Aggrammar Deepdelver wrote:"they be seein' prety well in the dark, the damned bastards"Baldrick looks concerned "Are... are you feeling alright, friend Aggrammar? Do you have trouble seeing in the dark?" Abruptly he clams up and his eyes widen: Oh no! - maybe hill dwarves can't see in the dark. Aloud, awkwardly, he says: "Well, that's okay. We'll keep a light on for you."
"I don't be needin' no fires ta see" - Aggrammar raises an eyebrow at Baldrick - "But the people livin' around these parts do" - he replies.

@Greycastle: Do we know what "sacrifices to Auril" are going to involve? And to whom "no fires" applies?
Please correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think that any of you have been in the area of Ice Wind Dale in the last year otherwise you would know a more accurate answer to this. Sacrifices could mean a variety of things. Anywhere between human sacrifice (Auril is not a god of good, so this would not be unheard of) to giving up something of value to appease the apparently angry goddess. You got the impression from Foster that the “no fires” sign applied to those in the vicinity of town.
Emmett Escheus |
Emmett does his best to keep up the pace, but he can't help but wonder how much help he will be should the Goblins turn hostile while he turns purple from lack of air.
Baldrick Longhall |
@Greycastle: No worries! I just wanted to make sure - I rolled a Religion check, but I figure the DC would be pretty high (and I, personally, don't really know anything about Auril either).
I don't know / remember enough about the geography and history of Faerûn, but I think of Baldrick's clan as being from the northwest (possibly in the Spine?). Isolated but not insular - most of their outside contact by way of traders. Though Baldrick himself is pretty naïve, so what knowledge he's picked up and how he interprets it are both kinda shaky.
After pointing out the trail, Baldrick is happy to fall into step with the main group, letting Turq and Rodalas take the lead.

I feel like I would have only the barest hint of her being a goddess of winter, having grown up in Ten Towns. I would say that superstitious traditions that towners would pay lip service, at the least, to Auril for a mild winter. I figure I know about as much as a sailor may know about Umberlee.

Northwest could be Mirabar, or possibly Mithral Hall / Gauntlgrym.
Greycastle |
Following the now easily noticeable trail, the party moves even further into the wood. The shadows from the trees around you make seeing much outside the range of your torch impossible with assisted vision.
Before long you come across a mound of snow and strangely a boot sticking out of it. Too add to the odd scene, the boot seems to twitch occasionally.
Emmett Escheus |
Emmett, his arms slapping against his sides to stay warm, watches the Goliath rush forward, but, feeling cold and exposed, then takes the opposite view and instead of watching the mound, he watches the forest for movement.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |
Turq's grip tightens on the haft of his maul, in case this is an ambush...
Wisdom (Perception): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Greycastle |
Mир moves forward quickly to save the booted person stuck in the snow with Aggrammar close behind, while the others stand ready for any possible trouble.
It’s the click of metal on metal that is your first hint of trouble. 1d2 ⇒ 1. Mир's booted? foot lands on something surprisingly not snow like. Metal Trap: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28 Oof The traps metal jaws sink deep into Mир's leg. Piercing Damage: 2d10 ⇒ (5, 6) = 11
Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |
Oh, sh--! Turq rushes forward to pry the trap open, using the haft of his maul as a lever!
If we need a Str check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
If the lever gives advantage: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Baldrick Longhall |
As the group paused, Baldrick set the head of his warhammer on the ground to pick irritably at a piece of his lunch, currently lodged between his teeth. At the (usually quiet) goliath's cry and then collapse, Baldrick looks up hurriedly, snatching up his weapon: "Huh - wha'? Where?!"
Umikh Ironbender |
Hmmm...evens/odds: 1d2 ⇒ 1
Umikh was watching the booted foot with interest and saw the trap snap around their large friend's leg. He shouts and jumps up to help pry it apart.
add'l strength check if needed, else an assist: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9 Welp hopefully Turq's got it.
Emmett Escheus |
Emmett jumps at the snap of the trap, then cringes at the wet sound that comes with it.
This might complicate our negotiations... he thinks to himself, but otherwise stays focused on the forest, expecting the other shoe to drop.
Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |
Can I try to pick the lock?
It sounds like a bear trap, which does not really lock when sprung. It is usually a very strong spring, I think. Simply prying it open ought to work...
Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |
Agrammar! Can ye do something? Turq calls out as he pries the jaws apart from the goliath's leg...
Greycastle |
Turq rushes forward and easily muscles the metal bear trap open. The sound of metal scraping bone and flesh freeing itself from Mир's gnarled extremity can be heard by the others. Umikh rushes up and helps put to pull the ruined foot out while the Goliath falls off to the side with agroaning thud.
Aggrammar has yet to act but we can move forward with another round of actions. We’ll give Agg the weekend to respond. We aren’t necessarily in initiative but a round by round scene has begun.
Umikh Ironbender |
Umikh will begin common sense first aid (as in, I am no medic but can wrap a wound) unless we have a healer to step up?
Aggrammar Deepdelver |
Agrammar! Can ye do something? Turq calls out as he pries the jaws apart from the goliath's leg...
"I am on it lad - were just waitin' fer ye to take his foot out o' that durned trap" - Aggrammar moves close to Mир, putting his hands around the wound.
Cure Wounds: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
"There" - the dwarf smiles - "Almost good as new"
By default, weekends = slow posting for me ;)

Not a problem. We all know the drill I think. Play by post is generally not for those without patience. I find it amazing that my wife (Umikh) can stand this pacing lol.
Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |
No problem, Aggie! ^_^
Turq lets out a breath, Thank Moradin... Mir, ye alright?

