Meet the Iconics: Yoon

Wednesday, July 22, 2015

Today, as part of our ongoing Meet the Iconics series, we introduce the next of the six new iconic characters featured in Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Occult Adventures. This week we meet Yoon, the iconic kineticist!

Yoon always loved fire—the warmth, the color, the brilliant blaze. Fire always changed, and changed everything around it. Yoon could empathize. Fire was also always hungry—Yoon could empathize with that, too, as her family were immigrants in Minkai, and struggled to support themselves.

Not long after Yoon learned to walk, she learned to climb, and immediately took a shining to the rooftops of Oda. Her father only brought her to the city for the big festivals, and she wanted the best view to watch the fireworks celebrating the Lady of the North Star. Once, when she was climbing, Yoon fell, dropping into the river, and her father had to fish her out. Yoon coughed up a seemingly endless stream of water, and her grandmother scolded her, saying it would have been far worse if Yoon had hit the ground.

Yoon wasn't so sure. Just as fire had always been her friend, water had always been her enemy. All her life, it had taken her mother away on ships, for weeks or months at a time. And in the end, it refused to give her back.

Yoon's mother had been a brave warrior and explorer, and had told Yoon many fantastic tales of adventure and faraway places, primarily in the savage lands to the north. She also brought Yoon things, like the stuffed bear-owl creature named Gom-Gom, or the crooked stick used to play a strange northern game. Yet one day, her mother failed to return. Yoon and her father waited, growing more anxious as each week. When at last a messenger arrived and confirmed her mother's death battling siyokoys, a grief-stricken Yoon decided that no one else would ever call her by the same name her mother had. Forsaking her old name, she insisted on being referred to only by her mother's family name, the one her mother's adventuring companions had called her—Yoon.

Gom-Gom was the first to accept Yoon's new name. Eventually, even her grandmother gave in, though she continued to sniff at the impropriety. Yoon's grandmother had been a palace servant to the Shojinawa family once, and despite the fact that Yoon was determined to become a warrior like her mother, the old woman insisted on teaching her about things like poise, discipline, and self-control, arguing that they were just as important to a warrior as to a court scholar. Yoon didn't quite believe that, but did her best anyway, proving a quick and capable student.

Yoon's father fared worse. Still a loving, caring parent, he grew distant and sad after his wife's death, and spent more time muttering about things like imperial taxes and yakuza corruption. The new friends he made were constantly grouchy, and Yoon came to think of them privately as his Bitter Friends. They spent long evenings drinking and arguing in low voices, always careful to keep the windows closed and doors locked, even in the worst summer heat.

One night, as Yoon was once more watching fireworks in honor of the Lady of the North Star, her father went off to meet those friends. Yet even as the colored stars burst overhead, a new light blazed up to the east—a burning warehouse! Yoon went to watch the citizens fight the fire, but when she arrived, she found the place surrounded by imperial soldiers. Not only were they not helping put out the blaze, they were actively preventing those inside from fleeing. An uncomprehending Yoon wept to hear their cries, plugging her ears against the crunch of tetsubos on bone as the soldiers beat back burning men and women and their captain issued a proclamation about the punishment of Hwan rebels.

That's when Yoon saw her father.

He was in a knot of his Bitter Friends, blackened with ash, struggling to break through the ranks of soldiers. Even as Yoon called his name, she saw him fall beneath the soldiers' blows.

Screaming, Yoon raced for the line of soldiers. She might have gone unnoticed in the din, if not for the flaming board she scooped up and hurled at one of the soldiers, striking him in the helmet. As the man crumpled to the ground, several of his companions turned toward her. Yet as they advanced, truncheons raised, Yoon found her view suddenly blocked by her grandmother, wreathed in a snaking cloud of eerie black flames.

"Run, child!" the woman commanded. "If you listen to me only once in your life, run now, and don't come back!"

Yoon ran—through the city, out the gates, and into the surrounding fields. Only when she could run no farther did she finally collapse, exhausted, into the grass, listening to the night breeze and the song of insects. Behind her, the fireworks still continued, but the brilliant lines and stars no longer held Yoon's attention. As she held up a hand, little flickers of black flame flared into life around it. Her own tiny fireworks.

