I'll double check. I believe that is the way hero lab is set up for me.
Aersten Vidsun |
Hadn't even realized that was a setting, but now it's set! Thanks for letting me know!
The Sapphire Bullet |
And here I am doing all the math myself like a sucker.
Aersten Vidsun |
Only ELL...
Meant to ask, what's ELL? English Language L-something, I got myself that far. :)
Hedwig Bogg II |
Lol, that is sad.

The Sapphire Bullet wrote:Only ELL...Meant to ask, what's ELL? English Language L-something, I got myself that far. :)
English Language Learner.
Refers to the student, but basically the same as:
• ESL (English as a Second Language)
• ELD (English Language Development)
• ELE (English Language Education)
• EL (English Learner)
• Ell (same as ELL but with lowercase L’s)
I’m actually partial to ESL, but to be fair, some of my students have English as their 6th language. (Bad example since the acronym still works, but you get the idea.)
Master of the Seas and Storms |
Oh, please don’t start flinging poop around...
I have (IRL) a fairly extreme aversion to anything poop related.
Master of the Seas and Storms |
Lol, fine... but only once in a while and with as little description as possible.
The Sapphire Bullet |
My first bad GM experience (me as GM, I mean) involved having cycloptic apes fling feces. Of course the only player offended by it was one of the two whose PC got hit. His samurai stormed out of the burning building and took a bath. (Rage-quit.) It probably didn’t help that I had cartoon versions of the PCs, NPCs and scenery, so I photoshopped brown spatters on the characters’ heads and made up a condition called ‘sh*t-faced.’
Hedwig Bogg II |
Paddy, as a gm, once attacked me with evil demonic testicles. The description of the sperm maggots still haunts me. :)
Jerk the Monkey |
One of my best combat encounters to date. Definitely the most memorable. I don't know what the heck I was smoking that day, but I need more of it. The unborn demon baby with the healing umbilical cord was also fantastic.
Hedwig Bogg II |
That is awesome! My son plays with my group from high school, though recent pandemic and well general life has kept that from happening at all.
The encounter starts as tentacles, but someone can't spell, and with the aid of spellcheck said testicles instead, inspiring Paddy in a truly amazing way.
And personally, I believe Dony has some great stories to tell from online games. No testicles though :)
Hedwig Bogg II |
I've got to buy some alchemist formulas and look at some of the special loads for her gun but otherwise...
Where does everyone want to go next? Our first mate has fished out a rumor a sunken ship and there is always straight piracy. Hedy wishes to go piracy to see what we're all capable of, but that is just my vote. As always every player can have a say. Hedy can have a change of heart pretty easily.
Aersten Vidsun |
I'm not quite sure how to pull that off, do we have any salvage experience? I'm not averse to it, but for Aersten the answer is really whatever he feels would earn his bones with the Captain, so leaning toward straight piracy.
Padrym "Paddy" the Dwarf |
Paddy would see treasure in both options, so he's good either way!
Hedwig Bogg II |
I believe piracy will carry it then. If the sunken ship is still on the table once we are done (and still alive) we can always go after it as well.
Hedy will purchase 10 heavy crossbows(and bolts), as well as silk sails for the ship. And a spyglass. Next pounty selling I'll remember to take a share out for the ship, and pay Hedy back so she doesn't fall behind too much in equipment.
So quick change sails, silk sails, wide rudder, smuggler's compartment, 1 heavy ballista (along with the light and heavy we already had), 10 heavy crossbows and a full complement of pirates. I believe the Talon is ready to kill something.
Master of the Seas and Storms |
I updated the officer/crew spreadsheet to include the ship upgrades; I'll try to start filling in the new crew today. A reminder: with the now larger crew, you have also opened up 2 additional junior officer positions that you can fill. Hedy passed on the freebie healer, so if you want to recruit a new surgeon/healer someone will have to track one down and try to recruit them specifically (likely a 2 day process- 1 to gather info to find them and 1 to actually recruit); Unless I'm mistaken, Murillo, Paddy, Hedy, and Saph have all used up 2 weeks worth of actions already (Murillo and Paddy selling plunder and Hedy and Saph gaining infamy and recruiting general crew), so you'd either have to task one or both of the new officers with doing it during the second week in port or else add a couple extra days to the stay to do it afterwards? If you do bring someone on in that role, that would fill one of the two junior officer slots. The other one could be filled by promoting someone who's already helpful (a current crew member), or by identifying someone in port you want to individually recruit for it (which again would either have to be delegated to the new folks or add extra time). Please let me know what you'd like to do.
Oh, and where are you positioning your ballistae?
The Sapphire Bullet |
Wow... the new officers are put through a tougher test than Paddy and Saph! (I did consider her Draconic diplomacy with the lizardfolk to be an extension of the test, however.)
Aersten Vidsun |
Jesus, I think I'd rather go another few rounds with you. Right now I am literally fighting back the urge to bury a hammer in that dude's temple, and he's a fictional character.
Hedwig Bogg II |
Hedy treated you and Paddy as red shirts to kill lizardmen, and you LIVED! so test passed.
Azadi is a good carpenter so please don't kill him. Don't have to be nice to him though, not a requirement in the least.
Aersten Vidsun |

