Wounded Wisp slides

You have been summoned to the Grinning Pixie, the ship—and mobile Pathfinder lodge—of Venture-Captain Calisro Benarry, which is currently moored off Tempest Cay, the northernmost island in the Shackles.

Venture-Captain Calisro Benarry, a powerfully built half-orc, stands defiantly on the deck despite the driving winds. Sparse clouds are resplendent with the calm colors of twilight, but waves lap roughly against the ship as sea spray mists the air.

After you have been chosen for this game, please introduce your PC and feel free to engage in roleplay with each other before we start, if you wish.

Portrait of Lanel I made.

A young human male with blonde hair and piercing blue eyes arrives at the ship, practically dragging a bag with several bulky items. He's wearing a courtier outfit, fancy cuffs and a big jeweled belt, a fashionable reversible cloak and an adventurer's sash complete with 5 alchemist fire flasks attached to it. A small Cracked Pink and Green Sphere ioun stone circle his head.

"Good GODS, why is it so hot here? And humid??" He takes a large sip to his almost empty waterskin. He pulls the neck of his shirt to the side to feel some of the breeze better.

Wounded Wisp slides

A lanky, buck-toothed sailor with mousy facial features cocks an eyebrow at Lanel's question.
"I reckon it's a combination of the midsummer sun and the moisture comin' from the sea."

Welcome to the tropics, lad." he gives a crooked, toothy grin as he helps Lanel up the gangplank to The Grinning Pixie.

The Exchange

The clatter of hooves and carriage wheels can be heard coming down the docks. A few seconds later, a small but elegant and well-appointed carriage pulled by a pair of horses slows to a stop near the Grinning Pixie. A well-groomed man climbs down and tosses the reins to the buck-toothed sailor. "Take care--I want everything immaculate when I return."

Speaking of immaculate, the man's clothing is so white it almost gleams, and the decorative trimming testifies to how expensive it must have been to purchase. His hands and forearms are covered by long white gloves, but he avoids touching anything as he strides up the gangplank. He nods politely to Venture-Captain Benarry and Lanel. "Nistivo Cirek, at your service. I trust this mission will be a profitable one."

I'll fix up a tagline--I think I mistakenly made the profile as a normal alias instead of a PFS character--d'oh!

A thin Undine, wearing what appears to have once been a suit and since seems to have been torn and patched several times and modified to better fit armor, appears with a bow and quiver slung over his shoulder and makes his way towards the small group forming. "And I'm sure it had been!" he says, before pausing and thinking for a minute. "No, has been? Was being? No, wrong direction entirely. You said will be, right? Will be. That's the later one, right?" He glances around. "Sorry. Doctor Avery Bellows, demonologist and monster expert."

Lanel's clothing style is 'extremely fashionable' but on the other side of the spectrum from Nistivo's. Full vibrant colors. Purples, blues and oranges.

He looks around the deck for a good location before unfolding a small camp chair from his pack and placing a silk pillow on top of it. He sits down with a contented sigh. "I do hope they'll have the tea service ready soon."

Wounded Wisp slides

Calisro Benarry gives a nod to each of you upon arrival. When all of the Pathfinders selected for the mission are present, she wastes no time getting down to business.
"Good. You're here. Come with me.” She leads the way to a room below decks, where a hanging lantern illuminates a canvas map of the isles of the Shackles, with currents and depth marked, fastened to a wooden table with rusting nails. A model of the Grinning Pixie, carved from cork, shows the ship’s current position.

“I hope you landlubbers aren’t afraid to get your feet wet." she says, eyeing everyone except Doctor Bellows. "Here’s what I’ve got for you: you’re here to find a Thuvian caravel called the Pride of Aspenthar. The Pride’s captain was Jaheem Quinn, a half-elf with a magical knack for the water. Not a wizard or such, but I’ll be damned if the water didn’t do what he asked when he asked it. I hired Jaheem to take our agents on a mission to the Gloomspires, and neither he nor his ship ever returned to Drenchport. Divinations confirmed that the ship was lost and suggested that no one was aboard, but that could mean anything from them all abandoning ship to a hold full of dead sailors. The winds around the Eye of Abendego are always perilous, but sending Jaheem and his crew into such dangerous currents is one of my few regrets.” The half-orc pauses and shakes her head, her face hardening with resolve.

