Don't want to wall of text you either, GM_Panic, but I had another thought. The Monger(meaning trader or facilitator) family I conceived as the beginning of the party "face' but I don't have much social there, I could swap Broker for Pilot(spacecraft) and we could recruit a new player willing to play the people person, Broker, diplomacy, persuasion skills etc. That might balance the group better.

Hey, don't Encourage him to add more people, I'm trying to keep it down to us four...

Okay Navarre, that's not an unreasonable goal, a smaller number is likely to move faster, fewer schedules need to line up and we would fit better into the hardly large scout ship.

I'd posted that a little tongue in cheek, obviously it's Panic's decision how many players we need. But I do like a small core of folks who are posting regularly; things, especially combat, just goes faster.

Well, there is also the matter of the big bed in the captain's cabin.

Nathan spent a lot of time in there looking it over.
It's like a dream to him.

Hey Panic, not trying to be pushy, but I just wanted to double check. Are we gaining any experience at the moment? Also, are we four enough players to accomplish what you had in mind or do we need more?

Very good point,

And you do in deed, Ok
your get +4 points to spend on skills you used in the game.
Max 1 point added to any one skill.

And you get 2 Points to spend on new skills.
This spend dose not make you Skill 0 but Skill 1.
So two NEW skills at +1

:)

As for Adding more plays I will only do this if YOU all think its needed.
I am happy to keep it to four.

Also note there are only 2 Bedrooms on this ship as is.
A Bunk bed in room 7 get 2 of you somewhere to sleep,
And that mean two of you sharing the Captains bed hehe.

Doctor

Obviously Nathan thinks he should get the Captain's Quarters, mostly because he's Cable, He who Heals.
But he also points out that there is a perfectly good bed in the Med Bay, which is explicitly designed for longer occupancy given its function.

So, somehow I read Panic's post before they put up the second half (after the smile.) I was going to jest about Cable taking the Captains Quarters, but that Navarre was going to curl up on the end of the bed...

Edit: I'm pretty sure Navarre doesn't need his own quarters and will sleep on any available furniture.

I'm not sharing with Navarre. I don't want fleas :)

As far as skills, I am thinking of advancing Mining, Explosives, Melee and Stealth. I would like to pick up Gun Combat: Energy Pistol and Language: Aslan.

Monger Abebe *He that flys* wrote:
"...Also any volunteers to drive Rusty back? ..."

I wasn't sure how Panic was going to have Venssa leave, I was sort of hinting that she could drive it, so we had worked her out of the narrative in a functional way.

I'll get a post up after I finish a couple cups of coffee...

8BAC87

Actually that was my thought as well, Venssa could drive back we all go on the ship, I just wasn't sure if anyone else wanted that. so I called for volunteers, Venssa could ask to be sole driver and we could agree, if GM_Panic so wants it. It would keep the active players together and that's a good thing.

Edit Let me expand on this it would be better for role-play purposes if Cable wanted Abebe around to keep an eye on him because of the injuries, because Abebe is responsible for Rusty more than anyone else, if Abebe doesn't drive Rusty back.

My skill choices:

Upgraded skills
Sensors +1
Athletic(Dex) +1
Melee(Unarmed) +1
Vacc Suit +1

New skills
Pilot-1
Persuade-1

When Abebe gets back he'll get a notice that he passed his Pilot License examinations and has both Basic permits and General Commercial License i.e. Pilot 0 and Pilot 1.

That is not a bad idea, having Venssa take rusty back. Look lets get you all to rusty, I think you need to take off, so I can just add a little more. :)

Doctor

I am going to assume that the 'new' +1 skills could also be allocations to our current +0 skills to bring them up to +1, correct?

Medical +2
Computers +2
Pistols +2
Jack of All T +2

Navigation +1
Leader +1

yes

Cable, did you mean Navigation or Astrogation? Also I assume the Pistol is energy pistol not slug pistol :)

I was considering Astrogation as one of the new skills, I figure one of us should have it. But I really see Navarre as more of the 'ships mechanic' than anything, so wanting to take a lot of engineering. I figure next time around he will take melee blade, because he wants to build one of the swords :)

Depending on Cable's answer I may change up a little, but I'm planning on:
+4 points to spend on skills you used in the game
Athletics: Co-ordination + 1 (+2)
Gun Combat: shotgun + 1 (+2)
Mechanics: + 1
Engineering: Life support + 1

2 Points to spend on new skills.
Engineering: Electronics + 1
Engineering: Power + 1
(I figure he can get away with these since he has some practical knowledge of both from his past experiences. But M-Drive and J-Drive are just around the corner)

