You are allowed to attack while averting your eyes, but the penalty is worse, raising your miss chances to 25% or 50%, I forget which. I've been in more than a few scenarios where we are dealing with a medusae or something and with a gaze attack and it can be quite annoying.

No point is specifying low is bad. I always do it based on the description. if it says 10% chance of something then that something happens on a 1-10/100.

Dino Tarak wrote:
Confusion dice love me! Do I have to attack with a single strike or full attack?

Since the spell does not say, I am going to be lenient. One attack is adequate. I must say that this confusion has worked spectacularly well, at least from his perspective.

Confused and injured, Tarak let’s his wild form take control for a moment and lash out at the nearest thing. A confused and bloodraging Gnasher.

Bite, confused, bulls strength: 1d20 + 5 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (13) + 5 + 2 - 1 = 19
Damage, bulls strength: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
I had him bite for flavor, but it feels gamey to not use my highest damage attack so I’m using my claw attacks 1d8, not that that 1 makes any difference

Malgrim enjoys the scenary while Gnasher adds injury to insult and smacks Xulthos around a bit. Tarak gets turned around and somehow gets Gnasher's confused with Kaardswan. Or was it Xulthos? Anyway, gnolls are bad so he lashes out ineffectively at Gnasher.

With the one point of fast healing and the 11 HP he gets back, I think Gnasher is at -38 HP

Don't have many better options with Gnasher in the line of fire, lightning bolt will probably finish him off. I'll start rolling up that Cleric now :)

Dino's attacks all just simply bounce off the carapace. But I'm wondering if Gnasher shrinks back to normal size when he loses consciousness. If so, you may be able to get a lightning bolt off without harming him. On the one hand it says it works like enlarge person which has a duration. On the other hand it is a rage induced ability and the rage has ended.

I assumed that since is rage induced that he would return to normal size

Bleeding from several wounds, the unconscious gnoll drops to the ground, returning to his normal size a pool of blood gathering under him.

I'll take the kindly GM's offer of a redo of my completely pointless full attack and 5' step back and cast Lightning Bolt

Tarak shakes out of his confusion, swearing he attacked this thing and had his teeth and claws bounce off its armored hide. Doing the dinosaur version of a shrug, he steps back slightly and roars in a strangely melodic fashion, ending with his mouth open wide and a bolt of lightning arcing out of his throat to the thing savaging the group.

Amazingly, Xulthos does not have spell resistance, but, as suspected, he is nimble and with a flutter of his wings, does manage to avoid the brunt of the attack. Also, the creature seems to shrug off some of the electricity as well (5 ER). Still, he pauses for a second having been bloodied more than expected in the fight.

Confusion has too many rounds lol. Gonna be a party wipe here.

Actually, if you could just get one break you could make it. So far it has been mostly bad luck. All of you failed your STs. Mei continually rolls bad on the confusion effects and she is the one that could really make a huge difference in the fight at this point. Just one lousy result where she attacks Xulthos and rolls OK and I think you guys would win. The dice are rally killing you. I've been sorely tempted to fudge the results a bit, let me tell you. But in the long run, if I do that then there is no sense of challenge if you know I will just bail you out.

yeah, I love his natural attacks, but if he's fighting something that has DR magic, it really limits him, he'd be better off to stick with the bardiche or another two handed weapon.

OOC it was Gnasher that would have scored an additional 15-20 points of damage and he really deserved the credit, but IC, so that I did not have to retro everything, I decided to see if Mei could turn the battle if she actually got a chance to swing at it and she did. If she had whiffed I would have had to think of some other way of adding the additional damage.

Mei is sorely tempted to chase after the fleeing Daemon but with all the rapidly expiring allies, she decides to rescue them first. After she scrambles around in her backpack and finds a potion of CLW, she feeds it to the druid. Tarak opens his groggy eyes to the worried look of the fighter who has already moved on to Malgrim with her second potion.

After that she is out of the room like a shot arrow in pursuit of the daemon.

