RPG Superstar 2015 Top 8

Yeah I've never held to starting adventurers having to be late teens/early 20s (or whatever the equivalent is for a particular race). If that's what you want, sure. But you could also be an older person who lived a fairly uneventful life and thus never quite gained the XP, per se, to level up until whatever it was that thrust you into adventuring. After all there are plenty of low level NPCs who never level. Alternatively perhaps you had an eventful youth, but something happened that "Weakened" you so you might effectively be level 1 despite at one point you might have been more. Heck, if the GM allows it, if you wanted to play a middle aged or old character, incorporating age adjustments as needed, that would be fine.

Well, here's my first full draft of the character. The NPCS I've created under relations are, of course, up to the GM to accept or refuse above and beyond the character himself.

Ionatan Deverin

Description: The smile on this man's face is the first thing most see. It appears open, warm, inviting, and completely relaxed. His deeper baritone voice carrying easily as he tells another story. His nearly coal-black hair and pale skin combine to mark him clearly of Chelish descent. His blank golden eyes mark his celestial ancestry clearly to any who recognize the atttribute. What little gear he has on him appears either new or very well kept, though occasional fresh stains from the night's activities aren't uncommon. Whether he is wearing his armor, a suit of leather with small metal mugs riveted to it as additional protection, or not, his rapier is clearly visible and readily accessible. The inherent threat doesn't seem to match his pleasant social attitude, but it is there all the same.

Background:
Born in the Deverin Villa of Magnimar in 4684, the family was enthused by the positive sign of an obvious Aasimar born within the family. For years they considered him a good omen. As he got older, though, they realized how easily and frequently he would play the adults off of each other, and how little of his time was spent doing anything meaningful. As he kept getting older, the family was more and more disenchanted with who Ionatan as becoming. He reveled in the family's ready supply of alcohol, but continuously failed to actually learn anything about brewing or even the administration of a business. As much as the family was coming to dislike him, though, their customers were coming to like him. His ready smile, stream of stories, and absolute encouragement of others to keep drinking kept him popular with the tavern owners and with their customers. The family was beginning to resolve themselves to letting Ionatan earn his keep as the primary sales agent instead of having him do anything more central to the business.

When the Pathfinder Society started renovating The Rusty Flagon Inn, Ionatan began spending more and more time at the one location instead of spreading his presence, and sales influence, around the town. He has found something which appeals to him in a way he hasn't quite recognized, yet. Hobart Deverin has now written him off completely, expecting no beneficial contributions from Ionatan ever. Thing is, the path appearing before the Aasimar's feet could end up helping renew House Deverin in unexpected ways.

Spoiler:

[spoiler=Deeds]5 Panache

* indicates a Deed always active while holding positive Panache count.

* 1st-level Deeds *
Derring-Do (Ex): At 1st level, a swashbuckler can spend 1 panache point when she makes an Acrobatics, Climb, Escape Artist, Fly, Ride, or Swim check to roll 1d6 and add the result to the check. She can do this after she makes the check but before the result is revealed. If the result of the d6 roll is a natural 6, she rolls another 1d6 and adds it to the check. She can continue to do this as long as she rolls natural 6s, up to a number of times equal to her Dexterity modifier (minimum 1).
Dodging Panache (Ex): At 1st level, when an opponent attempts a melee attack against the swashbuckler, the swashbuckler can as an immediate action spend 1 panache point to move 5 feet; doing so grants the swashbuckler a dodge bonus to AC equal to her Charisma modifier (minimum 0) against the triggering attack. This movement doesn’t negate the attack, which is still resolved as if the swashbuckler had not moved from the original square. This movement is not a 5-foot step; it provokes attacks of opportunity from creatures other than the one who triggered this deed. The swashbuckler can only perform this deed while wearing light or no armor, and while carrying no heavier than a light load.
Opportune Parry and Riposte (Ex): At 1st level, when an opponent makes a melee attack against the swashbuckler, she can spend 1 panache point and expend a use of an attack of opportunity to attempt to parry that attack. The swashbuckler makes an attack roll as if she were making an attack of opportunity; for each size category the attacking creature is larger than the swashbuckler, the swashbuckler takes a –2 penalty on this roll. If her result is greater than the attacking creature’s result, the creature’s attack automatically misses. The swashbuckler must declare the use of this ability after the creature’s attack is announced, but before its attack roll is made. Upon performing a successful parry and if she has at least 1 panache point, the swashbuckler can as an immediate action make an attack against the creature whose attack she parried, provided that creature is within her reach. This deed's cost cannot be reduced by any ability or effect that reduces the number of panache points a deed costs.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Swashbucklers are proficient with simple and martial weapons, as well as light armor and bucklers.

