Round 8

Nyym

Nyym takes this moment to pop a potion to deal with the bleed effect and get some health back. In his current state, he was in no shape to rejoin the fight.

cmw: 2d8 + 3 ⇒ (7, 8) + 3 = 18

As he basks in the curative effects of the potion (taking great delight that his blood has thickened once again to the point that it is no longer spilling as freely as before from his wounds), Nyym notes the determined look on etched Liesel-Marie's face as her gaze follows the path taken by the vampire savage.

After drinking a Cure Moderate Wounds potion, Nyym regains 18 hp, and is both Wounded and energy drained. He currently has 44 hit points and a max total of 62 hit points. He suffers a -3 penalty on his attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, ability checks, and caster level as well as a -2 penalty to AC, and a -1 penalty on combat maneuver checks and Combat Maneuver Defense. Due to the magical healing he has received, Nyym no longer suffers from bleed.

Liesel-Marie

Liesel-Marie Frostvale wrote:
Liesel-Marie whirls around, barely registering the lightning coursing through her. Seeing the vampire reconstitute in its humanoid form near the wall, she hefts IcingDeath and follows.

Mardut watches as the Erutaki turns and begins a long-legged stride his way, waiting for her to draw nearer. When she does, the orc clutches the axe he bears in his left hand even as he curls the fingers of his right into a massive fist and unleashes a backhanded strike at Liesel-Marie.

Standard Action: uses readied action to attack with a slam attack using bleeding blow and vitality drain

Mardut slam attack: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (11) + 16 = 27; -3 due to Wounded threshold
slam damage: 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 plus 1 point of bleed damage and 1 negative level
electricity damage: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 2) = 3

Liesel-Marie's head is snapped back by both the speed and fierceness of the savage vampire's hit, forcing her to plant both feet to keep from falling back. However, she does not stop the swing of IcingFlame, her intent to use the fiery bearded black axe to split Mardut in two apparent despite the pained grimace she now bears.

The orc nods at her effort with both appreciation and respect, proclaiming: Morth al nothok!
Translation for those who understand Orcspeech: Your heart is that of an orc!

Liesel-Marie Frostvale wrote:

Attack: 1d20 + 17 - 3 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 17 - 3 + 2 = 22 Bloodrage, Power Attack, Charge

Damage: 1d12 + 35 + 3d6 ⇒ (1) + 35 + (1, 4, 3) = 44 Bloodrage, Power Attack, Vital Strike, Searing Flesh

While IcingFlame is brought to bear with all the might she can muster, the amount of electrical energy coursing through Liesel-Marie is such that not even she can overcome it. The Erutaki experiences an involuntary muscle twitch in her arms halfway through the swing, forcing her to adjust the weapon's arc to compensate. It is the smallest of opportunities, but one that Mardut gleefully exploits as he shifts (with both preternatural quickness and skill) his own axe from the left hand to his now open right and into the path of IcingFlame to knock it aside using the wings of the axe head.

Liesel-Marie sustains 8 points of damage: 6 from the slam attack (-1 due to damage reduction) and 3 from the electricity damage.

In addition, she is also suffering from bleed damage, which Liesel-Marie receives at the start of her turn. She will continue to lose 1 hit point at the beginning of her turn until the bleeding is be stopped, either by a DC 15 Survival check or through the application of any spell that cures hit point damage.

Finally, Liesel-Marie suffers a –1 penalty on all ability checks, attack rolls, combat maneuver checks, Combat Maneuver Defense, saving throws, and skill checks as well as having her current and total hit points reduced by 5 due to receiving a negative level. She is also treated as one level lower for the purpose of level-dependent variables (such as spellcasting) for each negative level possessed. If Liesel-Marie's negative levels equal or exceed her total Hit Dice, she dies.

So, in summation, Liesel-Marie is both Wounded and energy drained. She currently has 51 hit points and a max total of 75 hit points. She suffers a -3 penalty on her attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, ability checks, and caster level as well as a -2 penalty to AC, and a -1 penalty on combat maneuver checks and Combat Maneuver Defense. She is also suffering from bleed damage, which will lower her current hit point total to 50 at the start of her next turn.

As a result of his readied action, Mardut's place in the initiative order has shifted so that now he goes just before Liesel-Marie.

Catching sight of the freestanding staircase, the gunmarshall makes his way over and begins his ascent, going about halfway up before stopping to take aim with Judge and squeezing off another round.

The sting of the silver bullet piercing through Mardut's flesh gives way to a now familiar searing pain. But the savage orc cannot take his attention away from the one standing before him to seek out the bearer of the silver that has been hurting him so.

That will have to come later when he has dealt with the fiery warrior woman.

Using Judge, Colt inflicts 13 points of damage on Mardut, who only sustains 12 points due to his barbarian damage reduction, for a total of 105 damage. He is Wounded, and suffers a -2 penalty on his attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, ability checks, AC and caster level.

