News About Starfinder Society's Year of Exploration's Edge

Thursday, April 24, 2020

Hello everyone! The Organized Play team has been hard at work on the summer round of scenarios, including the launch of Starfinder Society’s third year: the previously announced Year of Exploration’s Edge. At this time, we still plan on launching the new year at virtual Origins, an online convention scheduled for June 19-21, 2020, with the release of our first few Starfinder scenarios, though we won’t be releasing the interactive special #3-00: The Last Bite at that time. More information will be available shortly, we are just waiting on confirmation of details from the Origins team.

As with every new year of Starfinder Society play, the Organized Play team, in conjunction with our amazing Art Team, puts together a new symbol to represent the events of the upcoming year. The three different images within this year’s symbol really tie-in with three distinct story arcs scheduled to come out as part of this upcoming year of content—we also couldn’t help but sneak in more art of the Starfinder Society’s newest vessel, the Gorgon! We really think that this symbol brings together a lot of what the upcoming set of scenarios is going to deliver.

One big change in this year is an entirely new cover layout for scenarios that more closely matches the covers of other Starfinder adventure products. In order to make this change, not to mention get some cool looking art for an updated website, we needed a half-page art piece that really showcased what the Year of Exploration’s Edge was all about. Keen eyes may notice that the right-hand side of the image is a bit sparse, but fear not, the team is going to be filling that space with art throughout the year!

There’s still a few weeks before we start showcasing our new scenarios, including some new pretty useful updates to layout that should be welcome by both Organized Play participants and those GMs looking to run adventures outside of Organized Play. Until then, stay tuned to this blog for the latest updates on Starfinder Society and Organized Play!

Until next time,

Yay Year 3 news!! Saddened that we'll have to wait a bit longer for The Last Bite (...seriously, a certain someone needs their dumb apple-y face punched so badly) but, hey, these are the times we live in :) Thanks OP Team for doing what you do - and glad to hear that there'll still be a Paizo OP Presence at Origins Online!

Love the Year 3 symbol! If it contains three images (and the glory of the Gorgon, which presumably is not one of said three images) can we break down what's going on in the symbol? I see:
1. A big ol' misty claw thingy, clasping or perched above:
2. A blueish planet, surrounded by:
3. Red & gold rings, and possibly an asteroid/debris field?

We know from the past blog & Twitch stream that the three 'themes' and level brackets for Year 3 are:
Low Level: dealing with Near Space and Veskarium concerns
Mid Level: exploring The Vast, and starships
High Level: tying up loose ends, especially Athaeum, and maybe meandering by Aucturn?

Anyone want to take a stab at matching images or motifs to level range themes?

Low level - Near Space -> The ringed planet

Mid Level - Starships -> The Gorgon
High Level - Athaeum & the Hellknights -> the claw at the top.

Maybe claw is representation of whatever caused those pact world colonies to vanish?

I have to admit I am a little wary of such a disparate set of goals and such a vague season theme.

Hopefully the team knocks it out of the park but "Exploration's Edge" sounds kind of...generic and nonspecific compared with "Year of a Thousand Bites"

Setting some expectations here... our first two seasons were VERY metaplot focused. Less so in Season 2, but certainly a lot of Season 1 relied heavily in the later parts of "knowing what was going on."

One of our major goals with Season 3 is to make it a re-onboarding point for new players. While veterans will see a lot of cool lore nuggets in the campaign; the stories are intended so newer players can get involved with them without needing to have played a ton of previous scenarios. Similarly, the choice to break-apart the storylines based on level was something that we've heard a lot of requests for in the past, and made sense for us to tackle in a season that was more about the Society "getting back to its roots".

One tease I'm willing to make, is that if you're someone who is into continuity and lore... the plan for Year 3's ending interactive (technically 4-00) is _VERY_ exciting and led to a lot of really cool discussion internally. Seriously, it'll blow some minds! (And trust me, your speculation will be wrong! bwahahaha)

Is it possible, when plotting these out, to alternate onboard seasons with heavy metaplot seasons? That way you always have the best of both worlds.

Honestly, the description for this season sounds like it will be exactly what we need at this point in time.

Considering the season's name, can we now all build super edgy characters?

Everyone's based off of hilariously grimdark 90's comics characters, with more armor pouches than Cable.

And yet, you might still have to enter into a negotiation with your GM to have (2000's technology) pistol-retention cords or single/double/triple-point rifle slings at the table with their interpretation on how a gear-clamp functions :P

I just wanted to note that I love this approach to Season layouts and I hope we see these continue to pop up every other/every third Season or so :)
