Paizo Launches Twitch Charity Marathon: LIVE NOW!

Wednesday, February 24, 2016

The Paizo staff is livestreaming Pathfinder RPG games ALL DAY today to celebrate the launch of Paizo's Twitch channel! At the same time, we've partnered with Humble Bundle to offer more than $350 of digital Pathfinder RPG products at a "pay what you want" price. You can join the livestream directly at the new Paizo Twitch channel and check out the Humble Bundle to grab some Pathfinder PDFs and support Extra Life, a charity benefiting children's health.

New to Pathfinder? Pay what you want to receive must-have products like the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook and Beginner Box. Beat the average Humble Bundle price to pick up titles like the Pathfinder RPG Bestiary and the Advanced Player's Guide. Go over the average at $15 to pick up books like Ultimate Combat and Ultimate Magic. You can also go further and choose the $25 level, and Paizo will send you a physical copy of our award-winning Beginner Box (shipping not included).

As with all Humble Bundles, customers not only decide how much they would like to pay, but also how that money is distributed between the publisher and charity. This is a great way to shore up (or begin!) your Pathfinder PDF collection while doing good! The Humble RPG Book Bundle: Pathfinder program runs from February 24 to March 9.

To celebrate the launch of Paizo's first Humble Bundle, we're livestreaming Pathfinder games from our conference room all day today, with the cast of players and the adventures themselves swapping out every two hours. Check out our official Game Marathon page for a schedule of events.

At the conclusion of Paizo's slate of live events, we'll hand off our Twitch stream to our friends at Saving Throw, who will continue the Pathfinder goodness for a four-hour session of their own before they hand off to The Dicestormers, who will run a four-hour session of The Dragon's Demand. It's a full day of Pathfinder action, a great way to kick off Paizo's Twitch channel.

So! Check us out on Twitch and Humble Bundle and get ready to Pay What You Want, Give to Charity, and Kill Monsters!

One recommendation, if yall do this again, is to not have it coincide with the release of numerous other materials that people want to download. New AP, new players guide for AP (today at some point), 2 new scenarios, new player companion, etc... This really wasn't helpful on the server load. Ive not been able to download anything during the last 12 hours of trying.

Totally fantastic idea with Humble Bundle. I'll be looking to find $15 come payday. Even as someone who only plays the card game, I can't pass up the opportunity to learn more about the world and rules that game is based upon.

Thanks for this fantastic operation.
But now please change your potatoe-server, for it's impossible to get any download file working. Only an eternal during personalization, which is kind of frustrating.

Humble Bundle and Paizo are Awesome! I love this idea for charity! This is an amazing way to promote the individual charities as well as Paizo and Humble Bundle at very little cost to them. I would love it if this happened more often and included complete adventure paths, dice packages, or even minis. I love this idea because it opens doors to people who would love to play but just cant afford the cost, and it allows them to give back. I am super ecstatic about this! GREAT JOB!!!!

Now, if only the servers and watermarking tool could keep up. I have a game in the next state over that I am running this weekend and was hoping to use some of this stuff. :)

Thank you so, so much for your sense of community.

Sincerely,
Raven

This bundle is theoretically great.
A decision really should be made though on whether to do something about the servers, distribute DRM-free via Humblebundle's infrastructure as a stopgap, or wait for people to give up on trying to download their purchases legally.
It would be depressing to see frustration over the implementation of such a cool event incentivize piracy, or simply cause people to shrug and wander off.

this was a lot of fun to watch

If a few days the volume will ease off and people will get their stuff.

Well, for the most part, you already have this content. While the servers are being slammed, you can continue to use the PRD:

http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/

And for the content that isn't there (setting, etc.) ... well, yeah, you're right. It's almost certainly going to end up just getting torrented into the ground. :-/

It strikes me as odd, really. I mean Paizo knew exactly how popular Humble Book bundles for popular things like Star Wars have been in the past, and they could have just stress-tested their infrastructure with those parameters in mind.

I can't help but think that the $400,000 raised so far would have been even more if their servers were up to the task...

But I've also been there as a sysadmin, and I don't envy them trying to run some hokey, probably Adobe nightmare as a large-scale production service. It's probably not amenable to just throwing Amazon Web Services at it and letting it scale as much as it needs. :-(

Paizo,

Is the Twitching causing issues with your message boards or is it a separate issue?

Thank you!

This is awesome and I am glad to take part in it. That said, nothing will download. I suppose the sheer volume of traffic must make the website slow to respond...

Our Twitch stream stopped at 8pm last night, so any slowdowns you're experiencing today are related to people wanting their sweet, sweet PDFs.

I gave my Beginner Box to a school library a few weeks ago. This is the perfect way to replace it.

I'll have to wait until I get paid though, roll on Tuesday!

Darned, forgot to send it as a gift... well, still goes to charity.

Yay Paizo for doing this!!!

Can't send people their product fast enough? What a great problem to have. I'm looking forward to the big influx of players this will (hopefully) bring in.

Now I just need to find a way to convince my local library to carry Pathfinder...

Thanks for doing this, allowed me to gift a lot of books to my sons so they can keep playing as they are moving off to college.

And to help out some charities.

Scarab Sages

I'm thinking of gifting some pdfs to my group.
Can I confirm the pricing structure?

If I 'pay more than the current average (currently $17.11)', I unlock ISWG, APG, Bestiary, etc. Understood.

It also says, 'Pay $15 or more to unlock' UM, UC, Bestiary 2, etc.

Are those amounts separate?

I.e to unlock both, it would (currently) be $32.12, not $17.12.
Right?

