Part One: The Dreaming Domes of the Aboleth Psilords

Trouble is fomenting in the prosperous Blood Sea city state of Malvent; the half-elven cerebremancer Ezria Santhrasslisan the Insightful, apprentice and confidant to the archmage Mordenkainen the Magnificent has vanished, and the vaunted head of the Circle of Eight is in need of aid to locate his protege; at the same time, foul rumors of fester regarding a series of caravans that have vanished on the road between Malvent and Phloon over the past several months. Has a new force of evil begun to accost the trade in this benighted region on the northern shores of the Sea of Blood? Heroes are sorely needed.

For simplicity sake, here's the relevant bits:

Faefolk
My idea for the faefolk is that they are, for the most part, very humanoid-like fey. They're typically more capricious than most humans or elves but otherwise act more like those races than like many of their fey kin. They look a lot like half-elves (with pointed ears and angular features, but not to the extent of full-elves) but their hair and eye colors vary a lot more (with eye colors including blue, green, amber, and purple, and hair ranging the full spectrum from red to violet, plus white and black). Their society is sharply split between commoners and nobility, the latter of which possess powers well beyond their kin.

Faefolk Nobles
The most obvious distinguishing characteristic of noble faefolk is that they possess wings. The appearance of their wings vary greatly and include feathered (sometimes in brightly colored plumage), bat-like, translucent insectoid, and butterfly or moth-like. Within related clans all nobles have the same type of wings (though the markings vary) and marriages are usually always within the same clan (or set of related clans); in mixed marriages, each child will take after one parent and associate with their clan. Faefolk nobles are organized into houses which are not dictated by their family or clan but by what special power they possess. Faefolk scholars debate whether nobles are born into specific houses or if they unconsciously select their gift (and therefore house) before it manifests; in either case, it is agreed that dividing clans into separate houses and composing houses of members of many different clans is a vital safeguard against any one clan or house gaining too much power and influence.

Faefolk City
Glenhaven, as its name is rendered in the common tongue, is a large city on the outskirts of the Feywilds, in the Heartlands. Also known to nearby humans and halflings as Faeholm or the Emerald Citadel, it is the center of culture and commerce for the Faefolk, a race of very...

Looks fine except, as I mentioned, let's call it something other than Feywild because of the potential for confusion.

Thank you! I just copied and pasted the fluff text from the previous posts, that’s why it still said “Feywild”. I’ll try to think of another name (though, I’m open to suggestions); sticking with the darker, sort of Brothers Grimm vibe, maybe something like the Shadowdale? Oh, or maybe Grimwood Forest?

Posting a written out concept of the Stoneblessed Template below. Is is intended as a 31 RP racial 'upgrade' of sorts that you gain in addition to your base 10 RP race.

Stoneblessed Concept wrote:

"Requires: Orc, Human, Elf, or Dwarf.

-Divine paragon: The godly power of the Sovereign Stone irons out any imperfections in your nature. You gain a +2 bonus in two ability scores of your choice. These must match your race’s original ability modifiers if possible. These replace your original races ability score modifiers; any racial penalties to an ability score are removed. (=Flexible racial template, 2 RP)

-Awakened talent: You gain one alternate race trait to your original race with a maximum racial point cost of 3 as a bonus racial trait. (3 RP)

-Gift of Tamaros: Originally an artefact granted to the humans, heavy exposure to the Stone infuses you with the same gifts granted to them. You gain a +2 racial bonus in two other ability scores. In addition, you gain the human’s skilled and bonus feat racial abilities. If you are already a human, you instead gain two more ability score boots in the final two ability scores. (18 RP)

-Altered nature: You now count as both a human, your original race, and a hybrid between the two. With your GM’s discretion, if your original race was human, you might now qualify and detect as a setting-specific more advanced human subtype (such as pureblood Azlanti).

-Divine prescence: Most intelligent beings recognize that there is something... 'more' to you, and are more inclined to listen to your requests. You gain a +2 racial bonus to diplomacy and intimidate. (4 rp).

-Wellspring of energy: Lingering divine energies heal your wounds at a faster rate than is normal for your kin. You gain fast healing 1. If you already have fast healing from your original race, it instead increases by 1. (6 rp)."