Hey Panic, it shows there are 'holding cells' in engineering, is there any reason Navarre can't turn one of them into a 'bedroom' it's not like it would be smaller than his 'room' back in the 'tunnel'

I assumed the ship woke you up, but NAvarre will do so, give me a second. I wasn't sure that Navarre should answer the comm, though I guess he did make the roll

Edit:
Ship Info:
Aslan Noble stealth-Scout-ship.
100T [Aerodynamic ship hull] [normal speed in Atmos Mk3 sonic]
Armoured hull DM 3 [40p, per foot]
Main power unit Fusion [H2O]/ [Back up Batteries 3 days, life support only 12 days]
Entry by Loading ramp under ship, + 2x Iris air locks, 1 front Under flight deck, and 1 back top above engineering.
Jump Drive 1 [Fuel Depleted] But has Fuel scoops + Fuel refiner [H2O]
Hard mounts two [Top wing* Turrets but no weapons fitted]
Crew 2 [+3 Life supported] [Total 5]
Compartments: As seen in deck plans
It can take 15t of cargo, in ROOM 5 and over ships spaces.
Thrusters Space + Flight + Vertical Take off and landing.

This thing was made to be fast and light. Someones personal transport, Ships armor is light for its kind. That is down to the air streaming, as this thing moves fast in atmos, also looking at its space manoeuvrability its more like a space fighter than a scout. It has turrets but no mounted weapons, in there place is more Enhanced ships long range scanners sensors and some kind of electromagnetic Jammer system.

So what tech level is 'Steed'? More specifically does she have artificial gravity on board or are we walking around with the wonderful magnetic boots from 'The Expanse'?

Abebe and Narvare both respond talking over each other. Abebe continues, "Hi Sheriff, we were trapped by a rock slide, in an old Aslan base with angry security robots. We are okay! Everybody alive and functional. Oh formal, this is 'She who flys' and well -preserved Aslan scout, she saved our lives. Request landing, fuel limited. This ship is unarmed."

Abebe turns aside quickly and asks everybody, "Did anybody get Rusty or do I have to walk back for it?" He seems a bit anxious.

Sorry Abebe, I didn't include your response from the spoiler, because...spoiler.

Since Panic narrated you flying the ship, I posted waking you up earlier to fit the narrative the gm gave. Not sure if you didn't read that information or not.

The ship is TL14, AI is TL16

Read it, didn't fully grasp the timing.

That ship is really advanced, aside from just take part labeled A put in slot B with diagrams showing everything, how do we have any idea how to work this ship? Feel like a Roman drover asked to fly a F-35.

Right? I was thinking that just because we didn't have the technology available to us, didn't mean we couldn't learn about it. Maybe?

Roman drover asked to fly a F-35, That is not the same thing,

You have to offer like for like.

Tech levels and how they work, is talked about a lot in Traveller RPG groups. And the two things that come out of it is that higher tech tends to mean made better. Same just better. Ships in Traveller RPG are in surves for 100s of years. Things are made to last and made to be fixed.

So lets take that Roman drover and his basic wood card and think about them finding a 2024 Olympic house and carriage rig.

That drover could pick up working that state of the art carriage fast,
Unlike his card it has, spring supposition, independent axles, pneumatic tyred wheels, huge Draft horses bigger than anything they have ever seen. But still horses, interchangeable and redundant parts.

To him its still a wheeled vehicle pulled by horses. They would be amazing at the build, the speed, comfort, control, braking and the soft ride. But they would understand it, It would just be an improvement on what was know.

Think of ships like that in traveller, High tech just means it moves better and father, built better with a few mods like and AI auto pilot.

But still known,

A TL 14 ship would certainly have gravity, so I guess the fancy magnetic boots would only be on our vacc suits....

Curious to know what thing-a-ma-bobs the Aslan vacc suits will have on them...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The only change I have is that Artificial gravity is not a thing in this version of traviller.

I have a real bug-bear problem with artificial gravity settings if not done with Newtonian physics. Rotation, speed up slow down etc. Not becouse it brakes physics but for the fact if you can make Artificial gravity what the hell are you doing firing chemical and fission weapons at each other. Why not just a gravity mass homing Kinetic torpedo, or why not have shifting projected gravity shields. Just pop that same plating you have on your dekcs on the outside of the ship and them rip incoming objects apart with fased gravity pulses. making your own gravity is god level over powered. And what dose sifi use it for, for getting around shooting TV/films on earth where showing shifting G's is hard becouse your always in 1g

rant over.
No Artificial gravity, nope no no how.

