Discussion for the Troubles in Otari AP

Scarab Sages

Thanks for taking over GM!

Ok so far I heard from 4 players, we are still missing Mitch and Mr. Tee.

I scavenged the slides (copied the presentations) and linked them above, the same with macros.

I read enough of AP to get started, I will continue as we go.

So we have the full set of players. Did you agree on how to track loot?

From experience i know that in AP it is better to do this at the beginning ;)

I don't think there was any agreement about tracking loot.

Bonnie will volunteer to hold it, though. Especially any bottles of alcohol we come across.

In the Abomination Vaults AP I'm in, we have a separate Google spreadsheet that we keep updated with all the loot we collect.

Ok, added a loot sheet. I will not go into how you divide the gold, it is up to you to pool budget or split the money equally.

Thanks for doing that.

I've tweaked the columns a little to provide a some more detail. I added a column for each PC that can be used to show who is currently in possession of the item(s) (and whether they are Stowed, Worn, Held, etc.). If we decide to leave the item in place until we return to Otari, then the Left Behind column will include a count (usually 1). That way there's no ambiguity about who is holding what.

At some point, we'll head back to Otari to cash in the loot we don't need and buy some equipment that we do need. We can decide at that time whether we split things evenly and everyone buys what they want with their share, or if we're a little more strategic and equip the different PCs efficiently to maximize survivability. I tend to lean to efficiency, but we don't have to decide right now.

The oozes I've run into in the past have universally had immunity to critical hits, so no doubling of the damage. I had trouble finding a rule that talked about the Deadly damage aspect of a crit and whether the creatures are immune to that as well. I suspect they are, but I posted the question on the Rules channel of the Org Play Online discord server to see what the experts think.

It turns out that the though the answer isn't totally clear, most GMs and at least one game Dev believe that the immunity to critical damage only applies to the doubling of the base damage. All other effects on damage from the critical hit (such as Mary's Deadly d10) still apply.

Hmm the above is not what I would expect. Good to know, thanks Palandri.

@All - I roughly post once a day, so if you have uncertainty about your PC what they see and such, feel free to make guesses and if your actions:

> If I can't see them from where I am I do y.

I may respond the same day or may not.

And if you are summoning a creature, could you find an avatar and put it on a map and provide a link to that creature. It simplifies my life

Mary is trained in Medicine +6 with Healer's Tools and the Battle Medicine feat. Albrecht appears to be a Forensic Medicine Investigator trained in Medicine +8 with Healer's Tools and the suped-up (1-hour, +level HP) version of Battle Medicine. Flory has trained Medicine +5 with Healer's Tools; she can also cast the Stabilize cantrip and has one Heal spell slotted.

With three members of the group having Healer's Tools and able to Treat Wounds, we should be able to recover after an encounter pretty quickly. If time is not of the essence, then might I suggest that we hand-wave the process of recovery? It will help speed things up by omitting the otherwise boring mechanical process of repeated rolling and associated time-management.

Those of us with Battle Medicine will need to keep track of who we've used it on during a particular day, or in the case of Albrecht, a particular hour.

Since this is the first fight with me as a GM I asked for this, especially since the healing might take you into the night. If the healing sounds reasonable I will not push you through that.

However, I do have an orc with risky surgery and I like describing new scars that he makes on his body. So it could be an RP element, so I am probing the team.

To add: Albrecht has Continual Recovery, which means he can Treat Wounds every 10 min.

We should set up an explicit agreement, like "Albrecht always works on the most damaged first" or "Albrecht always works on the character with the fewest HP first" or "Albrecht always does a combo Battle Medicine / Treat Wounds first, then Mary/Flory take over" and if our healing gets cuts short, there isn't ambiguity about who got treated first.

I'm all in favor of handwaving out of combat healing as much as possible.

I've been running into this problem with one of my other characters, and have started putting this information into their tagline so I can remember who I've used Battle Medicine on!

Treat Wounds on an individual takes 10 minutes and can be repeated 50 minutes later. Assuming we stick to DC 15 rolls for 2d8 hp (+2 in the case of Albrecht) of healing, then recovering Mylos' 8hp and Arity's 9hp of damage should on average take no more than about 70 minutes, with about a 40% chance of getting it done in the first 10 minutes.