Thanks to his quick recovery judgement, Colt recovers 1 point of damage, placing his current hit points at 46. This puts him at the Healthy threshold, taking no penalty on his attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, ability checks, AC and caster level.

Using Sable Moon, Tsadok inflicts 18 points of damage on Mardut, who only sustains 17 points due to his barbarian damage reduction, for a total of 122 damage. He is Wounded, and suffers a -2 penalty on his attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, ability checks, AC and caster level.

Mardut remembers the sudden appearance before of this strange pale-skinned half-breed from before all too well, the one wielding the black ringed blade. He isn't sure what to make of Tsadok, at least not at first. But his continued presence only serves to fuel his already potent rage even further. His plans do not include this mal karash, this oath breaker.

Duluk, dukhal! he says with a gutteral growl while lashing out with yet another backfist at this newest arrival. Translation for those who understand Orcspeech: Beware, bastard!

Mardut slam attack of opportunity: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (15) + 19 = 34; -2 due to Wounded threshold
slam damage: 1d4 + 12 ⇒ (2) + 12 = 14

Tsadok sustains 8 points of physical damage (14 points minus the 6 temporary hit points he had remaining), and 3 electrical damage, which leaves the dhampir with 34 hit points and at the Wounded threshold. He takes a -2 penalty on his attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks, as well as to AC and caster level.

The blow catches Tsadok on his back, just below the neck. Had the dhampir been someone of lesser stature, the hit would surely have broken bones. Be that as it may, the sudden jolt of electrical energy from the strike, combined with his own inertia, is enough to throw off his thrust with Sable Moon.

Meir
The native of Ustalav looks over at his younger sister and sees that, while she is somewhat eager to rejoin the fray, it is being tempered by her concern for him.

Go on, says Meir. I'll join up once I've taken care of a little matter here.

As he speaks, Meir produces a glass flask containing a clear liquid from one of his belt pouches. He moves over to where the enormous black wolf lay on the ground, the top of Nyym's wooden stake protruding from its chest. After removing the seal, he begins pouring the liquid on the canid's head, all while reciting a prayer to the Lady of Graves. When Meir is finished, he drops the empty flask and grips the scythelike blade of his weapon in preparation of what must be done next to ensure that this undead creature will no longer arise to torment the living.

And so, she waits, standing quietly behind him.

Nyym wrote:

By choosing to delay, Nyym takes no action and then acts normally on whatever initiative count he decides to act. When you delay, you voluntarily reduce your own initiative result for the rest of the combat. When your new, lower initiative count comes up later in the same round, you can act normally. You can specify this new initiative result or just wait until some time later in the round and act then, thus fixing your new initiative count at that point.

You never get back the time you spend waiting to see what’s going to happen. You also can’t interrupt anyone else’s action (as you can with a readied action).Your initiative result becomes the count on which you took the delayed action. If you come to your next action and have not yet performed an action, you don’t get to take a delayed action (though you can delay again). If you take a delayed action in the next round, before your regular turn comes up, your initiative count rises to that new point in the order of battle, and you do not get your regular action that round.

Next up is...

Aiko
Up above the battle, the samurai dashes along the wider wallwalk leading back to the guardroom of the southern tower. As she enters the open door, Aiko adjusts her run to exit out onto a narrower battlement. Looking over the side, she makes out a staircase leading down to the inner ward.

Without hesitation, the noble Minkan warrior leaps over the side to land in a crouch about halfway down. Drawing the swords of her daisho, she rises, determined to arrive and help out her companions.

Next up is...

Mardut
Laughing maniacally, the sinister orc's eyes dart from side to side as he tries to decide which foe he wants to tear apart.

The softskin with the heart of an orc, she who would make a fine bride. Or will it be the bastard, the oathbreaker?

His decision made, Mardut issues a lustful howl as he swings his axe...

I'm going to 'flip' a coin.... heads (1) the attack goes to Liesel-Marie... tails (2) it goes to Tsadok...

Heads or Tails: 1d2 ⇒ 1

Full-Round Action: Full Attack with greataxe using bleeding blow

Mardut greataxe attack 1: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (16) + 20 = 36; -2 due to Wounded threshold
greataxe damage: 1d12 + 14 ⇒ (12) + 14 = 26; plus 1 point of bleed damage

Liesel-Marie sustains 26 points of physical damage (as she already suffers from bleed, it does not stack with itself). This leaves her currently with 24 hit points and at the Wounded threshold. She suffers a -3 penalty on her attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, ability checks, and caster level as well as a -2 penalty to AC, and a -1 penalty on combat maneuver checks and Combat Maneuver Defense.

Quickly, the Erutaki brings IcingFlame up with both hands, catching Mardut's axe with the thick haft of her weapon. Such is the force behind the orc's swing that Liesel-Marie's arms grow numb even as the shock of the weapon's impact tears at the accumulated wounds on her body.