DUMB see

Thanks GM_Panic for that explanation, while I'm not too sure about it being realistic in the sense of how technological progression has worked, say how good Alan Shepard (Mercury spacecraft) would be piloting a TL 14 ship's boat; it's more than good enough for simplifying tech differences.

One other point, the Aslan scout has Thrusters. Now in standard Traveller these are reactionless drives which are as "magical" as Jump drives or artificial gravity. If they are Newtonian drives (or even Einstein no real difference if not heading to light speed) then with the limited mass on board it would have only a few minutes of 1g acceleration. More precisely Delta V (change in velocity) would be very limited. It comes down to very long orbital times to get from one planet to another. Probably doesn't matter for getting to the 100 diameter safe jump point to much but further could take months or years to get around within a solar system.

Again your game your rules, but as the pilot I'd like to know how this will work in the future. The webcomic "Freefall", quite funny, pointed this out a while ago when a ship transferred from a planet to a distant station. The ship took off and then received multiple loads of reaction mass from somewhere as it traveled to keep up it's high velocity.

The rocket equations are harsh and cruel, and no matter how efficient a drive is, at a certain and quickly reached point, you must lose a large percentage of mass to move the rest.

And once again, I've used too many words, so good night and thanks for running this.

The best campaigns are the ones when you log in to twice as many discussion comments as gameplay comments AND a video featuring Nurse Chapel. You can 't make this s$*$* up ...

The part about the lack of gravitic inter-ship missiles was brilliant though. I had thought up using a grav-belt as a grav-grenade quite many many years back: you can imagine how that seemed, the idea of a 100,000 grenade. I still thought it was cool at the time ;)

NAVARRE - sorry, I missed the question about Navigation.
If GM is okay with it, I am going to eliminate that and make it Life Sciences.

Good point about the thrusters and in truth they are "Space tech magic" Well kind of, what I think they are is EM/Ion-Mega-drive variants that have been made to work. Is a push but we are talking Aliens and the future here.
But still I like a little reality. The Fuel for them can be ether Electricity / or low levels of cracked H20.

I keep reading the posts, then going back and reading them again. Sadly, my major was art not science. But I am resisting the urge to call my physicist son-in-law and asking him to read the posts and explain all of it to me :)

I at least got to play 'yeah I saw that' with the Nurses Chapel video....

Edit: Cable does the designation: SHIELA." SHE-LA have a particular meaning?

I was doing the same thing yesterday, looking for a cool name that had reference to a mount, or breed of animals. I found a name from legend involving king Solomon, the Queen of Sheba and a mare that became the progenitor of the Arabian breed of horses, but I didn't love the name, so I'e kept looking.

I'm not opposed to Sheila, just asking if there is a deeper meaning.

Sorry GM_Panic I can't agree that the thrusters are only kind of space tech magic, they are that absolutely. All the ion drives that you listed are effectively plasma drives. The reaction mass is fast moving electrons or other particles. This make them efficient but they do not violate the momentment laws of physics as we know them. No matter how high or good the tech where you need equal mass-energy to move. Momentum must be conserved, move one way, call it positive, the amount of negative momentum is equal the other way. There is no way around that. Traveller thrusters usual explanation is that it puts a small amount of the byproducts of the fusion of the liquid hydrogen out and uses artificial gravity to increase the mass of what is expelled enough to transfer the momentum to the ship needed. That's as magic as saying the inventor went to Neverland and asked Peter Pan for the secret of how he flies.

The fuel isn't the issue, reaction mass may be the fuel or anything really, something with momentum must go the one way for a mass to go the other way. The energy source could be total conversion of mass-energy to laser gamma-ray photons, the ships mass energy will deplete till there is nothing left. It would be very efficient but still be a lot lighter at arrival over long distances or even short one if fighting a high gravity field, like earth.

Ouch this is way too long, again the things work as you want them, but to obey physic as we currently know them is very hard. Hope you take this as just trying to see how ship will perform. If it obeys physics we only have minutes of 1 g thrust before running out of mass. The mass can be fuel or not.

Also remember that the 100-ton listed for Traveller ships is 100 dtons or 100 14 cubic meter of volume(around 500 cu. feet) the mass would be much greater. 14 cubic meters if the volume of 1 metric ton of liquid hydrogen. And if you replace the that with water, as you seem to be doing, the mass of the ship would go up massively(Okay shoot me for that one). LH is about 7% as dense as water. Just saying, if you try working formulas, which I wouldn't, my 3 physics courses and math minor collapsed into dust decade ago. Can't do the math anymore. Never used it, just the comp sci stuff.

Shutting up now.