Deeds: Swashbucklers spend panache points to accomplish deeds. Most deeds grant the swashbuckler a momentary bonus or effect, but some provide longer lasting effects. Some deeds remain in effect while the swashbuckler has at least 1 panache point, but do not require expending panache to be maintained. A swashbuckler can only perform deeds of her level or lower. Unless otherwise noted, a deed can be performed multiple successive times, as long as the swashbuckler has or spends the required number of panache points to perform the deed.

Inspired Finesse (Ex): At 1st level, an inspired blade gains the benefits of Weapon Finesse with the rapier (this ability counts as having the Weapon Finesse feat for the purpose of meeting feat prerequisites) and gains Weapon Focus (rapier) as a bonus feat. This ability replaces swashbuckler finesse.

Inspired Panache (Ex): More than just a lightly armored warrior, a swashbuckler is a daring combatant. She fights with panache: a fluctuating measure of a swashbuckler’s ability to perform amazing actions in combat. At the start of each day, a swashbuckler gains a number of panache points equal to her Charisma modifier (minimum 1) and Intelligence modifier (minimum 1), instead of just her Charisma modifier. Her panache goes up or down throughout the day, but usually cannot go higher than her Charisma modifier (minimum 1) and Intelligence modifier (minimum 1) combined, though feats and magic items can affect this maximum. A swashbuckler spends panache to accomplish deeds, and regains panache in the following ways.

Unlike other swashbucklers, an inspired blade gains no panache from a killing blow. She gains panache only from scoring a critical hit with a rapier. Confirming a critical hit on a helpless or unaware creature or a creature that has fewer Hit Dice than half the swashbuckler’s character level doesn’t restore panache. This ability alters the panache class feature.

Charmed Life (Ex): At 2nd level, the swashbuckler gains a knack for getting out of trouble. Three times per day as an immediate action before attempting a saving throw, she can add her Charisma modifier to the result of the save. She must choose to do this before the roll is made. At 6th level and every 4 levels thereafter, the number of times she can do this per day increases by one (to a maximum of 7 times per day at 18th level).

Nimble (Ex): At 3rd level, a swashbuckler gains a +1 dodge bonus to AC while wearing light or no armor. Anything that causes the swashbuckler to lose her Dexterity bonus to AC also causes her to lose this dodge bonus. This bonus increases by 1 for every 4 levels beyond 3rd (to a maximum of +5 at 19th level).

Bonus Feats: At 4th level and every 4 levels thereafter, a swashbuckler gains a bonus feat in addition to those gained from normal advancement. These bonus feats must be selected from those listed as combat feats. Swashbuckler levels are considered fighter levels for the purpose of meeting combat feat prerequisites.

In addition, upon reaching 4th level and every 4 levels thereafter, a swashbuckler can choose to learn a new bonus feat in place of a bonus feat she has already learned. In effect, the swashbuckler loses the bonus feat in exchange for the new one. The old feat cannot be one that was used as a prerequisite for another feat, prestige class, or other ability. A swashbuckler can only change one feat at any given level, and must choose whether or not to swap the feat at the time she gains a new bonus feat for the level.

Rapier Training (Ex): At 5th level, an inspired blade gains a +1 bonus on attack rolls and a +2 bonus on damage rolls with rapiers. While wielding a rapier, she gains the benefit of the Improved Critical feat. These attack and damage bonuses increase by 1 for every 4 levels beyond 5th (to a maximum of +4 on attack rolls and +5 on damage rolls at 17th level). This ability replaces swashbuckler weapon training.

Rapier Weapon Mastery (Ex): At 20th level, when an inspired blade threatens a critical hit with a rapier, that critical hit is automatically confirmed. Furthermore, the critical threat range increases by 1 (this increase to the critical threat range stacks with the increases from rapier training, to a total threat range of 14-20), and the critical modifier of the weapon increases by 1 (×2 becomes ×3, for example). This ability replaces swashbuckler weapon mastery.

