The man falls into the pit and is clearly in pain. For the first time, one of the townsfolk speak, "Come on. It's the only way. It's the only way. We must kill them."

The other three move in with their poorly held and awkwardly weilded daggers. They scurry past the pit to close with Ianthe.

As Lady Gewbell stated – bands of townsfolk with haunted eyes in a stupor.

I wonder, is this part of this Cult of the Twilight Child?

Kenton's blade is in his hand at the first sign of trouble (swashbuckler initiative), and he maneuvers to provide Ianthe an escape route.

Weighing his options, he tries to knock the dagger out of Blue's hands. No Improved Disarm, so this provokes.
Disarm: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26

"Something is wrong. We must not hurt them."

She takes a careful step back, then begins the flowing gestures of a spell. She speaks words of conjuration, drawing power from within her and channeling it into magic.

A burst of sparkling glitter erupts past where the three men are. It washes over the townsfolk, and flows into the newly created pit.
Glitterdust, DC 18 Will save or be Blinded. Because the spell is a spread it should flow into the pit as well. Might be only 5th down, so not sure that's enough to catch the man in the pit

He starts to sing a lullaby, and casually tosses some sand into the air and then turns the movement into a series of arcane finger twitches. DC15

Xavien gets the strong feeling that these townsfolk are charmed. So, he roundly raps one upside the head. There's no way he could take a second like that.

Aurelia and Corran both weave spells to difuse the situation:

Corran tunes in to the specific phrase... stop the nightmares. He takes out his lute and begins to play.

He's going to try to unravel what has these men, one step at a time. Starting with Fascinate. I can get two of them (1+1 more for every 3 beyond first level)

DC, if they resist, is 17. Will Save.

Corran finds that they're really too exhausted to resist.

The fascination works on two of them, but it's clear they're still bound by something. The casters are confident that a Dispel Magic would help, and a Protection from Evil spell would definitely help.

She touches the nearest townsperson, placing the abjurative magic on them, and then repeats this for the remaining folk. By the end the wand feels brittle in her hand. "There's not much magic left, so I do hope this is enough."

Free of whatever held them, the townspeople admit to having terrible nightmares and were convinced that killing YOU will put a stop to them. The townspeople share that "a 'white ram' with black eyes convinced" them of this, though they’re at a loss to explain why they believed the talking beast in their dreams. The entire group of them are effusively apologetic and helpful, but they can provide little information other than to describe the white ram and their nightmares in vivid detail.

Freeing them earns each of you 640 XP.

Any historical, mythological, religious significance?

I have ranks in everything, and if I can roll before deciding to Take 20 (Loremaster) I will. But if I can't, I'll use Loremaster right now.

MAP TEMPLATES | Social Combat | War for the Crown | Campaign Tracker |

Corran himself goes a bit pale Using Loremaster. It sounds like they're describing a type of Div. While demons exist to destroy, devils yearn to corrupt and control, and daemons seek the death of all things, the foul beings known as divs strive to ruin and despoil all things created by mortals. This sounds like a div called a pairaka.

A sensual pairing of seduction and destruction, pairakas embody the corruptive nature of unbridled lust. Pairakas spend little time in their true form while on the Material Plane, choosing to cloak themselves instead in alluring forms to seduce potential victims, ruin relationships, and foment obsession. In its true form, a pairaka’s body is a foul landscape of blazing rashes, oozing pustules, and taut blisters suggestive of the corruptions it harbors, bodily and spiritually.

Pairakas pride themselves on perversion. They love nothing more than turning lovers against one another or destroying the bonds of friendship. Pairakas feed off this slow torment and savor each broken heart or disappointment. They use lust and sexuality as their primary tools, wielding taboos and carnal appetites to sever once-friendly relationships. Pairakas also use their seduction to spread disease, charming victims into physical contact.

When the townsfolks are gone, he gestures towards the hill. "Shall we continue?"

MAP TEMPLATES | Social Combat | War for the Crown | Campaign Tracker |

They wave, still somewhat out of it.

The party continues to head towards the hill.

Yanmass’s largest public park, Hedge Hill, surrounds a remnant of primeval forest. Rumors hold that a dryad flits through the trees at the center of Hedge Hill, but only the very young or very inebriated claim to see her.

Hedge Hill is an orderly, well-tended park with rolling hills of cut grass and carefully arranged flowers. The center of the park is a wild tangle of vegetation, standing in stark contrast to the meticulous beauty of the rest of the park. This central forest is overgrown, with few paths, and the dense trees create deep shadows even on bright days.

I know it's 1e, but I essentially need everyone to pick an exploration activity as you move about the park.

DC 26 Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14

Kenton whips his head to and fro, without success in locating the source of the voice.

Unable to ascertain the person's location, Ianthe casts See Invisibility.

Impossible for me to hit that DC, so not even going to try.

Aurelia remains calm in spite of the hidden voice. After all, she's with strong friends capable of many things. She smiles even when Ianthe works a spell to see the invisible. "As you say, Lord Karthis. We are looking for people, and we mean no harm. If a place of quiet is needed for us all to have a conversation from prying eyes, I think we'd be happy to accommodate."

No one is able to locate the source, and Ianthe's spell doesn't reveal anything either. Whoever (or whatever) is talking, it's hiding the old fashioned way.

There's no immediate answer to Xavien. I'll take a Diplomacy check to Improve Attitude. Definitely one from Xavien and Aurelia. Others can aid.

Also, Aurelia has Silver-Tongued, which allows her to shift attitude up to 3 steps. Might not matter in this case, but it might.

A woman steps out of hiding. You're shocked you didn't see her, but see her you did not. She's a lean, muscular woman with a haunted look in her eyes.

"I don't know of the earl, but I do know that newcomers have been... dangerous of late. What say you.... newcomers?" she's got a well taken care of bow trained at Aurelia.