You rely on the strength of your weapon to protect you? It will not! Fight with me! Show this dukhal that the heart of a nothok beats within you!

The light in the eyes of the orc flaring like red lanterns as his bloodlust begins to overwhelm him, Mardut raises his axe once more then swiftly brings it down again.

Mardut greataxe attack 2: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (20) + 15 = 35; -2 due to Wounded threshold
Critical Confirmation: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (17) + 15 = 32
greataxe damage: 1d12 + 14 ⇒ (4) + 14 = 18; +12 damage due to crit

As before, she blocks the powerful chop from Mardut's axe. But in the end, the savage strength of the orc vampire proves too much for Liesel-Marie to fully withstand as she is brought down to one knee, the weight of the blow creating a large hollow in the ground beneath her. When Mardut pulls back his weapon, IcingFlame clatters to the ground as his opponent's arms fall down to her sides.

Mardut roars in anguish, then says, Is that it? Is that limit of your heart?

Liesel-Marie sustains 30 points of physical damage, which leaves her currently with -6 hit points. She is both disabled and at the Critical threshold. At this point, especially when taking into consideration that the bleed effect automatically cause her to fail any Constitution check to stabilize, the situtation does not bode well for the Erutaki Warrior Princess. Unless she receives some kind of aid, Liesel-Marie has exactly 10 rounds before bleeds out and dies. It is important to note that she is still conscious and thus able to act. As a disabled character, she may take a single move action or standard action each round (but not both, nor can she take full-round actions, but she can still take swift, immediate, and free actions). She can move at half speed. Taking move actions doesn’t risk further injury, but performing any standard action (or any other action the DM deems strenuous, including some free actions such as casting a Quicken Spell spell) deals 1 point of damage after the completion of the act. Unless the action increases the disabled character’s hit points, she would be further in negative hit points and dying (meaning that she will lapse into unconsciuosness).

Next up is...

Oloch
Unable to keep up with the speed of the strange warrior woman due to the restrictive nature of his armor, Oloch follows as best he can. When he enters the guardroom, rather than go through the same way that Aiko does, the warrior-priest insteads hangs a right, which takes him to the guard platform and the massive corpse of the giant that had been stationed there.

The orc struggles, but eventually makes it past the enormous body and onto the walkway leading to the northern tower and the guardroom on the other side.

Round 8
Liesel-Marie

Quote:

As before, she blocks the powerful chop from Mardut's axe. But in the end, the savage strength of the orc vampire proves too much for Liesel-Marie to fully withstand as she is brought down to one knee, the weight of the blow creating a large hollow in the ground beneath her. When Mardut pulls back his weapon, IcingFlame clatters to the ground as his opponent's arms fall down to her sides.

Mardut roars in anguish, then says, Is that it? Is that limit of your heart?

She rasps, still clutching the bearded axe's haft, ”Hardly, spawn. Prepare to die a final time.”

Mardut grins, a sight made all the more ominous by both his lack of lips as well as the hooks and piercings in the orc's face contorting it into a revolting expression.

Colt smiles grimly and takes another shot.

judge: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (8) + 13 = 211d8 + 6 + 13 ⇒ (8) + 6 + 13 = 27

Point blank shot, firing into melee, deadly aim, move action to reload. Brings him to 6 in the chamber for Jury and one left in the chamber for Judge.

As the bullet streaks towards the undead orc, Colt is already nimbly placing a loading ring against the back of Jury’s cylinder, and with a flick of his wrist, there is a satisfying click as the cartridges lock home.

Mardut looms over Liesel-Marie, still leering frightfully down at the Erutaki, when his head snaps back as the silver bullet fired from Judge crashes through the center of the vampire's brow. As he lowers his head back down, the orc's expression is now one of confusion and pain. The bullet is already being slowly pushed back out the way that it entered, through the hole in his forehead, eventually falling at the feet of the sinister savage.

Using Judge, Colt inflicts 27 points of damage on Mardut, who only sustains 26 points due to his barbarian damage reduction, for a total of 148 damage. He is Critical, and suffers a -3 penalty on his attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, ability checks, AC and caster level.

Replaying each previous exchange with Mardut in his mind, Tsadok decides to redirect his attacks. Not at the overall largeness of the orc vampire's body, but rather at specific points on his target.

His arms.

Wielding his blade horizontally behind the back with one hand while the other is held forwards but bent at the elbow so that it was held out before his opponent, the dhampir spins, timing his swing so that it was tighter like the single edge of a screw, which allows Tsadok to bypass Mardut's axe and slice the savage orc twice on his bicep.

Using Sable Moon, Tsadok inflicts 14 points of damage on Mardut, who only sustains 12 points due to his barbarian damage reduction, for a total of 160 damage. He is Critical, and suffers a -3 penalty on his attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, ability checks, AC and caster level.