Aasimar (Azata-Blooded):

+2 Dexterity, +2 Charisma: Musetouched Aasimars are nimble, confident, and personable.
Native Outsider: Aasimars are outsiders with the native subtype.
Medium: Aasimars are Medium creatures and have no bonuses or penalties due to their size.
Normal Speed: Aasimars have a base speed of 30 feet.
Darkvision: Aasimars can see in the dark up to 60 feet.
Skilled: Musetouched Aasimars have a +2 racial bonus on Diplomacy and Perform checks.
Spell-Like Ability: Musetouched Aasimars can use glitterdust once per day as a spell-like ability (with a caster level equal to the aasimar’s character level).
Celestial Resistance: Aasimars have acid resistance 5, cold resistance 5, and electricity resistance 5.
Languages: Aasimars begin play speaking Common and Celestial. Aasimars with high Intelligence scores can choose from the following languages: Draconic, Dwarven, Elven, Gnome, Halfling, and Sylvan.

NPC's are acceptable. This is a very complete character, both in description as well as mechanically. Thank you for taking the time to put this together for the submission.

This is the work in progress aliase for Smiles-a-lots PC. I’ll post everything in the thread once I’m done.

He will be a human Varisian bard (of some sort). I would like to take a the trait Varisian Tattoo and want to make sure it is okay.

De nada. After the first run through, it's pretty easy to keep track of.

So that's 11 submissions so far.

Does anyone want a quick connection? I could imagine that Fortunino was supposed to meet up with someone who just happens to be another PC after his escape to Magnimar.

Generally, I don't worry about that sort of option until after the group is picked.

WAY too many combinations that simply won't happen.

Okay, I haven't heard about the other game yet, but I don't want to wait till the last minute and if I have the "problem" of being accepted into both games I should manage fine; I keep forgetting one of my other games is coming to an end.

Here is my application, Ceru. Her background reflects a proposal that she may have actually taken a job at the Inn, as she is a cook-alchemist (among other things). This is intended to be temporary, it just made sense to me as a starting point, but if it doesn't work she can arrive as an adventurer looking for work as needed.

She has a pack mule to help carry her cooking and alchemy gear, which I expect can be replaced by a handy haversack and/or whatever useful adventuring item or effect she might come across.

If there was a party rogue or other trapfinder in the party but she was also desirable as a party member for other reasons, I could probably take the Infiltrator archetype to give her some alternate abilities to avoid toe-stepping. It could work reflecting her curiosity about others and learning by mimicry. At the same time I think the archetypeless version of the class also suits her story and nature.

This is Smiles-a-lot’s submission. Dario Zaizarko a human, Varisian, Dervish Dancer Bard. I went with dervish dancer to capture his dedication to the Kapenia fighting style.

Thanks for the consideration and good gaming!

Appearance:

Dario is handsome, too handsome for his own good some would say. The Varisian is tall, lithe, but well-muscled, like a greyhound, broad in the shoulders and narrow at the waist. He carries himself with an air of confidence, the swagger of a veteran, and has a penetrating gaze.

His smoldering grey eyes are set in a well-proportioned and tanned face which is framed by long curly dark flowing hair, the color of a raven’s wing, with a luxurious mustache, a small well-groomed goatee, and thick brows the same midnight color. Dario has a greasy smile that would make a mother hide her daughters, a banker clutch his coin purse a little tighter, or cause a widow to blush.

Like most Varisians Dario dresses in practical, brightly colored, clothing with short sleeves to show his runic tattoos, an unbuttoned shirt that exposes his thick curly chest hair, and britches that highlight his calves (and other assets). He accessorizes his outfits with several scarves and jewelry, usually a bone ring, shell necklace, and large hoop earrings.

Personality:

Gambler. Witty. Arrogant. Fool. Just a few terms casually tossed around by those who are asked to describe one Dario Zaizarko

Dario is faster than he looks, more intelligent than he behaves, and he speaks more than he listens. The Varisian is charming with a silver tongue and would much rather talk his way out of a fight. He loves dancing, gambling, and is very superstitious often seeing omens and signs in every day happenings. Dario often speaks in the third person.

Background:

Dario is the only surviving, and over indulged, child of Zhan and Belka, Varisian travelers of the open road. They migrated along the Kaspakari caravan route as part of a Varisian troupe of entertainers. They were an archetypical band of scoundrels, the troupe would hold the attention of an audience while others fleeced them. So it was a win-win situation for the Varisians as they gained money from their performance and also augmented it with their petty thievery.

Over time Dario became an accomplished member of the troupe. His cousins taught him to pick a pocket with the lightest touch. While his uncles taught him how to talk the coin out of someone’s purse. And his aunts taught him the dance of the Kapenia an ancient Varisian fighting style.

Unfortunately, his family’s wanderings ended in Magnimar two years ago when Dario’s younger brother, Zario, disappeared while the troupe performed in the city. Dario’s parents refused to leave the city without their youngest son. They sold their wagon and used the coin to buy a rundown building in the Beacon’s Point District where his father ran an apothecary and acts as a fence for one of the local Sczarni thugs. While his mother ran a small fortune telling business in the back making coin off the superstitions of their neighbors.

