This is a thread for those with any questions in regards to GM PDK Ironfang Invasion recruitment. Players must use the stat block format described on the signup page and in the GM alias profile. Players with characters in the proper format may post them here for evaluation when ready.

Maybe I am missing the signup page. Is it not going to be in Campaign Info?

The signup page filled in like 30 minutes... Lol. At least I managed to put my name as backup. I'd love to play with a Dwarf, either Fighter or Ranger. Nothing complicated.

My Fighter is ready

More details to come tomorrow, but I've got a lovely idea for a swamp forest witch who may have gone slightly mad from living by himself in the woods for too long after escaping from Nidal. Think matted hair full of twigs and leaves, talks to himself, self-sufficient. Very strong ties to the Fangwood (as that is his home), and he'll do anything to protect it. He's also incredibly suspicious that he's still being hunted by assassins from Nidal and can't let down his guard for a second.

Mechanically, he'd be primarily a debuffer with some utility, support, and damage options mixed in. I'm also intrigued by the Campaign Guide's suggestion of the Item Crafting feats - do you have any thoughts on those, GM?

Additionally, were you planning to make use of the Militia optional system? I made a spreadsheet for tracking a rebellion for Hell's Rebels that looks quite similar to the sheet in the Player's Guide and could probably be adapted with little work to fit this campaign. Just let me know if you want it - the offer stands regardless of whether or not this character is selected for the campaign.

This is going to be in campaign mode with a more fast-paced style than usual. I'm going to focus on sanctioned content only with some parts of the AP adapted or modified to be less sandboxy and more streamlined. This is going to be more dungeon crawl than immersive roleplay experience. I will not worry about the custom survival rules for this AP or the militia subsystem for instance, and instead focus on the main plot and the sanctioned sections of each book, providing narration for the parts that have happened in the background. Basically, I've been playing this game for years and the various subsystems (Rebellion system in HR, Caravan system in JR, and Militia system in IF) just don't work in PbP. I maintained the Rebellion sheet for one of my HR tables a few years ago and it ended up being a solo GM project as the players never looked at the sheet or used the Rebels for any operations (i.e. waste of time in PbP).

So this Ironfang version starts at level 4, with some sections heavily narrated, and a focus on the dungeon parts of the sanctioned content. Just wanted to make sure this is clear before I start, as I'm looking at a 2 or 3 year AP run and not a 6-7 year 5,000 page long gameplay thread here.

Thank you.

PS: I'm going to recruit from both the blue and red list of the signup sheet, so don't let the fullness of the first 6 spots stop you from applying.

Gotcha, and no worries. Sounds like most of the time that would be spent crafting will be handwaved or narrated rather than played out. Does that mean you would prefer to not have Crafting in the campaign, or that you don't see a use for it (as players will have opportunities to purchase equipment and whatever else they might need between sanctioned sections)?

I have no preference for crafting feats. If you want to use your money with crafting feats, fine by me. But you guys start at level 4 with no crafting money on you. (i.e. gear owned at level 4 has been bought at full price)

Crafting done after campaign start will be done in off time between dungeons. I'm not going to maintain a detailed calendar for travel and such as I've played this F2F and travel minutia can become very boring real fast. If you have crafting feats we'll just assume you spent your money and time building your own items, and to hell with time keeping.

Start gold is 6,000gp for a level 4 PC.

Archlich here with my Dwarf Monk/Zen Archer. Hoping to put some arrows in some hobgoblins :)

Whoever decided to take a swashbuckler level: I absolutely hate Opportune Parry and Riposte... it has actually broken two of my campaigns so far, and I absolutely hate it in PbP. So swap the ability for something else via archetype or take another class level instead of swashbuckler. Thank you.

I can change that. I was looking at taking a martial level before going into rogue.

So, does this mean I need a Level 4 PFS character to do this, or should I build one for this? I'm not super aware of the interactions between PFS and other stuff, not having done much in the way of PFS previously.

Don't want to waste your time putting my name down if I can't meet the requirements.

This is my question as well, but if its campaign mode starting at level 4 and then I just apply the sheet across we can build a "fresh" level 4, correct?

Edit: And if this is correct, how much gold should I build with?

The Concordance

Ready for review.

Fresh 4th level with 6000gp gear.

The only PFS thing I need to know is which pfs character the chronicles will go to (download the chronicles from the ironfang product page to figure out level range for the book 1 chronicle)

The Concordance

3rd-4th level for PFS.