“The winds have been strange of late, and it seems they’ve turned up news of the Pride—wrecked, of course—near Tempest Cay. It’s a rough place where outside eyes aren’t welcome. You won’t find anyone willing to give account to strangers. I’ve developed a number of connections here, so I’ll see what I can discover on land about any survivors. Your task is to seek out the wrecked ship itself. I’ve been studying these waters and their currents a long time. If a ship has wrecked, it should be around here.” She stabs at the map with a strong finger. “At low tide, the water should be shallow enough to explore on foot in relative safety, without the waves lashing down. You’re to look for any information about why the ship went down, especially if it had to do with these currents. If you can, keep an eye out for Jaheem’s log. It should tell us quite a bit about what happened.”

“Follow any leads you find, but if something’s too much for you to handle, come find me on Tempest Cay. You can ask for me at the Drowned Dwarf in Drenchport. Otherwise, I’ll meet you back here.”
Her gaze lingers on each face in turn.
“Right. I’ve got to go landside to catch my contacts while they’re in their cups but still talkative. Be ready to leave an hour before dawn. Enjoy the comforts of the ship tonight, and make sure you visit the quartermaster; I’ve requisitioned specialized supplies for you, and you can ask her any questions you might have. Oh,” the half-orc grins, showing gleaming fangs, “and ask her to wish you luck.”

Some locals believe the mostly absent ruler of Tempest Cay, the druid and pirate captain called the Master of Gales, must be controlling the mysterious winds and currents.

Knowledge (geography) or Knowledge (local) 15+:
The pirates of the Shackles utilize the Eye of Abendego as a part of their defenses. Many of the residents of these isles are involved in piracy to some degree, which is related to their unwillingness to answer questions from outsiders.

Knowledge (geography) or Knowledge (local) 20+:
The Eye of Abendego is a vicious, perpetual hurricane. Although its exact cause is unknown, it formed roughly at the time of the death of the god Aroden. Its intensity is variable and unpredictable. Its weaker winds can tear the sails off the biggest ships, while its stronger gales can reduce a ship to splinters.

Knowledge (geography) or Knowledge (local) 25+:
Pirates and rough seas are not the only dangers in the Eye of Abendego. Sailors who have braved the outer rim of the hurricane also report encounters with ghost ships, aquatic undead, powerful elementals, and vicious sea monsters.

Knowledge (geography) or Knowledge (local) 30+:
No one has survived a journey to the center of the Eye.

The Concordance of Elements is interested in preserving elemental balance, and the recently formed Concordance faction is interested in developing a healthy relationship between the Concordance of Elements and the Pathfinder Society. Ranginori, the good-aligned elemental lord of air, was recently freed from his long imprisonment by an alliance of Pathfinder Society and Concordance of Elements agents.

Knowledge (religion) or Knowledge (planes) 20+:
A small religious group calls itself the Cult of the Eye and worships the Eye of Abendego, believing it to be a divine being which they call the Deluged God. They believe their deity has created these new weather patterns to lure souls toward the island to be recruited as new followers.

Knowledge (religion) or Knowledge (planes) 25+:
A now-dead cult called Storm Kindlers was a splinter group of Gozreh followers who believed the Eye of Abendego was a manifestation of their god. A new rising cult in the Sodden Lands has taken up their mantle and name and seeks to understand the Eye. They reject the beliefs of the Cult of the Eye.

Knowledge (religion) or Knowledge (planes) 30+:
Scholars of the planes report recent disruptions in the Plane of Air that may be related to the shift in weather patterns.

The Venture-Captain raises an eyebrow and glares at Nistivo.

