Selann Juris |

Once the decision is made, Selann ends the traitor with his dagger, then cleans the blade and sheaths it. Once that is done he joins Caliban searching, casting Detect Magic to scan for magical auras.

GM Losonti |

RIP to the traitors taken out by color spray, they never got to act.
A thorough examination of the bodies yields quite the find.
Coins of varying denominations amounting to 164.44 gp
6 flasks full of colorful liquids, which detect as magical
12(!) clubs
2 shortbows
None of the flasks are labeled, so go ahead and roll me some spellcraft or perception checks to identify them.

Ok, I put all the bad rolls out of the way. Let's go!

GM Losonti |

As two of the flasks have identical auras and coloration, Massielo is able to identify the pair of them as potions of magic fang. The rest, however, keep their secrets. From him, at least.

Tristan de Lion |

Tristan quickly sniffs each bottle.

GM Losonti |

That'll do it. :)
Tristan, using only the power of his nose, is able to identify the remaining potions. 2 are potions of resistance, another is a potion of pass without trace, and the last one is another potion of cure light wounds.

Fred Junior |

Junior logs their findings in a ledger. He then hands out two potions of cure light wounds to everyone, "Take these, just in case. Everyone ready?" Junior absentmindedly opens his mouth like a fish while breathing, probably because he has lost his nose.
Have the money, gems, and potions noted on the loot sheet. We have 16 (!) potions of cure light wounds so I divied all but two between the party. I added two CLW potions to each of your sheets.

Junior opens the door into what looks like a common room, with the southwest portion taken up by stout stone chairs that surround a block of larger stone that serves as a table. The table’s top is strewn with bone dice and cracked clay jugs. Stained canvas pillows rest on the chairs. A copper bowl filled with coals hangs from the ceiling, filling the room with warmth and an orange glow.
Junior scarcely has time to take this in when an arrow flies through the open door, fired by another mongrelman waiting across the room. As the arrow strikes home, Junior's assailant moves off to the corner of the room, bow aimed at the door.

Whoops, I ran the initiative first and then added in the attack from the guard, so the rolls in the post are a bit screwed up. Ugh.

Caliban Tre'Athkar |

Caliban quickly moves after Junior, Hang in there Junior, we are coming!
The elf enters the common room, scanning quickly, but only seeing one opponent, he conjures frost around his hand, and sends a ray of it hurtling at the mongrelman in the corner. Junior, look out!
Ranged Touch: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 - 4 = 7

Tristan stops smiling as an arrow roots itself in Junior. The Inquisitor rushes up to the lone Mongrelman.

Massielo notices that Junior has been hurt and in the heat of the moment he can't understand what the others are saying. He hurries in the next room.

Greta hurries into the room that the arrow came from and grimaces with frustration when she discovers there’s no good place for her to attack from. The warrior simply laughs off Tristan's insult, and she grins back at him.
Greta's hammer, while powerfully swung, isn't quite able to find its way through the confusing melee, and the traitor leaps just out of the way. Right into Selann's perfectly aimed blob of acid, which sizzles immediately on contact with her exposed skin.
As the party closes in, she drops her bow and pulls out a club, swinging it at Tristan's head. It connects with an audible crunch and sends the inquisitor reeling backwards. 13 damage!

Fred Junior |

uh... I just missed with a 17 on the die... any one have any suggestions for useful things I could try other than swinging in vain?
I'm inspiring rage if that matters.

Seeing that this soldier is being a handful, Massielo decides to release a burst of positive energy, while excluding the mongrelman captain.
Channel energy, not including the enemy: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Caliban Tre'Athkar |

Caliban doesn't see a line to reach the mongrelman with his sword, instead tries a different tack with the combat. He quickly incants in Draconic, ফ্লেয়ার! summoning a burst of light in front of their opponent's eyes.
Flare, Fort save DC 13 or become dazzled

Greta Gyllenhår |

I missed rage song... so with -4 from soft cover but adding +2 from raging and +1 for having higher ground, my first round attack should have hit AC 22 for 19 damage.
”Benedict, duck!” Greta calls out when she realizes that even standing on the table attacking over the priest is a challenge. She raises her hammer and waits for him to crouch for a moment before swinging.

Tristan watches--as in slow motion--the club a club! smoothly arc through the air; closing the gap between it and his face!
The Inquisitor seems to want to scream at her; but the leftovers from Greta's hammer doesn't respond.

Selann Juris |

Seeing the success of his attack, but knowing it does just a little damage, Selann tries again.
Acid Splash, ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 3 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 3 + 1 - 4 = 16 (+1 if the Bless is still active?)

Bludgeoning: 1d8 + 3 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 1 + 1 = 10
Still riding the high of his song Junior swings and misses the mongrelfolk. He takes his own advice and makes some room, stepping back.

Benedic |

Benedic swings his sword at the mongrelman.
Longsword attack, divine favor, bless, raging song: 1d20 + 3 + 2 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 3 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 24
Slashing damage, divine favor, raging song: 1d8 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 2 + 1 = 9

GM Losonti |

I believe bless was cast at the beginning of the first fight, so I think it faded out by now.
The traitor's confident demeanor evaporates in the face of the party's assault. Greta's longhammer knocks her off balance, and it's all she can do to throw up her cloak in front of her face to shield herself from the combination of Selann's acid and Caliban's flash of light. Ironically, this defensive move sets her up perfectly for a slash of Benedic's sword, and he cuts a deep gash into her leg.
Barely standing, and visibly resigned to her sudden change in fate, she nevertheless turns her eyes to Junior's retreating back.
Tristan, you still have your turn, if you'd like to take it.

