (if they open a parcel to examine it, there may be a minor tax charge (<$1), but they have a $10 service charge on top).

All told, it is still cheaper for me to get e-pub versions or order hardcopies elsewhere.

This is all beyond Paizo's control, but illustrates some of the hidden problems they run into with this product line.

Just know that we very much want to share our settings and characters with the world through fiction, even if we are slow to do so. When we have more substantial news than "keep waiting" to share, believe me, we will.

Also that there Dynamite Publishing now has a fiction distribution.

While they were always sold out at my local comic shop, I must assume it either didn't sell well or didn't make enough money, otherwise they wouldn't have let the line drop what...2 years ago?

Just as the book trade has been in a state of flux for the last decade or so, the comic book industry is also really struggling to find a workable business plan balancing physical media with digital distribution and the slow demise of the FLCS. Any delays in new Pathfinder comics are the result of larger issues than the sales numbers of Pathfinder titles specifically. We have some plans in the works with Dynamite, but have nothing to announce at this time.

I've loved all the ones I've gotten - mostly via Audible. Hard to go wrong with this bundle of books, and I'd LOVE both another Liars book and a Count and Radovan book!

Reign of Stars makes reference to the main character of The Worldwound Gambit.

It’s just that though, a shout out. You don’t have to read The Worldwound Gambit before you read Reign of Stars :3

Just popping in to give a shout out to the novels. Love the Pathfinder fiction line, and I hope they find a way to make it work in the future.

Definitely check out the Liars series, Tim Pratt is a great writer!

In the comics world, Marvel has really fallen below the radar and is coming out with title after title that retcons and changes past characters while introducing some truly awful new characters and lackluster writing.

They need to get the price of the comic back down ($1.50?) and sell it at the bigger stores like Wal-Mart, as well as getting it back into the drug stores like before (CVS, Walgreens).

DC has not been immune, though, with some truly lackluster titles that are instantly forgettable.

Diamond going belly up is putting a spotlight on just how bad the comic industry has been doing for the last decade.

If Paizo continues the novels, I'd love to see more diverse casts of varied classes (Champions, Wizards, Clerics, Sorcerers, etc etc) and less of a focus on Rogues and Scoundrels.

They’re were pretty even in what “classes” were used I believe. Most of the characters also were Good or leaned Good.

Eh, I feel there was a minor focus on rogues, thieves, scoundrels, and swashbucklers but that's just me. I can understand a Rogue being the most interestingly possible character though. Still, a little variety never hurts which is why I loved Gears of Faith. :D

What device are you using? I typically use the Books app on my iPad or iPhone. For a laptop/computer, I'd use Calibre.

I use "FBReader" on my android tablet.

I've read and own nearly every pathfinder novel.
The best ones bar none, are J. L sutter two novels absolutely great.

after that, I would go with Nightglass.

Said it on the board before: I*d be down for new Pathfinder Tales, but at most 2 per year. I would not be able to keep up to date with more than that.
They don't need to be in "dead tree" Print, digital is fine (and saves me on shipping to EU).

I thought a lot of them were quite good. Sutter's were great, Nightglass was great... but the Jackson pirate ones were great, the Varian/Radovan ones were great, lots of others. I think "Liar's Blade" remains my favorite. There were really only a couple of them that I found disappointing.

I really hope you can find a way. Crowdfunding freelance editors/authors to minimise the strain on company staff seems like it’d have to be worth a shot. Some of us would pay a fiscally unjustifiable amount for PFTales and SFTales. If there’s enough of us, then there’s the profit (even if a significant number of units are technically sold at a loss). A platform like Kickstarter would mitigate the risk of insufficient demand).

Most of the repeats have roguey characters, but a pretty good mix. All the core classes have at least two examples.

You are indeed thinking of Hellknight, he's the secondary main character of the book.