With an annoyed grunt, Mardut glares at the wounds just given him by Tsadok. Mere scratches, he thinks when the hairs on the back of his neck and on the back of his arms begin to stand up on end. The savage vampire casts his gaze about, knowing that in heat of the battle, he had forgotten about one other foe: the grey-skinned nothokari.

The orc turns just in time to have his chest pierced by a pair of wooden stakes by Nyym as he had earlier. Only this time, one of them actually made its way into his heart. His face frozen in wide-eyed shock, Mardut collapses heavily to the ground.

Using wooden stakes, Nyym inflicts 20 points of damage on Mardut, who only sustains 18 points due to his barbarian damage reduction, for a total of 178 damage. But with those two shots, finally the savage vampire is slain. However, the orc will return to life if the stake is removed, unless his head is severed and anointed with holy water.

Charlotte, Meir, and Kyt quickly make their way over to where the rag-tag trio of Liesel-Marie, Nyym, and Tsadok are.

The elf arrives first, a look of concern etched upon her winsome face. Sister... she begins, wanting to reach out and embrace the kneeling Erutaki, but not sure if she should. ...are you alright?

The siblings arrive next, but they are accompanied by another who has, up to this point, been missing from the brutal affair.

Aiko!

A look of relief replaces the expression that previously marked Kyt's features.

Stand aside. All of you. Let me see what I can do here.

Sheathing her blades, the Minkan samurai gives Liesel-Marie a critical eye even as she kneels next to the warrior, her hands now limned with a golden light.

Lay on Hands: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 6, 5) = 21; she also receives the following mercies: diseased (acts as remove disease [CL 9th]), fatigued (The target is no longer fatigued), and injured (gains fast healing 3 for 4 rounds).

Liesel-Marie receives 33 points of healing from Aiko's lay on hands: 21 directly from the lay on hands itself, and 12 from the fast healing. This brings the still injured Erutaki to 27 hit points.

As Aiko tends to her patient, Meir approaches the staked corpse of Mardut. He retrieves his tools, immediately setting to work and pouring the liquid on the orc's head, all while reciting a prayer to the Lady of Graves. When he is finished, the dark-haired Ustalav rises while dropping the empty flask even as Charlotte steps up, one of her hands sporting claws. The girl kneels and cleanly performs the grusesome task of beheading undead creature. She rises, looking up at her brother, who nods his approval.

Nearby is a place where we can all gain a measure of respite, says Meir as he directs the group's attention to the chapel. I'm sure the sole occupant will not mind us doing so.

As he speaks, Rocnork lands next to Tsadok. Not long after, Oloch emerges from the nearby northern tower.

Good, calls out Aiko. This one needs more care than I can provide here. As I'm sure most of you do. Oloch and I can hopefully do what we can once we're inside.

I'm sure Chaplain Blix will offer what assitance he can, especially if doing so will aid him in achieving the rest that he craves.

Meir's words catches the usually unflappable Aiko by surprise. Chaplain... Blix? As in Fabian Blix?

The dark-haired young man nods. Is he known to you?

I know it only because the person you speak of is the ancestor of someone dear to me. The samurai's face contorts as she experiences a range of emotions. But as quickly as they appear, Aiko's expression becomes calm once again.

Aiko regains her feet, her gaze now fixed on the chapel.

After sifting through the ashes that are Mardut's remains, the dhampir finds the following items: a fine gold chain from which hangs seven small sealed crystal vials (ampoules) containing preserved liquid blood*, a greataxe, an elaborately decorated ring crafted with the design of a fierce dragon wrapped greedily around a shining gemstone**, and a pouch containing 180 gold sails.

Rocnork nods in acknowledgement. I only did what was necessary. Nothing more.

If there is nothing else, then we shall continue on...

As the group approaches the building, each notices letters scrawled in red paint across the pair of wooden doors. As they draw closer, all of them are able to make out that there are two distinct sets of markings put the entryway.

Translation for those able to read Giantspeak and/or Orcspeak: "Keep Out! Vengeful spirit inside!

Beyond the oaken double doors lies a faded white paint peels from the dust-coated walls of this grand, vaulted chamber. Several sturdy pews sit in perfect rows facing west, where a simple altar sits upon a marble dais. Opposite the altar, a statue of a stern woman clad in full plate armor, brandishing a longsword and shield, stands vigil against the eastern wall of the room.

There is an almost tangible sense of calm pervading the chapel.

Mere moments after the group enters, a spectral figure manifests before them.

I heard the commotion outside. And, it would appear, that you've come with guests. Greetings! I am Chaplain Fabian Blix, and I welcome you to this place of worship. Here you will find rest, respite, and what assistance I can provide. The voice of the apparition echoes within the minds of all present.

