I honestly don't know if Sarzuket recalls the layout from running this before, but he did just steer the party in the direction of the Interesting Development, so I'm not going to complain.

Heading along the wide corridor north from the laboratory, you come to a pit, blocking the hallway.

A narrow ledge runs along the western edge of the pit, about 3 inches wide. DC 15 Acrobatics. Don't attempt it just yet.

At the bottom of the pit there is a grisly heap of decaying body parts. The air is rank with the smell of rot, corruption, and pungent chemicals.

And across the pit, further along the corridor, you see a room. This large chamber has a vaulted ceiling, and unlike the rest of the ossuary, bears a distinct impression of habitation rather than abandonment. Lit candelabras reveal old tapestries hanging from the walls to ward off the subterranean chill, and a threadbare carpet covers the floor. Shabby furniture—a few chairs and tables, an armoire, and a dresser—flanks a large canopied bed in the center of the room, topped with satin sheets and a heap of lumpy pillows.

Seated on one of the beds is a rotting corpse. Yet she seems alert and intelligent. She wears a decayed dress that must have one been extravagant. The jewelry she wears has withstood the ravages of time. Standing next to her are two skeletons in tattered burial gowns that must have once been fine and elegant.

The corpse looks at you. "You have slain Svilennius, have you?" There is sadness and regret in her voice, but also a fair amount of anger. "I knew the Pharasmans would send assassins sooner or later. What he did they would not forgive. At least you gave him the peace of the grave. I thank you for that mercy. Do you now come to destroy me?"

Knowledge (Religion) DC 12:
She is undead, and similar to a zombie, but has retained her intellect.

Lol, apparently in the best light possible!

Grakkahn keeps his glaive in hand, but with several allies opting for conversation, he waits to see how things develop. Is that a talking zombie? Or is this something more sinister?

The zombie begins to weep.
"Something yet to accomplish, gnome?"
These words seem to hurt her, though she is not angry at Sarzuket.
"How about living? I was ill. Nothing could be done. I looked like a corpse already, at twenty-four. I searched everywhere for answers, even Ankar-Te."
The necromancy-friendly district of Kaer Maga.
"I could not afford what I needed, so I found work at... at the White Lady."
A brothel in said necromancy-friendly district, catering to rather unsavory tastes.

"Svilennius found a way. He saved me. Through means that the Pharasmans had punished him for studying. Excommunicated and banished. If you had handed him over to them alive, after what he had done since then, they would have made such an example of him..."
The zombie sobs.

"My name is Esme Verisi. I want to live. Even in this state. I will go... I don't know, Geb maybe.
If you will let me leave and somehow help me get out of here.

Your friend asks if I had anything to do with the theft of the bodies. I did not. And yet it was all my fault.

Whatever alchemy Svilennius used to save me, it worked, after a few days. I arose. My mind intact. In the days between, thinking he had failed, Svilennius destroyed his notes. He became obsessed with accomplishing that task again. So he stole the bodies to continue his experiments.

He was kind to me. And brilliant. But he wanted to 'show them all', the narrow-minded Pharasmans. I wish that his success with my case had been enough for him.

The Church of Pharasma will destroy me merely for existing. Will you help me escape?"

If some of us know how to preserve bodies against decomposition, perhaps via unguent of timelessness, a case could also be made to disguise you with a wig and a mundane disguise. Regardless of what the Pharasmins think of you, this will all go in our report to the Society, so knowledge of your existence will not be lost. Since you obviously still have your soul, and have freedom of will, I'm expecting your existence may also generate numerous debates among their circles, as your condition could be viewed as a temporary disease. In fact, I could even see some in the top leadership of the Church of Pharasma to put an end to your current existence and pony up for the full resurrection 'treatment', so to speak, if you'd be willing to sign a non-disclosure agreement as to the very possibility of your previous state of existence, perhaps... Would you... be willing for us to make this argument with them on your behalf, or take the more illegal approach of risking a sea voyage to Geb? the former could mean that your healthy life could be fully restored and you wouldn't have to move out of this city, if you still have friends and family present on the surface... and frankly, you wouldn't have to live looking over your shoulder the whole time... but discussing this with the Pharasmins could result in them just wanting to destroy you... and perhaps us as well... by extension... hmmm...."

