We got some time before my books arrive and I get a chance to read through them. Estimating at least a week - but who knows these days! In the meantime, let's gather here, finalize our 11th-level (!) characters, and put our Team Concept together.

I am assuming none of the above should come as a surprise. That said, in order to assist with me running for five high-level characters in a way that progresses the action forward at a good pace, I am essentially asking for special attention to be paid to the formatting of posts that are especially "crunchy" (Encounter Mode, etc). As for me, I do not work from home, and will spend most weekdays 8am-5pm (PDT) unable to access this PbP, in terms of timing of GM posts.

Some of you asked about Uncommon and Rare options. I'll ask you to limit yourself to a small number of these types of selections, ideally something that really defines your concept or build, but in general, as this system is rather well-balanced, I'm not overly worried about any elements contained within it at this time.

I've got 3 Uncommon picks in my build.

Essential: Ganzi heritage. Since you selected my character, I'm going to assume this is fine. :)

Really nice to have: ring of wizardry (type i) As a magus, I have very limited spell slots, so having a couple extra level 1 slots is really handy.

Just fun to have: the crushing rune. On a critical hit, an enemy I hit with a crushing weapon is clumsy 1 and enfeebled 1 until the end of my next turn. I picked this one up because it was cheap and looked fun, but it won't break my heart to lose it.

Here's how I see Aiobhean working in the party: Frontline striker, crowd control, and backup healing. I can hit people, really hard, and my reach can be anywhere from 5 to 40 feet. If I'm not hitting someone, I am grabbing them, tripping them, etc. I'm using a two-handed weapon, but my hybrid study lets me change my grip as a free action, so I can be really flexible, and can even heal people a bit with Battle Medicine (and in a couple levels I'll have a once a day breath of life).

What I won't be great at, unfortunately, is utility spells. I just don't have enough slots to spare.

The only Rare option I chose was my Strix ancestry. Important to the character as I want her to be able to fly and swim without trouble. She's here to master both environments.

Rare Options: Cirri is a Strix. Important for the character. Will have to withdraw from the game if this isn't allowed.

Uncommon Options: Thieves' Tools, Concealable give a +1 bonus to Stealth checks to hide them. I can replace them with infiltrator thieves' tools instead.

Stuff the DM will have to adjudicate:
Transformation and what abilities I can use: Animal Form. Dragon Form. Fey Form. I plan to use these spells liberally. I'll lose access to some of my feats since my new feats won't have wings (I can't fly if I'm an Ape, for example) but other abilities I'll probably have to ask for. Can I make an Impressive Performance if I'm transformed into a deer? I'm just throwing this point in advance.

Terrain Expertise: Cirri gets a +1 circumstance bonus to Survival checks when in aquatic environments. Do beaches and coastlines count as aquatic? How about ship combat?

I have about 1700 gp left.
My armor is only +1, so maybe I should upgrade to a +2. Then again, I do expect to shapeshift in combat and so my AC becomes irrelevant at that point. High level play throws all of my benchmarks out the window.

An easy one would be a +2 striking handwraps of mighty blows. If your own unarmed attack bonus is higher than the forms, you can then apply its item bonus.

How are we for healing? Yagon is a dhampir (his only uncommon option) and can use his harmful font to cure himself, but doesn't have much he can do for the rest of you.

As for Billy, as mentioned in Recruitment, he thinks very highly of himself and his abilities. He's in love with Hao Jin, so he has extra incentive to put on a good performance in this tourney. He's confident that you're all in good hands! His only Uncommon option is his Aphorite heritage. Really wanted him to be a Hao Jin fan-boy, and since Hao Jin has spent hundreds of years on Axis, I wanted to work that in.

Yagon asked about Healing. Billy has the Medic dedication, along with Greater Healer's Gloves (and Risky Surgery for auto-crits). See below for details on his healing.

Inspire Courage w/ Lingering Composition:
I have his init high-ish (+24), so he can hopefully get that going early in Rd 1. (prepare yourselves for some cheesy rhymes).

On a side note, it's disappointing that Inspire Heroics to get +2 cannot be Lingered (iirc, you basically need to choose between the two). Seems to border on useless given limited focus points. Unless I'm missing something.