Let's see what an example first round of healing would look like with Albrecht and Mary working on Mylos and Arity:

Albrecht Medicine (Treat Wounds) on Mylos vs DC 15: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Albrecht Medicine (Treat Wounds) on Mylos HP recovered: 2d8 + 2 ⇒ (7, 8) + 2 = 17

Mary Medicine (Treat Wounds) on Arity vs DC 15: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Mary Medicine (Treat Wounds) on Arity HP recovered: 2d8 ⇒ (7, 3) = 10

Got lucky and took care of business in 10 minutes. Let's try it again for comparison

Albrecht Medicine (Treat Wounds) on Mylos vs DC 15: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
Albrecht Medicine (Treat Wounds) on Mylos HP recovered: 2d8 + 2 ⇒ (4, 1) + 2 = 7

Mary Medicine (Treat Wounds) on Arity vs DC 15: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Mary Medicine (Treat Wounds) on Arity HP recovered: 2d8 ⇒ (6, 7) = 13

Still lucky with the rolls, but Mylos ended up short an hp. A night's sleep will get it back, so probably not worth spending another 60 minutes just for that. Maybe some quick Battle Medicine is worth it since the clock resets on everything come our morning preparations.

Bonnie just ninja'd me and mentioned that Albrecht has Continual Recovery, which means his Treat Wounds require a 10 minute wait instead of the usual 50 minutes. It might be best then if he does all the healing as he can get three rounds of Treat Wounds every hour to Mary and Flory's one. Even if he has to treat multiple patients in series, he's still quite likely to get the job done within an hour.

Anyway, I think you can see where this sort of rolling and record keeping stops being fun if we do it after every encounter (at least for me) which is why I suggested skipping it if we have at least a full hour to rest before the next encounter.

If the PCs want to RP getting their wounds, the healing and the resulting scars, I say go for it. That's what I do all the time; the more gruesome the wounds the better as far as I'm concerned. My other rogue just got critted from full hp to Dying two with a single tentacle swipe. I described it as hitting her in the side of the head, crushing her skull and almost decapitating her. Reversing this process once someone casts a Heal on her will be even more fun. She's a Tengu, so her bones tend to be a little more brittle than most.

Bonnie is no ninja but she did once stab someone with a wakizashi so that counts, right?

Okay, that 'someone' was herself, when she was playing Five Finger Filet while drunk.

Still, ninja.

Neat PC you have there.

I'm still kicking myself a little for not trying to join GM Pudding's Night of the Gray Death AP, but I was not in a good place to do so when he opened recruiting, so I skipped it. I'm hoping someone else will offer to GM it on a Paizo PbP forum in the future.

So far I've only created and played a Level 11 PC in Fists of the Ruby Phoenix, but had to drop out not long after it started when a conflict arose between the GM and another player. An unfortunate situation really, but at least I got a taste of high-level play and I think creating and playing a Level 17 PC would be a pretty great experience.

I still hope to play the Night of the Gray death AP, one day. I think at the time of that recruitment I got into another AP so I decided to skip that one.

If everyone takes one 90 minute watch to keep an eye on both shacks, then we can all get our 8 hours by spending a total of slightly less than 10 hours. The shacks are 10 foot square and only 5 feet apart with the doors on the same side. I think one person can keep an eye on such a small area by themselves.

I checked the Resting rules and it turns out there is a convenient little table that pretty much matches my top-of-the head calculation above. For a party of 6, with everyone doing one 96 minute watch, we can all rest 8 hours by spending a total of 9 hours and 36 minutes.

Sorry folks, yesterday got a busy day and didn't get to updating this table.

I hope it will get better from here.

Next week on Thursday (the last day of June) I will be traveling, so I could also not be able to provide an update.

The attack came after around 5 h (during 4th watch) of resting if it matters to anyone ;)

Now at least we have a better idea of how fast these crocs are. Blue moved 12 squares and Red moved 9 squares and both appeared to use all their actions. That suggests a 20 foot movement speed (though I suppose they could be slow-footing it to trick us). This tells me that an attack and run tactic might be the best approach against these guys.

