So, Giovanni tries to make the opposition less threatening, and generates AoOs for other party members.
Barm obviously just beats things down. Quickly, it appears.
My untrained eye isn't sure what Marta, specifically, tries to do . . ..

Quenly is a very flexible character with numerous tricks and tactics:
Most often Quenly is a support caster.

A couple of players have not decided what characters to bring. I will give you a couple of days to settle that and introduce yourselves before starting the briefing.
It looks like the party makeup so far is:
Fighter 14
Fighter 12
Inquisitor/Monk 14
Oracle 12

Marta has some skills and is a decent fighter with extremely impressive saves and resilience to spells. Her AC is bad though and she typically spends a couple rounds ramping up by casting shield and/or shield of faith.
If Otto comes with I would greatly appreciate a barkskin spell.
I call her Mrs Math since she keeps a bewildering array of long term buffs in place and also casts short term buffs. Each round is a new round of math. This is a list of the most common buffs which I keep in a Active Condition Details spoiler at the top of my character sheet. They won't fit in the tag line :)
Greater Magic Weapon on handwraps (when she wakes up, 24 hours)
Greater Magic Weapon on spear UC (when she wakes up, 24 hours)
Hunter's Blessing (when she wakes up, 26 hours)
Mage Armor (when TBD, 1 hour)

Looks like we could use an arcane caster. Or druid. A druid has a different enough list of spells to add variety. A bard would have lots of fun with this group too.

![]() |

GMW? What + do you get?
The older version of duelling on my chain gets me double the numeric plus as luck bonuses for combat maneuvers. So, a +3 enhancement is a net +3 to my disarm/reposition/trip games. Not that I normally need much more there, but . . ..

![]() |

I am sorry to have to do this and I wish I was more organized. When I pulled on my 13th level rogue it appears he has played this one already. So I must bow out and let someone else play.
I have recently moved for the first time in my adult life and much of my life, including all of my PFS stuff is in boxes.
Again, I am sorry but am glad I caught this now. Thanks for the opportunity.

![]() |

A lot of higher level play involves much maths I'm finding ;)
Quenly also tosses out a stack of spells, both long and short duration, and if I'm using Many Forms as well then the statline can really change.

cmlobue |

Ravyn would raise the average to 13.4, at which point it would entirely depend on Otto's character which tier to play.

![]() |

I'm fine playing low tier with Ravyn as well.
Tsukushima Reiko (most folks call her Ravyn) is a 15th level tengu bard archivist. She has all the knowledges and can make checks for any skill, trained or not. She also know all the human languages on Golarion plus a smattering of others. She can ID any magic item and UMD anything else. She has a bajillion (well, only like 12) wands of utility stuff.
In combat, she's very much in a support role. Her inspire courage is a +3 insight bonus to AC, attacks and saves against a particular type of creature (like babau, as opposed to demons in general). She has haste and bard's escape which help getting into combat quickly. She can aid AC and attacks for other folks and is decent at not getting hit.

cmlobue |

Looks like we have a request for Otto O'Read to round out the party and play at subtier 12-13. Is that good for you, Abraham?

![]() |

GM, what do you say to Rayvn's archivist ability working for Quenly via Quenly's telepathic dragon? Quenly is deaf (oracle curse) but uses a shadow conjuration draconic ally as a telepathic interpreter/translator. Naturalist says it "requires visual and audible components".
Several more of Rayvn's performances also say "visual and audible components."
Bardic performances can be a problem for deaf PCs.

![]() |

Yeah, deaf is a challenge. For naturalist, the flavor is that the bard is lecturing you on the strengths and weaknesses of the particular creature. @GM, would that be acceptable for the telepathic interpreter? I'm also willing to spring for a scroll of Telepathic Bond, if that would help.
I don't usually use most of the other bardic performances.

cmlobue |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

As long as Quenly can understand the content of Ravyn's message (which should not be a problem at this level) he can get the bonus from bard song.

![]() |

Otto needs to do some leveling up - I put the GM chronicles for Eyes of the Ten on him so he has some significant changes since I last played him. I'll try to get this done in the next day or two.
Also, since I've played and run this, I'll take a backseat for anything that would be spoilery or metagaming.

![]() |

GM, can I please get a ruling from you on whether or not you count as "adjacent" to a creature that you are mounted on? The rules seem to be ambiguous about it and the searching online I've done suggests this is in the ask-your-GM category. Otto has been building up to being able to ride on his dinosaur companion and this will be the first time I'm actually able to use that. I've purchased the Horsemaster's Saddle, which gives the mount all the owner's teamwork feats, while mounted, so I'm considering adding some teamwork feats but I'm noticing that a lot of them have language like "when adjacent to an ally with this teamwork feat..." Any thoughts?

cmlobue |

I think it would be difficult to ride a creature without being adjacent to it.