Her grandmother had commanded her to leave. Yoon understood that. She had struck a soldier, and no one harmed an imperial soldier and lived. But where should she go? She had always wanted to see Hwanggot, her family's homeland, but it lay across the water to the southwest, and there was no way Yoon was crossing that much water. In a sudden flash of inspiration, she decided to head north, up through the Forest of Spirits, then down along the mainland. She would be an explorer, like her mother. And she wouldn't have to be scared. After all, she still had her two oldest friends—Gom-Gom and fire. Between the two of them, they'd protect her.

Yet while a stuffed animal and a magical flame can handle a lot of problems, they weren't truly equipped to handle all Yoon's needs, and she might well have starved to death in the ensuing days and weeks if she hadn't fallen in with a mysterious traveler. Seemingly waiting for Yoon at a crossroads, the man spoke to Yoon of her powers, helping her come to understand them even as he taught her to scavenge and forage for food. Yet his greatest gift came on the slopes of the great volcano Kumijinja, where he called forth the spirits of the mountain's fire, presenting Yoon to them like a visiting dignitary. As the kami touched her, Yoon felt something inside her shift, and the flames that roiled inside her emerged, turning from black to a brilliant red. In that instant, she understood the fire she carried, and it understood her. When she woke from her trance-like reverie, the traveler was gone, leaving Yoon to continue her journeys alone—a child in age, yet armed with the courage of her mother, and the fiery wisdom of the mountain.

Thank the kami she isn't chaotic evil! Instead she's a teenage girl out to find her place in the world. Also, it is just me or does Paizo seem to have a strange fixation with fire-based casters?

Very nice. I'm consistently impressed by the cool backstories of Paizo's iconics. It occurs to me that the Meet the Iconics series is still incomplete, though-- we've never gotten a story for the iconic Antipaladin! What dark events drove him onto the path of wickedness? What nefarious goals does he seek to accomplish? And most of all, what's the story behind the illustration on page 248 of the Advanced Class Guide? That poor pig's family deserve some answers!

Gom Gom deserves an iconic write up.

I really hope that she an Gom-Gom are in the ACG, though I wonder how they'd implement her powers.

DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That writeup gave me chills, Mark Seifter you sir are a master of the ink and pen.

None taken, I know what you mean. I just think that if the Samurai and Ninja can get official iconics, the Antipaladin deserves one too. :-)

Don't the PFS pregen sheets contain strangely different backstory components around the material in that last paragraph? (I only skimmed them quickly and piecemeal last night, but I thought I caught some stuff that looked quite different.)

Here we go. That level 4 material, in particular, seems to make more sense as far as "why is this relevant" than the last ¶ of the blog.

Lvl 1 wrote:

Yoon fled the city, intent on reaching Hwanggot, her mother’s homeland. Along the way, Yoon met a kind traveler, who helped her unlock her own pyrokinetic abilities. Yoon still hopes to one day reach Hwanggot— via an overland route, of course, since she despises water. However, she is also eager to see the world and use her newfound abilities to help those in need.
Lvl 4 wrote:

After Yoon was out of the city limits, something inside her broke like a f loodgate. Her fear, her sorrow, her anger—it all spilled out of her in black flame, a fire she couldn’t control. It hurt her. Yoon always loved the fire. But this time, it was cold. It frightened her.

She wouldn’t have survived if she hadn’t met the traveler. The traveler took Yoon as an apprentice of sorts. He didn’t mind the black flame. Yoon and Gom-Gom joined the traveler and his bat for a long journey to the north. As they reached the summit of the great mountain, the traveler called upon the kami of the mountain, a kami who could bring about an eruption if he was angered. Fire leapt out at her. The mountain’s fire surged within her, into her body and her very being. The dark flame blasted out. Not just a little, but an enormous black plume of f lame. She lost consciousness.

When she woke up, the traveler was gone. But he had left behind plenty of food, a nocked wooden walking stick sized just right for Yoon, and maps Yoon had never seen before that showed the way to Hwanggot. The fire inside her distracted her. She realized it wasn’t the black flame any more. The volcano had purged her, and she was born anew. As pure red fire danced from her hand, she truly smiled for the first time in weeks. She could barely control it, but it wasn’t killing her; it was part of her. She was one with the fire. They were changing together.
Yoon descended the mountain and began a new life, just her and Gom-Gom. She would reach Hwanggot, and she would become an adventurer. Eomma had been Yoon the adventurer, a brave warrior. And so was she.