The ghostly chaplain will examine the injured and render what aid he can provide:

Liesel-Marie: restoration to dispel her negative level. She loses the -1 penalty on her ability checks, attack rolls, combat maneuver checks, Combat Maneuver Defense, saving throws, and skill checks. In addition, her current and total hit points increase by 5.
Cure Serious Wounds: 3d8 + 8 ⇒ (6, 5, 5) + 8 = 24
This brings the still injured Erutaki to 51 hit points, and puts her at the Wounded threshold.
Meir: restoration to dispel his negative level. He loses the -1 penalty on his ability checks, attack rolls, combat maneuver checks, Combat Maneuver Defense, saving throws, and skill checks. In addition, his current and total hit points increase by 5.
Cure Serious Wounds: 3d8 + 8 ⇒ (8, 6, 1) + 8 = 23
This places Meir at the Healthy threshold with full hit points.

Once Chaplain Blix is done tending to Meir, the young man breaks out a scroll, then goes and stands over Nyym.

Nyym: restoration to dispel his negative level. He loses the -1 penalty on his ability checks, attack rolls, combat maneuver checks, Combat Maneuver Defense, saving throws, and skill checks. In addition, his current and total hit points increase by 5.

Aiko does another lay on hands for Liesel-Marie.
Lay on Hands: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 1, 4) = 8; she also receives the following mercies: diseased (acts as remove disease [CL 9th]), fatigued (The target is no longer fatigued), and injured (gains fast healing 3 for 4 rounds).

Liesel-Marie receives 20 points of healing from Aiko's lay on hands: 8 directly from the lay on hands itself, and 12 from the fast healing. This brings the Erutaki to 71 hit points.

Thanks to the quick recovery judgement, Colt recovers enough hit points to place him at the Healthy threshold with full hit points.

Oloch tends to Kyt, Nyym, and Charlotte, spending two fervor to channel.
Channel Positive Energy: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 4) = 12

Charlotte receives 12 points of healing. She is at the Healthy threshold.
Kyt receives 12 points of healing. She is at the Healthy threshold.
Nyym receives 12 points of healing. He is at the Grazed threshold with 61 hit points.

After a quick discussion had by Aiko, Blix, Meir, and Oloch, the four come to an agreement then approach the rest of the group. The chaplain speaks, saying:

After some deliberation, we have decided that it is in all of your best interests to recuperate here under my protection. However, you are free to do as you wish. The final decision is yours.

If you do decide to rest for the night, Chaplain Blix will stand guard over the group without the need to post watches. It will also give the players that need to do so the opportunity to make what final adjustments that have yet to be done to their characters. Or you can press on with what healing you've already received. As DM, I'm good with what you decide either way. What say you?

Nyym felt much better now that the crazy effects from the 1st hit he took from the Vampire Orc had been negated by the spirit of this chapel. He also felt oddly at peace. But a night's rest sounded great as he really pushed his abilities in that last fight.

A night's recharge sounds great right now. Plus while it is probably know to our enemies that we are here do to the recent fighting. Bust to let things simmer down a bit so we regain our advantage. Besides. Several of us took a beating in that last fight..

Nyym uncontiously rubbed at his scar and his other freshly healed wounds. He still felt a twinge as he did so..

Looking to the Spirit of Blix and Oloch.

You have my thanx for the healing. It is greatly appreciated.

He inclined his head to both in respect as he spoke..

Not to be greedy, but would she gain gp from Oloch’s channel, also?

Liesel-Marie bows deeply, attempting to emulate Aiko as each healer assists her. She moves to a wall where she unburdens herself of enough gear and weaponry to outfit a small squad. ”If we can pause here, I feel a need to speak to my ancestors after coming so close to joining them today. I had a vision when that beast struck me - I wish to think on it before we proceed.”

Nyym moves over to a bench and props himself in a comfortable position. As he walked past Mier..

Thank you for the restoration.. glad we were able to find and reunite you sister with you. Kyt was the one who found her and watched over her Incase you were wondering.

Nyym gave the young man a wary smile and then closed his eyes to rest. But something had changed in him.. An awakening of sorts. He could since it. But had no idea what it was. As Nyym contemplated this. He remained awake and aware till the others settled in before he drifted off to sleep.

Kyt

Kyt looks around at the rest of the group. They are pretty banged up, she thinks to herself. And not just physically. With all of the fights that we've had, I don't think I've ever heard Liesel-Marie mention almost meeting her ancestors before.

The elf warrior monk casts her gaze upon the spectral priest, saying, Alright. We'll take this time to regather our strength. It'll also give me the opportunity to learn more about what's going on so that we can figure out what our next move will be.

Chaplain Blix affects a bow before fading from everyone's sight.

Kyt moves over to where the Erutaki is sitting. I want to talk with you, if that's alright. I'm worried about everyone, but especially you. You're usually so unflappable and I've come to rely on that. I'm always wearing my heart on my sleeve, so having you being unruffled by things balanced that out in our little family.