Any feedback for lore or whether it is too strong or weak? I'm considering using the advanced template instead since that is what most other custom races seem to be doing; unsure if that would make it too powerful.

Here's a rules question for you, @Monkeygod: Do animal companions get automatic bonus progression? If not, can we buy magic items that increase the associated stats and bonuses, or are they just out of luck? It's my understanding that in ABP settings things like a belt of giant strength just don't exist. (Granted, I don't feel like animal companions are suffering that much as things stand, since they are also familiars and that means they share their masters' BAB and saves.)

Here is PaleDim's (Rokan's) submission for this. He still needs a little work, but he's a "Mantis enthusiast" who's not actually a Red Mantis Assassin, but differently capable in his own way. He's a shrewd barrister, and missionary of Achaekek.

Eh...

For fairness's sake... What shall I do?

Pick up Dazing spell? Leave the can of worms closed?

Hey Seb, what are some cities in the world at large that might be a good place for our group to set up a Thaythilorian enclave?? If you could provide a few options for us to consider, that would be awesome.

Also, do you have a version of Rahadoum ? And if so, does it play any role in the history of the Red Mantis Assassins/Thaythilor like it does in Golarion proper? If not, no big deal, just wanting to know for backstory/plot ideas.

That was mostly for you, Monkeygod.

I don't have any direct corollary for Rahadoum planned.

There's enclaves all over the place like China-towns in the real world. There's one in the city we're starting in -- Malvent, which is a Blood Sea city state that combines Melvaunt, Calaunt, and Saerloon. And also, that's where you should put it, I'm not planning on a lot of moving parts to start this off. There's basically just going to be a quest giver for the good and evil party (Elminster/Mordenkainen or the Father of Obedience) who tells you what's up and sets you off to investigate.

Heh, yeah, I figured. Wanted to ask my questions separately then went and grabbed dinner. Will be answering now:

1) What about Dazing spell concerns you? I know dazed is a strong condition, but it does allow a save to negate, and I would assume SR still applies?

2) Companions/familiars get ABP as well. If it gets multiple natural attacks beyond 2, reduce the bonus to attacks accordingly.

3) I am unsure how much it would cost to add a feat to an item. Let me ask around.

4) Regarding bench-pressing. Currently, my saves are +18, +16, +17, which puts me in the green for about 15.

My AC is 19, but that doesn't include my armor atm. However, I'm not sure I can hit the 29 that is the orange/low tier for level 15.

As I said before, my Time Bandits game PCs are level 11 tristalt, with similar wacky creation rules. Most of them came in around the proper bench-pressing numbers.

All that said, I'm not sure that raising the bar, so to speak, is the best solution.

I **think** those numbers are the max you should have at that level if your PC is focused on that stat.

Thus, if you're a super focused tank build, your AC should be around that 38, but your to hit probably won't be a +28.

With that in mind, perhaps people need to adjust? Aneil is an assassin so her attack bonus will likely be close to that +28, but as I said, her saves and AC not so much.

Cool. I'll look for ways to tune my numbers down. I'm sure I can! (Just wanted to see if we were going to tune down or

BTW, re adding a feat, maybe training is a good reference point?

Hmm, re: bench press comparison, I'm slightly above blue in attack, 5 over blue in AC, but interestingly below the orange line in saves.

Monkeygod wrote:

Thanks!

Monkeygod wrote:
3) I am unsure how much it would cost to add a feat to an item. Let me ask around.

There's always the Training weapon quality, if the feat is a combat feat. If it isn't, that could provide a baseline for the cost, maybe putting it in armor instead? Weapon qualities are a lot more painful with ABP, because they lower the bonus, so it is kind of an interesting exchange to have to make.

@Monkey Thanks for answering most of the questions. I am running to the issue of the saves though; divine grace adds +10 or +11 to all of them at these levels of wealth. Is that acceptable? There's no way to stay below the blue saves unless i intentionally tank his primary stat.

@Seb I added a first draft for the backstory taking place around Krynn's ascension. Tried to stay as true to the Tromek as possible. I'm not familiar with some of the named settings and as such I paraphrased some as 'Desert Folk' so that rheir role can be filled in however. I'll work on recent events, the remaining base stats and appearance/personality somewhere today and that should complete the submission.

