Are we doing background skills? I doubt any of them will be useful in a campaign like this, but I figured I'd ask just in case.

Perform is a background skill which contributes to your performance combat checks. I imagine every PC will have perform of some sort or another.

Torsten’s stats are just about done. A barely higher that 25pt roll was just enough to make a fun psychic warrior. As per his style, in close combat his infusion will take the form of creating a longsword to fight with. Will get the backstory up soon.

Really loving the idea of an adventure where we are enslaved to the Drow. Sounds like a lot of fun.

Incidentally, Torsten, if you're going to take that Telekinetic Adept feature, you won't be able to take Ironskinned because it replaces the Enlarge Person spell-like ability.

Whoops, missed that, sorry. :/

Okay, so I'm zeroing in on Brevka the Beauty, oiled up martial and arcane powerhouse.

I can whip up what she was doing before the pits, but, I imagine that's more likely to be revealed as she gets to know the other new gladiators. More immediately, I see her role in the ring as being the 'Barbaric Princess of the North' - aside from the shtick of her costuming and billing, her refusal to quit, or to lie down and die gives her real comeback potential, and good comebacks make for good Faces. :-)

Basic Details:
Arcane Bloodrager (Primalist, Spell-Eater)

Campaign and Style Traits:
Peregrinus and Sex Symbol

Str 18+2
Dex 13
Con 17
Int 9
Wis 10
Cha 13

I'll finish up a statblock and toss her into this alias's profile soon

Let's see what the dice gods have in store as I toss my hat in the ring.

Set 1: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 1, 6) = 12 - 1 = 11
Set 2: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 5, 3) = 14 - 2 = 12
Set 3: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 6, 2) = 11 - 1 = 10
Set 4: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 5, 3) = 16 - 2 = 14
Set 5: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 3, 4) = 14 - 2 = 13
Set 6: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 2, 6) = 17 - 2 = 15

18 point buy by rolling? No thanks! 25 it is.

I'm thinking of an arcanist of the collegiate variety, backstory below.

Backstory:
His pilgrimage to the jungle’s center of enlightenment complete, the elf Xyveth Onadae had hope in his life. Maybe there’s something I can do for my home now. If I can’t stop the fighting, at least I can help the injured. Home in the Sodden Lands was torn by conflict, raids from pirates, guerrilla tactics from the Mwangi Expanse, and disease had left the denizens in despair. When Xyveth left, may assumed he simply fled for better lands, never to be seen again. His intention was to study at Magaambya, to bring potent magic back to his home. While his journey there was taxing, he did survive. Unfortunately, despite the great potential within him, the instructors said he could not follow on the path of the High Sun just yet; he would need more worldly experience. A poison-tipped dart striking him in the night was start of all the experience he would ever need.

Xyveth mildly remembered being dragged through caves by the sound of it, carried and carted at times, and beaten – though with only superficial injuries – at others. His captors had blindfolded him though, so he could not tell who they were. It was clear whoever these people wanted him alive for some reason. Maybe they’ll have me work as a slave. Maybe a sacrifice. Maybe… Never would he have expected the drow sought to use him as entertainment, to amuse themselves at how those with the best intentions would break when cast into the unending trials of the abyss. This wasn’t clear to Xyveth at first, but between the blindfold being removed, his spellbook being preserved, and the blue-skinned b%*#@ lording herself over a group of the captives, the fog of darkness became illuminated crystal: House Volatexia wanted a show.

Well, I’ll give them a show, but mine’s going to have a surprise ending!

He’d need to bide his time, use the others, get his hands dirty, and crack some skulls for their amusement. Xyveth didn’t relish the idea. Truth be told, he didn’t think he’d survive. The wizard’s will burned hot though, hot enough to power his perseverance. Yet would mettle be enough to beat the metal of the Underdark? Time would tell…

The idea with Xyveth is he's going to be someone the realms of darkness, especially the drow, will love to break. Many will assume he is some sort of divine caster given his aura of good, but he is not. While he may be seen with a bow in the arena (Sagittarius), utility casting and healing will be more his go-to in groups. Since one can't always fight in groups though, he may have to play dirty to get an edge. If he's chosen, and if he survives the scraps in the dark caverns of the world, he may come to believe bringing light to the dark places is a true calling of his - or he may become corrupt and stray from his path to a much more wicked side.

