Kingmaker Campaign Unlocks!

Monday, May 13, 2019

We've surpassed our goal of 1,000 backers for the Kingmaker 10th Anniversary crowdfunding campaign! This means all backers have unlocked PDF copies of People of the River and Guide to the River Kingdoms.

Our next goal is to reach 1,500, where all backers will be granted:

  • 8 Scenarios: Each of these Pathfinder Society adventures adds a lot of flavor to the River Kingdoms, and each can be completed in around 4 hours. They’re perfect for side quests or for jumping off points to future adventures in the Kingmaker Adventure Path.

  • Pathfinder First Edition Boon—Aldori Dueling: Boons are in-game rewards granted to players that are above and beyond what a basic Pathfinder Society character begins with. In this case, you gain the Aldori Dueling boon, which grants your character proficiency with the iconic Aldori dueling sword. These will be delivered in June to backers paizo.com accounts.

  • Pathfinder Second Edition Backgrounds—Future River Regent and River Pirate: In Pathfinder Second Edition, choosing a background is a key part of building your character, granting unique flavor and providing two ability score boosts, training in a specific skill, Lore skill training, and a specific skill feat. This bonus unlocks two new backgrounds for you, tied to the River Kingdoms. These will be delivered in mid-July to backers paizo.com accounts.

We're also happy to announce that the Kingmaker Adventure Path will soon be sanctioned for Pathfinder Society play! Once sanctioned, rules and chronicle sheets will be available from the Additional Resources page and Adventure Path volumes added to our reporting system.

Help us reach 1,500 backers on the Kingmaker 10th Anniversary Campaign and stay tuned for more exciting unlocks!

I really hope we hit 2,000.

What's the difference between the kingdom manager and the kingdom tracker?

The Kingdom management screen is a GM-Screen of sorts, with infos referencing the Kingdom management rules.

The Kingdom tracker is sort of a Character sheet folio for your Kingdom's stats, cities, claimed hexes, and capital city buildings.

yes. I want both. Keep on signing up folks.

Yeah, it's going slow again, as the next strech goal is another companion, and this time it's Nok-Nok.

What I find interesting is, every time I divide the money raised by the backers, I get a higher number. It started at about $180/backer, now it's at $188/backer.
I would have thought that more and more people get in at the lower levels, not adding on, more and more.
But I guess that comes with the 'pay up front'-method from Gameontabletop. (Switching to a 'cheaper' level is possible, but getting your money back requires contacting Paizo)

I would imagine that they get a slight bump from existing backers whenever they unlock an optional add-on that is not automatically included at all backer levels.

I am waiting to see what happens this weekend with PaizoCon. I expect there will be a bump after that. (which is why I had no idea why the campaign was set to end before the convention initially).

I am waiting until the end of the campaign before supporting as I'd rather not have multiple charges on my card. I imagine there are many others like me, so a large bump at the very end is quite likely.

I've been adding on as it goes along, for various unlocks.

The pay up front method is rather silly, I won't be upping my pledge because of it. I'm happy with the slipcase and 5e bestiary, but I'd buy a few add ons if it ran like Kickstarter

Same here. It just charges you for the difference mach1.9pants so you have nothing to fear.

But some cards have fees per time used, especially if you're in a different country than the one charging your card.

I'm considering getting one or two of the newer add-ons but I'm going to wait until the campaign is nearly done in case there's more that I want otherwise I'm just throwing money at the credit card company for stupid fees that I would only have to pay once if they charged me for everything when the campaign closed instead of paying each time I added a new thing to my order.

This, I pay a CC fee, international fee and the cost of converting from NZ$ to US$ - CC's don't really give a good market rate for that! I didn't quite click that it was up front, just sorta went 'next yes next yes' as you do. If I'd realised I would've waited until the end. And I plain think it's not a customer friendly way of doing business, compared to KS.

Nok-Nok has been added to the "Companion Codex", which is now 80 pages.

Also 1,600 backers have been passed.

Next unlock is the Kingdom tracker at $325k.