Healing:

Rather than pay for the +2 armor, you might want to add Resilient for a +1 to all saves (cost: 340gp more than the +1). Of course, if that wouldn't stack with the shapeshift, then never mind. :)

But seriously, you have no idea how pleased I am to be among the chosen. I am doubly pleased to see that Billy Bardy was picked too as he's a friend of mine IRL.

Your norms are what I do normally anyway, so no problemo. Unless you prefer it the way it is (as a pseudo stat block), I plan on reorganizing my profile to match my usual format, which is to have a bunch of top-level spoilers for the different areas of the character. I find it easier and quicker to find what I'm looking for that way. I also have a standard format for my character bar, but if there's something more you'd like to see there, let me know. I'll be working on finishing things up over the next few days, so by early next week I should have Slick all ready to go.

Slick's job is essentially as a frontline two-handed weapon tank defender, though he can also double as a face (he's not called Silvertongue for nothing). His preferred weapon is the greatsword, but he has a meteor hammer if he needs a little reach. His ranged options are basically all spells. I like the sound of that uncommon crushing rune that Aoibhean mentioned and as I have a few gp left over, I may pick one up for the meteor hammer. Otherwise, the only uncommon/rare option he has is his Second Chance Champion background.

Slick has no healing skills whatsoever and will be relying (heavily) on the rest of the group to keep him on his feet. So the more of you who can supply him with replacement hit points the better.

I initially penciled Slick in as a Varisian, but it makes more sense to have him be from Tian Xia. I've just finished writing up a first draft of his backstory; it will be in the profile, but here it is if you're interested (constructive feedback appreciated).

Backstory:
Slick is the half-elf offspring of a love affair between a human samurai father from Minkai and an elven noble mother from Jinin. The parents' relationship was considered illicit by both their traditional families and when they refused to end it, were cast out of their respective households in dishonor. With nowhere to go, the parents found their way to Goka where the now ronin father made ends meet working as a mercenary, bodyguard, or any job where his skill with a sword was of value. It was there that Soseki was born and raised. His father trained the boy in swordsmanship, but was often absent for long periods of time. True to his name, Soseki was strong-willed, stubborn and rebellious; his mother could not control him. When his father was not around to keep him in line, Soseki would leave home for days at a time and roam the docks of Goka. He would befriend travelers from the west, begging them for stories of adventure to which he would listen in rapt attention. Many of these foreigners had trouble pronouncing his name, and so took to calling him Slick instead. He thought this was marvelous and took the new exotic-sounding name for his own.

Slick grew quickly into a tall and imposingly muscular half-elf. The training he received from his father and from the less salubrious streets of Goku turned him into a skilled fighter. There was something about his very presence that people found intimidating and so he easily found work as a bouncer in the dockside bars where many a fight was stopped in its tracks by one of his ominous glares and a well-timed shout. As feared as he was by the men, he was also quite popular with the ladies. Initially they would find his striking size and build appealing, but his surprising way with words would soon have them eating out of his hands. It was from them that he picked up the moniker of Silvertongue.

In his early 20s, his reputation on the docks of Goku earned him an invitation to the previous Ruby Phoenix Tournament. He cockily accepted, but it wasn't long before he discovered that despite his unquestioned courage, solid fighting skills and natural talents, he was far from ready to face the most skilled combatants on the continent. After struggling through a couple of the early challenges, he was then easily knocked out and ignominiously eliminated from the tournament. The shame and anger of the defeat made him swear to himself that he would spend every waking moment of the next 10 years training hard and preparing for the next tournament. He learned all he could of swordsmanship from his father and then left Goku to travel around Tian Xia, taking any opportunity he found to improve the skills he would need to succeed in the next Ruby Phoenix Tournament. It was in New Oppara that he found a style of fighting that complemented him perfectly. The full plate and greatsword fighting skills he learned from the Taldan knights of Amanandar turned him into a fearsome opponent, and by the time he received his invitation to the next Ruby Phoenix Tournament, he felt he was ready to meet the challenge it head-on.

Healing:
Master of Nature (with the Natural Medicine feat on deck) and Trained in Medicine. After combat healing shouldn't be a problem.

As for healing magic, I wanted to use Vital Beacon since I can't cast spells with most of my shifted forms. Spend an action to lay hands on me and you get healed. That would help Slick and anyone else in melee.

Maybe I can buy a staff of healing to supplement our daily usage.

