Female Elf Level 3 ; HP 15 (of 15)

I apologize for killing your PC CucumberTree. I did enjoy playing with Mister Wanderful, very interesting personality. I hope your next PC will also be as cool!

I am beginning to understand why the funnel method of creating PCs is recommended here, Mirinde is a blast to play!

HP: 8/8 AC:14

Ok, so.... Is it kosher to loot Mr Wanderful? He has some interesting items :P

While I appreciate your compliments, Are you really sorry about the murder? Really? I have a feeling that you enjoyed it deeply. Here's hoping that the stars don't align against you. :)

Lawful Male Human Acolyte of Justicia | 24 yrs, 6' 2", 170 lb. Cleric 3 | AC: 15 (w/ shield) | HP: 26 (of 26) | Ref -1 | Fort +2 | Will +3 | CL Check Modifier +4 (Spells/Turn/Heal) | Disapproval 1 | Luck 11

By the way DM, I ran across this pretty cool idea for making Disapproval act differently depending on whether the cleric is Chaotic, Neutral or Lawful. It's worth a look!

Cleric Disapproval by Alignment

Lawful Male Human Acolyte of Justicia | 24 yrs, 6' 2", 170 lb. Cleric 3 | AC: 15 (w/ shield) | HP: 26 (of 26) | Ref -1 | Fort +2 | Will +3 | CL Check Modifier +4 (Spells/Turn/Heal) | Disapproval 1 | Luck 11

Breaking the egg sounds so, so dangerous to me... but at the same time, we are a party of players and adventurers both - so what do we all think? Break it? I'm torn between what my character would do and what I, as a player, would want to do if the group is solidly for breaking it.

And Mirinde just helped to solidify Clancy's IC decision. Sounds like two against, and one for at the moment. Anyone else? Do feel free to take action against Clancy if so, no hard feelings on my part!

HP: 8/8 AC:14

Break it! :D

Roscoe may still act this round.

Oh, and anything you sacrificed for the earlier test in the Cataphract has been restored to you, including spells or ability points.

Female Elf Level 3 ; HP 15 (of 15)

Does this include spells that were lost due to failed castings (Spell Checks)?

No, just the things you sacrificed for that specific test. You will still need to rest overnight to regain your spells.

HP: 8/8 AC:14

Everyone, the game has been really fun, and the characters are coming together very nicely. It has been a great experience for me.

But (of course there is a but) I have also found it too railroad-y for my personal taste, giving me that feeling things will happen in a certain way (or we will die), regardless of my/our actions.

My hat is off to DM Brainiac, I think he has done a great job as DM in keeping the pace, the action, the engagement, and a perfect rythm. I think the issue here for me may be the ‘episodic’ nature of DCC, whether on how we jump from one adventure to another, or how we jump from one scene to another within an adventure. I am just too old of a grognard, and always think there should be a sandbox part of some sort to every game :P

That being said, I think this is the right time for me to bow out and make room for others. Thank you for running the game Brainiac, and thank you to the great cast of players. Hope to see you around the boards!

No worries, Artemis. DCC definitely embraces a certain style of play. I understand if it’s not your cup of tea. Thanks for playing with us!

Mister Wanderful’s player has decided to bow out as well. How are the rest of you feeling about the game? Shall we call it here, or try to recruit some new players to continue on?

Lawful Male Human Acolyte of Justicia | 24 yrs, 6' 2", 170 lb. Cleric 3 | AC: 15 (w/ shield) | HP: 26 (of 26) | Ref -1 | Fort +2 | Will +3 | CL Check Modifier +4 (Spells/Turn/Heal) | Disapproval 1 | Luck 11

I'm a huge fan of DCC, and though I tried to run it once in pbp I wasn't comfortable with it. However, YOU run the game brilliantly in this format, so I'd love to keep on going, if you're up to it!

Female Elf Level 3 ; HP 15 (of 15)

I would be more than willing to continue this Brainiac, although I think 4 PCs is a weak group. (Perhaps we can hire some henchmen?). If not then we could recruit some additional players.

Alright, I'll put a recruitment thread up to try to get some new blood into the mix. :)

Welcome Aldizog and Mage of the Wyrmkin! To start, go to this online generator. Create two characters with the default settings, then you may choose one of them to level up to 2.

The current party members are a cleric of Law, a neutral halfling, and a chaotic elf. There is also a neutral warrior GMPC, but I may have her sit out if we get a third new recruit.

