After a good night's sleep (for some of you at least. Hammocks aren't very comfortable if you're not used to them), you are awakened by a sailor before sunrise and prepare for your mission.
On the top deck, sailors prepare a dinghy and then lower it to the surface of the water where you can then activate the swan boat.
Following Venture-Captain Benarry's directions, the swan boat makes its way along the sea, using the wind and ocean currents to help steer the craft to the reef.
As the sun rises above the horizon, a wrecked ship caught atop a coral reef comes into view. The swan boat glides through the flotsam of wrecked ships as it heads towards the reef. As you sail closer, you can make out the figurehead of the ship upon the reef; a well-worn carving of a sun orchid. The combination of rough currents in the deeper water and the threat of circling sharks means you can’t approach the wreck directly, however, you soon discover there is one spot on the reef where you can safely land the boat...
The skeletal network of pink and red coral, outlining a series of tidal pools, presents only a single accessible break large enough for a small boat. The air is brackish here, with the scent of salt and dead fish hanging heavily. The coral tapers to razor-edged, ridge-like points at varying heights, while the tidal pools are slick with algae. In the shallows, wooden planks and flotsam from many shipwrecks are visible in various stages of warp and decay. A decaying ship lists along the outer edge of the reef, with a large hole torn through its hull like a menacing open maw. The painted name Pride of Aspenthar is just barely visible in flaking remnants of ornate gold script on the ship’s prow.
Map is on slide 3. Please place your icons in the pink box.
Red areas are spiky mounds of coral. These are difficult terrain and dangerous to walk on. (Acrobatics check needed to halve damage).
The lighter green-blue areas on the map (which is a sandy, rocky shoal) represent areas that are only 1 to 2 feet deep; these are difficult terrain.
The darker areas are deep water, riddled with outgrowths of razor-sharp coral and subject to dangerous tidal currents. Those, you would need to swim through (DC 15) and may take damage on a failed swim check from the patches of sharp coral within.

Previously.
Having spent the night in a comfortable inn on shore, Nistivo returns to the ship early in the morning for the mission. Regretfully leaving his carriage behind once again, he at least appears outfitted for action. His robes have been replaced with white leather trousers and a beautiful chain shirt, every link of which looks to have been individually polished until it gleams! His backpack is itself a work of art, with masterfully-done pyrographic images on the leather. And finally, the crossbow he holds looks to have engraved designs on the stock
Currently.
Nistivo wrinkles his nose at the smell of rotting fish. "Most unhygenic," he remarks. He holds a small perfumed cloth up to his nose to help block the scent. "After you, good colleagues."
He's careful to test his footing with every step to ensure he stays as dry as possible on the route to the ship.
I'll deduct 5 gp to pay for the night at the inn and a good meal.

could someone add my token in the box please? I'm on my phone...ty!
Patros drops his shield in the boat, realizing he's going to need both arms to swim.
my AC is now 18...my swim check will be at a +7 after my ACP...
Mind your step around the coral...getting cut with that would hurt..and likely leave a nasty scar...uneven cuts. Patros says, somewhat knowledgeable regarding the subject.

Grilgoth is sure to eat her fill (of free food) before departing. She is noticeably less picky than Nistivo. Before they depart the swan ship she swallows a Blood Boiling Pill and casts Mage Armor on herself from a scroll. She carefully places her remaining scrolls in a waterproof scroll box for safekeeping and is certain that her familiar is snug and safe in her familiar satchel. Grilgoth calls in a favour earned as a Highborn Hero.
Grilgoth now has Improved Initiative as a bonus feat for this adventure
If someone could copy my character's token over that would be great. I have my character's name on the map for now as a placeholder. :)
"At least the water is not too deep here. It could be worse."

GM Roll4initiative |

Many of the shallow tidal pools contain tiny fish and other aquatic creatures that hide within the algae fronds, waiting for the tide to come back in. Shark fins occasionally slice through the deeper water that surrounds the reef, as the hunters scout for easy prey.
The group sploshes through the knee deep water on the shoal, avoiding the spikey coral. Coming around a bend that heads east, openings between the coral allows the group to head north or continue east.
Looking into the area to the north, four giant crabs scuttle about in their search for food. Noticing you splishing through the water, their beady eyes turn and they stare at you with what seems like curiosity.
Those of you with ranks in Knowledge (nature) may make a Sense Motive check.

Grilgoth is knowledgeable about nature but the moods of these creatures should be left to druids and hermits nevertheless she does try.

Updated Lanel's avatar to his art in the map. :)
Lanel took a while to get used to the heat and the found the hammocks awful. His mood wasn't the best when he woke up that morning and kept to himself.
"Alright, no grilled seafood today." He will heed Grilgoth's warning and stay away from them as they advance.