At Paizocon it was revealed that the $400k unlock will add a brand new dungeon to the hardcover book.

I would rather have flip-mats for books two and upwards (the prologue already has the noble manor multi-pack & the final fight from book one is covered in the campsite multi-pack).

I would like the devs to focus on the actual maps inside the AP volumes and not add new stuff that isn't needed urgently. You can easily cover two books with one flip-mat multi-pack when you focus on the most needed battle locations.

Dark Archive

1,650 backers reached.

About 13k to the Kingdom Tracker.

Personally i think the campaign will reach a final amount between $400k & $500k.

That will happen today.
Time to implement the $400k goal. ;-)

I was going to do that anyway, thanks for saving me the time!

Now we'll be able to collect so many blueberries!

I'd be amazed if it reaches 300K, let alone 400k. I think reaching the 275k goal would be lucky.

It's now over $325k - barely, but it hit the mark. It hasn't been updated yet to show the Kingdom Folio as unlocked, though.

The Kingdom Tracker has been unlocked.

$20.8k to unlock the "Season of Bloom" add-on to the hardcover.

That will definetly happen in the next two days.

The "Candlekeep" add-on at $400k is still not shown.
It was announced at Paizocon.
I now think $400k or $425k will be the final sum.

I was hoping for 2000 backers but it doesn't seem like we'll get there. Ah well.

The campaign will pass 2,000 within the last 48 hours imo.

$16.5k to the "season of bloom" hardcover expansion (624 pages).

At $375k the companion guide becomes a 96 pages hardcover.

At $400k the hardcover will become 640 pages and include the "Candlemere" dungeon.

It doesn't look like new add-ons need to be announced.

Personally i think this could have been organized better, with more stretch goals like minis, more flip-mats and on Kickstarter.

I'm honestly kinda confused about order of stretch goals yeah. Like Candlemere expansion sounds lot more interesting (if you have played the AP or CRPG, you know its related to certain thingy) than some of the add ones. And the way companions were spaced out makes it impossible to get all of them( I wouldn't have been surprised if we didn't get Octavia&Regongar and tiefling twins at all since both of those are basically "pair of characters sharing a story line", but Ekundayo, Jaethal and Harrim didn't have any chance to get in it seems :'D Kind of wondering why Amiri got priority over them since as iconic having her be tied to one of aps more strongly feels weird)

Like honestly, I think it would have been better to have no companion book at all than having nagging feeling of missing few from complete baggage. That way stretch goals could have been reserved for other stuff and there wouldn't be feeling of "this book is gonna be incomplete"

Marco Massoudi wrote:

Additional physical objects increase the complexity and cost of the project dramatically, even if they are paid add-ons. (Meaning the price you'd have to charge for them may not make them worth doing.) Increasing page count for existing products scales much more linearly.

CorvusMask wrote:

I agree. The OCD in me is disturbed by the book being "incomplete" because the project only overfunded by seven billion metaphoric percent. On the other hand, the base book I'm totally okay with "it's complete, but we'll create more stuff for it if we overfund." But I expected this going in, so really, while it's emotionally disturbing, I'm prepared to deal with it.

I haven't played much of the CRPG yet, but I assume that Season of the Bloom will add important bits to the story and help integrate the ending better. (Assuming they don't change the AP as much as they did the CRPG and have the BBEG so active.) So having that in the book before expanding Candlemere makes sense, especially since Candlemere being as it was originally written is fine. It doesn't feel like something is missing.

And having the campaign go to level 20 is a nice idea. I hope that it's done in a way that makes sense and doesn't feel tacked on. (Which is a big concern for me.)

Not getting all of the companions from the CRPG is a huge disappointment for me. I find there's not enough NPCs in the original AP to really feel like you have many choices for who's going to fill the kingdom roles (which, yes, as a GM is easy to fix by adding more NPCs of your own creation, but the CRPG characters seem really interesting!)
Although we likely won't unlock them all, I'm hoping Paizo includes at least a low level stat block for each of the CRPG characters and a brief write up, like what they do for a few NPCs in the current AP books.