Let me know if you have any questions.

This generator chooses background for us, which thereby chooses class in some cases (one of my two is a halfling). Is that intended?

Arrays are 11/13/14/4/12/11 (the halfling) and 10/9/7/7/10/10 (a sickly cooper who really has no business being an adventurer).

I am happy to play the halfling. Just have to figure out the best angle to RP that 4 Personality without annoying the rest of the players. Kender-ish? Over-the-top preachy Lawful? Constantly making bad jokes? Happy to take suggestions. Actually, I might go with "Am I invisible?" - that is, he isn't overtly rude, or gruff, or annoying, and he isn't a wallflower, but for some reason nobody ever listens to him. His words just don't seem to land with any impact whatsoever. And yet he keeps trying. Totally fine with the other players ignoring his suggestions - I really don't want to play an unpleasant character, but I do have a 4 Personality.

Aldizog wrote:

Yes, if you happen to roll up a dwarf, elf, or halfling, then that’s your class. Human characters can choose their class.

Female Elf Level 3 ; HP 15 (of 15)

I would not worry too much about the Personality score and how it affects your RPing, although I do like the "invisible" halfling aspect. Keep in mind we do have a halfling in the group already, perhaps the two of you know one another?

DM Brainiac: Should we level up to level 2?

Yes, you can level up to 2 now! I am waiting to see if Roscoe will post before I officially wrap up this adventure. Either way my next gameplay post will likely be Monday morning.

Lawful Male Human Acolyte of Justicia | 24 yrs, 6' 2", 170 lb. Cleric 3 | AC: 15 (w/ shield) | HP: 26 (of 26) | Ref -1 | Fort +2 | Will +3 | CL Check Modifier +4 (Spells/Turn/Heal) | Disapproval 1 | Luck 11

Welcome! One thing to keep in mind, the party can only have one 'active' halfling throwing luck around. I guess they tend to step on each other's toes or something when there's more than one?

Thanks for the level, GM!

I guess I'll play the inept cooper as a Thief. It would add some unique capabilities to the party in a way that another halfling wouldn't do.

I only have the Beta rules. Is all that information generally accurate?

The generator gave him 1 HP for level 0.
Level 1 HP: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Level 2 HP: 1d4 ⇒ 2

What would I have for gold and equipment?

Degan the Unready:
Neutral Male Cutpurse

Thief 2

STR 10 (+0)
AGI 9 (0)
STA 7 (-1)
PER 7 (-1)
INT 10 (+0)
LCK 10 (0)

HP 5 (of 5)

Reflex Save +1
Fort Save -1
Will Save +0

AC 10 (armor??)
Attacks +1 (Crowbar 1d4)

Lucky sign: Survived the Plague (modifies magical healing +0)

Skills
Backstab +2
Sneak Silently 30%
Hide in Shadows 25%
Pick Pocket 30%
Climb Sheer Surfaces 91%
Pick Lock 45%
Find Trap 25%
Disable Trap 25%
Forge Document 30%
Disguise Self 20%
Read Languages 10%
Handle Poison 20%
Cast spell from scroll 1d12

Background:
Degan never was particularly good at anything, even being a cooper. He is strikingly average and innocuous in most ways... but that can have its advantages. Sickly after surviving the plague, and always a bit cowardly, he did find over time that he was overlooked often enough that he could filch a little here and there and nobody would suspect him. As long as he was cautious and not too greedy, he could make a little more by thieving than by the efforts of his honest labor. He has had a few opportunities to accompany brave worthies into the unknown, and by virtue of cowardice sensible caution, and bad luck befalling his adventuring parties, he has been the scavenger inheritor of a small pile of adventuring gear.

If that all looks good, I will create a profile for him.

Liberty's Edge

are you full? I've played and run DCC.

Aldizog, I believe the beta rules are out of date. This Quick Start Guide has everything you need to get through level 2. According to the Core Rulebook, a 2nd level thief starts with 3d10 +(1d6x100) gp!

Qstor, we are full at the moment but I’ll keep you in mind if another slot opens.

Ah, I see HP are 1d6, not 1d4.
L1 HP: 1d6 ⇒ 1 1 as the minimum.
L2 HP: 1d6 ⇒ 3 2 after Stamina penalty.
So new total of 4 HP.

Wealth: 3d10 ⇒ (8, 8, 3) = 19
Wealth: 1d6 ⇒ 3
319 GP total.