Ok, Swashbuckler (Veiled Blade)/Fighter (Phalanx Soldier) of Nathanael Love here.

This build uses the Phalanx Soldier's ability to turn a Polearm when used with a shield into a One Handed weapon and Speardancing Spiral (and Shield Trained) to Weapon Finesse with the Halberd/Spiked Shield for two weapon fighting.

Eventually the build continues to invest feats into things like Nimble Moves and Stand Still to be a high AC/battlefield control build.

Per request I swapped out Opportune Parry & Riposte with Veiled Blade- Swashbuckler is primarily in the buil for the Weapon Finesse ability and skill (Acrobatics + Perception Class Skills).

Jestyn wrote:

Thanks Jestyn. For those not too familiar with PFS, this means you'll be able to give credit to any 3rd or 4th level PFS toon you have (if they're not 3rd level yet, you can wait until they get there before you 'apply' the chronicle to them, so you won't lose anything)

Dex 30? also isn't the Spear Dancing thing meant in two handed mode? (double weapon type of style?) what is the effect of holding on to a shield instead of the intended off-hand end? hmmm...

Hornbow requires exotic proficiency yes?

GM PDK wrote:

Dex should be 20, the 3 was a typo.

And yes- the first Spear Dancing Style feat does have the effect to allow the spear to be used as a double weapon.

The second feat (Spear Dancing Spiral) specifically enables weapon finesse with the weapon + calls out that you can use it for any feat or ability that specifically requires a quarterstaff.

(This bit becomes important later as it let's me take Perfect Strike, among other abilities)

The third feat (Spear Dancing Reach) let's me use a swift action to give the weapon reach for the turn- which powers up the Stand Still I eventually take because Halberd doesn't standard have reach.

GM, what is meaning of black bold, red bold and green cell in class column of your spreadsheet?

My alias should be updated to meet your requirements PDK. I have a bit of money left from my starting equipment - going to fill up with miscellaneous adventuring gear (not sure what yet).

I think it’s a Hero Lab oversight and it should require. I’ll change it to a regular composite longbow. I believe the fact hornbows work as composite longbows is what messed up with HL.

Nothing at all... :P

Hi GM, I am finalizing the Brawler Wild Child now! Does the character have to fulfill any background requirements? I could use any RP links when I select traits, feats etc.

Thanks

Ding dong, the witch is here! Herman's a twitchy sort of fellow who sleeps with one eye open, but that shouldn't stop you from looking through his character sheet. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have, GM, or for any feedback you think might help the character fit the campaign better.

A question: I've currently selected the Hedge Magician trait, as it fits more smoothly with his backstory than my second choice (Pragmatic Activator), and would be quite handy on someone who creates things using the Crafting rules. Would you allow this, or should I swap in his second choice for that trait slot?

Another question: Herman's archetype (Herb Witch) locks him into the Cauldron hex as his second-level choice. The hex grants a +4 insight bonus to Craft (alchemy) checks - however, the archetype locking him into this hex allows him to use Profession (herbalist) in place of Craft (alchemy). Would you allow this hex to transfer its bonus from Craft (alchemy) to Profession (herbalist)?

Absolutely! that +4 applies to Prof Herb as well by virtue of the Herb Lore (Ex) skill. It applies to both, as far as I'm concerned, and it wouldn't be a bad idea if you take Craft Alchemy to have a knowledge of poisons as well (so that you can create better cures! ...or harvest some forest monsters for their venom sacs! :) )

As you can see in Ultimate Wilderness, there are several instances where both Profession Herbalist and Craft Alchemy is advantageous:

Herbalism

Herbs

Love the background story! feel free to make another avatar for the bunny! :)

Awesome! That makes that hex much more attractive! I'm curious though - the Herb Lore class feature allows Herman to use Profession (herbalist) anytime a Craft (alchemy) check would be needed, correct?

Yes.. I now realize there's no point to have Craft Alchemy for you! :P

Ref. Crafting feats and traits: yes they are allowed.

There are suggestions in the player's guide to ironfang; check out the Paizo site.

Hmm, that Witch build makes the Alchemist I was working on kind of redundant. Not sure the group would need both. Might have to rethink that. When are you looking to pick the roster GM PDK?

Not sure. Will play it by ears. There are already some very excellent submissions.

