Marioc calls out to the slaves "You don't have to run! You're safe!" but doesn't follow them as they ignore him. After renewing his watery defense and telling Master Kylan he is fine, he is ready to move on.

"Kylan, do you see anything in either of the tunnels leading from this cave? If not, let's check out the tunnel to your right."

That should be the south one.


The south tunnel open up into a large cavern filled with stalactites and stalagmites. A crevasse in the ceiling leads upwards into the smoke-filled foundry room where the undead chain dwarf had been. The sound of dripping water echoes back and forth, leaving the chamber damp, but otherwise uninteresting, and nothing swoops in to attack you.

Turning about, you enter the north tunnel, which winds and twists in a generally northwest direction, opening into a mediumish cavern. The walls and floor of this chamber are covered with a semi-transparent slippery gray slime that resembles mucous. Two narrow tunnels lead south out of this cave, while a flight of steps leads up to the north.

Three of the disgusting toad creatures move about this room. One has no rider, while a second has a dead kobold still stuck to its back, it’s skull clearly caved in. The third, currently hopping along the western wall ten feet up, has a kobold rider, very much alive, clad in black leather.

Perception DC 20:
The kobold sees you at the same time you see it. It’s first glance is down to a small pile of gear sitting on the stairs leading north. You notice a battered hunting horn among the food and water supplies.

The bolt goes wide as his creature lurches along the wall towards a small pile of gear sitting on the north stairs. The other two creatures fire globs of back slime, one at Batu, the other Oryn. Both globs go astray.

Everybody is up. Currently, only Batu and Oryn can see anything, so you’ll need to move into the room before engaging in fighting or attempting the spoiler. The entire floor is slippery: treat it like a permanent grease spell with a DC of 13.

After hearing a crossbow get fired, Marioc steps in and immediately starts slipping. Still, he tries to walk slowly to try and compensate.

Seems to be something off with your numbers. By my read, your attack roll should be 2 (BAB) + 4 (Dex) +1 (elemental overflow) -1 (Deadly Aim) for +6 total. (There’s also Edgrin’s inspire courage boosting that to +7. Damage looks fine, though with another +1 from Edgrin.

Kineticists are proficient with light armour and Batu wears a chain shirt, so why the attack penalty?


Marioc, despite his slippery stance, nails the kobold with his ice ray, eliciting a grunt of pain. Batu summons stone and caves in a toad skull with it, leaving you just two toads up and about.

The kobold rider returns fire at Marioc. A crossbow bolt slams into his shoulder with excruciating pain.

Attack: 1d20 + 9 - 1 ⇒ (11) + 9 - 1 = 19
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

The kobold rider and toad arrive at the pile of equipment. The other toad spits back slime at Marioc.

Marioc is now entangled and needs to make a DC 13 Reflex save or be stuck to the (unnaturally slippery) floor.

Hey! No fair! You gotta make the Perception check first! However, the point is moot…

Batu’s stone flies true and knocks the kobold senseless. The toads continue their attack, but even though some of you may get covered in sticky goo in the process, the creatures are unlikely to seriously hurt you, and you are able to defeat them.

Without direction to attack, they’re just going to keep shooting you with sticky goo, so skipping ahead as you bravely vanquish the disgusting toads.

The pile of gear is a hunting horn, some dried rations you wouldn’t eat if you were dying, what must be toad food, and a disgusting bedroll covered in toad slime. The kobold itself is carrying a potion of cure moderate wounds and a +1 darkwood light crossbow along with 10 8 bolts.

This chamber has a passage in the southwest wall and the stairs leading up out of the north.

While the footing is uncertain, Rao is wearing a small smile as he carefully navigates the area. The smile dims slightly as he realizes that this bedroll and pile may have been someone else that was sent or lost.

"Who else was missing?", he asked of the group, not especially remembering anyone that they were tasked to look for directly.

Oryn inspects the gear and replies "Perhaps it belonged to that slaver we just vanquished, who knows? The crossbow looks nice. We can sell it unless someone can use it. Anyone interested in this crossbow?"

As he continues to look through the pile, he adds "This potion looks to be of a healing sort. You look like you might be able to benefit from it Marioc."

Oryn hands the potion to Marioc, looks to the north and continues "Those stairs may lead us closer to finding any remaining children. Edgrin do you have any idea how many kids we still need to find?"