Korum's mouth hangs agape. "Aw Thorns! For real? This is...this is a real thing?" Years of training an dogma leave him at odds with this new reality. Intelligent undead are evil and malicious. He lowers his axe. "This is a trick. It has to be. Undead who talk are connivin' murderers, the worst of the worst. Liches and vampires." Though even as he makes the argument, he himself does not seemed convinced that the creature before them is a dire threat. "We can't just... let her go. That's not how things work."

He continues to process what he knows and what he sees. "There are some thing that are clear. People may argue over 'good and evil' or 'right and wrong', but there is zero disagreement about 'living and dead', none. The world is supposed to be for the living, and anything else...anything, is a violation of that rule. Don't matter who did or why. It's wrong."

He looks back toward Esme, "Look, mortal minds ain't designed to live forever. Even though you feel like yerself now, living beyond yer time will surely drive you crazy. Whatever dark magics keeping you alive will tear at your soul, twisting and corrupting you. Time destroys mountains. A body ain't nothing compared to that." He takes a breath, "You may not be a killer right now, but yer gonna be. A year, a thousand years, don't make much difference." He shifts his attention to the team. "And whoever she kills, that's gonna be on us. if we don't take care of this right here, right now, were gonna have blood on our hands."

You've already punished - quite permanently I may add - the man responsible for turning her into a zombie. Personally I think Lady Esme here is the real treasure of this current expedition. He tries to change tactics. "Alright Sarz, let's say you and yer captain friend get her to Geb. A land full of murder and darkness. A land where the living are nothing more than cattle. Esme shakes her head at Sylvester. "I have no plan. I hope you can help."

At Korum's words, she trembles. "Okay, okay, I won't go to Geb! Uh, uh... Ankar-Te, here in Kaer Maga, only values the undead as mindless drones. Geb places no value on the living. Svilennius dreamed of a place where we could live together. Is there no such place?"

She is also afraid of Sarzuket's plan. "Would they see that as a fair deal? Or as extortion or blackmail? If it worked, it would be a miracle, but if they were angry...
But even then, no matter what miracles they work for me, I will not be a part of their damned cult. I will say my thanks, keep my silence, and go away.

I knew what Svilennius's cure would mean. It was not against my will that he made me what I am. I had no other choice. If the Pharasmans had not tormented him so with their narrow-mindedness..."

She nods to Sarzuket. "We can try, if your friends are willing."
She points to her skeletal handmaidens, and they grab long wooden planks lying against one of the walls, ready to bring the planks to span the pit.

Throwing his hands in the air, "She has friends? What. In. THE. HELLS!" He turns and walks a few feet away and then storms back. "Do you see how this is a problem? Now it's not just one girl with a sad tale. No! Now there is an entire creepy entourage." He stomps away again, "I cannot friggin' believe this." From down the corridor, he turns back and shouts at the group. "This is...this is...I don't even know what this is!" He punches the wall in frustration as he mutters to himself. "Great! Just great." Again, he yells down the hallway, "Do you guys know my sister is a paladin? A PAL AH DIN! How do I explain this to her? Can anyone tell me that?" Looking to the ceiling for guidance, the exasperated rant continues for sometime. Then another shout, "Oh yeah, did you hear? SHE KNEW! She was aware of exactly what was going to happen. Don't forget that. It changes everything, doesn't it? That's not some poor victim, she made a choice! She accepted this. Of all the selfish things..." and again the diatribe quiets to a harsh whisper.

"My handmaidens are... not like me. They are your more common skeletons, save for a bit of Svilennius's alchemical modifications. They have no minds. I would not expect you to spare them.

As to the choice I made, I wanted to live - or, at least, to continue to exist. I make no apologies for that."

So there isn't a cut-and-dried answer here. I wouldn't impose any alignment implications for saving her or destroying her (as long as you weren't needlessly cruel about it) - that is, I won't force you to take one solution or the other.
Korum is certainly RP'ing "Favored Enemy: Undead" quite well, but Sarzuket's solution is intriguing.

