Batu "The Rock" |
You mean somebody has TWO rings sitting in their pocket?! Well that sounds like to me those rings are serving the team PRETTY WELL sitting in somebody's pocket. I mean, what good is a ring if all you're going to do is just wear it and have it aid you in any way? That's just silly. ;)
Batu can't help but smile at Jurin. "We are not here to capture you, sir, we are here to help you. And none of us will be eating you, I can assure you of that, nor will we be doing any type of ritual either. You are free to go," he declares, nodding.
Marioc of the Sea |
@Batu: If I recall correctly these rings suppress our bending, so...
Marioc takes a while to stop trembling from the combat with the undead dwarf. He takes the warhammer, even though he doesn't know how to use it, only to clean it summoning cleaning water. The harrowing fight left the sailor a little shaken and he can't even bring himself to talk to the boy.
Nazard |
Only if you wear a ring of the wrong element. Batu and Kylan will want the earth and aether rings respectfully. I'm just hoping that the discovery of the fire ring will give folks an in-game motivation to think about handing them out. Now all that's left to do is find the water ring...
The boy coughs up more smoke. "Thanks. There were others with me. Did you rescue any of them?"
"We're here," Kimi pipes up, walking over to hold his hand. "Everybody except Hollin, anyway. Kobolds got him during our escape, him and Edgrin's friend. We gotta go find them. You up for it?"
"No, but there's not much choice is there. I'm not leaving without Hollin."
Jurin is injured from smoke inhalation, rather than wounds. He's at 0 hp. The other kids and Edgrin also have injuries and a bunch of you have a lot of burn to consider. You've explored this entire level except for the room that is barred from the outside in two places, leaving you just the pit to descend down into the next level. I'll also remind you that you know that the kobolds wanted the children for some sort of sacrificial ritual that would presumably take time to carry out.
Oryn Goldenstalk |
Oryn looks at the boy and wishes he had some more of the sweets he gave to Kimi before he responds "Hi there, my name is Oryn. We came looking for lost children of the orphanage. We will rescue all the children we find here. We met quite of few people in Falcon's Hollow. If you tell us your name, we will bring you back to your father."
Nazard |
"I'm Jurin Kreed. My father owns Falcon's Hollow. You'll get your reward for saving me, but we're not leaving without Hollin. And the orphanage children died years ago. There aren't any here."
The only reason you went to the burned-down orphanage is because you learned the town children likely went there first, so you could pick up their trail.
Marioc of the Sea |
If we find the water ring, will we be able to summon Captain Planet?
That orphanage brings sad memories. As does the werewolf after. Damn, this is a dark campaign.
Marioc looks at Jurin and says "Don't worry, we'll find Hollin." Turning to the others, he says "Do you need a minute?" He, himself, would love to rest, but he wants to show strength and fortitude to the child.
Master Kylan |
"I can heal ye, if'n ye accept the burn." Offered Kylan to everyone.
Heals Jurin: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 4) + 6 = 11 as well as gives 1 burn and 3 points nonlethal damage.
Heals Edgrin: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 5) + 6 = 15 as well as gives 1 burn and 3 points nonlethal damage.
Heals Boy 1: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 3) + 6 = 15 as well as gives 1 burn and 3 points nonlethal damage.
Heals Boy 2: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 5) + 6 = 17 as well as gives 1 burn and 3 points nonlethal damage.
The healing energy also removes the Sickened condition, if any.
Batu "The Rock" |
In thought to Marioc's question, Batu looks around at the band of many and sees the weariness in practically all of them, including himself. "I believe if we are able, we should rest. Many of us are wounded and could very well use the rest to heal said wounds."
Rao Redflame |
Trying to resist coughing from the smoke in this place, Rao was intrigued by the jewelry that the... creature wore. While a cursory glance was given to the attire of individuals that he interacted with, that jewelry caught his eye and that was strange.
"The... Smith had a ring, correct? It speaks to me."
That statement was said with a frown, almost confused at such a thing.
Master Kylan |
"If you don't mind Kylan, I could use some additional healing. Thanks in advance."
Kylan moves up to Oryn.
"O' course lad." Said Kylan as he put his hands over him.Healing blast: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 2) + 6 = 9 healed, as well as gives 1 burn and 3 points nonlethal damage. It also removes the Sickened condition, if any.
Nazard |
Kirin protests that they can’t wait, but any attempt on his own part to head towards that shaft leaves him doubled over coughing and wheezing. He eventually gives in to the logic of it all.
Anybody want to rest inside the barricaded room? Just kidding.
You pass an uneventful night at the mouth of the shaft and wake rested and fully restored (assuming Kylan used healing on everybody before sleeping).
A heavy chain hangs from a crude but solid pulley system and descends 30 feet into the shaft, ending at a large steel cauldron. You could raise the cauldron and use it to descend one at a time, or shimmy down the chain (Climb DC 10) or scale down the shaft wall itself (Climb DC 20).