Paizo -- Please have at least a 2 page write-up with a stat block for each of the CRPG characters!

There’s no way to make everyone happy. Some want more encounters (new dungeons) and don’t care as much about extra background or kingdom development (companions). Some want more companions and don’t care as much about additional story (new chapters). Then some want more story and don’t care as much for more physical goodies (maps, unique dice, etc). Then some would like more goodies and don’t care as much about more encounters. Or any combination of the above.

So the devs just offered a mix of everything. This guarantees they’ll get complaints, but at least they didn’t leave any potential fan out in the cold. In fact with this campaign Paizo has really gone out of its way to offer at least something to every faction out there.

Yes, they have. I have huge respect for Paizo for managing to offer something that everyone will want.

There's a few add-ons I won't buy as a physical thing but there's a lot of stretch goals that I'm quite excited for.

Yeah, I kind of hope that someday there'll be a stand-alone companion guide with all of the companions fleshed out, 'cause that's really all I want, since I already have the AP for 1st edition.

It's no big, I certainly understand that most purchasers would sensibly prefer more adventure and a stronger through-line linking the elements together, than write-ups of some NPCs from some computer game they might not even care about!

I can see why they didn't have time to care more for the campaign, with PaizoCon going on right in the middle there. (Which is on Paizo again, they could have started the campaign later)

I would have hoped they would have asked us backers, what to expand more, or which companion to include next.
This whole campaingn started with some hickups, like the initial announcement of the 5e bestiary, but the Pathfinder 1st edition bestiary wasn't set in stone, before the start of the campaign. This was addressed, but left a bit of a sour taste in some peoples minds.

It might be just me, but for me it felt like Paizo not being that responsive through the campaign (again, PaizoCon and stuff).

I know that Paizo is not that fond of Kickstarter, but I can't shake the feeling that this campaign would have raised more money over on that platform (which would have made the companion guide more complete, and much more).

But in the end, I'm glad the campaign is as successful as it is, I hope we still manage to get to 2000 backers and $400k before the campaign ends.

Is there a list somewhere of what addons/etcetera you're not getting at the ruler level?

And how do I add them?

The main page lists all unlocked add ons, and says for each that is included: "Included in Ruler Level". Currently those are:

- the poster map folio
- the kingdom management screen
- the kingdom tracker

To add add-ons, go to "Your Order" then click on the blueish [2] (Add-ons).

Thanks, Franz. I didn’t realise I had to go back and edit earlier stages of my order.

$5.8k to unlock the $350k "Season of Bloom" (that's roughly 29 backers).

That add-on will probably be unlocked today.

I think it is really important to update the add-ons up to the $500k goals ($425k, $450k, $475k & $500k) to inspire possible backers in the last 48 hours.

My biggest complaint on game on versus KS, Paizo said they wanted to support a new/growing community of backers focused on games. But we saw no real engagement with the community.

I'm not a negative nellie, but I'd love to see another expansion of the kingdom development rules. That was one of the most entertaining parts of our Kingmaker game, and I'd love to see more time spend ironing out the hiccups, and adding a little depth to the previous iteration of those rules.

Definitely. I read online about groups 'gaming the system' and flooding in wealth, but in my playthrough, we had above average stats (25 pt buy and lots of 'retired' PCs in Kingdom roles as players dropped out, so our bonuses were way higher than the expected baselines) and *slightly* above average rolls (like, average was 12, instead of 10.5), but were constantly just barely eke-ing by, year after year, with a few buildings and no money to build more.

I was *hugely* excited for the kingdom-building aspect of the game, and it was kind of devastating to see it fail so hard (both being easy to game, and ridiculously hard to succeed with if one *didn't* exploit it and build a bunch of caster's towers or whatever to start).

I usually love the idea of games that build something, or manage something outside of the usual hack-and-slash, like the caravan mechanics in, uh, whatever the Minkai-Queenmaker is called, or some of the social events scattered throughout the APs, or even running the Golden Goblin in Second Darkness (for the brief time that appears to be a thing), but have often found them frustrating in practice.
