Wow, I hadn't considered that. I'm pretty stoked for the kingdom-building stuff, myself, although I'm not sure if that's the boring stuff, or if the actually adventuring stuff is the boring part of the second installment.
From my understanding of past adventures (the third or fourth installment of Second Darkness, the play in Council of Thieves) there are several AP installments that just don't 'flow' well with the rest of the arc, so if this second installment is a red herring or a game-killer, then, yeah, I'd be willing to at least fast-forward some of it.
On the other hand, if the adventure / plotline / encounters are integral to the kingdom-building aspect, I can't speak for everyone, but, for me, that's kind of the entire reason for this APs popularity, and I wouldn't want to miss out on that 'game within a game.'
I guess, in absence of knowing what the hell I'm talking about, I'm not really in a great position to decide one way or another. :)
Whee, watch me ride this fence! Now I'm on this side! Now I'm on that side!
Hey Desperado, come down from your fences!

I'll be honest. I don't know squat on building a "kingdom". Have no idea how you would even go about it in this game. Never done anything like it. Honestly, I never even thought this adventure was gonna be that much fun seeing how that's what you have to do.
It sounds like all kinds of political. That to me is borrr-ring.
Of course, I could have a complete misunderstanding of it, which wouldn't shock me, but me personally, I would have zero problem skipping to the next book.
That all being said, being the new dude, I'll go with whatever you main cats decide.

@Markofbane: I agree with Set mostly. I think what a paladin would define as justice would be heavily influenced by culture. He serves justice as it takes shape in society, but he also serves good, to the best of his knowledge.
I think you played it quite well. I enjoyed how the group dealt with this delicate issue.
@All: the game started April 4 last year. Happy Anniversary!
@Scipion: I trust your judgement on this. Still, from what I've seen, there is a few nasty fights that could be fun to keep. So I guess I'm suggesting jumping through it instead of skipping it, though it's really just a suggestion. I'll be happy with whatever decision.
About the end of the first part, let me know when you want to resume supreme power!

If we determine that the kingdom-building stuff is too boring, I volunteer to take a poke at the behind-the-scenes stuff, unless we are just going to hand-wave it.
Warning/caveat; I've never played Civilization, or any other sort of 'empire building' game, so I might make our kingdom terribly inefficient!
Dreaming Warforged |
So just thinking about the future here. I know one of the big draws to Kingmaker is that you become rulers of the realm. However running the kingdom can be rather tedious...also book 2 in my opinion is a boring. What would your opinions be about "fast-forwarding" through book 2. With a nice big summary of what happened over the two years of building and the situation of everyone afterward.
I'm thinking (and I could be totally wrong here) it might be a nice shot in the arm for the PBP game. Give everyone a chance to add a few levels to their character, and make any changes which would be appropriate over such a long time. Also, shore up each characters wealth-by-level to account for having been a lord of the realm.
This way everyone is in a good place, got some fresh new abilities, and there's a bit more spark to the characters. Not to mention that Book 3 is one of my favorites, and they only get cooler the farther you go.
If this seems like a bad idea just let me know, it was your game originally.
The more I think about it, the more I agree. Still, I would prefer a very fast fast-forwarding, as you mentioned, to an actual skip.
If you want time to prepare, I can finish the first volume no problem, as we're about to head back (and you have no keyboard...).

I'm all for forwarding to plot, especially since in PbP things move more slowly anyway...however...I feel I'd be more tied into, and care more about the kingdom we're establishing if I were involved.
I like the idea of maybe a separate OOC thread where you ask us questions, and give us choices, as though we were successfully completing the encounters.
This could run concurrently with the action / in character thread we are on now. Just let us know what we need to do to level up, including maybe a list of items found, npc's encountered etc. and we can level up, and keep the game running, while the new thread works retroactively.

I would say let's hit the kobolds and mites, but I am willing to skip ahead if the majority wants to go that way.
Second that vote. Eradicate the mites, see if we can build on the diplomacy / convert to Erastil notion with the kobolds (or just eradicate them if we blow the diplomacy...).
Yanno, unless the mites kick our asses. I may be just a tad overconfident, given how nasty fey could be in previous editions. (It has six hit points, polymorph your ass into something that kills all of your friends, like an ochre jelly or will-o-wisp or iron golem and Mumble's irresistable mamba? For reals?)

Servayn is having a little fun at Janku and Kriger's expense.
Hopefully no one is bothered by this! Let me know if I'm toeing the line of 'not funny, more jerk-y.'
Certainly no offence. This is one of my favorite PbP's and it's all good stuff. We've had some fantastic character dynamics in this game. Wish I my real life group could play this adventure with this much interaction.