Ok, I'm limited to my phone and it's not letting me update this direct to the profile, so I'll post the updated background here:

background:
Born and raised in a small village on the Southern Nirmathi border, Arthur, then known only as Dale, was only 12 years old when his village was wiped out by a band of hobgoblin and goblins. The last thing he remembered of his homeland was his mother being killed by a hobgoblin captain with one eye while he watched from a hidden compartment. Before hiding him away, she had told him to find his older brother Timofey who was away fighting as a Nirmathi Ranger and pressed a holy symbol of Gorum into his hands.

Yet, being on the border, the lone child would not be rescued by Nirmathi troops. The first Army on the scene of the massacre to take in the few survivors was a Molthune regiment. Dale would not see his homeland again for nearly ten years.

Pressed into service as a slave soldier, Dale, given the Molthune name of Arturious quickly combined the rudimentary sword and shield training he had started at the village with the precision of the Molthune phalanx and distinguished himself in combat. After five years, Arturious was a free man and Molthune citizen, though still a soldier of Molthune.

Still the desire to return to his homeland and fight for the righteous side burned in his breast, the Holy symbol of a god he almost remembered hung round his neck beneath the Imperial colors of his enemy nation. When his unit was sent into Cheliax to a skirmish, Arturious took his chance.

As the battle went against his unit, Dale, now Arturious ran, leaving them to be slaughtered by the Chelaxian troops and their unholy allies. Now a deserter, he spent some time in Cheliax, before crossing back into Molthune and seeking refuge at the Palace of Virtue. Now known as Brother Arthur, he stayed 3 years with the monks there.

Finally, after the strange cold winter disrupted the area, Arthur knew he needed to return. Crossing secretly back into Nirmathis, and taking the name Arthur Alaval he finally enlisted in the Nirmathi Irregulars and began to hunt for his brother from whom he was separated a decade prior.

Great background Arthur!

@Everyone: I'll need you all to commit to a PFS Character number before considering your application complete. Feel free to create a new PFS character on the Paizo site whom you can later apply all the Ironfang Chronicles towards if you are unsure which existing character to pick right now. I also need you guys to use the sample format which includes the BBcodes due to my eyesight, as I've mentioned to some of you. Finally, if you wish for the GM to also have fun along with you, a character background story is where it's at... ;)

Backstory done and PFS Character number done.

Thank you! does Luke have some type of archetype or regular fighter?

Thank you! don't forget to add the animal companion stats in a spoiler tag in this character's profile as well as a background story, if you have one. Please also create an alias for the animal companion as it may come in handy at times with so many pets around! :)

Herman might be able to use another skill in place of Craft (alchemy), but that doesn't mean he's the only one who can. And during violent encounters, he's a debuffer rather than a damage dealer (as most alchemists tend to be). So the two builds aren't mutually exclusive or competing for the same spot in a group.

At this point, I feel like we have a solid gang which could pose a serious resistance against the hobgoblin invasion! :)

RECRUITMENT CLOSED

Could the following characters please report to the Gameplay thread please: (DOT AND DELETE ONLY PLEASE)

Fizzlewumpit Rumpwoggle
Grenwold Houtvester
Luke Redwood
Herman the Reclusive
Dommer Bouldercrush
Jestyn
Arthur Alaval

Thank you for all applications! feel free to leave your character details on the list of Backup Players if you have not been chosen at this time. A campaign with this many players is bound to have a drop out or two along the way! such is the nature of adventure paths!

PS: I will need some of you to finalize PFS character number and background story before we get going. The campaign will start on June 24th.

Thanks a lot. Contact me anytime if someone drops out! :-)

Well that solves that problem. Have fun.

@Fizzlewumpit: Please choose now. You have to lock this in before I start this. Thanks.

@Everyone: don't forget my one post per day rule; if you can't commit to this I am subject to grant your spot to someone else, as per the signup page guidelines I provided at the beginning. I have chosen the current players above the other applicants based on my initial perception on how participative the selected players are, but if your circumstances have changed and you no longer think you can keep up with this campaign, don't hesitate to let us know and we will fill up your spot with someone else. Until the group is done with the troglodyte caves I am subject to bring a new player without warning or justification if I believe certain players are dragging their feet. I want active players for this as I don't want this AP to drag for years and years. Thank you for your understanding everyone.

IMPORTANT: since this is an OSP game, I will report Book 1 and 2 before the end of 2020 as I am not sure what is happening with OSP after December 31st. I'll try to get more info on that. Just to be safe though, please PM me your email address if you wish to enter a chance to receive a player OSP boon for this game. OSP boons are rolled randomly by the OSP organizers and emailed directly to the recipients.

PM me your email address if you care for the possibility of an OSP boon.