Please let me know if you feel this idea could work in your setting. I'm more than happy to complete a crunch if so.

sounds super interesting, dropping a dot and stats

Rolls: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 1, 2) = 10
Rolls: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 2, 3) = 10
Rolls: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 1, 3) = 11

Rolls: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 6, 6) = 18
Rolls: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 4, 2) = 12
Rolls: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 2, 1) = 12

oof... those rolls. think i'll go with the 25 point buy pretty sure that qualifies as sub par.

i have an idea for a character already actually... i think. either way super interested in this campaign

Magus or arcane duelist bard

The idea he is the quiet skilled type, good to look at but awkward when not in combat. resourceful and uses whats available to win fights. Also as an aside he enjoys singing

Problem slave

He's stubborn, has a morale compass and hope still. couple that with being a survivor. He's the quiet defiant type, the kind that doesnt give them the satisfaction.

Background:

”Ye be asking who I be? Fair enough. Name’s Torsten, Clan Runeforger. Aye, I’m a slave here. Bloody stupid question. ‘Course I’m a slave. Only a complete idgit would volunteer for this. Did YE sign up for this? Nay. Didn’t think so. So what’s it to ye? Fine. I’ll tell ye me story if it gets ye to leave me alone.”

Torsten is a Deurgar who comes from the watered down bloodline of the tyrants of his people. A child of a broken clan who have fallen far, far from grace. Having lost a bid for power within Fellstrok. When faced with annihilation, the clan fled with what little resources they could gather. They eventually settled near Zirnakaynin, within ancient ruins abandoned during the Quest of Sky. There they hunkered down, using the nearby Drow city as protection from grudge-filled kin. For generations they have remained mostly hidden, coming out only to carefully trade fine Deurgar steel.

Torsten is a Deurgar who carries in him the blood of would-be kings. He relies almost completely on his psychic powers, which are admittedly formidable. Able to move objects with his mind, and to blast apart both stone and people with a thought, he believed himself in to be truly blessed. But such powers came at a steep cost. He was unable to manifest the more normal forms of Deurgar magic. Namely Invisibility.

It was just that weakness which led to his capture by the Drow. He and his fellows were investigating a fortuitous find of ore, when a Drow slaver came across them. The others were able to vanish, but Torsten was only able to hide. And when he was found, he was enslaved.

Torsten proved to be a difficult slave. He always performed his tasks as told. Exactly as told. No more, no less. And as he was a mediocre liar, it was always obvious he what had happened. It was a difficult position for his master. The Drow had paid much for a slave with the psychic powers that Torsten possessed, but getting him to work competently was nearly impossible. And the more torture and torment put upon him, the more stubborn he got.

Finally, the Drow sold Torsten to the pits. While he was tempted to have the Deurgar killed in a most painful way, the slave had cost too much to justify. The only way to recuperate his losses was to trick some other fool into wasting his money. And the pits were the best way to do that while also promising Torsten a bloody death.

Personality
Torsten is blunt, brash and straightforward. Like all Deurgar, he has a tendency to be taciturn, and can rub non-deurgar the wrong way. But he is smart enough to know just how far to push it, and when it is best to keep his mouth shut.

(Diplomacy +1 Bluff +1 Intimidate +2)

With that said, he is a bitter and untrusting soul. He holds no love for his captors, his fellow slaves, his own people or even his god. In his experience, his everyone is out to get him and will turn on him when it suits them.

Party role: Torsten is a switch hitter. Full BaB with close combat and ranged options. Out of combat his psychic abilities allow him to use disable device at a distance and to move objects with his mind. If the party needs it, at lvl3 he can go VMC Rogue for Trapfinding:

I'm just calling this out because I feel like a brief "sure" to a pretty significant change for character builds is going to get missed by some people. And I want to make sure that everyone knows what that is and that we're all talking about the same thing.

Yep, that's what I meant. Thanks for catching that.

@Dragoncat is there a Peregrinus option that would allow a rapier?

Edit: Oh! Elephant in the Room feat taxes makes a huge difference to what we can build thats functional at low level. Particularly since per the performance combat rules a successful combat maneuver allows a performance combat check.

@FangDragon: IIRC, both elves and drow have Weapon Familiarity with rapiers.

Background:
(Do please note that this background is intentionally lose so as to be more malleable and allow for background overlap with other characters.)

From an early age Esseli expressed great magical talent. Before she could even walk, the infant girl would conjure toy-sized elemental to play with, much to the joy of her mage parents and extended family. As she grew, one of these “toys” grew alongside her, an earth elemental by she dubbed Ehmet. Ehmet became more sophisticated in thought and form as Esseli developed into a stunningly gorgeous young woman. Funnily enough, this seems to have given the elemental a jealous streak, as he has not been very kind to the many suitors she has attracted over the years.

Esseli’s clan has been a fixture of Nex for centuries. Skilled in the arcane arts, her family tree boasts numerous stand-out scholars, diviners, and mages of all kinds. With that pedigree, and her skill in conjuration evident in her earthen “bodyguard,” she found no issue in entering one of Nex’s prestigious magic institutions. There she learned the finer points of spellcraft and summoning, though she never did find any interest in the more traditional forms of study. She was far more interested in maintaining her family’s image of her as a up-and-coming prodigy, and her full-honors graduation did little to shake that image.

