The England GM Team Marches on its Stomach

Monday, March 16, 2015

Every once in awhile, I receive a neat story from the field that I think others might be interested in. Stories that provide insight into how Pathfinder Society is played or how communities work together to bond are very interesting reads—whether that be playing a game in the middle of the desert or what gamers in Turkey are like.

Today, I bring you a story sent to me from Paizo's co-recipient of the 2014 Volunteer of the Year award, campaign service award recipient, and England Venture-Captain Rob Silk. Here is his awesome write up.

It's tough when you are far from home and you are running three games a day at a long games convention. The adventures run over time, and the next game slot draws nigh. All your players have rushed to the restaurant queue and it's a l-o-n-g queue. The food is expensive, and it doesn't look too healthy. A hardworking GM is a hungry bear!

You need "The Wyrd Sisters Kitchen." Over here in England, our GMs' welfare is often cared for by these two superwomen, Chris Brockley-Blatt and Carol Tierney. They set up a cook house on site and, for a very modest fee, GMs can subscribe to their between-game meals. The food is delicious, and the company is convivial. It's for "GMs only" so we can support each other with confidential moans and groans or tips and hints between the games. There is always time for a group hug, and no one goes away hungry. When it's really tough going and you just can't get away from the GM screen, they even deliver to your games table!

This has been a huge help in recruiting GMs because Pathfinder GMs are the only ones who can get this benefit. Many other games systems look jealously on while we go off to eat this lovely grub. We have a team of very happy healthy GMs thanks to these wonderful Wyrd Sisters. The original third "sister" was Tonya Woldridge, who was in right from the start but went on to Venture Captain in Canada. So you can imagine the calibre of these amazing lasses who are also our Venture Lieutenants and GMs, and who organise their own Pathfinder conventions and raise money for charity. We love 'em.

Thanks for the write up, Rob! And thanks to Chris, Carol, and Tonya for your efforts to help make PFS awesome! I always enjoy hearing unique stories from the field and hope you do as well. If you have an interesting story from the field you think others would be interested in, please email it to me along with some photos.

Have a great gaming week and I look forward to reading other's comments about The Wyrd Sisters Kitchen.

The Wyrd Sisters are awesome. Not only would some of us not had any food due to time constraints but they also cater for the non standard i.e. vegetarian; can't eat onions and garlic; slimmimg friendly. There is always more than enough food for everyone and they raise a good amount for charity. We are very lucky to have these 2 ladies as Venture Lieutenants and Wyrd Sisters.

Shouldn't it be marches? Great story, though. Would love that here in Denver.

I never saw that T-Shirt Rob is wearing.
Is it only available in England?
I looked on Paizo's site, and it was never offered.
Are there others out there.
How about a link.

Those are the special Paizo volunteer shirts that you get if you GM at Gen Con or Paizo Con (or presumably PaizoCon UK).

Bummer I wanted one too.

Thanks to the Wyrd Sisters, I hope to be able to sample your delicious fare again soon!

That's Maca, not Rob Silk. You can see Rob here.

And the purple t-shirts were given out to volunteers/GMs at PaizoCon UK 2014.

It was all Tonya's idea really, we're just keeping it going. Can't have hungry GMS

I'd better plan on bringing more beer then :)

A marvelous effort to both ladies!

Once I return home and branch out in my own space, I and the missus might have to do that here... Or I might do it in the Raleigh region for now as well... Australia is still a couple of years away...

hmmm, I wonder if American might like Cornish Pasties?

now I'm hungry again... bah.

If we can't get the Wyrd Sisters, can we get a dedicated GM-only food truck at GenCon? Those lines get pretty long!

Well Rob it seems your secrets out

Perhaps the good sisters should look to expand now?

If your looking for a (un)holy order to join search out " The sisters of perpetual indulgence"

But they do a lot of work for HIV charities

And before I get the comments ..... I'm not a member!!!!

Maybe they should start licencing franchises?

See, there is this issue of how to cook for a couple of people :P

Though, since I had a move across the pond last summer, is possible it will happen at some Ontario functions. Just got to get familiarized with my surroundings. But it won't be the same without my partners in crime.

I am very proud that Carol and Chris BB have kept on going. It really does help out at the Cons, as well as bring people together.

Regarding franchises..don't think we need to go in for licensing. But I (and am guessing Carol and Chris) would be happy to share the processes and organization.

Thanks for writing such an awesome article Rob!!!!

Miss you all!