If we spend our last action moving 25 feet away from them (35 in Mary's case), we can use the first 2 actions for attacks. In response, they will need to use at least 2 actions to catch up to us, which leaves them only one action to attack. If instead we spend 2 actions moving and 1 attacking, then (depending on how they're positioned) we might be able to avoid being attacked at all. Eventually we'll wear them down at minimal risk to ourselves. Fingers crossed that they don't have any AoO or Reach or things could get nasty.

Ok, folks, tomorrow is my travel day, I will not provide an update.

The fight is over, so feel free to RP the rest of the night and a decision on what you do in the morning.

Ok, folks, I was wondering how to handle this room, as it is a dead-end.

In theory, I think I should assume that each one of you enters, and do what exploration activity you have selected.

But I want this to be more interactive than that. I will stick to exploration activities for walking down the hallways etc.

I am not sold on that so we will see how it goes ;)

Rather than trying to Escape, Bonnie is going to cast dimensional assault to try to teleport out.

Just giving you a heads up so you can think about how you want to rule it - she doesn't teleport, she teleports and Escapes, she teleports but doesn't Escape, or something else.

Any ruling is fine with me, as long as it's not overly punitive. :)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

My understanding and interpretation is as follow: when teleporting you escape all grapple and grapple-like conditions.

So I am fine with you doing dimensional assault => escaping the web holding you. Usually when being grappled it makes casting spell harder (DC5 flat check) but your spell is verbal only ;)). On top of that the web shot is only preventing you from moving, just like arrow critical hit.

So All good!

Mary didn't know that color changes could indicate that those are not normal spiders. In fact what they came here to face was Lamashut herself! With a move of her spidery leg Mary's head deformed and a third eye have opened to properly recognize colors.

On the topic of cover I think the answer is yes, you get soft cover from folks on the line of effect, but corners would give standard cover. And then you can take action Take cover to get greater cover.

Yeah, I considered having Bonnie flank with Mary, but decided that she would do better flanking with Albrecht to beat up on the healthier green spider than helping Mary with the half-dead red one. I figured that Mary could deal with her spider on her own, but it turned out to be a closer call than I'd thought. Assuming that all these spiders are the same, I think that last strike by Mary took out the red spider. Come level 4, I may well get Mary the Tumble Behind feat; I need to find her a better way to flat-foot opponents in situations where flanking isn't possible.

Ok folks, we are slowly coming to the end of chapter 1. I am not sure if this was discussed, ok I know it was not discussed with me :D But we will follow here a milestone leveling. Meaning I will not track XP per creature/encounter/skill check but will announce where do you level up.

This adventure states that at the end of Chapter 1 you should be lvl 3, so we will soon be leveling up. There is one more room to explore, and this is when we will be done with this chapter.

Another level up will happen after next chapter, and then we will level to lvl 5 somewhere in the middle of the last chapter.

I will expect from you to write down here, what is your progression (selected feats, gained abilities etc.)

=========================

On a similar note, next week (starting on 14th of August) I will be off, hiking. I will have phone with me and access to internet, but not enough to set up encounters etc. We could get this chapter done by then, and then we will take a pause and restart at 22nd of August.

Note: Bonnie would also like a +1 weapon; I don't know if we have enough money, but if we can spare 70 gp, all three of us could have a +1 weapon. If not (or if we don't want to spend all of our money on +1 runes, which is also understandable), we should have some kind of roll-off.

I am fine with whatever ;) Meaning I want to see it before you play as lvl 3, just to be aware of the changes.

With regards to money, you have a loot sheet, at the end of the chapter you will go to Otari, so buying weapons is possible. You may need to decide which of the items you sell vs keep. I will review the chapter if we haven't missed something. But you may not have 70 gp to spare just yet

You aren’t flat-footed to hidden, undetected, or flanking creatures of your level or lower, or creatures of your level or lower using surprise attack. However, they can still help their allies flank.