But this last fight seems different. You seem different. The elf's features contort as she struggles to find the words to continue. You. Nyym. Myself. We're all that we have of Team Ruby. I miss Aodhán and Mesa and Nogusta. Hells, I even miss Rohan. She laughs at that last admission. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm here if you want to talk about things. About what happened with you this time. And if you don't, that's fine. Just know that I'm always available if you need to.

Rocnork
As the elf reaches out to her companion, on the other side of the chapel, Rocnork allows himself to unwind a bit. The wyvaran's abilities always take something of a physical toll upon him whenever he uses them. For him, this is nothing new. But since coming to Redlake Fort, Rocnork has overexerted himself to channel more power than he ever has before. And as a consequence, the toll upon his body has been immense. With time and rest, the damage to himself will mend. But in pushing past the limit of what is safe for his body, how will this affect him going forward?

The wyvaran issues a grunt as he ponders that very thing.

Aiko
Near the entrance of Iomedae's chapel, the samurai removes her daisho before sitting in seiza upon the floor, her back to the double doors. She lays the weapons before her and closes her eyes in kūsō, the Minkan word for reverie. Aiko will remain this way for sanjūippun, or thirty minutes, as she engages in this very elven form of meditation, conducting a series of mental exercises to refresh her body and mind. But as she is not an elf, Aiko knows that she will eventually need to acquire sleep while they are here.

While in this state, Aiko is very much aware of what is happening outside of her. And that is the point. Old habits die hard, even in this place of refuge.

Meir and Charlotte
The two siblings commiserate together as first Charlotte, then Meir, tell each other what happened in the time they were apart. When they are done, both prepare themselves to rest.

The young man sees to his sister's needs before tucking her in and laying on the floor next to Charlotte. A moment later, the little girl shifts so that she is able to snuggle against her brother.

With a full night’s rest (8 hours of sleep or more), each of you recover 9 hit points. We'll move on when everyone is done roleplaying.

Nyym catches the ring tossed his way by Tsodoc. While holding it in his closed hand where he caught it, he again inclines his head to Tsodoc..

Thank you my friend.

His voice was that of tiredness. But he managed a smile none the less. Like Liesel-Marie, Nyym and Tsodoc were one his from the undertaker and he felt it. Nyym was sure their next fight will be just as, if not more brutal. As Tsodoc moved off to his own area, Nyym drifted back to his own lonely thoughts. This last fight as well as what they had learned in the Vault of Thorns. His time was limited as was the others. But they had much left to do in the time they had left.

And the clock ticks on as the grains of sand slowly flows to an uncertain end.

Oddly enough his thoughts driftto the image of a certain dark elf female. But that too faded as he lost himself other thoughts as those around him conversed with one another.

Alright then, replies the warrior-monk. Just remember what I said. If you ever need to talk, I'm here to listen.

Can't say that we have, Kyt responds while making herself comfortable enough to enter reverie. With all of the orcs, ogres, and giants about, I'm pretty sure one of us would've seen another human running around in this place.

Elsewhere in Redlake Fort...
The subject of Marshall Winchester's query is packing up his belongings so as to hightail it out of the outpost.

Hey darlin', calls out the wanted murderer, you all set to vamoose from this place?

I was hoping to see the ritual that vile Gorb fellow is going to perform. It may prove amusing, especially if the fat ogre screws it up somehow.

The voice of Rau's beloved Varmy sent shivers up and down his spine. How could he say no to her? Even if doing so meant being able to put as much distance as possible between themselves and that Martel boy looking for him.

Well... I guess we can stay just a mite longer. But only until this Gorb fella is done with that rite of his.

The masked man feels the powerful arms of his lady wrap around him from behind before hearing a sensual whisper in his ear: Don't worry. I'll more than make it up to you later.

Rau places a hand on top of Varmy's even as he smiles beneath the skull-like contraption on his head.

And... as a bonus...

DM Blayde MacRonan wrote:

In the border city of Hallein Town, Mesa shivers after setting foot on Virlych Dock, drawing what was most likely a worried look from the golden-headed cockerel that is present by her side.

Aodhàn looks over to the Minkan performer. Nice to see that I'm not the only one feeling the same way since we crossed the river.

You mean like someone is walking on your grave? Yeah, that's because somewhere in this misbegotten wasteland lies Gallowspire, the place where The Whispering Tyrant is imprisoned, says the tiny minstrel.

Remind me once again why we came here? pipes up Nogusta.

Vegazi responds, saying, It's the quickest way into Ustalav. The town is home to those who cross the river from the Lastwall portion to the Virlych side to mine the hills here for salt. From here, we head east to Kavapesta in the county of Amaans.

Nogusta nods as he runs a hand over his shaved head. Right. Well my understanding is that this region is filled primarily with predatory monsters and roaming undead. He then is quick to add after receiving annoyed glares from both Boo and Mesa, No worries, though. I'm sure we can handle what comes our way just fine.

Sure we will. Rocky isn't here. And with that, Mesa continues past the others, followed by Boo.