@Krynn, I went to look over your stats, but most of the crucial info(AC, Saves, attack bonus, etc) is missing atm.

Once you get that info added in, I can take a look at your final numbers, and see how far you surpass the bench-press numbers.

Also, due to ABP, you shouldn't be increasing your saves/Cha with items. I assume your comment about 'levels of wealth' means the level of ABP, but just wanted to make sure.

How would potential players feel about eventually joining a discord sever once selections are finalized?

It will allow us a much easier flow of discussion, more readied access to myself(especially, cuz I'm almost always at my laptop and thus discord) and Seb for any questions which will eventually arise, and I can create specific channel for each party that the other group(save for myself) can't see.

Ah, that is true. Sorry. I still have to add the calculations. However, at level 15, base saves for a paladin are +9/+5/+9.

With rolled stats 12 18 16 12 12 18, we add racials to con, dex and cha, then use the two mythic boosts on one dex and one cha, buying a +1 tome and using the three level up ability points in dex and cha. We use either inherent bonuses or a bought headband to get dex and cha a +6 enhancement. That's 30 dex and 30 cha. Abp bonus gets con to 22 and wis to 14.

The inherent bonus for resistance is +4. Divine grace adds +10 to all saves. Added to base saves, inherent bonuses and logical attribute spread gives, at minimum, +29 fort, +29 reflex, + 25 will.

This is without adding things like stone of good luck, buying a +5 cloak, spending feats or cheesy optimization.

Paladins generally always have higher saves than other classes in the party because of that ability. That is what they do. I don't think the class should necessarily be restricted based on it. As long as you aren't optimizing or aren't too astronomically higher, it shouldn't be a problem. Some members of a party are generally stronger at certain things than others. That's normal, especially with paladins.

Also, Automatic Bonus Progression at lvl 15 gives a resistance +5, not +4. Aside from that, you couldn't buy a Cloak of Resistance if you wanted in this ABP system. A luckstone, yes, cloak no. You could also save money on buying the tome and get some better items that improve your build all the more than the money spent on the bonus.

Monkeygod wrote:

I'm for it.

I've been coughing my lungs out and loopy on cough medicine the last few days (its not Covid, I got tested). I probably won't have time to finish anything for this. Have fun, whoever gets picked.

I can't imagine trying to make this character while loopy on cough medicine. Eugh...
Hope you get feeling better soon!

I believe we've already extended the deadline, and unless Seb is opposed to it, we can do so again. Especially considering your faefolk was one of the PCs I was looking forward to seeing completed.

Please, take your time, and get better.

This is from the ABP:

Items that only grant bonuses to AC, saving throws, and ability scores don’t exist in this variant, and wish and similar spells never grant inherent bonuses to ability scores.

Tomes for stats don't exist. Nor do belts or headbands for Dex/Cha.

I like Discord, so works for me.

How about we just go ahead and extend it to next tuesday? Everyone okay with that?

Discord is awesome with me. I find it really helps to keep the game going when checking in is easy and not very stressful. Plus it makes the players feel like more of a community, though the amount of OOC table talk does increase dramatically. :) Still, I think that's a good thing on the whole, since it makes everyone feel more like friends playing a game together.

Extending the deadline is likewise okay with me. I will try to take some time to write more background this week.

You know I'm good with getting a new discord server/channel. And no worries on the deadline either. Aside from a few minor tweaks as I look over the character on a daily basis, he's ready.

Same, best wishes from me too.

I'd like a time extension as well, if possible. I'd probably be able to finish it sometime tomorrow with the remaining stats and character fluff, but it'd be less stressful to be able to do this over a few nights instead of one.

A discord server sounds like a good idea to me. I already use it for some of the other PBP's I'm in and it makes discussing things generally a lot easier and faster.

Thanks for answering the question on the stats and the belt/headband availability, Monkey and Smooshie. I've been in two games with ABP before and both allowed the buying of such items if they were wanted, but that apparently wasn't standard for the format. Guess I was mislead :)

@Monkey to finish, have you considered what the gold cost is of adding feats to create custom magic items? After removing the costs for the previous stat items I had some gold left, and used part of it to add some basic feats and metamagic feats to corresponding items. Things like toughness and extend spell. I worked with an estimated 8 k gold cost for a feat without prequisites but I'll adjust based on what you want.

