I guess I misunderstood the "no more wolves" part of you post Galahad? Did you mean instead there isn't a second group of summoned wolves, bringing the total number of them to 6 or whatever because the spell was disrupted?
But didn't the caster what's her name leave during the last round? So How is she still casting? Or did she cast invisibility instead?
I think we need to recruit for our missing players. At least one more person. If this is seriously the way things are going to go, potentially a number of summoned wolves, who have trip, etc., in numbers equal to ours on top of an enemy party that already contains at least one spellcaster well above our level and total numbers of mooks (one also a spellcaster) equal to ours then this is just silly for our party to deal with as it now stands.
I mean look at the map on Roll20. It's ridiculous.
Galahad0430 |
I meant no more additional wolves. The spell was Summon Monster so it was a full round to cast. The first one she got off, but the second one was disrupted by Terryl's shot. She left (you think, no one seems to have spellcraft in your party). The current summoned wolves will remain for the duration of the spell.
Signy Birkirsdottir |
We may well win this combat, although I'm not sure where the attacks will be coming from to close the deal within less than 3 - 4 rounds at best.
But that's not the point I'm getting at. Sure, the 2nd summoning spell didn't go off. But it could have. That would have dropped another 3 wolves into the fight. Our opposition can easily generate AoO's through trips, this is 2nd level and trips are quite easy to get off. So, we're outnumbered by opponents who attack more then we do, and do more damage than we do.
If this is what we can expect going forward, it won't take long for things to go very badly against us. This one would have except for Teryll's arrow. We have 1 full BAB character who must either solo on the front line or Signy must join him. Signy is a support character who can't get a free standard action to start a bardic performance because opponents are so numerous and we have no battlefield control ability.
If this is our new reality Signy would do better just going straight swashbuckler because all she'll be doing going forward is melee. She's not built for it but that's where we are.
The point I'm trying to make is if we can expect what we've seen so far to continue, we need at least one more character. I personally would lean toward an arcane caster who can give us some battlefield control, I'd take someone who can fight on the front line so those of us who cast have some flexibility.
BTW: We used to have Spellcraft covered. The player with points in it quit.
Faerin Cordova |
It sounds like you're blaming the encounter difficulty for character choices. 1 full BAB character is on us. People played what they want to play.
Summoning is a viable tactic because of the fact that one character can become 4 or 7 with a couple of successful summonings. That's just good tactics. Would I suggest we pick up an arcane full caster or full melee, yes, probably. But I'd rather not shoehorn a new player into laying what we think they should just because someone else is unhappy that their character is taking a beating.
It isn't supposed to be a cakewalk.
Signy Birkirsdottir |
No, we had 2 full BAB characters. I'm asking we return to status quo. Actually not even that, we've lost 2 players and I'm suggesting 1 replacement.
Yes, summoning is good tactics. Balanced encounters are also a thing.
I've played in quite a number of PbP games at this point and I've never seen a re-recruitment that ignored party needs unless there simply were no particular party needs.
Faerin Cordova |
So let's put it to a vote, who wants to recruit at least one more person. Preferably Frontline or primary arcane caster?
Or who thinks we're good as is and we'll figure it out between the NPC's and adjusting characters?
Galahad0430 |
There is the option of having Amiri, Jaethal, and/or Linzi going out with you. I didn't include the last two because your group was already big, but now that you've lost both your arcane caster and the ranger, they (especially either Amiri or Jaethal) could pick up the slack. I also wouldn't mind opening recruitment for a new player.
Faerin Cordova |
I'd be fine with Amiri, especially if it doesn't mean that a recruited person is shoehorned into frontline melee if they want to do something else.
An arcane caster still leaves room for a lot of variety and build freedom.