Of course, somebody has some slippers of spider climbing...
Marioc of the Sea |
Waking up refreshed and in a good mood, Marioc comments on the cauldron saying "Well, then, I can fill this with water and Rao can make it boil. We might end up making a good meal with this!" Of course, this doesn't help anyone in climbing down. But since he has no good ideas at the moment, and isn't strong enough to hold the cauldron's chain, he thought that he should lighten the mood.
Batu "The Rock" |
Smiling, "Never fear, Master Kylan! We will simply raise the cauldron and do this the safe way! Better safe than sorry I always say!" he says with a laugh. "Okay, okay, that's not really true. But I should say that more often because those are wise words. Anyway, off we go!" Batu then starts using the pulley to bring the cauldron up.
Marioc of the Sea |
Marioc answers Oryn shortly saying "Maybe whoever is last can use those slippers to walk down the well." He hope Oryn realizes he isn't offering himself.
Rao Redflame |
The night of rest let Rao feel better, but he could tell that he was not quite as strong as he had been. At least it was not as much of a hindrance as it had been, and that was reassuring. As the others were discussing which order to descend, he was finishing his ration— some decadent thing of dried and pressed fruit with nuts set into a half trencher of quality grains. The waterskin was in his other hand, and he took a couple of swallows to wash down the remainder.
A yawn was stifled as he came over to look down the hole. He took a deep breath, and let it out slowly before giving a half grin. "I'm slowly getting used to this life of danger and impending death... That can't be healthy."
Laughing softly, he went back to get his things.
Oryn Goldenstalk |
Oryn volunteers to go first.
Looking around at the trepidation of the group, Oryn speaks up "I will go first. I would like Kylan to go second, in case something bad is down there, he can mend my wounds. Does that sound good to you Kylan?"
Nazard |
”Might I make a suggestion?” Edgrin asks, then continues without waiting for permission. ”That one of us wear the slippers of spider climb and walk down the shaft wall at the same time somebody is lowered in the cauldron, then send the slippers back up with the cauldron, so that we’re descending in pairs?”
Batu "The Rock" |

Looking over at Rao with a smile, "Do not think of it as 'danger and death' Rao Redflame, think of it as 'excitement and adventure'! A journey to experience that of which you have never experienced! What greater treasure could there be than that?" he tells him, giving him a friendly pat on the shoulder.
"A fine plan indeed! Here," he proceeds to take off the slippers, "one of you take these. I will pair up with whoever is last. Or simply go down by myself. It matters not," he states matter of factly.
Rao Redflame |
The sound of rustling equipment can be heard along with a small grunt as Rao prepares to go down the hole. "Any idea how deep it is? I don't fancy attempting a climb with this stuff on my back, could it be lowered in the cauldron?" The ring that the smith had worn was on his index finger like a signet ring, while his clothing was certainly worse off than when they had started, stained and dirtied.
Nazard |
It's only 30 feet down. We have Oryn first in the elevator with Edgrin using slippers, then Kylan in the cauldron with Marioc using slippers, then the kids in the cauldron, then Rao in the cauldron with Batu climbing down afterwards. The two kobolds climb down on their own with Oryn and Edgrin. Of course, that assumes your descent goes smoothly, which it most certainly does not.
The shaft drops down into a large, mostly square chamber. A doorway opens in one wall, while two other walls have been broken through from the outside. Cramped, narrow tunnels beckon from beyond the breached walls.
Oryn steps out of the cauldron and Batu and others begin to haul it back up. Looking around, what he first assumed to be bumps or bulges in the walls quickly reveal themselves to be strange toad-like creatures clinging to the walls 15 feet off the floor. The toads secrete some sort of ooze and grease and both have a kobold rider.
Surprise Round
Both toads shoot some sort of ooze out of nodules on their backs. One aims for Oryn, the other Edgrin.
Touch attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Touch attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Both of you are coated with this ooze, which quickly hardens as it slops over you and the floor. You are entangled, and need to make a Reflex save DC 13 or be stuck to the floor. You can opt to take a full-round action making a DC 15 Strength check to remove the chitinous shell, or just deal with the penalty and get rid of it later.
Edgrin Reflex: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Although those of you above can see that some sort of goo has just sprayed Oryn, the angle of the ceiling means you can't see what attacked him. For options, I'll remind you that a DC 10 Acrobatics check means that you would only take 2d6 of falling damage if you decided to jump down. You also have the snapleaf you found in the witch's hut, which would allow one person to gain feather fall and invisibility (but then it's gone).
Initiative:
Batu: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Marioc: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Master Kylan: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Oryn: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Rao: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Edgrin: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Foes: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
The two kobold riders each fling a javelin at Oryn.
Javelin: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Javelin: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Edgrin flings a javelin back at red rider.
Javelin: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Party is up.
