The Great Rinaldo ready to bring justice!
GM Xavier Kahlvet |
If any random person on the forums reads this thread, every player here has participated in Eyes of the Ten, so there will be spoilers within this thread for that scenario series in order to have the opening make sense. You have been warned!
It has been quite some time—months or even years—since you all had to work under the direct orders of the Decemvirate, so when the message came—no matter where you were in the Inner Sea Region or beyond—you were quite surprised to find the Decemvirate request you by name. The message said to meet in a place you all unfortunately became quite familiar with since the Hestram incident: the Sanctum of the Ten in Skyreach. Special single-use command words were included to allow you all to enter the Foyer of Worlds despite not being members of the Ten.
You all arrive in the shadowy Foyer of Worlds appearing as nothing more than indistinct shadows. You move to the basin seeping with pale mist and reach in for the humanoid-shaped eraminho stone and set them orbiting about your head, melting away the shadowy disguise and revealing the portal out of the pocket dimension.
”Greetings, Pathfinders,” the envoys within the stones telepathically say. ”Please make your way to the guest observatory.”
Out of the Foyer and past the pillar of wailing angelic spirits, you make your way to the observatory, the lack of the dead Pathfinders that were present the last time you were here allowing you to appreciate the room’s view of the City at the Center of the World below.
Standing at the window, looking over the sprawling cityscape below, is a person wearing the distinctive dress of the Decemvirate.
”Thank you for meeting on such short notice.” They turn to look at you all.
“A high-ranking Pathfinder has disappeared—I’m sure you remember Osprey. In my investigations I have discovered a series of similar disappearances throughout the Inner Sea region, all of which occurred under similar circumstances. In each case, the missing person was last seen with an attractive stranger, and appeared to be rapt with the new acquaintance’s beauty and charm. Reports in most cases place the missing individual in the company of the same stranger in the Nirmathi city of Skelt, from whence the party is said to have traveled south toward a recently active volcanic ridge called the Growling Skald.
“The Ten’s divinations have located several of those who vanished on the moon. Long have reports spoken of a demon-tainted jungle on the surface of the moon—what we on Golarion see as the Moonscar. It is there that I believe those abducted have been taken, though for what sinister plot I know not. Few have the means to venture into such a realm, which is why I am here, now, with you. Your mission is to travel to the Moonscar, and if you can save not just Osprey, but any other captives of the demons there, then my faith in you has not been misguided. Whatever plan the Moonscar’s Insatiable Queen and her servants have in the works, it has sped up drastically, and I fear for us all should they not be stopped.”
Messa Flutterfoot |
Messa will attempt appropriate knowledge checks, taking 10 if possible. With +2 circumstance bonus from the books and +2 from Clear Ear, most of her knowledge bonuses are 21 or higher (31 with taking 10).
Xanaphia Siannodel |
Xanaphia, a tall, thin, fair-skinned, white-haired, ice-blue-eyed elf dressed in flowing robes of white and ice blue with a silver holy symbol of Saranrae around her neck and a matching symbol tattooed on the back of her left hand, greets each of the other assembled Pathfinders, shaking each of their hands in turn. "Venture-Captain Xanaphia Siannodel; it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance."
She turns to the masked Decemvirate.
”Osprey—how could anyone forget him. And how could he have allowed himself to be taken? This is dire news. Have the Ten determined the identity of any of the others who have been abducted? Perhaps there’s some kind of a connection...”
The Great Rinaldo |
"First Akiton, now the moon ... the fame of The Great Rinaldo is spreading throughout the system!"
More seriously, he muses, "Osprey isn't the sort to just get kidnapped. I wouldn't be surprised if he allowed himself to be taken as part of investigating the issue. Regardless, if Pathfinders are being abducted it is up to us to recover them!"
"So, Akiton was pretty cold and hard to breathe in, like a mountain. What can we expect climate-wise from where we're going?"