Haunted by her family’s deaths and unable to control the cold, black fire that burst from her hands whenever she was in the grip of strong emotion, Yoon fled the city, intent on reaching Hwanggot, her mother’s homeland. Along the way, she met a kind traveler who believed the black flame was a curse that struck the survivors of the palace massacre—including Yoon’s grandmother. The traveler took her to the top of a volcano to beseech the spirit there to help her. The volcano spirit bathed Yoon in renewing f lame and taught her to unlock her own pyrokinetic abilities. Still accompanied by her stuffed owlbear, Gom-Gom, Yoon hopes to one day reach Hwanggot—via an overland route, of course, since she despises water. However, she is also eager to see the world and use her newfound abilities to help those in need.

EDIT. Well some bits of the blog already seem to have changed—flaming board at soldiers instead of black flame, struck a soldier's helmet instead of killed a soldier or two and have to get out of town for it—, so I'll go ahead and copy the last ¶ as it currently stands so this post doesn't lose any more context.

The backstory I wrote turned out to be too long, but that determination was made after the pregen was written off the original. The consensus was that my original backstory is canon for Yoon's backstory, but not all of it would be fully revealed in this blog. Not only does that make the pregen a cool way to find out more tidbits about Yoon (go check it out, non-Joe reader of this post!), but it also means that we can reveal even more tidbits in other ways in the future, which is even more awesome! I'm hoping for a Pathfinder Origins comic for Yoon. I'd be stoked if that happened, especially if I got to help with it like some of the other Paizonians have with the current ones ;)

So it's extra awesome! (and many thanks to Sutter for getting the original version down to size; there's a fair chance that any chills from the write-up came thanks to his expert hand in editing)

Yup, the volcano visit in particular was at the end, so it happened at a point in the story that was after wordcount was already over. It was only due to expert editing skill that we even wound up with space to mention it in the blog at all, for which I am very grateful!

A prerequisite of being a Paizo Iconic is a Wayne Reynolds illustration. Reiko and Haymoto meet this requirement, but the antipaladin doesn't.

She's not a teenager. She's a preteen at best. She's young enough to be considered a Small creature, as per her PFS pregen, but my best teacher pedagogy puts her at around 8 years old. I don't know if her age was ever confirmed by the creative team. (I thought I heard 8 years old when she was revealed at PaizoCon, but I was told that no age was ever assigned to her back in May. When you're a teacher, sometimes you just fill these things in on the spot. ^_^)

Nice backstory, Mark!

Excuse me, Mr. Augunas. I'm not 8, silly, I'm 8 and a quarter! How old are you? And are you actually a magnifying glass? I've always wanted to find a talking magnifying glass. So all we need to do is bribe the Antipaladin with (evil) cookies so he'll sit for a portrait by Wayne Reynolds. Or bribe Mr. Reynolds with cookies (which may or may not be evil) to whip up a brand new iconic Antipaladin. Either way, problem solved! ;-)

(Or I could just get used to the idea that there will never be an iconic Antipaladin, but where's the fun in that?)

Do the yakuza exist where you live too? They're bad men who you can find in Oda city. There's also pirates, but I heard they live on Aogaito Island. Islands are in the water, so I'm not surprised there's bad stuff there. Do you have pirates too with your yakuza because we had both in Oda? Are they friends or enemies? They say pirates and ninjas are enemies, and we also have ninjas too, but I never saw one because you never see a ninja coming—because they're ninjas, duh!

Wait...I am hearing now that in your world, H2O is another word for water. We can't be friends any more. Sorry!

Like her backstory a lot. And fire. And Gom-Gom.

Part of me regrets reading the pre-gen, but at the same time, some things made a lot more sense (as was mentioned and explained previously).

Now that hockey sticks are a weapon... how long until Casey Jones makes an appearance in Pathfinder?

Wait, the pregen has her as small? Does the stat block have the ability adjustments for the Young template?

That's how it should be IMO, but it is kind of funny how that makes her a pregen that wouldn't actually be legal for anyone to build on their own in PFS.