You're just never going to let that go, are you? asks the bouncer, trying to suppress a smirk.

Why should I? After all, he--

'He set me on fire', says her companions in unison.

Mesa pauses only to look back at the others, pull down one of her eyelids and stick out her tongue, before turning away again.

The sight of that expression makes Aodhàn think of his Kytynnatae, his beloved Kytynna, as he has seen her do the same behind the backs of the priests of Sanctuary. It brings a small smile to his face.

Meanwhile, in Thrushmoor...

Aodhán wasn't smiling now as he delivers a jab with his left hand straight to his opponent's face, quickly followed by a right cross, a left hook, and another right cross to the body that sends the shocked Mesa scrambling back towards the standing mirror in the room.

I don't know who or what you are, but you sure as hell aren't Mesa, says Aodhán as the Chelish ex-bouncer brings his hands back so that the left is in front of his face and the right by his chin. Aodhán's stance, which includes his feet shoulder-width apart from each other, knees being slightly bent, with his chest slightly turned toward the enemy, is unbroken as his purple eyes flash in anger.

How did you know? As she speaks, Mesa's appearance wavers to reveal a smooth-featured humanoid creature whose skin is made entirely of mirrored glass before resuming the Minkan's aspect once again.

You look as though you stepped out of a mirror, comes Aodhán's response before dashing forward to deliver another series of strikes.

Despite the quickness of his step, however, the false Mesa (whose actual name is Tilsitari) proves quicker still as she takes advantage of the separation between them to call upon her innate magic that results in the imposter becoming four.

She needed to give the purple-eyed human something else to hit at other than her actual self, so Tilsitari produced three replicas of herself to deal with. The moment he hit one of them, she would leap back through the mirror to make good her escape.

This isn't the first time that Aodhán has seen something like this. Indeed, during his time as head bouncer at Trunau's rough and tumble bar called The Killin' Ground, this tactic proved to be a uncommon one used by low-tier arcanists wishing to skate on their bills.

The creature's inverted appearance of Mesa, coupled with this tactic, gives him an idea.

So rather than falling prey to the illusion put forth by his foe, Aodhán decides to go after something else.

The standing mirror.

All four of the Tilsitari's expressions are those of anger as the short human shatters her fastest means of escape from the reading room.

The sound of breaking glass causes the room's western door to open, revealing Vegazi the Devil-Sword framed within, longsword and short sword in hand.

I'd advise you to surrender, says Aodhán with a knowing smirk. The appearance you've assumed won't spare you from the wrath of her blades.

The half-orc had been just about to ask what Mesa had done to warrant such violence, but the ex-bouncer's words tells Vegazi everything she needs to know.

Tilsitari knew when these adventurers intially came to Fort Hailcourse that the last thing she wanted was a violent encounter with them, and so did her best to send them on their way. However those efforts proved to not be as successful as Tilsitari thought they'd been, for they had somehow infiltrated the fortification without her knowledge.

We're just looking for information. We don't care about your mission here, so if you can tell us what we want to know, then we'll be on our way. While Aodhán hopes that the Mesa impostor will talk, his stance leaves little doubt that he's prepared to fight if necessary.

What do you want to know, Tilsitari asks with an exasperated sigh.

Where is Count Lowls?

You try Iris Hill? That's where all your aristocrats reside.

Keldrin Mon, a stevedore Thrushmoor's fishing docks, said something similar to Aodhán while they were at a taphouse called The Stain. The man claimed to be the ex-bouncer's drinking buddy and that they would even get together once a week for a game of cards.

Aodhán prepares to ask the impostor one last question when Vegazi spins about in the doorway, the flat of her shortsword knocking aside a dart that had been launched her way.

I've got this one here, calls out the half-orc as she rushes to meet the newest attacker. She's got the greenest eyes I've ever seen.

Tilsitari swears under her breath. Whoever these people are, they had attracted trouble in the form of Risi Nairgon, an assassin. Which meant that the count's assistant had dispatched her to deal with them, just like the shapeshifter had been to keep the garrison under control.

I can't allow myself to be caught under these circumstances. Not by her. And with that thought in mind, Tilsitari unsheathes her own weapons, a pair of shortswords, and initiates an attack upon a now distracted Aodhán...

Liesel-Marie and Nyym:

Kyt, Liesel-Marie, and Nyym find themselves in a desert, on the edge of a modest sized crater. Water of a stunning ultramarine blue has pooled within it like a giant cistern. As though in defiance of both the sun and its surroundings, there was an unnatural chill present. Glancing down at the water's surface, rather than seeing its surroundings reflected the trio see instead a haunting skyline of metal, wood, and stone structures in all directions. And that image is disturbed as a hideous tangle of hairlike fungal filaments break through the surface, writhing with nauseating purpose. Bones lie tangled in the wriggling mass, arrayed around a central draconic skull. Caught amongst the clutches of those undulating tendrils are the broken bodies of Aodhán, Mesa, and Rohan as they're slowly being lowered toward the now open maw...