Can we get a sense of who's going to make a submission and as what? (can someone make a table?).

I'm considering (I can't promise right now) making up a similar game for the rest of the characters if there's a whole bunch of people left over so more people can play. It will depend if I can come up with another good idea for a campaign -- probably a similar artifact hunt, and if I feel like I have time and a party that would gel together. It would be in the same setting.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I keep thinking I should do a table of submissions for you, yeah. I'll do that now!

Okay, that looks like 21 -- with it not being clear everyone's going to make a character.

If we do 3 tables of 6-7 (assuming not everyone's going to finish), I think that might be doable if we do the Rod of 7 parts concept as one table with two of the groups, and the rest will do a separate concept. I think the current set up is the absolute maximum roster I can imagine being able to accommodate completely at some table, so if the number goes up over the next week or so, then I can't hold out the promise everyone can play.

My other current idea for a table is that the sorcerer-kings of Dark Sun have opened a portal to the western lands and are invading, and the resolution involves finding the hearts of the drakes -- especially the earth heart which can cancel defiling magic.

There's 13 concepts/full characters posted, with Giant Halfling's faefolk making it 14.

Two tables of 7 isn't bad, assuming that's around where we stay.

@Seb: If there's a place/culture similar to Celts (historical, arthurical or from Slaine setting), where is it and what's it called?

I'm sorry if this has been asked before.

Backstory draft for Jaezred Nasadra, drow noble Oracle/Slayer. Character sheet to come.

backstory:

The drow baby screamed as it took its first breath. A single gasp could barely be heard beneath it. How could this be? They had been given assurances by the seers that this child would be a powerful addition to the Nasadra line and instead they got this... pale... thing? Perhaps they had been lied to. Or a curse sent on them from their rivals to stop their eventual return to power. There was surely no level their enemies wouldn't stoop. No, it had been a true vision, confirmed by multiple witnesses. This child meant to be theirs, no matter who tried to sabotage it. Appearance could be altered after all. He would have to be kept hidden for a while, trained as a wizard if he would have any chance at being useful. A dagger quickly slit the midwife's throat. A small shame that it was their most trusted midwife.

"Focus Jaezred! Do you wish more pain? The spell will destroy you if you cannot control it!" Jaezred focused, he focused harder than anyone had ever focused, but he could not seem to get the spell right or make any progress towards mastering wizardry. He was put under more pressure than any of the other students. No special treatment. Given the hardest work. No rest. None of it worked. He was a failure. The spell destabilised and the energy burned him again. He screamed. Laughter mocked him for his failure, his peers sneered and all he wanted to do was hide.He could not do that though, or he would be punished even more for being a coward. Sometimes he thought he could even hear voices in the shadows laughing at him. Sometimes the voices seemed to be talking to him. I'm not crazy, he would tell himself as he tried to ignore them. He pushed them away and refused to listen.

Alone one night as her stared into a mirror, examining the features of his pale, softer elven face, devoid of the usual ash and makeup he was forced to use to hide it from the other drow, he finally broke. He was sure a shadow was moving directly behind him but when he whirled around everything was normal. He shouted at the darkness in the corners, dared it to take him. This was the first time he had acknowledged that something was there and the first time he finally listened. He didn't care anymore if he was crazy because now he had something that understood his struggle. He no longer tried so hard in the direction of study that his family wanted him to follow, instead learning all he could of the shadow realm and its magic. He learnt to use the darkness and the shadows to do almost any spell that he had been unable to complete before. He caught up to his peers and earned his place finally. Now others looked up to and feared him and his strange magic. His power grew, and so did his threat to others in power and he was forced to learn to maneuver and scheme to survive. He became very dangerous, those who crossed him did not last long. It was not long before those truly powerful saw him, not merely the students and peers of his acquaintance.