Some days I'm on here, smashing the refresh button every hour, and sometimes I can only manage a post once every 2 days - for me, it's a function of boredom and mental health :)
Baldrick rushes past the others, a shocked look on his face: "Clangeddin's Axe! Are you alright?! What happened?" Reaching down, Baldrick offers a hand to help the goliath to his feet.
Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |
Apparently, this was a trap. It looks like this was likely meant to trap some curious creature checking out the boot, but it got big Mir, instead! Turq shakes his head as he helps the big druid up to his feet.
I hear ya, Baldrick! I am the same...
@DM, that must mean Mihkey is having a good time! ;)
Rodalas Windrace |
The eladrin will check out the kind of foot it is as he takes the trap, clamping it shut so it will not harm anyone else.
Greycastle |
Aggrammar rushes up followed by most of the others and applies magical medical attention to Mир's injury. In various forms all manage to get the big fella up to his large feet.
Rodalas figuring the others had the Goliath covered, moved to find out what the interesting boot was all about. On his way to the boot, he reaches down and snags the large bear trap dragging the metal contraption along with him. As he pulls away, an attached cord reveals itself and stretches taught preventing Rodalas from moving too far from the traps initial location.
it looks like everybody reacted to the trap going off. We’re still in a round by round situation so what do you all do for your next action.
Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |
Once Mир is okay, if we don't see any threats or anything of interest, Turq would suggest they move on.
Baldrick Longhall |
Baldrick looks puzzled: "Don't that seem like a weird way ta trap game? What're they tryna catch?"
Moving cautiously forward, he swats at the boot with his hammer.
Investigation: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (2) + 0 = 2
Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |
Turq shrugs, Bears maybe? Something that is hungry enough to tug on a buried fool...
Mир |
Mир gasps awake and instictively reaches down to his foot which is mostly healed. "Thank you," he rumbles and gives a groan as he stands with assistance. His face darkens as he continues, "Chances are higher that they hunt those who would try to save someone."
Emmett Escheus |
At Turq's signal, Emmett sighs, but otherwise follows suit, keeping silent.
Baldrick Longhall |
"Chances are higher that they hunt those who would try to save someone."
Baldrick looks troubled: "You mean, like aah... like a dog?"
Shuffling his feet uncomfortably: "I'm not sure we can trust people who hunt dogs..."
Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |
Break it. Though, once it is set off, it won't work again until it is reset. As a rogue, I am certain there is possibly a a way to break or remove the pin so that it cannot be set again...
Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |
From what I have seen, if these are tribal folk, I doubt their aim is dogs. When ye hunt, or set traps, ye're looking to feed the tribe. Those traps are usually for bears or scavengers. Don't be quick to judge until ye've met these folk. Then make yer call, Turq says matter-of-factly, They may be violent, so be ready fer that. But if we can avoid bloodshed, I'd rather we all make it back in one piece, eh?
Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |
Rodalas, your alias is showing!
Turq shrugs, Look at Mir, he didn't suffer long. Bigger beasties may survive longer, but if they are true hunters, they'd check this trap fairly often... Anyway, I ain't arguing that them traps are nasty, but if ye're huntin' fer yer tribe, ye ain't going ta be picky. Ye're gonna take what ye can get! O' course, may have been set by the gobbos...

I actually like the pace of these games. But DM is right, "patience" is foreign concept to me, lol.
Umikh audibly gasped at the suggestion that a trap was to lure in dogs, but upon examining and thinking about it, he agrees this is probably to attract bears. Or people.
Well we best be on our guard regardless. Does anyone see tracks of the ones what laid down this trap? Perhaps we can follow them. Or wait, maybe they'll come to us?
Emmett Escheus |
Emmet nods at Turq, taking in the wisdom in his words and thinking them over. He needed to see this through the Goblin’s eyes. Otherwise, there would no chance for a peaceful solution to emerge.
Rodalas Windrace |
Mir did not suffer long because he had his group to save him from the trap. Humans and elves and halflings and dwarves also have hands which can be used to get themselves or others out of such a trap. Alone he would be stuck here. Animals do not have hands that can be used for this type of activity. It is a cruel and barbaric way of killing or maiming another creature/
Turquoise 'Turq' Barreltap AL |
Or, he'd be dead. There was no suffering there, Turq says matter-of-factly, No offense, eh Mir?
He moves on a little bit before continuing, I understand ye're from somewheres else, but this is a frozen hell where ye fight ta survive. If they eat whatever they catch, I would rather it be a fast kill than something drawn out. Of course, ye come from a place that might be more hospitable...