They are not separate. As long as you meet the condition for that level, you get that level. So, if the average is above the $15 level, beating the average will get you the "beat the average" level as well as the "$15" level.

If the average is below $15, paying $15 will get you both the "beat the average level" and the "$15" level. I believe when you enter a custom amount, Humble Bundle will tell you what you are NOT getting, thus encouraging you to give more, but also letting you know what you should be getting. For example, put in $14. You'll see it tell you you aren't getting the $15 level and to add $1. Assuming the average is higher, it will also tell you you aren't beating the average and how much more to give. Then put in $15 you'll see that it tells you you aren't going to beat the average and how much more to add.

So, you don't need to combine the amounts. Just give more than the greatest amount if you want it all.

So, in your example, $17.12 would get you everything except the physical Beginner's Box.

Just out of curiosity, is the stream going to be saved and reuploaded somewhere later? I'll have to miss some parts of it, and I'd like to know if I'll be able to see them later.

Yes! We plan on making it available via YouTube once streaming finishes. A link will be available from http://paizo.com/charities :)

Actually, if you go to the Twitch site, you can watch the old streams still. I think that will show you the last video, but on the right click "More Videos" and go back to the oldest one.

And even if you don't go for the bundle, you can still get a free Inner Sea Primer player companion just by providing your email addy. You still need a Paizo account though to get 'em though.

The bundle is a great deal. I bought it even though I owned many of the products already.

I am having problems with the personalization of the PDFs though. It seems the personalization isn't completing, even if you leave the screen there for hours. Coming back to it later and trying to download gets the message about personalizing again. Fixing this would likely reduce the congestion because then people wouldn't have to keep trying the watermarking step.

To all at Paizo,
I just wanted to say THANK YOU!!! This humble bundle idea is amazing. I was able to get some items I'd wanted and help out some kids that really needed it in the process. It's a bit of a moral boost to see that good companies are still out there.

-Best Regards

They are working on it. There should be red text at the top of the message board page with information and links about the problem. In short, new hardware is going in and corrections are being made for the massive amount of traffic they've gotten.

Hi, I am one of the 39 681 [gratz :-)] happy new owners of Humble RPG Book Bundle...well, that's not entirely true, I'm not so happy. I'm trying to download the books from your web for two days already but I only get message from Chaotic Evil Lord Timeout every time.
I know you're experiencing problems because of the unexpected traffic but since it looks like Lady Solution still isn't on her way - would it be possible to put the pdf files directly into the Humble Bundle website, like most of the other book bundles do?

Everything is downloading now; a little slow but I have no complaints. The books are great! I love the artwork.

Sounds like the Chrome time-out issue a lot of us have been fighting. Here's what you can to do fix it.

If you don't want to download Firefox, people have also had success in copy/pasting the address of the timed-out page into IE or Edge. Chrome has a set 90 seconds before it gives up on the connection, and it's taking longer than that with all the files being downloaded.

As many problems as the downloads are causing, I wanted to give a little different feedback: I really love the new(ish) redesign on the eStore checkout system. I remember (a year ago? two?) when they first did the re-coding, I didn't hear a ton of chatter about the changes, but it is really slick!

I got the bundle, activated the codes in seconds, and the site listed for me exactly which PDFs I didn't already have. This probably saved an hour of me poking through all the PDFs in My Download page trying to find the new ones. That was fabulous! And when it came time to process the Beginner Box, I was able to side-cart it with just a few clicks.

I remember the old system, and I think it would have required a phone call to customer service in order to get it to the side cart properly. It probably hasn't been said enough - the new eStore is great!

5 days left and already more than 1 million USD.
It's just impressive!
I just bought them even though I already have them in my native language (German). I would have loved to get another Beginners Box, but up to 65$ for shipping didn't work for me ;-)

Greetings from Germany
Liam

I just wanted to tell the folks at Paizo that this lil' nerd here has a very high opinion of them now x'D

I was never able to get a Pen and Paper RPG group together that lasted more than a week (yay gentrification and general lack of peers, lol) and thus could never really justify buying any books instead of borrowing an old DnD core rulebook from my long-suffering neighbor, but the humble bundle changed everything.
And decided my little DnD vs Pathfinder dilemma firmly in favor of the latter, so if I do get a group together eventually, you definitely have a faithful new customer.

I basically just wanted to say thanks for this amazing opportunity - and for all the twitch streaming and stuff, too, because that was a great thing to do.
Giving people the opportunity to get stuff for cheap is always highly appreciated, of course, but actually doing something with that, making it into a bit of an event and getting the new players all hyped up goes a long way, too.

Okay, I went for it, at a penny below the Beginners Box, as I don't need it.

While I wait for the confirmation;
Can anyone confirm, if I asked for it as a gift, it arrives a link for the whole batch, for one person?
It can't be split, "You can have the rule books, you can have the Golarion-specific books, you can have the AP...".

It should show up as a link for the whole batch. However, you could split up the individual redemption keys for each tier to different people. The products within the tiers cannot be split up among accounts, and key redemption cannot be reversed.

Now that the project is over, I wanted to know how much Paizonians raised for charity. but all the site gives is the number of people who donated (77,508), not the total amount.
Anyone know what the final total was?

BTW, I already had all the PDFs that Paizo was offering, so I instead donated thru the comic books. As a suggestion for the next time Paizo does this, how about doing the Flip-Maps and Map Packs. I would like to have the older ones that were not available early on for download.

One last thing. I was not able to view all of the games. Is there a link I can go to to watch the ones I missed?

Can't personally address everything here, but:

If you missed out watching the livestream, we have it broken out into 5 sections on our YouTube channel here. I still need to go through and add markers to the Mega Video™, though.