![]() |

A note about Quenly's Perception score, GM:
Quenly's 'best' bonus is +19. However, being deaf he automatically fails hearing-based perception checks and he takes a -4 penalty on opposed checks (like if someone's trying to use Stealth). He has a masterwork tool (spectacles) for sight based perception that is added into the +19, so for anything not using sight his bonus is +17.
He does have darkvision, see in darkness, lowlight vision, and scent as well :)

![]() |

Since we are obviously going to be facing fire and earth elementals of various sorts, may I recommend to our melee guys in particular the Amulet of Elemental Strife? This 4000gp neck-slot trinket allows the wearer to overcome the DR of elementals (including DR/-).
Possibly worth swapping for your Amulet of Natural Armour, especially when Otto and Quenly can give you Barkskin (Otto prepares the spell, Quenly uses Channel the Gift to use his spell slot instead of Otto's).

![]() |

Would be nice, but I'm broke. Upgrades to get where I am, don't ya know? And, again, damage isn't really Giovanni's focus.
I'm more concerned about facing elemental fire which fire immunity doesn't protect you from.

![]() |

Yeah, seems like best defence there might be 'don't get hit'! Quenly can give you Displacement. As for AoE, might just have to heal up afterwards. Good Reflex saves may help. Heroism/Greater Heroism/Good Hope will be helpful.

![]() |

Protection from fire might help. It's not a resistance just absorbs the damage. *Might* is the keyword.

![]() |

4000gp is a bit stiff to protect against one scenario's opponents. And then there are the 3 lesser talismans Marta like to wear so that she lives. Finally, she only has 3500 gp or so.
Things to know about Marta.

![]() |

Apologies, everyone. I still haven't gotten Otto leveled up and I'm a bit swamped with work for the next day or two. I'll get caught up as soon as possible.
For scenario prep, I'll defer to everyone else on preparations, including what spells might be particularly useful for Otto to prepare. Since I've GM-ed this already I don't want to use metagame knowledge - I have some standard spells that I always prepare (e.g. Greater Magic Fang for his dinosaur), but other than those I'm open to requests. I think I have all or most of the books so I should be able to prepare any legal Druid spells up through level 6.
Also, Otto has some gold so he can purchase scrolls or other stuff that we might need (but I would prefer to have others make the suggestions).

![]() |

I'll have a look at scrolls and spells later today Otto. Quenly can help share Otto's buffs around a bit.
Marta, Quenly also knows Hunter's Blessing if you want to save your higher level spell slots.

![]() |

@Otto
As mentioned please prepare an extra barkskin (or two, though she will lend you a lesser rod of extend for the casting so hopefully the duration will be enough) for Marta.
Do not bother preparing Hunter's Blessing as she can cast that at a higher level and does not prepare spells. Though casting it twice is not a bad thing if we pick different enemies and terrains! I'll be taking underground and elementals of course.

![]() |

Sorry, ran out of day - will look over druid stuff tomorrow all being well.
What are people's thoughts on the artifacts? Who should hold them?

![]() |

Based on the slides, nobody proficient with the weapon has earth affinity, so . . .. Marta or Bram for the weapon.
Nobody shows water affinity, either, so I would probably give the decanter to Quenly.
And as far as prep choices go, options to protect us from "normal" elemental fire, potentially elemental acid. Things that might make trueflame more survivable.
I know. Not much help.
I have a feeling that reposition and MAYBE trip are going to be primary attacks on this journey. Remember, being tripped by Giovanni provokes for everyone who can reach, and movement caused by Giovanni repositioning provokes like normal movement, except from me. Even Quickened Reposition is during my turn only. Not available as an AoO.

![]() |

Inquisitors are rather picky regarding weapons and a heavy pick is most certainly not on their list barring worshipping a deity that favors one, which Ragathiel does not. So Bram should get the pick then. I'm good with Queenly having the Breath of Lysianassa. Which leaves the Opal. Sounds like a druid thing but anyone can use it. Preferably someone who is not a front liner.

![]() |

Ravyn will take anything you want to give her. She's not terribly good at combat whether she's proficient or not. She's going to pick up some resist potions before they head out.

![]() |

I was thinking maybe Giovanni could take the pick - I fear there may be enemies that his usual tactics won't work on, though I look forwards to seeing various elementals dragged this way and that and getting battered as they go! The pick would be an excellent backup weapon. Barm has a +5 sword already, so he's punching through any DR except DR/-
That's also the main reason why I like the Amulet of Elemental Strife. DR/- is common amongst elementals, and we'll be facing stronger sorts.
Quenly will probably be using spells or breath weapons to attack, rather than melee; he is reliant on his Heartstone of the Wronged (neck slot) to grant Greater Polymorph via Many Forms.
Otto might be a better candidate than Quenly for the Breath of Lyssianassa - I know he has at least Water Affinity 1 because I GM'd him in an aquatic scenario :)
I think Rayvn is probably ideal to carry the either the Opal or the Breath - she's not a combatant but could use the Breath against Fire creatures.
I might consider using Quenly's Dragon to carry something. It has to stay well out of combat - it's a shadow conjuration with only 3 hit points (though it doesn't die until negative 15). It has a weak 1/day breath weapon. It will need protecting from environmental factors the same as the rest of us.

