Mafalda shakes her head as she puts an unused stool under the red cabinet.
"We're lucky we arrived here now. A few more weeks and this laboratory would have become a war zone."

Desmond breathes a sigh of relief. At the very least, that could have hurt some of the group and he would have had to patch them up. Better to have stopped it before it happened. "Nice job."
The half-orc wanders over to one of the shelves and browses the contents, not touching anything in hopes he doesn't set something off he doesn't understand.

GM Frost |

Graeyson carefully place the pressurized flask under a bucket nearby. Mafalda on the other hand, meticulously places a stool on the unstable cabinet.
With the threats eliminated, they can begin searching around the area. Looking over the shelves, Desmond finds that it’s filled with many now-useless items, but also an acid flask and an alchemist fire, both contained in glass ampoules that they can keep with them.

The flasks, beakers, alembics, and other containers contain a whole spectrum of now mostly useless alchemical substances. However, one substance recurs often which they determine as dried bruorsivi pine resin. They also infer that the setup suggests that multiple experiments with the resin were happening simultaneously; each researching a different property of the substance. Taking some of the dried pieces of resin could be a good idea as evidence of this mission. Moreover, Razzm locates rare ingredients worth 21 gp as well as an additional ampoule of alchemist fire.
Also, in an easily visible beaker is a fingerlike object, made of flint, etched with runes in the Cyclops language, and painted with a golden

Desmond comes over to take a look. "Fingernail? Or finger?" He tries to see if this might be some preserved part of the body.
Medicine: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
Doubtful, but in the beaker, I could see it being a preserved or petrified finger.

GM Frost |

Desmond finds that it is not a preserved finger, but something that is made of flint carved into a finger shape.
Having thoroughly searched the room, they can return and check the other room in the east. Here, one wall of this room is completely covered by a 30-foot tall bookcase, with a sturdy ladder on a rail providing access to the higher shelves. Both the ladder and the books are obviously sized for large creatures. On the other side are what appear to be reading desks and chairs, though they are hidden under draped sheets gray with dust. Central in the room, near the entrance, stands an irregular block of a warm yellow material, a creature of some kind visible within.

Mafalda, with the help of Eando's phrasebook, notices a general theme in the books. While some of the titles can’t be fully translated, due to referencing proper names of people and places now lost to history, it is clear these are alchemical treatises, books about magical research, and strangely enough, books about gardening.
Voron knows that Koloran was far too ancient of an empire for paper, leather, and other substances in this room to last until now without extensive magical or alchemical treatments. As it turns out, the cyclops who built this place used both. Razzm detects the presence of a preserving agent off the surface of the paper, sheets, or leather in this room.
Looking at the carefully placed sheets, whoever left this room intended to return. Anyone peering under a sheet finds a comfortable leather chair and a small (for Large creature standards) table that contains writing supplies such as quills, parchment, and an inkwell. The ink in the well has gone bad over the years, and the inkwell now functions as an acid flask.
The strange block in the center of the room seems out of place. It is a large block of amber, and inside it is a Medium creature. Though the view is distorted through the block, the creature looks like a squat, broad-chested dog with skin covered in sores.
To retrieve the stone finger, the trollhound has to be freed from its prison. Freeing the trollhound can be done by disrupting key spell points on the block with another successful DC 18 Arcana or Nature check.

![]() |

Voron is certainly fascinated in the item.
Thank you for translating, Miss Sorbet. I certainly can't ascertain the significance of the phrase at this moment.
With no other obvious way to inspect it he casts detect magic on it.

The mage speaks softly as he assesses the oddities in this room.
These writings have been preserved unnaturally for a very long time. The creature held within that block is a trollhound. They have aggressive regeneration, which can be cancelled by the familiar convention of fire or acid.
He squints to look closely at the stone finger hanging from around it's neck.
It looks awfully similar. However, to retrieve it I'll have to free the beast.

"I tuned this thing to not use fire, because I'm just as flammable as a troll..."

![]() |

Mafalda prepares her bow once more.
"You might want to take a step back, then, Miss Sorbet. I did not think my fire spells would have been particularly useful here."
Mafalda is ready. She will take her position behind the melee attackers.

![]() |

Razzm notes the creepy finger statue with interest but his ears really perk up when he realizes his companions are getting ready to free the trollhound. This is gonna be interesting, no doubt about it... He tightens his grip on both of his shields, ready to bash the thing back to sleep.
Moved Razzm up to the front line. Ready for the trollhound to be released. What could possibly go wrong?

![]() |

Desmond moves out of the way so the Pathfinders can deal with the troll hound. "Do you want to surround it?"
"Hmm, Regeneration. That would solve a lot of the problems fixing people up."

![]() |

"Other inventors use fire to power their inventions. I do not, for obvious reasons. It seems that, for the moment, I will be relegated to a backup role." She then loads and draws her crossbow and stands behind the other Pathfinders.

![]() |

Razzm rustles through his bag for a bit before sheepishly acknowledging that his only source of fire is some torches and a flint and steel, all looking brand new as if they just tumbled out of some Adventurer's Pack. "But I'll hit it for ya!" he offers helpfully, brandishing his twin shields.

![]() |

"I can cast a simple fire spell. Should be enough to trigger the creature's weakness when delivered through my arrows."

![]() |

Voron nods in approval of Mafalda's prepapredness.
I sadly, did not prepare Produce Flame. he admits.

GM Frost |

Yes, Graeyson, you found alchemist fire in the previous room. Also, you can assign the trollhound as your prey for Hunt Prey.
Voron fails to disrupt key spell points on the amber block that is holding the trollhound, and further attempts to unravel the magic are ineffective now. They must chip away at it in a tedious, hour-long process. Each of you can attempt a DC 21 Athletics check to excavate the amber. If the amber is exposed to any amount of acid damage, you gain a +1 circumstance bonus to their check.

She says after a few minutes of ineffective hacking, her voice with only the slightest tinge of frustration.

GM Frost |

With their combined efforts they are able to damage the block, but after a long duration of chipping and hacking, they are unprepared for when it
eventually breaks. Everyone takes a –2 circumstance penalty to your initiative checks in the upcoming encounter.
When the amber breaks, the trollhound is freed and immediately attacks. I moved those who attempted to remove the amber next to the trollhound except for Voron who used a ranged spell. I positioned everyone in flanking position, assuming that will everyone do before combat, anyway.