Marioc of the Sea |
Seeing trouble, Marioc decides to jump down. He does a very awkward jump down the well, trying to land safely.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
So with that great roll, do I manage to reduce the damage a little bit more?
Marioc falls on the floor with a thumb and gets up.
Guess that's my round.
Oryn Goldenstalk |
Oryn yells out with the covering of the goo "Yuck! What is this stuff? Watch out! There are things down here."
Reflex DC 13: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
Oryn spends a few seconds and attempts to remove the hardening goo that covers him.
Strength Check DC 15: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
With the vile stuff removed, Oryn begins to find himself a target for an air blast.
Batu "The Rock" |
Hearing the warning from Oryn, Batu immediately leaps over the side and lands solidly, yet also breaks his ankle but he doesn't let that deter him. :)
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25 Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 6) = 9
AC 20; Hp's 31/42(2 NL)
Rao Redflame |
Left standing around the hole with the Kirin and the others while the rest have jumped down, Rao simply sets his pack on the floor, and lets out a long sigh, sinking down on his heels in a squat, and resting his head on his pack. Lifting his head, he could not help but give a shake of disbelief.
"Quick, if you can escape from this place, you may not contract this madness that has infected us all", he commented dryly.

Rao will be attempting to descend next turn via Climbing. Is the chain anchored, or will the next round be spent attempting to secure it.?
Nazard |
The kids rush to grab the chain as Batu and Marioc take the plunge. They haul the cauldron up so that Kylan can climb inside it.
As Batu and Marioc scramble to their (now quite sore) feet, the kobolds give their toad mounts a kick, and they scramble down the walls. Once they hit the floor, the begin to glide on their bellies, crossing in front of Oryn as they target the newcomers with full on body slams. As they glide, they leave a trail of slippery slime.
The toad creatures are attempting to overrun Batu and Marioc. You can choose to let them pass you, or resist, in which case they may succeed in knocking you down or be stopped short. Let me know which option you prefer. The map has been updated assuming you either let them pass or they succeed in knocking you down. The orange rectangles show the area of grease, which may or may not require a Reflex save from you, depending on what you chose to do.
Whichever option you choose, their riders swing their flying talon daggers at you as they pass (or don't). Neither of them hit.
Attack Batu: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Attack Marioc: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
Party is up (though Batu and Marioc need to let me know first what they're doing about the overrun).
Marioc of the Sea |
For some reason I can't move myself in the map. I keep selecting another rectangle.
Marioc lets the toad walk right past him. He takes a further step back and summons his entangling shot at the toad that went for him.
Gather power + shoot with entangling infusion
Touch attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Damage: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (4, 4) + 2 = 10
Nazard |
Marioc Reflex: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Unfortunately, Marioc slips in the greasy residue left by the sliding toad, and ends up prone on the ground. He can try to stand up, needing a DC 15 Acrobatics check, but that’ll take a move action and trigger an AoO, or he can stay prone and deal with the range penalties. He’ll also need a concentration check to fire his beam defensively.
Oryn Goldenstalk |
Once they hit the floor, the begin to glide on their bellies, crossing in front of Oryn as they target the newcomers with full on body slams.
Since Oryn still carries his spear, would this movement provoke an attack of opportunity?
Rao Redflame |
The last one to be lowered, Rao tried to be encouraging to the kids, giving them a smile as he was lowered. Trying to find a place of calm in this chaos was nigh impossible, so he settled on listening to the sound of the fire being gathered around him as he was lowered. The sound of the flames gathering, the sound of the embers flying through the air...
It was not tranquility, but it was not chaos, either. That was the important part.
It was time to see what was flammable down here.

Rao will gather power for however long it takes to be lowered. 1 point's worth, I suspect?
Master Kylan |
Once on the ground, Master Kylan raised a hand and caused currents of aether to loft an empty wooden box against the Red Kobold.
telekinetic blast (ranged touch): 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 5 + 1 = 24 for a possible 2d6 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (3, 4) + 6 + 1 = 14 kinetic damage.
Oryn Goldenstalk |
Oryn will stab at one of the creatures as it slides past.
Attack of Opportunity
Spear attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14 for damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Watching Marioc slip, Oryn will fire a blast of air over the fallen sailor.
Air Blast: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20 for damage: 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (4, 3) + 5 = 12
Nazard |
Batu Reflex: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
The road slides by but Batu keeps his footing in the slime.
AoO vs Marioc: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
So this past round was spent raising the cauldron. Kylan will be able to get in this round and disembark next round.
Oryn, between a spear and air blast, takes out one of the road creatures. It falls over, sliding into the wall. It’s kobold rider is still stuck to its back and spends this round detaching itself.
The other toad fires more goo at Oryn, who once again finds himself entangled. Reflex DC 13 or be stuck to the floor.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Its rider takes a swipe at Batu, but misses.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Edgrin begins a song, inspiring everybody to have +1 bonuses on attack and damage. Everybody’s up.