![]() |

What is a Heartstone of the Wronged? I did a search and could not find it. Is it a boon from a chronicle?
I like your reasoning for the items and would go with that.

![]() |

Yup, the Heartstone is a chronicle item.
It grants immunity to disease, but most importantly for Quenly it boosts his effective Oracle level for Many Forms by 2; added to +1 from his favoured class bonus that takes him to level 15 and Greater Polymorph.

![]() |

So are we agreed on this...
Giovanni: Pick
Otto: Breath of Lyssianassa
Rayvn: Opal

![]() |

Sorry to be so late to this discussion but if it matters, Otto has proficiency in heavy picks (from his one level dip in Hunter). However, I'm also fine with carrying the Breath of Lyssianassa - it occupies a hand which will mean that Otto can't use his usual weapon (a scythe) but this will give him a good excuse to try out his new lance that he just purchases.

![]() |

Just getting caught up on all the discussion. Otto and Allison are both melee types. She is large but he can swift enlarge her to huge and she has the lunge feat and pounce so she can charge/full attack foes 20' away. For this scenario it sounds like he'll be wielding his lance which also attacks from 20' (due to his large size).
He doesn't bother with summoning stuff (I don't think I've ever used his summoning abilities even once and in any case they are constrained by his goliath druid archetype) and just stays in giant form all the time (which, among other things, gives him regeneration).
As long as he is mounted on Allison they have the Improved Share Spells teamwork feat so he can cast a spell once and divide the duration between the two of them.
Here's the allotment of spells that I currently have prepared but I'm open to suggestions for changes. Among other things, Quenly, think about how much use you'd like to make of Channel the Gift. Right now I have a bunch of spells with multiple preps but I could reduce some of them if you want to use Channel the Gift to fuel those castings. Anyway, here's the current list - I'll put asterisks next to ones that I definitely want to prep. The [D] spells are domain spells, so I have no say about those. Also, I currently have communal stoneskin prepped but that does require everyone who wants it to kick in 250 gp for the diamond dust material component, so that's something worth discussing.
. . 6th—antilife shell[D], quickened resist energy, communal stoneskin[UC], wall of stone
. . 5th—communal air walk[UC], beast shape III (animals only)[D], quickened enlarge person *** (self only) (2, DC 17), wall of thorns
. . 4th—air walk ***, freedom of movement ***, life bubble ***, strong jaw, summon nature's ally IV (animals only)[D]
. . 3rd—dominate animal[D] (DC 19), greater magic fang (3) ***, communal resist energy[UC] (2)
. . 2nd—barkskin (6), hold animal[D] (DC 18)
. . 1st—bristle[APG] (DC 17), calm animals[D] (DC 17), cheetah's sprint, feather step[APG] (DC 17), liberating command[UC], longstrider, shillelagh (DC 17)

![]() |

Welcome Otto and Allison the Allosaurus!
Good spell list, Otto.
I've only got one or two suggestions.
I doubt Wall of Stone will be very effective, given the likelihood of Earth Glide amongst opponents, though it might serve to constrain the fire elementals we meet. Maybe consider Gravity Sphere if you own the source? A 30 foot radius sphere of zero gravity would lift everything in it off the ground, no save and no SR. Could disable enemies that lack flight.
Communal Stoneskin is good, but also expensive. Quenly also encourages everyone to bring a supply of diamond dust, if fuels both Stoneskin and Restoration. (Consider Greater Dispel Magic if folks don't want the Stoneskin, though Quenly would accept the cost for himself).
A Communal Feather Step would be handy in a level 2 slot.
Quenly would definitely want a GMF and possibly Barkskin for himself, so count on 2 Channel the Gift uses there - for others, we can work out some sharing of the slots between us.

![]() |

What kind of healing do we have? Ravyn can get some free scrolls from Zarta. She usually picks up a breath of life or restoration (negative levels), plus one or two others. Anything we need?

![]() |

OK. I'll get a BoL because it can't hurt, and protection from fire from Zarta. I have a BoL talisman for myself. 2 PP for a scroll of communal protection from fire. 10 gp for a couple of spring loaded wrist sheaths.

![]() |

Quenly is not a dedicated healer, but does have all the cure wounds spells up to level 6, BoL and Heal. Only 3 level 6 spell slots per day though.