The family saw his strength and growing abilities and saw him as becoming unguidable and uncontrollable. They could not take the chance that he might ruin their careful plans. After many years of grooming, it was decided to send their best tool away, to fend for itself in the hopes that it came crawling back, begging to return to their favour. Jaezred did not need their favour. Everything the darkness gave him was enough and in his exile he flourished. In dedication to Vhaeraun, who he believed to be his patron, he returned home in secret and murdered 7 of the families priestesses in their temple. He was not detected or caught and was rewarded with an even greater increase to his powers. With this recent message he has left the underdark to temporarily hide on the surface and bide his time for the next move. His odd birth defect came in handy, no one unfamiliar with his race would ever assume his true identity.

"Sometimes a curse is a blessing."

Also, Monkeygod, I'm gonna capitalize from your prework, and with your permission I'm gonna use your custom race, assuming your culture and mine both descend from a common, previous civilization which expanded their genes.

If that's fine for you.

Maybe I'll change the skill bonuses (even though I like them how they are) to represent the differences in culture development through ages of disconnection.

As for now, this will be Jereru's alias for the character: Myrwyn

Thanks for the list, Eric.

I Had a bit of bad luck yesterday; somehow i lost a large part of the profile in an update. But i fortunately had a backup and it's mostly restored now.

Now that all choices and stuff are done i'll move on to the stats and the remaining fluff and world building.

Oh, you can remove me from the list.

Alright, thanks for the extra time! I'm not back to 100% yet but that brain-fog you get when you're sick has mostly cleared and I'm getting caught back up on my games, then I'll get back to work on my character for this.

I don't have a name/alias yet but I'm looking at probably doing a noble faefolk swashbuckler/inquisitor who serves one of the eldest (leaning towards Ng whose portfolio includes secrets and wanderers, but not certain yet). I'm sure his numbers won't be as impressive as many of the other builds but I like the theme.

Hmm... there are several other inquisitors already though... do I dare start switching around classes now? Probably not, but if I do I'll try to give a heads up right away.

Honestly, I have to get through a nursing exam on Monday, so I'll be to busy the end of this week to get started anyway, so it's fine with me too.

I might try to start putting the campaign page together -- maps, etc.

Status, basically finished, will likely revise skills, spells and equipment depending on party members. While I could do more stuff, the character has enough moving parts and is definitly powerfull enough.

Lily is an Urban Skald, and thus can play with spellcasters, Hybrids etc.
This does give these characters access to Barbarian Rage powers. Pounce (animal totem) being the most notable of these. Spirit totem probably being the most fun and characterful one.

She is a skill monkey, capable of doing buffs, dealing tons of damage, and being fairly hard to lock down. She is not however, particularly tough or all that happy to be in melee, although she has the full snap shot tree and can just keep firing from and into it.

Morality wise/personality-wise, she is characterized by being incredibly talkative, and her relationship with objectively observable reality is characterized by a great degree of opportunism on her part, met by a lot of frustrated face palming on the part of objectively observable reality.

Updated stats for Krynn, removed all elements I thought were not fully in concept and ended up retraining a bunch of feats to more swordfighting abilities in the Spheres of Might system. Also added the base stats with their calculations. He's virtually complete now.

Since I ran into the character limit on the site (due to me wanting to copy the text of all Path of War and Spheres of Might stuff into the profile for GM convenience), I left the normal statblock layout out for now in favor of one that has the underlying calculations. If Krynn is selected I'll rework that.

I'll add the remaining world building fluff and appearance tomorrow in a seperate post as I won't be able to add them to the profile due to the above mentioned site limit :(

Good luck on the selection, everyone!

If the text to copy ends up being too long, I suggest using links. The GM might not be able to read at first sight, but he'll be just a click away. The d20pfsrd and the Spheres of Power wiki are quite link friendly - the AoN not as much, but still.

Yeah, that's a good suggestion, thanks. Might be a tad late this far in the process though, and easier to just link to a post that has the missing extra background fluff in two spoiler blocks. Those might only have to be read once while the abilities might have to be checked more often, too.

Buying items and revising numbers - I need to tone down some things (45 AC might be a bit too much for a spellcaster, I guess)

Mine is 41, pretty bad flatfooted though and I am not a full caster.

Decided to stick to the requested blue ac numbers, technically as a tank. But eh, Krynn has heals :) he can take a beating and live! (Famous last words...)