I say we put our proposal to the Pharasmins and sweeten the deal by promising to leave Esme out of our reports to the Society... I'd be willing to put that in writing for them. All the Society cared about was us providing assistance to these priests, you know. I don't see them refusing to bring her back to life with these compromises, but maybe it's my overly hopeful gnomish logic at work here.
However, Esme, you'll have to tone down your hatred of the Church of Pharasma and cooperate with them to make this work. Otherwise I will not even make the attempt at diplomacy with them. You must promise to at least want out of this current condition at all costs. Going to Geb or Ankar-Te is NOT an option. I'd rather send you to Pharasma right now than send you to either of these places, in light of what Korum just told us...
So how about we try to convince them to bring you back in all your youthful health and beauty? there is much to live for in this world! sunlight, the sound of birds at play in the trees and the smell of flowers are all much more preferable to the darkness of underground caves and dungeons and... whatever goes on in Ankar-Te..."
finishes Sarzuket, shuddering...

Esme is losing patience with Sarzuket.

"I can promise my silence, gnome. Is that not enough for you? Must I also grovel before this intolerant church?

If I claim that I seek to be free from this state at all costs, they would know I lie. I would live again if I could. I would remain as I am if I could not live again. It is at least a semblance of life.

Help me escape to freedom, or help me return to life. But you cannot ask me to believe something that I don't. To believe that I am an abomination. I don't believe that.

Ankar-Te is a part of this very city we are in! Pharasma is not the only god there is. Her church does not rule the city! The faithful of Urgathoa have rights as well. At least there maybe I could go back to working at the White Lady while I think of my next steps. Kaer Maga is... a place for outcasts. I do not need anybody's moralizing."

She's willing to go along with your plan to a point, but you're not going to able to get her to kiss Pharasman posteriors.

"I also seriously doubt that the Pharasmins would be willing to foot the bill for a Resurrection. Frankly, if we brought you upstairs, I would be surprised if they didn't destroy you on sight, and probably refuse to pay us, for good measure."

Since she is undead, a Raise Dead won't work... and the Church of Pharasma isn't exactly a good-aligned charity organisation... 10,000+ gp is a heck of a lot more than they were willing to offer us, after all!

Sarzuket does not respond to Cayden, awaiting everyone's vote, and looking down with sadness. He had said his piece and no good would come from further words. He had kids and a wife back home, and could not fathom the idea that if anything would happen to them, and that somehow this process was applied on them to extend their existence, say, in the absence of other ways to bring people back to life, that they would waste their second chance at existence loitering for an eternity in debased places which devalue life. If they would, he would do something about it. Not all choices are good choices. Some people do know better than others. To think otherwise would be living a lie, a life of apathy and inaction that is justified by the silly idea that everyone's choice is somehow a valid one, and thus no one, nowhere, ever, should do something about anything.

It feels awful, but I have too much at stake to take this risk, and I'm not lying in my report," he confesses. Being a Pathfidner is hard...

No problem with the GM's discussion post of our headcannon being the ending for our characters!

There are a few more minor monsters throughout the catacombs, but nothing you can't handle. There are traps, easily spotted by Cadyen and disarmed by Korum.

In one of the barricaded rooms, you find a pair of Tengu rogues, who can tell you how they came in through the tunnel you passed earlier. A tunnel that leads out to the open mouth of one of the other titanic faces on the cliff face below Kaer Maga.

The Chime of Opening opens the locked door out of the catacombs. Eventually you find Cryptsmistress Valanthe Nerissia and give her your report - at least, partially. Enough to let her know what was causing the disappearance of bodies, and that it had been taken care of.

"Svilennius had returned? And found a way into the crypts? That is most distressing. Thank you for dealing with him permanently."

She asks for reports on the Runelords' crypts and statues, asking a number of questions about what you found there.

Eventually, you make your way back to Venture-Captain Sheila Heidmarch. You file your reports with her. While waiting for a ship back to Absalom, you are each summoned for one-on-one meetings.

"I notice some discrepancies," says the Venture-Captain to each of you in turn. "This Esme creature... some reports say she was hostile and you had to destroy her. Others say that the tengu rogues helped her escape through their tunnel."
Sheila Heidmarch taps a finger on her desk.
"Such situations are not unknown."
And she leaves it at that.