The night passes uneventfully. When the group arises from their rest, they can hear Chaplain Blix reciting a prayer. When he is done, the spectral priest stands from where he had been kneeling and turns to face those within the chapel.

Good morning to you all. I trust that your rest was well?

A pale-faced Kyt glances first at Liesel-Marie, then at Nyym, before responding: Yes. It was.

Outstanding. Now, if any of you have injuries that still need to be attended to, present yourselves to me so that I may do what I can. The priest turns his attention towards Tsadok before continuing. Given your more... unusual... physiology, I had to prepare something different. But I can now treat you as well.

At this, Meir speaks, As you may or may not know, sometimes souls manifest as spirits when they cannot rest due to some great injustice, either real or perceived. Chaplain Blix is in such a predicament. Marshal Winchester... He nods towards the lawman from Alkenstar before continuing: ...and I have taken it upon ourselves to aid him in attaining the rest he so desires.

Nyyms eyes snap open sits upright with a jolt. So rattled by the site of the vision that he had inadvertently extended a lightning blade before he he he realized there was no threat. Just as quickly he pulled the blade back to the ether and relaxed taking in a deep breath. A quick glance at LM and Kyt before settling back down.. Calming his mind before

I think I will take ya up on that finish touch healing.

Nyym hoped that his feelings were not in his voice. But he could not shake the dread from the vision..

I have a very bad feeling about things ahead. I just hope that they are ok.

But, of course, replies the chaplain as he makes his way over and places an ethereal hand upon Nyym before continuing: Be temperate, Fight for justice and honor, Hold valor in your heart.

Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

And with the 9 hit points gained after resting, Nyym is Healthy with a full 75 hp. At this point, everyone should be back up to full strength and ready to rock and roll.

Nothing difficult in and of itself, responds Meir. We just have gather up the remains of this fort's previous castellan, one Tamand Varias, and destroy them on the chapel's altar. The danger is in the search, or more to the point, what we could encounter during said search.

Once Chaplain Blix is done doling out treatment, Kyt gives everyone in her group a moment to ready themselves before speaking: From what I can tell, we have three objectives before us. They are, one, the elimination of the hill giant chieftain Grenseldek; two, the elimination of the orc general Kelseph; and three, finding and destroying the remains of the fort's castellan so that Chaplain Blix may find his eternal rest.

The fortified keep remains the most likely place we'll find this chieftain, speaks up Aiko. And it is for certain where that orc general ran off to.

It is also where Castellan Varias resided as well, adds the spectral priest.

Kyt nods grimly at all of this, then says, Then we'll make our way to this keep. I don't know what all we will encounter once we get there, but as long as we hold fast to one another, we should prevail.

The elf warrior-monk then gathers up her gear and proceeds to exit the chapel, but not before giving a courteous bow to Blix for all that he has done on their behalf.

Near the center of the inner ward, a flight of stone stairs climbs up to the entrance to the fort’s keep, located on the building’s second floor. A lowered drawbridge connects the entrance to the freestanding stone staircase.

After crossing over and entering the structure, a large, open chamber that has been thoroughly gutted lies before you. Where smaller rooms once divided this hall, only the remnants of former walls remain, leaving exposed joists jutting from the stone walls like branches. There are three sets of double-doors: a pair to the south, a southwesterly pair directly across from the entrance, and a pair of doors directly to the west.

Aiko examines the chamber, taking note of the three possible ways to progress forward.

We need to determine which path should be taken, the samurai says.

I can assist with that, speaks up Meir. As he does, the tinkling sound of children laughing can be heard as the phantom Groveck shimmers into view beside the young man. With a hat tip to everyone in the room, the incorporeal being makes its way first to the southern set of double-doors and passes through them. After fifteen seconds elapse, Groveck returns, only to head over to the southwestern double-doors where it does the same thing. Fifteen seconds later, it passes back into view before repeating the process again on the final pair of double-doors.

And with each time that the phantom moves beyond their sight, the dark-haired young man describes what it sees.

When it returns from its scouting trip, Groveck drifts over to where Meir and the others are gathered together, only to vanish once again.

Behind the southern doors, there lies a staircase and another pair of double-doors.

Behind the southwestern doors, a huge iron cage that fills most of a circular chamber, with several crates, chests, statues, paintings, and other art objects crammed between the cage and the walls of the room. Inside the cage, a large piece of furniture sits under a cloth drapery of some sort.

And finally, behind the western doors is another pair of doors and a single door leading north.

Nyym watches as the phantom drifts through each door and listens to the descriptions of each.

Now that's an interesting way to scout ahead. Definitely better then me in that area. Is there any way for him to move past the second set of doors?

As he ays this, Nyym starts checking for traps around each set of doors and listening for any sounds that may be carrying though the extra sets of doors.