For six years after her graduation, Esseli joined expeditions into the wastes of Nex, trying to help solve the nation’s persistent food shortage. Her thought was that, since Ehmet was an earth elemental, he might be able to give some insight into how the land was damaged. Her family was skeptical of this idea, but approved nonetheless. On one of these expeditions however, her life would be thrown entirely off-course.

In the dead of the night, as Esseli and her caravan were camping near the mouth of a cavern, something happened. Something beneath the sands collapsed, and in moments the campsite began to seemingly drain into the cavern, the sounds of shattering stone and thousands of pounds of sand echoing from it like an unholy creature. Despite her best efforts, Esseli was dragged into the cave’s maw. She would awake in the Darklands, her hands bound as she was transported by the drow to Zirnakaynin.

Now, after being forcibly trained in the ways of the gladius and actively refusing magical teachings from her captors, Esseli stands upon the threshold of her first gladiatorial match. She is more than a little fearful, but rests somewhat assured knowing that, if nothing else, she can count on Ehmet. "Let's hope you're enough big-guy..."

Brarg - The Dog
CE Male Gnoll Fighter (Gladiator)
18, 14, 16, 12, 13, 10
Sex Symbol, Peregrinus.

For his fighting style he uses a heavy flail and wears the Gladiator’s chain shirt. I have to rework the character sheet I made up because I initially made him a Barbarian but decided to swap to fighter.

Background:
Brarg remembers little before the pits. Sold into slavery by his pack at a young age left him extremely bitter and distrustful. At first he was a novel pet, chained to a pillar or walked around by the matron of the house to amuse guests. The arrangement ended when the novelty finally wore off. By his 8th year of life Brarg was equal in size to most warriors and surprisingly powerful, so his masters sold him to fight in the arena.

4d6 - 1 ⇒ (2, 1, 6, 6) - 1 = 14
4d6 - 2 ⇒ (3, 2, 4, 5) - 2 = 12
4d6 - 5 ⇒ (6, 5, 6, 6) - 5 = 18
4d6 - 3 ⇒ (4, 3, 6, 6) - 3 = 16
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (2, 3, 1, 1) - 1 = 6
4d6 - 4 ⇒ (6, 5, 5, 4) - 4 = 16

I can work with that. Since lots of people are already going the Sex Symbol route, I'm thinking a divine caster with Furtive Follower and Murmillo traits. I have a busy weekend coming up so I likely won't have a chance to make a character until Monday or Tuesday at the earliest.

EDIT: Considering an oracle or shaman.

Artemis Roen Backstory:

Who is he?

Artemis Roen was brought into slavery from a young age, being from a family of gypsies. He was initially kept for his talent, beauty, and singing voice... a real treasure, unfortunately for them, they didnt know his attitude

He gave his first master real trouble, though never voiced his back sass his actions show it. Slowly doing his work, following it to the letter rather than the meaning, playing dumb ...Artemis very rarely speaks out loud, except when singing.

He works hard and is generally a survivor, helps when he can without jeopardizing his own life.

despite his rather flashy fighting style, he's not much of a show off.

Artemis has been a slave for a long time, despite the hardship, torture and darkness he tries to not let it cloud his judgement and morality. he keeps hope and that hope has not yet been broken

Sovereign Court

Linus Volso

background:
Linus's had a harsh upbringing. His father instilled a ruthlessness in him starting at a young age. at 15 he was sent to one of the Restov dueling academies to train. Though he excelled in combat, his ruthless nature and win at any cost tactics did little to ingratiate him with his instructors. However, Linus was also adept at disguising this trait with a smooth public facade. But in practice his charming veneer would slip and he was constantly being reprimanded for unnecessary brutality against his opponents.

With some reservations, his academy passed him and he earned the title of Aldori. But his manner did not go unnoticed by certain people. Worried that his cruel nature would blacken the Aldori name, arrangements were made for his abduction by those that would ensure that he would not be a problem. The gladiatorial pits of the Drow were always looking for exotic fighters and an Aldori would make an interesting addition to the arena.

Quick question, the Automatic Bonus Progression is with or without magic?

Just saw this and it looks really interesting. I've got a couple ideas already, but let's see if the dice are working with me...