Urah is half way to the rope when the Daemon passes over head and takes a parting shot at him with his tail (flyby attack) wounding him and bringing him to a screeching halt.

to hit tail: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (7) + 15 = 22
damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 3) + 3 = 10

Finding his courage upon seeing the thing flee (and galvanized into action by the attack, which cuts through the confusion), he takes a parting shot himself and strike the creature in the back between it's wings and it looses consciousness and crashes into the wall at the end of the hall. Still and quiet. Threats no longer a concern.

and digs in his pouches, finding his small store of potions (I guess I didn’t buy scrolls this level) and wand, and turns to the very wounded gnoll and starts dumping potions down his throat.

I have 2 CMW, 2 CLW potions and a wand of CLW with 4/5 charges on it. He’ll use all of it to get the group on their feet. I’m in transit tonight and pretty under the weather and can’t recall the rolls off the top of my head, so anyone can feel free to roll and distribute the heals as needed if we need to keep moving before I get back online tomorrow afternoon

Malgrim has two wands that we can spread out as well. Maybe see how we are doing after those charges before we use the potions. When he is up he will just hand them to Tarak to use since he has to do UMD to get them to work. So 5 charges to Gnasher and 5 for Malgrim, and Tarak can put his 4 Wand charges into himself. I will leave it to others to roll their healing.

After Tarak dumps a potion down his throat, Gnasher begins to cough, pushing the second potion away. Standing up he looks about for the enemy. "Save potions, where Bug-demon?"

As he glances towards the others, he casts infernal healing. Still fatigued, he pulls out one of his own cmw potion handing it towards Tarak. "Thank you Tarak for saving Gnasher, take Gnasher's potion please."

He points towards Malgrim, who is extending one of his wands, "Gnasher used spell to heal some, us wand to heal more, save potions for emergency." As Tarak uses the wand, Gnasher asks, "What happened?"

The group has no idea what to expect when they leave the place so they heal up as best as they can, which is pretty darn good. With Xulthos out of commission and showing no signs of regeneration they turn their attention to looting. First on Xulthos, since they most probably want to make sure he stays down (Anyone want to make absolutely sure by mangling the body?). On his body they find a magical amulet and a magical ring. The room is barren, but then again that stupid illusion spell makes everything light up with magic so a detect magic is of limited use.

Realizing Urah had babbled something about the great demon crashing into the wall, Gnasher picks up his magical bardiche and slowly moves into the hall. Finding the thing dead, Gnasher nods approvingly. Raising his bardiche he chops off it's head. Returning to Urah he holds the head up, "Firestarter kill bug-demon." Holding the head out towards his friend. "Fire starter want trophy to show Lady Almah?"

If Urah doesn't want it Gnasher will pick it back up when they leave to show Lady Almah

Setting the head down, Gnasher then begins to search the bodies of the zombie-like creatures that attacked them, and the niches' where they had been standing.

Just to be clear, this would be an assumption on Gnasher's part. Though OOC we all know Urah's final snowball KOed the thing, IC he ran screaming back into the room saying it accidentally crashed into a wall and killed itself. For some reason Urah is not interested in the glory. Probably raises expectations too much for his liking :)

Your searches do not turn up anything else. The analysis of the magic items turn up nothing. Too fancy for Urah's limited understanding of magic (and bad rolls).

There is nothing else to find in the crypt. Since we are not levelling up at this time it is worth figuring out what the magic items are and then distributing them.

”OK then. Looks like this place is tapped. Let’s get out and give the boss the good news, aye? She’ll like that.” Tarak finishes, pointing to the thing’s head in Gnashers paws.

guess it’s time to report in then

Indeed, eventually you all come to the same conclusion. Gnasher nabs another trophy to bring back if Urah declines (who I am going to guess will) and you all make your way back to the Monastery. The 60' rope climb is a lot more difficult going up than down and some of you struggle, perhaps even fall, but eventually you navigate the treacherous climb with or without aid.

Garavan greets you with excitement and leads you immediately to Almah's office who has already pushed her papers aside in anticipation of good news. Then princess Almah smiles broadly. "I am thrilled that the take over of Kelmarane worked out so smoothly and that none of you were killed in the process. Truly you are heroes and have earned your rewards."

"With the gnolls gone, and the evil that threw Kelmarane into chaos defeated, a new era can begin. I will report to Katapesh of our success. This will set many things in motion to make this town a prospering trade post between Katapesh and Osirion again."