And thief skills are now d20-based, not percentile (weeps silently in Basic). I will make the changes and create the profile.

Male Halfling Explorer 2; Luck 14/18

I'm Back!

Will get caught up on all my games this weekend.

1d6 ⇒ 2 Explorere Hit Points

Female Elf Level 3 ; HP 15 (of 15)

OK some rolls now:

Mirinde the Elf Seer Hit Points: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Spell Learned: 1d27 ⇒ 19 Patron Bond. Since Mirinde already knows that spell, does she simply roll again, or chooses another spell?
Mercurial Magic effect: 1d100 ⇒ 32 Circumstantial Magic: 1d10 ⇒ 1 Cast only in the dark of night.

Mirinde, you can choose another spell.

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Degan is ready; he's got a lot of gold and I am not sure what he can spend it on. We can see what comes up.

I have gotten so used to 3.X games where everybody is above-average that it should be interesting to play a character who isn't naturally good at anything.

DM Brainiac wrote:

Mirinde chooses the spell Chill Touch.

- Manifestation: Hands appear skeletal.
- Mercurial Magic: Can only cast this spell in the dark of night.

Clancy, looks like we had been doing manifestation for spells wrong. Mirinde has the right of it in her being able to choose how it manifests:

"When one spellcaster faces another, he does not necessarily know what spells are being thrown at him; all he can observe is the visual effect. This entry provides options for the visual manifestation of a spell. When a caster first learns a spell, he learns to create it with one of these manifestations. (The player can roll randomly or choose.) The same spell may have completely different manifestations in the hands of different casters."

Degan, everything looks good with your character!

Mage of the Wyrmkin, let me know if you need help with your character creation.

Ooh, that's better than a random roll for sure! I kinda like the ones Clancy has, though - even if some are annoying! :)

I'll get my level up done soon, probably tonight when I get home.

Lawful Male Human Acolyte of Justicia | 24 yrs, 6' 2", 170 lb. Cleric 3 | AC: 15 (w/ shield) | HP: 26 (of 26) | Ref -1 | Fort +2 | Will +3 | CL Check Modifier +4 (Spells/Turn/Heal) | Disapproval 1 | Luck 11

Spell: 1d11 ⇒ 7
HP: 1d8 ⇒ 5

Paralysis again. Okay if I pick Holy Sanctuary? That seems fitting to Justicia. Thinking the glowing aura manifestation would work.

Yes, you can pick that spell. I was hoping to hear from Wyrmkin about their character, but I'll go ahead and post in the gameplay thread later today, and hopefully they can join us soon. Just need to settle on which module to run next.

Female barbarian 2 | AC 12 | HP 2/26 | Ref +0, Fort +1, Will -1

Zathra Level 2 HP: 1d12 ⇒ 12

Damn, Zathra is tough. :D

Lol! Degan, remember you can burn Luck to increase your save result. As a thief, you add 1d4 for each point of Luck burned. You can roll as you go to see how much you need to burn.

Also, at level 2, you are still on death’s door for 2 rounds before dying, giving others time to try to heal you or stabilize you. Instant death is for level 0 characters! :)

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Oh, okay. It felt like Paranoia there for a minute! He still may not be long for this world.

The description for the stunned result only says the target "falls to the bottom of the initiative count." However, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and allow the backstab. The cultists would have still posed a threat this round, but between Clancy, Degan, and Zathra, they all go down.

Roscoe is still up for this round before the priestess and the rat devil!

Male Human Thief 3 | AC 11 | HP 7/7 | R +2 F +0 W +0 | Luck 12/12

Understood, and I won't expect that in the future. It was more for RP than mechanical advantage; Degan will prefer to go after hindered or unaware targets since he is a bit of a coward. He can be pressed into combat by a serious threat but still will try to fight dirty.

Hello everyone,

I posted my desire to join over in Recruitment, so figured I'd give a short introduction here before I build my character. So far, I only have the Quick Start Guide for DCC, but I have played once or twice. I also grew up playing AD&D in the late 80s and 90s, so the rules feel very familiar to me.

I took a long hiatus and didn't get back into RPGs until about 10 years ago, so if you look through my aliases on here you'll see a lot of D&D 5e, PF1, and PF2 characters, though I've explored various other systems.

Let me know if you think the group needs bolstering in any area. I can aim to design a character in a particular direction, though of course the dice will decide some of these things.