Kylan rested his hands on Marioc and golden green healing radiance flowed from Kylan to sink into Marioc to heal 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 1) + 6 = 9 and also inflicting 1 burn and 3 nonlethal damage on Marioc as well.


"Just the one: Hollin, and I would be happy to take the crossbow. With you lot flinging elemental magic everywhere, I could use something better than these kobold javelins. Any of you lot think it was weird that there just happens to be one person in this group for each classic magical element, plus, whatever it is you do," he adds, waving at Kylan. "Like, what are the odds?"


North it is. Although the description clearly states that the stairs go up, the map says otherwise, so I guess they actually go down. His gear must have been at the top of the stairs then.

In any event, you traverse the stairs and find yourself at a 4 way-stop. Batu and Edgrin both hear sounds of movement from the passage straight ahead, while the passages to either side are dead silent.

Batu holds up hand to halt the others. "There is someone - or something - straight ahead. Let us investigate." He then continues onward, attempting to remain as quiet as possible.

Batu creeps forward, peering into a kobold den. 14 kobolds, two of them officer types stand in ready positions along the back wall with javelins at the ready. They don’t notice Batu peering in, but they can’t help but see the glow from Rao’s light giving you away, and they’re clearly ready for you to come down that corridor. There’s a passage out the northwest end and another around the corner in the southwest area.


Okay, I've done the map the best I can. With there being so many kobolds, I went with numbers rather than pictures, except for the two officer types. They'll be hard to move around, so if you do decide to attack them, it'd help me out a lot if you'd just kill a bunch of them right off before things get messy.

Marioc notices the group of kobolds ready to defend their ground. The sailor raises his hands and says "We don't really have to fight." In reality the last encounter with the frogs and the slippery ground left him a little sick of fighting.

"Marioc of the Sea raises a good point. There are so many of them. And it really looks like they are waiting for us. Do any of you think they will actually be willing to talk?"


Edgrin shakes his head. ”They’ve been quite fanatical up to now, and that’s when they’ve been outnumbered. I sincerely doubt that they’d be willing to talk now that they’re in a position of strength. Batu said there’s another way in from the southwest: perhaps a pincer maneuver would help us. Or we could try a hit and run approach, and lure them back to one of these bottlenecks.”

Oryn says as he looks over at Kylan hoping that he will continue to use his green healing light on those in trouble.

Marioc is a little annoyed at trying to think of ways to kill the kobolds. Still, being there no other way, he says "I think we should try to lure them out, break their defenses. I could make the floor slippery too if we try to storm them."

Raising a hand way to excitedly, "I shall be the one that goes to the southwest." He then proceeds in said direction.

Batu heads off down the unexplored passageway while the rest of you prepare to storm the kobolds’ main lair.

Unfortunately, Batu makes it as far as I’ve moved him when a pair of hideous, inhuman shrieks cry out from the passage just ahead of him. The shrieks are very loud and Oryn and the others can hear the kobolds up ahead quickly altering their positions.

Rao visibly jumps at the shrieks, not expecting something like that, and then mentally berating himself for being startled like that. As that sound was something that none of them were expecting, he immediately started pulling the fire close to him, and began stalking in that direction. Setting everything on fire sounded like a sensible solution.

"Let's not get distracted, hm?", he said as he passed the others.


Moving past Batu, Rao sees a corridor junction. The rock here is damp and has given host to many sorts of fungus, especially to a pair of three-foot tall purple mushrooms that are the source of the shrieking.

If you want to take them out, Rao and Batu both need to make two DC 11 Fort saves. Take 1d4 sonic damage for each one you fail, and need to make the save again or take by another 1d4 damage. We’ll assume you take only 1 round to kill them.

If you prefer to leave them and go back the way you came, no saves or damage.

"Well, this idea did not pan out as well as I'd hoped. Let us return to the others, Rao Redflame, and simply attack them from the front." Batu then proceeds to head back.

Rao lets the embers dissipate with a scattering of fire petals, and likewise returns. At least there was that reassurance that nothing would be coming from that direction. One avenue of approach was good.

As they returned, Rao gave a cavalier shrug. "I had no idea that mushrooms could scream like that."


You head back to the others, then make your move into the kobolds' den. You see that your efforts haven't been completely fruitless: unable to know if the screams stopped because you retreated or because you killed the mushrooms, the kobold commanders have divided their forces to watch both access points, halving the initial volley of javelins coming your way.