![]() |

Ekadan nods at Grilgoth but keeps his hammer at the ready.

![]() |

"Ugh! Leaving them alone will be no trouble at all. Everyone knows that crabs are bottom-feeders. Disgusting creatures."

![]() |

Dr. Bellows has very little trouble adjusting to the hammock the night before, and actually arrives half an hour early, although is rushing a bit and seems convinced that he was half an hour late.
"Aww, they're kind of cute!" he says as he watches the crabs, bow in hand. "Leaving them alone is probably the best idea, though. They're not very cute when you get them angry, heh."

Grilgoth knows that these are coconut crabs. These aquatic vermin are smaller than the average giant crab and, being mindless, are immune to mind-affecting effects. Their claws sure can pinch and possibly latch on to you (grab & constrict).
But whatever is glinting from the sunlight in that tidal pool sure is enticing.

The Doctor fires a blunt arrow in an attempt to stun the crab covered in yellow barnacles. The arrow cracks the shell and the crab flails its claws in shock.

Botting Lanel...
With the current of the water on the reef surging back and forth, Lanel stays put in the knee-high surf. Seeing the beady eyes and snapping claws of a giant crab poking out above the waterline between rippling waves, with a flick of his finger he sends a magic missile at the green crab.

Obviously not risking its life, the green crab darts away through the water, then climbs onto the coral mound as it flees toward the small inlet that leads to the open sea.

I wonder if the former owner of that ring was on the ship? We'll let the higher up people in the Society know...they can check the records and such. At least one family will get closure... he says with a shrug.
Think those will come in handy? he nods to the wands.

![]() |

Lanel nods solemnly. "It's a sad thing when the one you love-... is that a wand of burning hands?? Would you mind if I do with that? The magic, might not be as strong as mine but this could certainly save up some later"

![]() |

Grilgoth looks at the assembled loot.
"I can make use of the cure wand for the benefit of the party of course. I don't think that anyone else can easily use it."

"Bah I didn't get to hit anything!"

Nope..only thing I can use it for is to pick my teeth...so have at it.. Patros says as he heads toward the ship.

"I've been--I'd be able to use the healing wand too, but I've already got one of my own, so you can hang onto that one."
Avery pockets the sand dollar as he starts making his way to the ship.

GM Roll4initiative |

~THE SHIPWRECK~
The group divvies up the loot and trudges through the surf toward the ship...
The ship is in reasonable condition, all things considered, except for the large hole gouged through its hull. A rope ladder hangs down from the top deck, ending about three feet above the ground. It’s brittle, as if it’s been soaked and dried in the hot sun many times, but it is intact. Within the large hole, the hold appears dark and empty.
The hole breached the side of the ship, not the front as one might expect if it had simply run aground on the reef. The location of the gash suggests that the Pride was swept sideways into the jutting coral. The ship is obviously too damaged to repair, even with spells such as mending or make whole. A visual inspection from the outside clearly shows that the ship has three levels.
The entire ship lists at a gentle grade, sloping down toward the great hole in the ship’s side.
It is not difficult terrain, but anything dropped (including a disarmed weapon) rolls or slides toward the breach at the end of each round at a rate of 5 feet per round.

![]() |

Grilgoth looks at the ladder and is not sure if it will hold or not.
"Well if someone has a rope on hand that would be good as a backup in case the rope ladder were to fail."

![]() |

"Allow me." Lanel takes his silk rope and uses mage hand to take one end around the main mast and back again over the stairs.
"I'm not good at making knots. Anyone wants to tie it to the coral?"

![]() |

Likely not a good idea...the coral would likely chew right through the rope. I'll just tie it off here by the hole... Patros says as he grabs a dagger from a wrist sheath and pounds it into the hull. He then grabs his rope and ties a knot around the hilt.
Better than nothing... he says as he gets out a floating torch and heads into the hole carefully.
ioun torch

GM Roll4initiative |

As the group considers using a rope instead of climbing up the ladder, Grilgoth, Lanel, and Patros move towards the wrecked ship to inspect the dangling ladder.
Suddenly, from the tidal pool underneath the ship, a writhing mass of clacking shells and snapping pincers rushes from the surf, their spider-like legs twitching across the sand.

GM Roll4initiative |

@Lanel: Your mage hand is not expended since the crabs came out before you got to the ladder.
The doctor knows that crabs are indiscriminately carnivorous and therefore the swarm can be distracted by meat, including any taken from your rations or the carcasses of the crabs from the previous encounter.
Being mindless vermin, this mass of diminutive crustaceans is immune to mind-affecting effects and that a weapon strike won't affect the entire swarm. Best to take them out with area-of-effect spells or items.
He also knows that casting a spell while covered in a swarm is very distracting.
A caster level check (DC 13) is required to get the spell off.