Equipment:
I'll definitely buy the handwraps. Reading Animal Form, it looks like it won't help the damage dice but it will help the unarmed bonus. Polymorph spells are odd that it says only "circumstance bonuses, status bonuses, and penalties" apply, but then animal form says I can use my unarmed attack bonus- I'm guessing my handwraps will help anyway.

Glory would probably fit Yagon as would the personality, strength and weakness.

My backstory is that Yagon is both Lirgeni and a worshipper of Groetus. He reads the stars as messages from Groetus which led him to the previous tournament with the mission to win and announce himself as a herald of Groetus, proclaiming the calamities to come. With 3 different people able to cast healing spells, one of whom has the Medic archetype, I think I'll leave my Medicine down to Trained and increase my Acrobatics to Expert instead. I'll still have Battle Medicine, healer's tools, and healer's gloves for emergencies, but it looks like we'll be fine on healing both in and out of combat.

I would really prefer for us to Originate from Tian Xia, as that is a good chunk of my current backstory, but in a pinch I can always start from scratch. There are at least two of us that are Second Chance Champions, so perhaps this being a reunion of some old tournament veterans who have recruited some fresh talent to help them take another shot at the prize, might work for the Theme (4, 6, or 7), Motivation (2, 3, or 4) and Personality (1, 5). Don't know about a Sponsor though. If we can get everyone to have a speed of 30' or better (Wands of L2 Longstrider for 160gp each should do the trick), then maybe (7) might work for Strengths, or (2) if we can all cast spells. If we're all really gung-ho to get into battle, then (7) works for a Weakness, or we could come up with a shared phobia (3) or code of honor (5). The quirks are hilarious; I'm almost tempted to roll a d20 to pick one out, though my slight favorites might be (2, 7, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20).

I have a few more thoughts, forgive me if this seems a bit scattered.

A couple things worth noting: the player's guide says these are just ideas, and shouldn't be prescriptive. If there's something we like better that's not on the list, we can go with that instead. Also, the origin isn't necessarily where we're all from; it can also be where we met, so even if that region is Tian Xia it doesn't mean Cirri has to stop being from Ravounel.

I think magic is a good theme for us, since we all have some spellcasting abilities, even our fighter. Some of us even have multiple traditions!

I think glory is the closest to Aoibhean's motivation, though "prove she's not a failure" is closer. Maybe there's a person or group of people who have wronged us who are also fighting in the tournament? I'm sure the AP has an excellent team of mustache twirling jerks for us to come up against. One of the people that thrashed Aoibhean ten years ago being one of our opponents would be a pretty good motivator for her.

I like Cirri being the funding source for our team. My thought is she gets here all the way from Avistan, maybe realizes she can't quite win the whole tournament by herself, and convinces us to help her out by paying our entrance fees. I don't think this makes us mercenaries per se, and it lets us keep our backstories more or less intact.

Personality wise, I'm torn. Aoibhean is competitive, but not mean spirited, and certainly wants to be helpful (because she doesn't anyone to be as humiliated as she was last time). Since I have to roll random stuff every day as part of my ancestry anyway, maybe I should roll on the personality table to see how she's feeling that day!

I think our main Strength is definitely Magic. It's common to all of us, and even our high movement speed is boosted by spells like longstrider or fleet step.

For our Weakness, I think impatience is it. Not everyone on our team has to be impatient, but it definitely fits Aoibhean's personality, and that could count all on its own!

I really love the quirks as well. 2, 3, 13, and 14 are standouts to me. What would our pre-fight team cheer be? Lol

GM, question: does the +1 circumstance bonus to shocking grasp's spell attack roll vs a target wearing (or made of) metal apply if I'm using Spellstrike to deliver it? This isn't going to make or break anything in my build, but it seems to still be a contentious issue and it's better to figure it out now than sometime when that +1 is the determining factor between two degrees of success.

I can casually suggest that "checking off" like 3-5 of the Team Characteristics (instead of all 8) will likely yield a fine Team Concept just the same. Something to consider.

"Contentious" might have been overselling it; it's probably more accurate to say there isn't a consensus and I don't think Paizo has said one way or the other. If I was the GM, I would say yes, though I am admittedly a bit biased here. But it's also what I'd say to one of my players if any of them was playing a magus.

It appears that we are reaching some sort of consensus on the Team Concept.