"But this new era raises also the question what your role will be. Before you answer that, let me tell you what I have to offer. First, for your services each of you will receive 100 platinum. Further, you get the Manor house close to the bridge. You can do with it as you see fit, but my hope is of course that you move in and stay in Kelmarane. Last but not least, I'll name each of you officially 'Knight Protector of Kelmarane'."

"In this new era many positions are open to be taken by the courageous. Positions in the administration, or guard that has to be founded. Or the stalls in the battle market that need to be filled with stores again. Speaking of which, I'm not sure the current inhabitants should remain. They seem a bit... unsavory. Whatever you set your mind to do, if it adds to the good of getting Kelmarane back to its former glory or beyond, you have my support."

To be honest I pirated a lot of that text from another GMs thread. I will do that occasionally.

Earlier
Looking up from the bodies, Gnasher Joins Tarak in the final search. Not finding anything more, he nods his head in agreement with Tarak. "Chief right, time to go." Returning to the large room, Gnasher picks up his bardiche, seeing Urah had left the head, he picks it up as well to show it to lady Almah. Once they arrive at the rope, Gnasher holds the bug-head in his mouth as he climbs the knotted rope. Waiting at the top, rolling his eyes as the others have difficulty with the simple task.

Now
Entering the lady's office Gnasher lays the bug-head on her desk as proof that they had succeeded in their task. As she begins to explain their reward, Gnasher raises an eyebrow in surprise. He ponders for a moment looking from Tarak to Urah, then to the newcomers Malgrim and Mei. As Lady Almah finishes Gnasher lifts a paw, waiting for her to acknowledge him. "Gnasher will stay." He quickly looks at Tarak, then back towards the lady. "Hope other do as well." He clears his throat, looking down. "Gnasher not know anything about being knight or running town. But Gnasher know how to hunt gnolls." He gestures towards the bridge. "Gnasher accept small house. Gnasher help find guides to Osirion and punish any gnolls who attack Kelmarane or merchants."

Earlier in the cave.
Urah vehemently refuses the head trophy once again stating that he's not the killer and having nearly lost his own life to it would rather not be close to it at all.

Heading back to report, Urah reports the battle as truthfully as he can with embellishments on how Gnasher and his companions dealt mortal blows to the demon. He of course skips the part where they were hitting each other due to the demon's spell.

With that done, after dismissal he heads for a good long bath and rest. With an eye of getting someone else to identify what they found if someone else hasn't done so already.

Tarak glances up at the sky for a long moment while the rest of the group answers. Finally, looking down, he speaks up "Aye, I'll stay for a spell. It seems my work isn't done yet.'

During the intervening year Tarak spends time trying to get some local crops and produce to grow in the area, as well as spending long hours scouting the surrounding area from the air in his eagle form, relishing the freedom to fly.

So... patrol? agriculture? planting a ready supply of gooseberry patch?

@Gasher
Your efforts provide a stipend in the form of 250gp per month. Since I do wealth by level I am going to give you a 10% bonus to your WBL effective immediately (along with the opportunity to reconstruct your inventory).

@Magrim and Tarak
Your travels provide you a +1 circumstance bonus to survival skill rolls and any one other skill (with an appropriate explanation).

@Urah
Urah befriends Garavel and gains Almah's trust as he makes himself useful in the administration of the town. Reports of his usefulness reach the ears of the Pactmasters of Katepesh, a boon that will come into play in a later adventure.

Book 2: House of the Beast

After several months of tending to your travels, battles, and reconstruction, the town of Kelmarane has grown to include about 500 industrious souls (meaning a cap of 200gp for item purchases made there), well on the road to recovery. Towards the end of Spring the town is visited by a travelling priest named Zayifed, a self-proclaimed prophet of Sarenrae and compared in size to Gnasher. While visiting the tavern in the battle market he spreads tales of doom and gloom, claiming that the gnoll tribes are gathering on the far slopes of the Pale Mountain, and the Carrion King is preparing to attack Kelmarane and retake it with an army of gnolls. This, combined with the reports (and in some cases personal experience of the PCs) of increased gnoll activity in the area. It does not take long for the news to reach Almah, Garavel, and, of course, you all.
