Roll20 Map - Tracking Sheet

Major Kort IDs the shadowy form, and strikes it thrice! Edelmira, in her exuberance, can’t quite land a blow. Kamari kills her first opponent with a crit and steps up with another crit against green. Elen feints, then connects with both green and orange. Muri also focuses on the shadow piercing it badly - only its incorporeal nature allows it to survive for a while, but in the end it succumbs to its injuries and poofs out of existence!

Green and orange focus on Kamari.

They hit once, further causing another Fort DC 20 or dex damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2 on Kamari.

Though coifed and masked, you can tell from his actions that your opponent is supernatural.

Knowledge Planes DC 30:
He is a fetchling. NE Medium outsider (native).

Fetchlings are descended from generations of humans trapped on the Plane of Shadow. Infused with the essence of that plane, they are more and less than human, and often serve as middlemen in planar trade and politics. Other than their yellow eyes, their flesh has no color—it is either stark white, midnight black, or a shade of gray. On the Material Plane, they conceal themselves with heavy clothing or dim light so they can work without prejudice. The name “fetchling” is a human word; their own name for their race is kayal, meaning “shadow people.”
- - -

He casts Chain of Perdition (link), sort of. What he really did was some supernatural mumbo-jumbo and that chain appears and strikes!

It blinds Muri, or tries to.
Chain: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (6) + 20 = 26 vs CMD 35

He then steps into the shadow of the doorway - and disappears!

Perception DC 48:
Stealth in plain sight: 1d20 + 30 ⇒ (18) + 30 = 48

You see him, a bit. He’s just north of his last spot on the map protected by the wall.
- - -

I’ve left his icon where he was last seen.

Major Kort picks at orange, hitting twice. Edelmira (per chat) moves under Elen to block a Kamari flank and swings once at orange, smacking her and demoralizing her as well! Kamari stabs green twice, once a very deep blow indeed - but green does not fall. Elen all but fells green, leaving her without dex as she stabs orange as well. Muri hits twice, nearly putting orange out of commission - but not quite!

Green and orange continue to focus on Kamari.

Suddenly, the room grows rather much harder to see, as darkness fills the area. Just normal darkness, but of course without darkvision or other counter, you cannot see clearly. Let me know if you can see through darkness. Major Kort is just outside the darkness bubble.

The chain, flailing about on its own, tries for Muri again.

Elen senses the Marquis exactly where he is on the map - and whallops him! After killing orange of course.

Muri is up, but blind. I'll GMPC him tomorrow if needed.

Roll20 Map - Tracking Sheet

GM Rolls:
1d100 ⇒ 51

Edelmira pours the bright sun of daylight on Aymr - lighting the way. Major Kort plunks a few into orange, including a crit, but doesn’t quite fell her. Kamari only hits once, but it’s enough to kill green. Elen kills orange, finds the Marquis - and cuts him as well! Muri GMPC removes the whip from his eyes and moves up to be in position to shoot once he has a target.

You see the masked marquis from the doorway as he casts (supernaturally you think) resilient sphere on Elen. He then moves past her, tumbling to try and avoid the AoO…
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 28 ⇒ (11) + 28 = 39 vs DC 36

The marquis manages to dodge past Elen's deadly blade.

Elen, Will DC 17. Separately, also a Reflex DC 17 or be encapsulated in a sphere of force and unable to move or attack!

Elen has an amazingly bad run of luck.

It's not enchantment so all the will saves fail, and the fumble on the reflex save means you are in fact stuck in the force bubble. You can attack the bubble (though as a force effect it has a hardness of 30), or someone can dispel it, but otherwise you are temporarily trapped.

Yes, Elen can attack the interior of the sphere if you wish and move about within it.

Edelmira and Muri are up! I'll GMPC Muri after Edelmira posts if he doesn't make it back.

The Night Swan rushes into the other room after the Marquis, staying back to leave clear access for her allies.

Edelmira rushes forward and intimidates the poor marquis! Major Kort double moves to catch up. Kamari comes around the corner with speed, and hits thanks to Elen’s bonus. Edelmira with heroic effort manages a blow and tries to box the marquis in. Major Kort hits twice, and even manages a crit! Kamari also confirms the crit - and fells the foe.

Muri can save his arrows, and smite, as the masked marquis collapses at your feet. With the bleed damage though, he won’t last long if you wish to try and save him for any reason. There’s one other cutthroat also bleeding out, but more slowly. I’ll assume they’re both dead without action on your part.

Studded leather armor +4 shadow (19,550gp)
Shortsword, +3 heartseeker (32,310gp)
Amulet of natural armor +4 (32,000gp)
Belt of the weasel (10,000gp)
Cloak of resistance +3 (9,000gp)
Ring of protection +2 (8,000gp)
Porcelain unholy symbol of Norgorber
Heavy iron key

You see the key, and your eyes light up for it has the symbol of Abadar stamped in the iron. This is the key to a secure vault box in Oppara’s Abadaran temple. Chances are you may have such a key for certain keepsakes best not carried around - but if not you’ve certainly seen them, and heard of them talked about in noble circles. Deeds, legal documents, precious jewels, etc. - there’s no knowing what might lie within, or how big the box may be.