"You mentioned Nirmathas, will we be going there first to look for clues, or just bouncing straight to the moon? And how do we get ourselves and our people back once we're done?"
GM Xavier Kahlvet |
Forgot about something: any spoiler in my posts that’s labeled with a character’s name is only public knowledge to the character in question; whether they reveal that information within is up to them.
The Decemvirate member pulls out a short scroll and begins reading from it, despite their mask’s lack of eye holes.
”In addition to Osprey, the disappeared include: Commander Andabar Ceroban of the Knights of Ozem in Lastwall; the Nexian golemcrafter Pendrel Zarafari of Oenopion; Druman Kalistocrat Obenna Sirara; Garrin Levoye of Andoran’s People’s Council; professor Zembe Utomo of the Magaambya; and Chelish noble and famed opera librettist Enlina Charthagnion.” As they finish they hand the scroll to the Seekers for perusal.
”It is your choice how you go about this, but we know the disappeared are on the moon—it would be in your best interest to ignore Nirmathas and save them as soon as possible—but you must find a way to the moon yourself, but if you can think of no way there, perhaps there is a reason why the disappeared were taken to Nirmathas and something there we do not know about.
“As for the climate, the moon shifts between intense heat and bitter cold as the days and nights—which last for weeks at a time—change. Prepare as appropriate.”
Tuwo |
Tuwo is an average looking human in monk's robes but clearly set up as an archer. When he leaves the Foyer of Worlds he glances back and mutters "Like walking over my own grave."
To the group. "I am Tuwo." looking around and not seeing his old friends he shrugs.
Rinaldo has spoken Tuwo's thoughts for him so he just waits for answers.
The Great Rinaldo |
"Hm, perhaps a wand of Endure Elements is in order, then. As for Travel, that's Messa's specialty. I suspect that if she asked, Desna would provide. Do we have any knowledge of where up there to go? Even if she can get us there, we could be hundreds of miles from where we need to be without any information."
GM Xavier Kahlvet |
”That certainly is a possibility, but perhaps the risk just must be taken.”
The Great Rinaldo |
Rinaldo nods. "Well, if I can get to a shop, I'll pick up that wand to help with the temperature. Other than that, I have my gear. I have a clear spindle so I can survive if we don't have access to food, which sadly happens way more often than it should in this line of work. Just need to make sure Colwyn is covered."
Tuwo |
"I have a wand of Endure elements. Will that be enough?"
Tuwo looks at the masked figures. Even his skills cannot pierce their illusions.
"Do you have a way for us to recognize the ones who were abducted and the suspect? Drawings or some type of magic perhaps."
The Great Rinaldo |
"I have a wand of Endure elements. Will that be enough?"
"Depends on how charged it is. Five people will use up a full wand in 10 days. I hope we're not there that long, but always good to be prepared."
GM Xavier Kahlvet |
"Do you have a way for us to recognize the ones who were abducted and the suspect? Drawings or some type of magic perhaps."
Pictures for the disappeared were provided with the names.
Tuwo |
Tuwo studies them carefully then passes them around.
"35 charges. I can get another wand easily enough."
So did Messa's crazy knowledge checks give us any ideas on reaching the moon?
The Great Rinaldo |
(She's here but not on her computer at the moment.) She can cast Greater Teleport to get us there, but without any better ideas, she'll just land us somewhere in the Moonscar, and we'll have to just search. Hopefully we can get some information to narrow it down a bit?
Xanaphia Siannodel |
Xanaphia smiles to herself for a moment. Growling Skald...I think I've been on missions for the society with someone fitting that description. "Perhaps we should make a stop at this Growling Skald and take a look around?"
The Great Rinaldo |
"I'm not familiar with Growling Skald, but if that is where they went, it probably has some useful clues. Unless there is anything else, perhaps we should get started."
I'll go ahead and grab a fresh wand of Endure Elements just to be safe as we're leaving.