Yeah I opened with nice, and Azadi took that option off the table right quick. Won't kill him, but he's definitely off my Christmas Card list. :)

I’m picturing us all on deck one night, gathered around a table, Aersten blowing out candles on a cake. Paddy’s leading the crew to sing Happy Birthday, Saph’s uncorking the champagne... and in the storage compartment, there’s Azadi frowning on a crate hugging his knees muttering, “I don’t care.” A single tear rolls down his cheek as he overhears Hedy declare Aersten’s ‘Big Two-One Bash’ the best birthday party ever. She always says that when she’s drunk, even when it’s nobody’s birthday, but still… right there’s the moment Azadi wishes he could turn back the clock.
Master of the Seas and Storms |
Lol (@Saph).
The irony is that Murillo really dislikes Azadi, so this test is actually going pretty well for our new recruit! Although, 'started nice' might be a little strong... you certainly weren't a jerk, but you did kind of command the master carpenter to stop doing his job and answer to you.
I see that nobody has addressed the 2 open junior officer spots yet... I'm working on filling out the new crew on the roster and right now I'm doing so with the assumption that someone is going to recruit 1 new officer (probably some kind of healer?) and that 1 new officer will be promoted from the ranks (possibly a bosun or sailing master, or maybe an assistant master gunner to supervise the foredeck, if you don't give that job to Aersten). If you don't want to do it that way, that's fine- I'll just have to drop or add a new crew member to compensate.
The Sapphire Bullet |
Unless Annie the Random Woman on the Street is a healer, I don’t see Saph recruiting her. Maybe after the date if nobody’s recruited a healer by then.
Or during the date, if one of those ‘is there a doctor in the house?’ situations comes up at the restaurant. (And… there’s a doctor in the house.)
Master of the Seas and Storms |
Saph- the date is taking place close to the 1 week mark, but you're actions are (unless I'm mistaken) used up until day 14 on assisting Hedy. So, in order to recruit another officer, either someone (probable Hedy or Murillo) would have to task Aerin and/or Aersten with doing it during week 2, or else you'll have to tag an extra couple days on to the end of your time in port so that some combination of you/Hedy/Murillo/Paddy can do it.
Padrym "Paddy" the Dwarf |
How about we raid our next victim and take their doctor?
Master of the Seas and Storms |
The roster has officially been updated. Feel free to include any of the new recruits in future RP, and to task those officers with available days/checks to start trying to influence them if you want.
@Paddy- that could work, but only if they have a healer you want and who survives the attack (not all ships have magical healers)
The Sapphire Bullet |
@GM, it’s not super important yet, but let me know if my interpretation of the gloves (in THIS post) is correct: particularly that (1) I don’t need to accompany my secret message with spoken words, just hand motions, and (2) that there’s a six-second/one-round delay.
(I only am mindful of the delay because another character of mine has a vigilante talent that lets her pass secret message via bluff skill without a one-round delay.)
Augustus Murillo |
If no one objects ooc, I'm thinking Murillo will provisionally name Aersten as bo'sun pending Captain's approval.

Shoot... apparently I need to finish stating out Azadi.
Murillo, you might need to wait and make sure he survives until dinner before you appoint him to anything.
Master of the Seas and Storms |
@Aersten- I noticed your last PM after posting, but have replied now. Your post seems to be moving in the direction you were looking for, but Feel free to edit it if the PM changes anything for you. I’ll wait a little while before I post to give you a chance to change it if you want.
Hedwig Bogg II |
Hedy approves the posting as Murillo knows much more about sailing than she does (though she did put a point into the skill now that she is captain, one should know something about sailing)
The Sapphire Bullet |

1 rank in sailing because, when sailing, the cap’n is ranked #1!
Aersten Vidsun |
(though she did put a point into the skill now that she is captain, one should know something about sailing)
Of course that one rank almost has you matched up with me and I spent five ranks. O_o Some days it doesn't pay to boot up Hero Lab.

Oh. I thought I only rolled the 9 days at sea. But no worries. It sounds like Aerin might be our best bet for finding a doctor on the island, so I’ll just hold out until the fluff RP continues.
Maybe in the pirate world it makes sense to murder people and welcome their doctor aboard, but I wouldn’t trust a doctor with my wounded, unconscious body after killing people he may have cared about.
Hedwig Bogg II |
I did not include anyone aiding Hedy on the recruitment rolls. I did on the infamy rolls, so those days should be eaten up but not the others.
Padrym "Paddy" the Dwarf |
I was just thinking about how it seemed to have been done in the pirate age. I think if there wasn't a doctor, the cook would work double duty, and if not the cook, then the carpenter.
And by 'welcome their doctor aboard', I think it was more along the lines of 'come with me if you want to live'.
The Sapphire Bullet |
it was more along the lines of 'come with me if you want to live'.
It sounded so much sweeter when Kyle Reese said that to Sarah Connor.