4d6 - 1 ⇒ (4, 2, 1, 4) - 1 = 10
4d6 - 2 ⇒ (5, 6, 5, 2) - 2 = 16
4d6 - 3 ⇒ (3, 5, 5, 3) - 3 = 13
4d6 - 4 ⇒ (6, 4, 4, 5) - 4 = 15
4d6 - 1 ⇒ (1, 6, 2, 3) - 1 = 11
4d6 - 2 ⇒ (4, 2, 6, 6) - 2 = 16

16, 16, 15, 13, 11, 10... Definitely workable. I'll figure out a plan and post back!

@Galahad0430: the Automatic Bonus Progression system grants enhancement, deflection and resistance bonuses to PCs as they level up, as well as allowing their stats to be improved more often than they normally would be levelling up.

It's essentially taking the incremental bonuses for magic items and weapons and streamlining them into your character, allowing me to offer you more interesting magic gear as rewards.

You can check here for more information.

Also, so many Sex Symbols for PCs here... y'all are thirsty. XD

Quick question on kobolds: do the kobold tail attachment function as light weapons or as modificactions to a natural attack, or both depending on the situation?

We will be a hurricane of sexiness and murder.
So this is mostly completed, still missing one feat

@snapzilla22: This seems to indicate that kobold tail attachments are a light weapon that modifies a tail slap attack, should you choose to go that route.

I blame the high charisma I rolled... and that drow are dirty perverts for all the sexy bastards we have here :)

Though I am actually going to make up a Fixer based Aasimar Druid.

You said the plan is to level to 10 eventually correct? Should have the charector done by the end of the day.

@TheNine: Yep, planning to have this go to Level 10. Maybe longer if folks are interested.

Im kind of interested let me think of it.
roll: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 5, 2) = 10
roll: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 2, 2) = 10
roll: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 2, 5) = 14
roll: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 6, 3) = 11
roll: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 2, 5) = 15
roll: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 2, 1) = 8

Ahem, this sums it up, i think.

Mine is coming along nicely. Should be complete today. Tomorrow at the latest.

Dragoncat, I have a question about some of your Style Traits (which I'm loving, by the way). I'll use Murmillo as an example, but it applies to a lot of them.

Quote:
Murmillo: This is a more defensive style, using a gladius and heavy steel shield. You’ve trained for so long with the shield that it no longer interferes with your movement. You do not take any armour check penalties when using a heavy shield.

In this instance, is everything but the last sentence flavor, or is it a requirement for the trait ability named in the last sentence. In other words, would a PC have to wield a gladius and heavy steel shield to be able to forego the ACP when wielding a heavy shield?

This same line of questioning could apply to other style traits, such as Andabata, Hoplomachus, Retiarius, and Thraex.

Btw Torsten, i would have thought a warpriest of Korada would shine down there. Heavy axes and all that. ;)

Haha! Perhaps he would. But I imagine prospetyzing in the underdark without a halfway decent Diplomacy modifier would lead to a short and bloody sermon for everyone involved. :D

((To everyone else: this was in reference to a previous campaign, involving a half-orc warpriest of Korada who was very likely to beat someone to death while screaming about love and redemption. Chyrone was a great DM who put up with said shenanigans ))

@Andostre: They're flavour, for the most part. I intended for them to reflect the specialized training the PCs received during their stay. For example, a PC with the Murmillo trait would never take armour check penalties when he uses a heavy shield.

Does that make things clearer?

It does, thanks. That's what I was assuming, but I wanted to be sure. I'd hate to find out I was wrong in the middle of the first combat.

Heyo it's Archae

finishing Artemis soon.

Arcane Archer type, support caster, Catfolk

Everything will be in the profile.

@GM Are the bows from Sagittarius composite pr just normal bow?

@Artemis Roen: The bows are normal bows, to start. But if you manage to upgrade to a composite version, the trait's effect still carries over.

4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 4, 5) = 17 14
4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 2, 5) = 10 9
4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 2, 3) = 14 12
4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 2, 6) = 12 10
4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 5, 6) = 20 17
4d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 6, 2) = 18 16

DragonCat, are dhampirs ok?

This looks fun.

Roll 1: 4d6 - 2 ⇒ (2, 5, 3, 3) - 2 = 11
Roll 2: 4d6 - 1 ⇒ (6, 2, 1, 4) - 1 = 12
Roll 3: 4d6 - 2 ⇒ (4, 6, 4, 2) - 2 = 14
Roll 4: 4d6 - 2 ⇒ (4, 6, 6, 2) - 2 = 16
Roll 5: 4d6 - 4 ⇒ (6, 4, 5, 5) - 4 = 16
Roll 6: 4d6 - 4 ⇒ (4, 4, 5, 5) - 4 = 14

That looks like a 33....I'll take it! Now to look at some mad, mad classes.

Edit: tentative plans for a Belkzen War Drummer Skald. Our opponents will feel our rage!

@Chyrone: Yes.