Xanaphia Siannodel |
Before the party departs, Xanaphia tracks down Zarta and borrows a scroll of disintegrate.
Faction card thingy.
Xanaphia also drinks a tonic and gains +8 racial bonus to UMD for this adventure.
1-use boon from a chronicle; grants a 1-pt unchained eidolon evolution.
Messa Flutterfoot |
Messa flips through her books and mutters softly to herself. Moonscar...Moonscar...ah, here. "A pocket of an Abyssal jungle that was deposited on the Material Plane. The jungles of the Moonscar were created by accident by Azlanti astronomers who attempted to terraform the moon"--of course they were. Arrogance will be the destruction of us all. She shakes her head. ...ruled by someone called "the Insatiable Queen"...it doesn't say what race she is, but she apparently follows Nocticula, the Demon Lord of night, assassins, and lust, and patroness succubi and shadow demons. Oh, goody. Shadow demons.
Her cousin's boisterous voice interrupts her research--"...the fame of The Great Rinaldo is spreading throughout the system!"-- and the corner of her mouth quirks up in a wry smirk.
I suspect Akiton only remembers the gargantuan wooly mammoth, cousin. But since Truffles isn't coming with us, he can't upstage you this time.
She listens to the other's introductions. Then introduces herself. I'm Messa Flutterfoot, cleric of Desna and Venture Captain of a traveling lodge. I'll do my best to keep us all at our peak and get everyone home safely. Rinaldo's correct--I learned to cast Greater Teleport during my explorer training. I can also cast Locate Creature once we're there.
Greater Teleport and Locate Creature are domain spells for the Exploration Domain.
I also have a wand of endure elements and a scroll of create food and water. We will want some additional provisions for a longer journey. More importantly, we'll want to make sure we're prepared for an Abyssal jungle. And shadow demons.
Sounds like a quick shopping trip and then we're on our way? Tuwo, I know an excellent alchemist's shop with a special section devoted to archers. Have you ever used weapon blanches before?
Tuwo |
"Yes. I have put many spirits to rest with ghost salt blanche."
The Great Rinaldo |
After Messa introduces herself, Rinaldo looks around. "I, of course, need no introduction, but for the sake of formality: I am the master trick rider and voice of the Flying Flutterfoot Family Circus, Venture-Captain of the Pathfinder Society, the one and only ... the Great Rrrrrrrrrinaldo!!"
He says his name with a long trilled "r" and a deep bow.
"On my noble steed, Colwyn, I will dart across the field of battle with my lance, and simultaneously rouse my allies and demoralize the enemy with my sharp wit and great magic."
Yes, Rinaldo's a bit full of himself. Don't take him seriously. Messa definitely doesn't. ;-)
GM Xavier Kahlvet |
Since most are ready to go then I’m just going to continue.
The Growling Skald is an isolated volcanic ridge along the eastern rim of the Mindspin Mountains. Many creatures call the mountain home—magma oozes, fire giants, river drakes in the nearby river—but nothing that couldn’t be easily handled and I’m never given exact numbers of monsters for the encounters.
By fall of night the Pathfinders manage to make their way to the volcano and see a strange sight: When the moon rose in the sky a large stone on the eastern side of the volcano glows with a pale light, activating some kind of magical energy, which swiftly pulses straight to the other side of the volcano before vanishing. The Pathfinders follow the path of the magical energy and find that at its termination point is a deep crevice, a faint purple light glowing from within. Down at the base of the crevice, a hundred feet above roiling magma, is a horizontal pool of bright purple energy that quickly winks out of existence when dawn breaks.
The next evening, when the moon rises in the night sky, the purple energy opens up again, and the team steps through gonna act as if the ioun stone rolls and the buffs of Messa’s were cast right before jumping in.