Dario’s parents never got over the loss of their youngest son. Overtime his mother became a drunkard and drug addict in an attempt to wipe away the memory of her loss, hoping to find Zario in her dreams. While his father spent more time searching for his missing son than he did at work or home. Resulting in the family becoming more and more indebted to the Sczarni.

With his family’s troubles an no real prospects Dario sought to help his family by joining the Pathfinders.

"Well, with time closing in, you guys are not making it easy on me. I see a lot of VERY good submissions. It is going to be hard to narrow down this line up. Anyway, thank you to everyone for putting the time into these characters. It is well received and appreciated."

At the same time, I think the archetypeless version of the class also suits her story and nature.

Thank you for the submission. If selected, I’m ok with her working at the Rusty Flagon Inn as part of her back story. Because of her skills, I would see her as a cook who helps on the main floor from time to time. The character looks well thought-out, and the backstory is acceptable.

This is Smiles-a-lot’s submission. Dario Zaizarko a human, Varisian, Dervish Dancer Bard. I went with dervish dancer to capture his dedication to the Kapenia fighting style.

Thanks for the consideration and good gaming!

The bard seems well put together and has a good backstory that connects him locally. A couple questions about his history. First, did they ever find out what happened to his brother? Second, are you seeing this character as already being a member of the Pathfinder Society, or would his reason of being at the Rusty Flagon Inn be part of his attempt to connect with them?

This didn't just make me chuckle, or even laugh. I cackled. I howled. I'm still grinning. This just made my day. Thank you for submitting Ceru, DeathQuaker, if for no other reason than I got a good laugh out of that one line.

I've updated Talienda's sheet with Alina's stats and some more background on her. My thought process in building her, especially the skills, was what would a young maid with a desire to protect and help her naive charge need to do that. In the process wound up adding a bit more depth to the tutor of all characters to help explain how Alina got a couple of those skills.

Alina's crunch looks acceptable, and the added backstory brings her to life a bit more. That should help make her stand out more than a general NPC maid. She is a maid, but more importantly, a friend. If selected, we can go into more detail about her role and duties.

Righto! Here's hoping. :)

I still need to get gear, but I can wait on that since it's not going to be a lot of adventuring stuff.

No.

He is looking to connect with them and isn’t a member yet. Last sentence has been changed in his profile to make it clearer: With his family’s troubles and no real prospects Dario sought to help his family by going to the Rusty Flagon and trying to join these Pathfinders he has heard so much about.

You could always just send the maid to do the shoping.

Thank you for the reply. Overall, Dario is a solid submission.

Lack of sleep may have been a factor as well.

And yes, this is where you put such comments. :P

”Luck? Bah, Dario Zaizarko makes his own luck!”

Nevertheless, good luck all. Fingers crossed and good gaming!.

"Really? So do I! Small batch and artisanal! <sparks fly>

"And my drawback is pride, what's yours?"

Morrolan continues to sip his ale, watching the sparks fly between Dario and Bryndís. He gently shakes his head and mutters "Young punks..."

The handsome bartender smiles to himself and wipes some glasses dry, as the bard and the bloodrager begin their courtship.

Good luck with the game! I couldn't put a character that made me all excited to play him or her, so I won't be submitting one :)

And now, The WAIT.

Recruitment is now closed.

OK, I have read through the characters more than a few times. Each of them is amazingly distinguished. Selection was difficult, to say the least. I hope that every one of these characters, at some point, finds a game. That said, I can only select (6). So, without any further delay, I would like to invite the following players / characters to join me in the discussion thread.

hustonj - Ionatan Deverin Aasimar(Musetouched) Swashbuckler(Inspired Blade)
rdknight - Bryndis Raelyosradinsdottir Half-Elf Bloodrager
TheWaskally - Wayilant Arden Male Aasimar Cleric of Cayden Cailean
AdamWarnock - Talienda Blackhorn Female Aasimar Sorceress (Cross blooded)
Smiles-a-lot - Dario Zairko Male Human (Varisian) Bard(Dervish Dancer)
DeathQuaker - Ceru CG Gnome Investigator

Again, thank you to everyone who applied. It was an absolute pleasure to review your characters.

Thanks for the opportunity to apply, and congrats to the assembled team! Have fun!

Thank you for consideration. Happy gaming!

O well, another time, thank you for the opportunity.

Have a fun game folks.