Actually, maybe I'll just roll things right here.
(fyi, I'm using the 2019 QuickStart Guide -- it looks like the 2023 version omits a bunch of stuff, including the second half of the Occupation table)

Spoiler:

STR: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 4) = 13 (+1)
AGI: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 1) = 8 (-1)
STA: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 5) = 13 (+1)
PER: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 2) = 10
INT: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 4) = 12
LUC: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 6) = 12

HP: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Lucky Sign: 1d30 ⇒ 4 (Raised by wolves: Unarmed attack rolls)

Occupation: 1d100 ⇒ 75 (Mercenary: Longsword + Hide Armour)

Starting money: 5d12 ⇒ (6, 8, 5, 11, 3) = 33 CP

Random gear: 1d24 ⇒ 12 (Holy Water, 1 vial)

Female Elf Level 3 ; HP 15 (of 15)

Welcome Baldric!

My advice is to play what you want and let the party dynamics sort itself out.

Male LG Mountain Dwarf Wild Magic Sorcerer 4, Barbarian 3 | HP: 58/58 | AC: 19 | Init: +2 | Pass Perc: 9 | HD (4d6+3d12): 4+2/3+2 | Speed 25 | Sorcery Points: 4/4 | Spells: 4/4, 3/3 | Rage: 3/3 | Saves: STR+2 DEX+2 CON+5 INT+0 WIS-1 CHA+5 | Resistance: Poison | Inspiration: 1 | Active effects:

lol -- well, that's the advice I give other people too, but some groups like a balance. Also, I'm not entirely sure of the current make-up of your group (elf, halfling, thief, cleric?).

I had my fingers crossed for dwarf, but I think you have to roll that on the occupation table (?). At any rate, with okay STR and STA, I'm likely going to build a warrior, but I'll work on the details tomorrow (depending how long it takes to disassemble my garden before the frost hits!).

Hi gang, this is Baldrick:

Meet Isteván: Son of poor farm labourers, half-raised by wolves, turned to selling his sword to escape a life of poverty (more details on his character sheet).

I think I have the more important details here -- unfortunately, my local game shop won't have the DCC core rules for another 2 weeks, so possibly I've missed a few details. Let me know if you spot anything that needs changing!

If this looks acceptable to you all, I'm happy to join in if / when you see fit.

HP rolls:
HP: 2d12 ⇒ (11, 9) = 20

Welcome, Istevan! I'm looking over your character sheet:

Attack: You should add your +1 for your Str modifier to hit and damage.

Other than that, everything looks good! Feel free to join the game whenever you are ready. Perhaps you arrive at Five Points as the others are getting back with the survivors. You'd be eager to hear the story they have to tell! :)

Male N Human Warrior (Berserker) 3 | HP: 36/36 | AC: 15 (16) | Init: +2 | Mvmt: 25 | | REFL: +0 FORT +2 WILL +1 | Active effects:

Starting at 2nd level is a bit weird (especially in DCC) -- would Isteván have any additional equipment or is it best to just carry on with the starting gear until he earns some money?

The core rulebook offers guidance for starting good at higher levels. A 2nd level warrior starts with 5d12+500 gp to purchase equipment.

Male N Human Warrior (Berserker) 3 | HP: 36/36 | AC: 15 (16) | Init: +2 | Mvmt: 25 | | REFL: +0 FORT +2 WILL +1 | Active effects:

oh dang! That's a lot of money

Starting GP: 5d12 + 500 ⇒ (3, 9, 3, 3, 10) + 500 = 528

I guess I'll buy Istevan some gear!

Male N Human Warrior (Berserker) 3 | HP: 36/36 | AC: 15 (16) | Init: +2 | Mvmt: 25 | | REFL: +0 FORT +2 WILL +1 | Active effects:

Is there any point in inquiring about special metals / equipment?

For example, I noticed that there are silver-tipped arrows (perhaps silver crossbow quarrels would be available at the same price?), but I dunno if there are other metals or weapons that would be useful.

Anyway, I'm open to suggestions if there's something that I should have.

Oh, also, what's the exchange rate? 100 cp = 10 sp = 1 gp?

And.. er, I have this extra Hide Armour, if anyone needs it? (or can it be sold?)

Yes, 100 cp = 10 sp = 1 gp

You can sell the hide armor for half price.

There aren't really any rules for any weapons other than silver-tipped ones so you should be fine.