Ah, what a great image! "Sorry chaps, I rolled a 2 on diplomacy. Looks like it is genocide for you!" :)
On a side note, I just got my ticket to Paizocon. Anyone else going this year from the group?

Oh, I'd kill to go, but between unreliable job opportunities (A real phone call I got, 'Hi, glad I got in touch with you. Don't come in tonight, we laid everyone in your section off. Sorry for the short notice...'), and the terrible life-choice that led to my living on the exact wrong coast (kidding, love it here), PaizoCon's not really an option for me.
And if I get a reliable job, I'll probably be working and unable to go, so it's like Catch-22, but not as well written.

I know. I'm fortunate I'm a local, so for me it is $35 and some gas money.
Ooh, that's cool! Gotta admit, while I love New Hampshire, Washington state also sounds pretty cool.
Set, sorry to hear about the job situation. I'm waiting to hear what is going to happen, if the feds are going to allow the company I work for to be "acquired." Ugh.
Eh, my job situation comes and goes. I'm used to it. I'm a bit of a 'don't buy anything you can't afford / pay in cash' self-sufficiency nut sort of guy, so I can usually get by on a few months of work a year.
Good luck with the acquisition! Those can be rough. (I can blame a few of my layoffs on those, as the company I did QA for got bought like, four times, and I got laid off three of those times, and later rehired, because companies are generally pretty dumb about laying off people they actually weren't done with yet...)

Are you kidding me?! That's what makes it fun!
Kriger wouldn't know it anyway. :)
Great stuff!

Don't worry, I actually love it. I just want to respect jurisdictions and not start something that would force Scipion's hand one way or another.
In fact, I got out of two "way-too-slow" games to clear up some time for DMing. So once Scipion takes over this one, I going to work on the Eberron game I keep talking about.

Thanks a lot for keeping the game running DW, it's been an awesome game and it's been great that you jumped in and kept it going!

Two things:
1. As I've had a great time so far playing with you, be sure that I would be happy to play with you in the Eberron campaign I'm hoping to start (see link above).
2. Scipion, someone asked me to play your archetype. I think it's the second time this happens. What a great recognition!
scranford |
Well since my other Eberron game just came to an abrupt end...I'm interested. I'll have to give it some thought, and see what the changes entail. I normally use Herolab to make the characters since it saves a bunch of time, but I might be able to massage it enough to make things workable. I'm on the road for business this week, but have internet access at night. I'll read the thread and see what might work.

Ha, once again that is totally awesome.

Scranford, we've played long enough together. If you can just post the fluff, it will be enough for me to make a decision about the party's composition. No worries.

I've taken a look at the concept for your game, and it certainly looks interesting. It seems that scranford already has a good idea for a changling rogue type, so I might go with a changling sorcerer for a more arcane role. It is still speculation though as I want to be sure I can devote the time for another game before I apply.
Dreaming Warforged |
That sounds very sound(!). It's easy to spread oneself just too thin. the boards are filled with examples. I had eight games at one point. I've postponed the urge to start this one until Scipion could take KM back. even then, the lesson learned from those examples has made me remove my participation in all but the real regular games. So I'm down to four now (five if the other Eberron manages to survive, which Scranford and I doubt)! I hope I have the right number for me, as I wouldn't want to drop another.

Sales is such a tough line of work! I always thought that everybody sucks at sales. I had a prof who told us about his sale experience (I believe it was encyclopedia). He said he would be happy every time he got a no! His theory was that you land about one in a hundred. Every no meant he was getting closer to the one yes. I remember thinking to myself that you really need to be able to develop the right mindset...
Anyway, all this to say: it's a very tough job.
Hang in there. Set might have the solution, though I also believe it's a tough path, though I also believe you have talent. I think Neil Spicer commented on it during the Superstar competition.

Hey DW. Thanks for the confidence, but I'm just to pressed for time to do another game right now...particularly one in a setting I haven't played in a while. Just not sure I could do it justice. I would like to play in one of your game sometime, as I think you'd do a fabulous job. This one has some of my favorites applying in it as well...but just time getting in the way. Good luck, and I'll be lurking. I'll probably put together a character when I get time anyway, as we know attrition can attack at any time.

That's too bad. Let me know, as I would have no problem finding you a spot. Btw, Rennick has put his three games on hold, and Megan's CoT is not looking too healthy...

I was having to spend a ton of time studying for my insurance license and training for work during the final round of the Superstar. I think it showed in my final product unfortunately. I cannot wait to get more information about our Society modules. They've got me chomping at the bit!