*
The scent of rot is suffocating in this lush, discolored jungle, and the sounds that permeate the air have a hollow, wet tone. Majestic trees rise from the twisted ground like strange arms, their almost fleshy trunks covered in sinister vining nettles and flowers unlike anything on Golarion. Behind you stands a portal similar to the one at the Growling Skald. As you look up in the sky, where you would expect to see the moon, you instead see a different celestial body: Golarion. You’re on the Moonscar.
”Day” or “Night” on the Moon? 1 is Day: 1d2 ⇒ 2
As you all enter into the bitter cold, you all feel less than you were, the surrounding jungle of sickly purple seems to sap the life right out of you Rinaldo, you take a -2 penalty on all Int-, Wis-, and Cha-based checks. For everyone else that penalty is instead -4. Pregnant ochre flowers hang from trees made of writhing, vaguely fleshy shapes. Jaundiced, fingerlike leaves hang from thorny growths that resemble blistered limbs a dozen feet long. Liver-colored fungal sacks droop flaccidly above a carpet of sepia rot.
The Moonscar has the Enhanced Magic planar trait tied to chaos and evil. (Spells and SLAs with the chaotic and/or evil descriptor are treated as if their caster level were 2 higher than normal.) ADDITIONALLY, the Moonscar has a strong connection to the Demon Lord Nocticula; the save DCs of spells and SLAs of the charm and/or compulsion subschool by 2.
The Moonscar has the Impeded Magic planar trait tied to lawful and good. (To cast a spell or SLA with the lawful and/or good descriptor, the caster must make a DC 20+spell level concentration check or the spell fails.)
Due to the Moonscar’s strange connection to the Abyss, it strongly anchors extraplanar creatures to the Material Plane. Any Abyssal extraplanar outsider gains a +4 bonus on any saving throw made to resist being banished back to the Abyss.
Thus concludes planar traits.
”Well, well, well. Look at the fresh meat that’s come through.”
Above the top of the jungle canopy flies three scaly and slimy bird-like creatures larger than elephants to be clear, this is actually a clearing, so there’s no trees in the way in the way between you and them; i.e. no cover. Around the necks of the creatures are strange-looking saddles, seated in them are three drop-dead gorgeous women with horns on their head, tails on their rears, and wings on their backs. The three women hold bows in their hands that crackle with electricity along the bowstring.
”Oh sisters! Hunting season has begun!”

"Demons, what a surprise! Be of good cheer, Pathfinders! We shall defeat them!"
With a word, Rinaldo's lance appears in his hand. He casts a spell, and the lance shimmers momentarily. He then guides his mount to start climbing into the air.
Swift action to use "called" ability of lance. Move to begin Inspire Courage. Standard to cast "Versatile Weapon", granting the lance the Cold Iron property for 12 minutes. Free to command Colwyn to move. With Air Walk, he can ascend at a 45 degree angle, so he can get 50' up with 100' of movement; he'll run in a spiral to get height without moving too far away.

Noting the electricity crackling down the bows, Messa reaches into her her sack and pulls out a scroll of resist energy.
Casting communal resist energy, electricity at CL 5 (10 points). If she can catch everyone before they disappear or run off, she'll hit everyone for 10 min.
GM Xavier Kahlvet |
Ah. So that’s how ridiculous zen archers get. Jeez. Also, it's just 1d6 electricity, so I won't bother rolling it.
Tuwo sends a barrage of arrows up to the succubi, downing one after a mere two shots and absolutely decimating the next.
The two succubi turn to one another and speak to one another.
Blue casts an SLA and vanishes.
Red shoots a volley of arrows toward Tuwo!

"One of them took off, probably to alert others to our presence. Take out the last one, and perhaps we can get their mounts to simply leave! "
Leaving Tuwo to shoot at the remaining demon, Rinaldo turns his attention to the mounts. Backing up in midair, he says calmly, "You don't even want to be here, do you? If you want to fly away, we'll let you! We'll even help you by killing the demons for you!"
Not sure if it can understand him; regardless, I'll use my round on an attempt to "push" one or more of them to leave.