"You must realize by now that the Society pays their agents quite well. With experience comes many other benefits as well (i.e. Prestige Points). As for salvage rights, you'll need to discuss that with your Faction leader. As far as I know, the Pride still belongs to Captain Quinn's merchant company."
She tries to give a pleasant smile before taking her leave.
"Now, if you'll excuse me, I must meet up with my contacts. Be sure to visit the quartermaster. She's from Tian Xia and her tea is delicious."

Sorry. I am unsure how to handle claiming Salvage Rights here. If this was a non-PFS home game, I'd create an entire adventure around it, but for now, it's "beyond the scope of this adventure". However, there is the Ship Vanity you can purchase with prestige, allowing you to use Profession (sailor) as a day job, which is pretty awesome. I suppose you could purchase that vanity down the road and say that after all the red tape & trouble you went through, you finally claimed the Pride through salvage rights.

The quartermaster's cabin is chock full of various weapons, armor, and other various items both magical and mundane resting on shelves, small tables, placed on wall racks, or spilling from overstuffed chests.

The quartermaster is a brightly dressed tengu who introduces herself as Kakikko. Her graying ruff feathers betray her age, but her eyes are bright and her bearing is spry and cheerful, in contrast to the seriousness of the venture-captain. It’s clear that she enjoys her post.
“Greetings, fellow Pathfinders,” Kakikko says. “You’re here to find the wreck of the Pride of Aspenthar, right? Good. I’ve some gear for you. But first, some tea.” Kakikko gathers an exquisite set of porcelain teacups and saucers. She reaches for a pot of tea warming on a small stove and pours a cup for each of you.
The tea is quite possibly the best you've ever had.

"Ah! Yes, yes. Your gear."
She digs through a nearby chest in the cluttered cabin and gives each of you a potion of water breathing. "Now where did I put that wand?" she mumbles to herself as she moves items aside. "Ah! Here it is." she says as she flops a leather jerkin from the counter onto the floor. She holds up a long, thin twig of driftwood that was underneath and hands it to you. "This is a wand of touch of the sea. There are 10 charges left, so be mindful that you keep track."
Finally, she pulls up a chair and climbs onto it, straining to reach a high shelf. With a grunt, she climbs back down and gives you a hand-sized wooden shard.
"This isn’t just any splinter. It’s a token that transforms into a swan boat.” The quartermaster leans forward, clacking her beak. “This keelboat propels itself by magic. It will only last for one day, but that should be much more time than you need. Now, do you have any questions?”

Kakikko nods at Patros.
"The ingredients come from both nations, of course." she says with a wink.

They call us jinx eaters, and they think we can dispel bad luck. Does she believe it, or is she just ribbing me? Who knows, anymore? But, good luck, all the same!”

He very enthusiastically takes a sip of the tea offered. "Oh, this is fantastic. A perfect blend. I don't think I've had better tea within the past ten years or so!"

"...although that may depend on which ten years..."

Bellows holds out the potion, offering it to the other Pathfinders. "Anyone want a second? I shouldn't need it." Bellows has the undine alternate racial trait that gives him swim and water breathing, so he shouldn't need the potions or the wand.

I have neither the need, finances, or carrying capacity to buy any extra supplies, lol.

Ekadan goes shopping to buy some aquatic gear.

"I have a question. The air is warm but what about the water? Any idea how many feet deep this shipwreck is at? What can you tell us about the general area especially any nasty people or creatures in the general area? How do we activate that boat?"

hey Avery..if you need some gear, let me know...I can get some stuff..as long as it isn't too expensive...

Ha! As long as I'm not the butt of the joke, I can appreciate the humour. That's a special bond you've got with the skipper... Patros says with a grin.

Kakikko scurries about to get your purchases.

"The Pride is wrecked on a sandy coral reef, so it sits mostly above the water. You'll be out there in the morning at low tide. The water should only be about knee high in places when you're there. Don't linger too long, though. Around late morning when the tide comes back in, the reef will be much deeper."

"There are all sorts of dangers lurking out there in the ocean. Aquatic undead, monstrous sea creatures, and powerful elementals to name a few."

"The command phrase for the swan boat is 'Hurry! Get us out of here!'"
She gives a little chuckle.
"Quite humorous, yes?"