As nobles of the princess, you could try to pull rank and claim that the masked marquis was an enemy of the state, and thus his wealth is forfeit. Or try to impersonate the marquis - though knowing how he appeared when he went to that box might be the hardest part!

Female Jininese Elf Lvl 16

Elen finally tumbles out of the sphere and alights with the others. ”I was in Hell, almost. Glad to see him put down — nice work! But who is he? Does the mask come off?”

If no one has any reservations, Elen will try and unmask the Masked Marquis.

Female Half-Elf aka Katherine Weaver

"It is past time that he is unmasked." Kamari waits to see what is revealed about the corpse.

As for the key, she thinks it best to consult with the Princess before taking any action.

She could use the amulet of natural armor but nothing else.

Male Halfling Herder/17

Muri watches as the strength of Betony bears down on the Marquis, so remains quiet in saddle, as the others approach to remove the Mask. "This is the assassin, right? The Princess is dead because of him? But he didn't do it?" The halfling remains wary.

"Do we need to take steps to make sure he can't come back? Or do we want to bring him back to face justice?" Muri borderline babbles to fill in the gaps of discussion.

Roll20 Map - Tracking Sheet

Elen unmasks the Masked Marquis to discover... just an ordinary nondescript man. He doesn't even have a beard - no particularly distinguishing marks.

All your evidence, including Underfoot's nose, suggests he's the one who killed the Princess. The tool that held the blade at least.

But if he's a door guard here, what insidiousness must lie within...

The Night Swan would also like the Masked Marquis’s amulet of natural armor if nobody else objects, offering up her own as a consolation prize. Hers is +3 and his is +4

The Night Swan looks over the Marquis’s body and belongings. She has a not-insignificant skill at disguise and lying and is curious how difficult it would be to mimic him to infiltrate. The lack of insight into his personality and mannerisms amongst “allies” is troublesome, though. Not to mention being potentially alone and without equipment should she try to go it alone.

About what range of difficulty would it be for her to disguise herself as the Marquis? Like is he significantly different from her in size and build?

Roll20 Map - Tracking Sheet

I think your builds are likely not too dissimilar? You're much stronger and more bulky. He was lighter on his feet (more dextrous). But in all three categories you were/are both superior specimens to the average.

Layering magic won't likely help as the church will check for such things - especially if the vault is a large one or well established. So for that task anyway, you'll want to rely on your own disguise skills...

Let me know which of you takes the amulet of natural armor. I suggest a cage match! hehehhe.

Kort nods, trying to think of the best solution.

"We can try to burn the body completely, and also keep the head with us. That will prove our assertions. And it might be helpful for The Night Swan's escapades," Kort shrugs, declining to take any of the magics just yet.

Kort examine the blade to ensure that it doesn't hold any soul-reaping abilities, and then checks the magics again to ensure that he didn't miss anything.

Finally, he'll take the key and be ready to move forward.

The Night Swan decides. ”Why the hells not. I’m skilled enough at disguise even without magic. I will need to wear all of his gear for the time being, but I will be able to call upon my normal attire quickly as needed.”

Disguise checks are rolled in secret by the GM, so no roll. Her bonus is +24 with heroism

Elen switches her attire to match the Double Masked Marquis, Swan of the Night.

Then she puzzles over the beardless ordinary nondescript man.

"Major Kort, are you sure you didn't miss anything? Was he really just a fanatic of Norgorber?"

Kamari heals, as Edelmira takes on the persona of the masked marquis.

Major Kort is pretty sure he didn't miss anything, and nothing changes about the dead body when his gear is stripped. He looks very ordinary. He blends into almost any crowd...

There’s a small window in this heavy wooden door. Beyond is a small chamber with stairs leading up and down.

Major Kort does find a trap however - and a most insidious one at that!

Trap Details:
When the trap is triggered, it generates a forcecage in a 20-foot cube around the trap’s trigger. The forcecage is barred with half-inch bars of force, spaced a half an inch apart. Each bar is also studded with razor-sharp force spikes extending 10 feet into the cage, filling the interior with slowly moving blades. Anyone inside the area of effect when the prison of blades trap goes off may attempt a DC 23 Reflex save to leap out of the boundaries of the forcecage.

The prison of blades lasts for 10 rounds. A creature inside the forcecage who takes no actions on a turn takes 3d6 points of slashing damage each round. A creature inside the forcecage who takes an action of any kind instead takes 6d6 points of slashing damage. A creature can attempt a DC 23 Reflex save each round for half damage.

The Major successfully disables the magical trap and you investigate...

There are two sets of stairs, up and down. Neither has seen any traffic though in quite some time. Starting up you reach, after a switchback or two, a large and vacant second floor.

Stacks and racks and assorted bins show it to be a large library of some kind - but it's entirely devoid of books or any other items of any interest. Nothing even flickers on the magical spectrums, for I'm sure Major Kort will make a quick sweep.

Heading down next, you move a little rubble and proceed only to come upon more rubble. Enough in fact that you can't proceed - and as it's lots of little rubble and not large chunks, no luck with spells like stone shape. You'll almost certainly need to turn back. Someone has changed the basement configuration and sealed off this stairwell.

A dead end. Where to next?

”Rubble. I doubt they were guarding that,” Kort notes and examines the door he is near and readies to go that way when others are ready.