How about something like the following for a team backstory:

Slick, Aoibhean, and Yagon all competed in the last Ruby Phoenix Tournament and were all eliminated in different but equally humiliating ways. All three swore that they would dedicate the next ten years of their lives to training for the next tournament and thus redeem their (and their deities') honor by winning, no matter what the cost. Over the years, they would run into each other as they made the rounds of the different training schools on Tian Xia. Quite often two or all three of them would find themselves training under the same master at the same time. They formed an unlikely friendship based on mutual respect and in the process learned how to fight together effectively.

Meanwhile, Billy formed his obsession with Hao Jin and decided that he had to participate in the tournament in the hopes of getting closer to his crush. Knowing that he had no chance of succeeding on his own, he wandered around Tian Xia looking for someone that he could latch onto and help carry him through the tournament. He ran into Slick and the two affable smooth-talkers hit it off almost immediately. Their mutual interest in competing in the next tournament served to cement their bond. From that day on, Billy and Slick were inseparable and soon learned to fight effectively as a pair.

As the time of the new tournament approached, Billy and Slick sought out Aoibhean, and then Yagon to see if they were willing to form a team to improve their chances. They agreed readily knowing that strength in numbers was critical to success in the tournament. They then spent the next year training together and turning themselves into a well-oiled fighting machine.

Meanwhile, Cirri became intrigued by the tournament, especially the opportunity it presented to get a look at Hao Jin's treasures should she be a member of the winning team. The problem was that she had left it a bit late and no team would take a chance on her so close to the start of the tournament. Slick, Billy, Aoibhean, and Yagon were having troubles of their own; specifically, they didn't have the funds needed to equip themselves with all the expensive kit they thought they'd need to have a real shot at winning the tournament.

In their desperation, they tried to find someone interested in sponsoring them. Cirri jumped at the chance and was willing to fund the team with only one proviso: She would have to become a fighting member of the team. The four were reticent to bring a fifth person into the team, especially someone they had never trained with and about whom they knew very little. But what choice did they have? No one else had shown an interest in sponsoring them and they desperately needed Cirri's money to outfit themselves properly.

And thus the final team was formed.

Essentially we are dealing with a group of three old friends who have united for another shot at winning the tournament and reclaiming their lost honor. To further this goal, they have recruited two additional members with complementary skills and with their own secondary motivations for competing.

So Team Theme is 6 ...retired companions or old friends who have come together for a reunion tour. Motivations are mainly 2 ...seek the glory that comes with winning, with a dash of 5 ...win riches and possibly a specific treasure from Hao Jin’s vault. I think that 4 ... self-absorbed, narcissistic, or otherwise inclined to divert attention to yourselves, is probably the most fitting Personality (Slick and Brady in particular hit that nail on the head). Sponsor would be a combination of 1 ...the sweat of your own brow, in the case of Cirri, and 6 ...a mysterious benefactor unknown to some or all of you, for the rest of us.

With his Aphorite heritage, Billy's focused on the letter of the law and making sure all our documents are in order. So, he'll be schmoozing with tournament officials, serenading them, buying them drinks, and making sure all our 'i's are dotted and 't's are crossed.

I think I'm calling it a day on Slick's build. Once the final draft of the team concept backstory that I posted earlier is agreed to by the rest of the group, I will update Slick's personal backstory to include the bits that apply to him. The botting instructions are currently empty. I really don't expect that I'll ever be away from my laptop long enough to trigger a bot, but you never know. I will populate this section once we start playing and I get a better idea of how Slick is going to work.

I can see Slick's point about Cyan Sky too much like rainbows and unicorns. :) Fair enough.

However, I personally don't see the need for our name to strike fear. But if we do go that route, we can be fearsome without having evil connotations (for example, really not a fan of Oppressors, Terrorizers, Persecutors, etc.)

Since we're a team of mostly neutral alignments (with the exception of Aiobhean), I kinda like the idea of a sentinel, a neutral watcher/protector/enforcer of law.

I do like Cirri's Cyan Sentinels, but I fear that's bordering on the non-fearsome rainbow and unicorn name that Slick isn't fond of. But regardless, if we're choosing a quirk of matching unis, I'm good with cyan as our team color!

Yagon -- Billy has Faerie Fire in his spell repertoire. He's happy to cast it if needed.

Of course, it doesn't hurt to have more options (depending on initiative order), but if there is a different 2nd level spell you considered preparing, you might be able to.