I'm okay with recruiting an additional one or two with a note that front line martial or Arcane caster would be preferred. (We could even give preference to those, but I would state that outright if we are.)
While I realize that we have access to some fairly potent NPC's to fill the roles, if we run that way, I'd prefer actual players covering them as we did with Harrim. It's less time GM has to spend planning for each round or scene to balance being useful versus overshadowing us or handing things to us on a platter.
Pyros Aldori |
I think Amiri fills the martial role, and Linzi could probably cover our arcane needs. But Teryll's idea of having a player play them has merit. But then again, that puts us right back into shoehorning someone into a roll they might not have chosen.
Teryll |
So long as we are upfront about it, I think folks will either understand and play the role they prefer or they won't like it and won't apply.
I may be wrong about people wanting to apply for a more specific party role than normal, but being upfront is the important part.
Signy Birkirsdottir |
Maybe I haven't been understanding how NPCs work in this game... We'll be having permanent NPCs attached to the party? If that's the case then having Amiri would be fine with me. I was actually sort of wondering what happened to her since she was supposed to be with Tartuccio's group but then wasn't.
As for recruiting, I don't see asking for certain roles, like martial or arcane caster, as being unduly restrictive. If a person wants to play such a role they'll apply. If they don't they will look elsewhere. It's not like it's being sprung on them after the fact.
But asking someone to play a specific, pre-built character is a big request. I'm fine with NPCs played by the GM or finding players for them if we can. Galahad's choice on that as far as I'm concerned.
Teryll |
Interesting.
Looking forward to meeting them.

Also, assuming they are reading this already, welcome aboard!

I work for the Oregon Department of Human Services. We're expecting to be hit with maybe the biggest rush of benefits applications ever due to statewide service sector closings.
I'm going to be pulled off my normal job to help process intakes somewhere between sometimes and a lot, and it's possible overtime could become involved.
I don't know what this is going to do to my availability right now, posts from me could become spotty at times depending on how things unfold. It's getting pretty crazy right now.

I meant to post this the other day, I'm in a similar spot as Signy.
I work for a local city government, and things are very much in flux right now.
I should be able to keep up, and I will post when I can, (even if just something short) but feel free to bot me if I take too long to reply.
I should be able to get a post out later today.
Pyros Aldori |
I know this is a great time for bad news, but unfortunately my computer went down last night. I’ll try to keep posting via mobile, but expect me to be sparse for a few days. Thankfully the local shop is still open, so hopefully I’ll get it back soon.

So wolves again now. Another combat just like the last combat.
Given the stresses with work and so forth in my life at the moment I don't need the extra frustration of this in addition.
I'm dropping from the campaign. I hope the rest of you have a great time. Enjoy!

Oh Signy! I was hoping to roleplay with you in this campaign. I hope you reconsider, as Kingmaker is a really good story and campaign arc.
I find PBP as a great relief from the stresses of the Corona Virus and crazy work, but understand and respect you and your situation.
If you give it another chance, I'm certain you'll find Linzi and the cool dynamics of this campaign to be entertaining and laughter inducing.
Signy Birkirsdottir |
Hi Linzi. I'm sorry, maybe another time and place. Normally I feel exactly the same way about PbP games as you. I'm in others that have been running for a long time and that I love. But this one isn't working for me.
Without rehashing the whole thing, which is exactly as originally hashed out earlier in this thread. I brought up something I think is a problem. It was my understanding a remedy had been agreed upon, but we're doing the same thing all over again without the remedy.
I suppose I may be he only person who sees a problem anyway. Whatever the case, I don't see any benefit for me sticking around to be frustrated, or others having to listen to me about it. I think I'm the one out of step with the GM and other players, so I'll leave the game to them to enjoy as they wish.

Signy- Thank you for the nice reply and acknowledgement.
As a PC (NPC) jumping in after the launch of a campaign, I loved the fact that Signy and Linzi already had "bonding" moments.
I was looking forward to asking you if you had seen a Deer, a Racoon, and a Bear while on your latest forray as my springboard back into the group. But don't worry, I'll find another hook.
My goals with Linzi are to use lots of lyrics from modern pop songs that apply to our current situation. She also likes raunchy lymric songs too (as a part of her NPC background), so looking and finding good wordsmithing will be a big challenge. I'm an 80's music savant, so if you do decide to hang around for Hex exploration and kingdom building - be prepared for Wierd Al, Irish lymrics, and Peter Gabriel.
Faerin Cordova |
So can we have anyone who's actively playing (or will be soon) check in so we see where we stand?

Linzi is ready and waiting for the group at Oleg's. She's kicking herself over and over for letting the rest of you go into the bandit woods without her.
She hopes all of them survives and gets back to Oleg's ASAP!
Linzi is on deack, ready to roleplay.

I'm putting up a post in a few.