GM Losonti |

Damage: 1d6 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 2 = 11
Tristan's sword, empowered by Junior's raging song, soars through the air, but she catches sight of it out of the corner of her eye at the last possible second, and leaps away from the inquisitor. This places her right next to the half-fish, half-human, half-orc skald. Knowing her time is just about up, she delivers one more powerful swing, the club crashing down onto Junior's shoulder. 11 damage

Gather around to hear the sound of my voice
Dear girls and boys well you're making a choice
You can think for yourselves
Or you can buy all my toys
Disregard mental health

Junior doesn't notice the pain much, he's focusing on singing, the magical kind that makes him wants to hit things. Often he feels guilty afterwards and he questions his life choices that led him to violence so much. Then her remembers he's a product of his environment as much as he is of his choices, his dad would be proud of the rationalizations. His mom would probably just hit him.
He chooses to take after his mom today.

Tristan de Lion |

Tristan looks at his longsword as if broken AC 22 missed?. The Inquisitor seems to blank out for about 6 seconds, while Junior and Greta finish the really resilient mongrelman.

GM Losonti |

Unfortunately, yeah. Her AC was exactly 23. I tried seeing if I could find you a +1 anywhere but wasn't able to do it.
Greta, taking advantage of the traitor's split attention, is still able to deliver the knockout blow, first with a punch to the kidneys, followed by a haymaker to the face when her target doubles over in pain. The mongrelman falls to the ground, the life fading from her body.

![]() |

Wasn't it Junior?
Massielo spends a while still combat ready, expecting another mongrelman to jump out of a hole they somehow missed. After a while he calms himself and asks "Everyone ok?" He kneels next to the captain and searches him for something of value.

GM Losonti |

Greta spent her hero point on a +4, which bumped her 19 to a 23, changing it from a miss to a hit.
Massielo's search turns up a number of items, including a masterwork chain shirt, a masterwork longbow, an obsidian unholy symbol of Baphomet (worth 20 gp), and 30 gp in currency. He also turns up 2 potions of cure light wounds, and a magical wand.
Beyond the door you entered through, there are 2 exits from this room: another door to the northeast, and a hole in the ground to the southeast, which can be descended using a shoddy looking ladder.

![]() |

Spellcraft: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Massielo says "This wand has 15 charges of longstrider in it.". He then looks inside the hole in the ground. He takes a pebble and chants an ancient word which makes it shine bright (cast light on the stone), then throws it into the darkness below.

Tristan de Lion |

Tristan grins at Junior and Greta. The youth looks down at the mongrelman leftovers. He sadly shakes his head.
The demon taint seeps deeply rooted beneath the very feet of Ioemedaen power. How has such complacency come to be? It seems the Inheritor has opened my eyes to the blatant corruption sowed here!
Tristan then searches both doors for traps; asking for Guidance.

Cure light wounds: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Junior heals his wounds, "Anyone else injured? I have a little bit of juice left."

Benedic |

Benedic frowns at the unholy symbol, murmuring a prayer under his breath as he tries to recall what he knows about its focus.
Knowledge (religion) check, guidance: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 1 = 8
I'm guessing that means he doesn't know who Baphomet is. :)

Tristan de Lion |

Almost certain Tristan previously made that Religion check to recognize Baphomet, He would have relayed that information to the group.
Tristan is down only 4hp.

Caliban Tre'Athkar |

Caliban pauses in summoning more magic to throw at the mongrelman, as the others do it in. Helping to inventory the possessions of their opponent, Caliban speaks up, Someone should take up this armor, it is of fine manufacture certainly.
Looking into the hole, Caliban grunts, I think we should begin at the bottom, but leave no stone unturned in here. Is that not the same symbol as we took off the dead cultists before we reached Neathome? I would suspect there may be an alliance between cultists posing as crusaders and these mongrelmen who reside in this complex.

![]() |

Massielo listens to Caliban and replies "I prefer heavier armor to protect myself. But you or Selann could benefit greatly from it."
Then, to the more serious question, he says "I think they may be the same group, yes. We must be extra careful with people who claim to be crusaders here."

Selann Juris |

Spellcraft: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Selann is looking over the stuff from the dead enemy when he hears his name mentioned about the armor.
"Too big for a little guy like me. Besides, I wouldn't be able to use my magic. But the wand is interesting to me! My short legs just don't move me fast enough sometimes and that would help a lot. As a druidic spell I can't use it now, but with time I might learn to trick the wand into working."
I haven't taken any ranks in UMD yet, but do plan to....
"Before we go down that ladder, shouldn't we check out these doors? I wouldn't want to start descending and have the enemy attack us from the rear, or trap us down there if it's a dead end."
"And I've heard a couple of folk say that they're about tapped out of healing magics. I've only got cantrips left to me. I wouldn't want to face a half dozen like this guy, or some big ugly monsters down this hole. Maybe we should back of to rest and recover, mainly recover.... ??"

Fred Junior |

Junior smiles at the halfling and tries to reassure him, "You worry too much Selann! If there were a bunch more you'd think they would come running with all the racket we were making. Maybe you could listen through the doors though?"
"Hey can I see that wand?"
If Selann lets him he points it Selann while saying some magic words, "Sail away, sail away, sail away."
UMD: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
