DM Blayde MacRonan's Of Aeons and Giants: The Continuing Adventures of Team Ruby (Private Campaign, Closed Recruitment)

Game Master Blayde MacRonan

The orcs attacking Trunau have been defeated, but the danger remains - the hill giant chieftain Grenseldek still wants the treasures of the tomb beneath Trunau. In order to protect their chosen community, the members of Team Ruby must leave it and travel to deal with this most imminent threat. Yet even putting down Grenseldek and her squabbling monstrous minions may not be enough to save Trunau. For there are stranger forces at play, and a storm is brewing on the horizon...

Round 5
Oloch

Constitution check to stabilize: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15; -18 penalty, DC 10 to succeed)

Oloch sustains 1 point of damage, putting him at -19 hit points. As this equals his current Constitution score, the orc expires from his wounds.

Next up is...

Poppy and Turgle
The two half-ogres emerge through the door leading into the upper guardroom, which offers a splendid vantage of the surrounding countryside. However, the brothers, out of breath from both the stair-climbing and the near constant bickering with each other, have little time to take in the view. Instead, they make continue over (each trying to pull the other out of the way) to the northeast door that leads out on to a walkway connecting this room to another just like it. Once there, they are able to make out the back of the wyvaran, who is hovering less than twenty feet away from them as he faces off against the hill giant Vurg.

After a quick game of ro-sham-bo*, the victorious Turgle takes the bow that they've been sharing, nocks an arrow, and prepares to fire.

* Ro-sham-bo is another name for rock, scissors, paper.

Turgle composite longbow attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
arrow damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12

The three-armed half-ogre swears under his breath as he misses his target. Taking advantage of his brother's moment of anger, Poppy snatches his bow back and strings an arrow that he's already drawn from his quiver.

Poppy composite longbow attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
arrow damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

Despite being closer to the target, the tiny-eyed archer also proves unable to score a hit on Rocnork.

Looks like Rocnork's luck is holding out against these two imbeciles. Next up is... Aiko.

Aiko's reddish-orange eyes narrow, her disgust evident at the general's betrayal of her subordinate. The warrior fought honorably and did not deserve such a fate.

Her first impulse is to take on the bandaged orc archer directly. Such an act would be well within the bounds of both her creed as a servant of the Empress and the Ichimeio. However, the samurai recalls a scroll that she has been safeguarding for emergency purposes. Originally intended to used in case a member of the the group succumbed to injuries beyond her limited capacity to heal, Aiko thinks it fitting that it be used instead to revive the fallen orc warrior.

Move Action: retrieve scroll from pack
Standard Action: read scroll (breath of life)

She reaches into her backpack and, after a moment of rifling through it, produces the desired item.

Spellcraft check: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (18) + 12 = 30; DC 25 or to read scroll

No Action: 5-foot step to drop from the boulder she's standing on

Aiko eyes the scroll, repeating what is written there. As she does so, the words begin to vanish with each line. As she nears the end, the samurai drops from her perch and places a now glowing hand upon the body of the orc.

Come back to the light of this world, warrior. You've no time to rest in the next life. Not while your betrayer still lives in this one.

Breath of Life: 5d8 + 9 ⇒ (3, 7, 6, 8, 5) + 9 = 38

The glow from Aiko's hand streaks towards Oloch's heart and, once there, pulses before disappearing.

For a moment, nothing seems to happen. Then the chest of the orc expands as he sits up with a loud gulp of air. Eyes wide, Oloch looks about frantically, not sure what just transpired.

Oloch receives 38 points of healing from breath of life, which puts the warpriest at the Critical threshold. He takes a -3 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks, as well as AC and caster level.

Next up is...

Vurg
The sight of Poppy and Turgle on the parapet beyond the wyvaran causes Vurg to grin evilly. Taking aim, the hill giant pitches another boulder.

Vurg's boulder throw: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
boulder damage: 1d8 + 16 ⇒ (2) + 16 = 18

The big rock streaks through the air, past Rocnork, to shatter into dust as it slams into the side of the walkway. The two half-ogres jump back in alarm, knowing that

Vurg grumbles to himself as he reaches for yet another boulder. He had been inclined to let Poppy and Turgle live a bit longer while he dealt with the intruder. However, the sight of the two ogrekin causes that idea to slip away from his tiny little mind.

The hill giant now sees an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone.

This brings an end to Round 5. My next post will kick off Round 6 and I will have by then adjusted the battlemap to take into account the movement that has taken place so far.

Round 6
Kelseph
As she gazes over the battlefield, Kelseph knows that, despite her skill, she cannot face all of the enemies currently arrayed against her. The second female human had somehow revived the fallen Oloch. The pale sword-wielding orc is looking to renew his fight against her.

And then there is the axe-wielding human female, she whose rage Kelseph can smell burning like a raging fire. Her need to kill this one human is strong, but the bandaged archer will not allow that need to be the death of her. Not when she still has so much left to accomplish.

Given her her current situation, it is not looking all too well for the orc. But then her sharp ears catch a sound that she did not expect to hear coming from the ditch below: rushing water.

Full-Round Action: Withdraw (the square she starts out in is not considered threatened by any opponent Kelseph can see, and therefore visible enemies do not get attacks of opportunity against her when she moves from that square)
Will save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16; -1 due to Grazed threshold

The general grimaces, the wounds beneath her bandages beginning to tear wider as she sprints for the edge of the outcropping and dives over the edge to disappear into the water below.

Until Kesleph can attack Liesel-Marie again, she has sustained the sickened condition (–2 penalty on all attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks).

The fight with General Kelseph has come to an end. Good job, everyone. Cuing up the FFVII fanfare so that you can do your victory dance. The half-drow makes his way over to the southern wall of the fort where he eventually finds a set of stairs cut into the rocky plateau. A quick scan of the area reveals no sign of orc guards.

If he makes his way up those stairs, Nyym will come across Tsadok, Aiko (who is tending to an orc dressed in plate armor seated upon the ground) and Liesel-Marie. They all appear to be in the aftermath of battle.

I am quite capable of tending to my own injuries, human! Oloch's eyes narrow as he tries to pull away from the samurai.

Aiko, however, will not be denied, as she says firmly, I never said that you weren't! Now hold still as the Empress' grace further purifies you.

Lay on Hands: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 4, 5) = 15; Oloch receives the following mercies: diseased (acts as remove disease [CL 9th]), fatigued (The target is no longer fatigued), and injured (gains fast healing 3 for 4 rounds)

A seldom seen smirk is on Aiko's face while she watches the orc's eyes grow wide as his injuries begin to knit themselves together. When the course of her healing is done, Oloch's head (somewhat reluctantly) dips toward her in thanks, accompanied by a grunt.

Oloch receives 28 points of healing from Aiko's lay on hands: 15 directly from the lay on hands itself, and 12 from the fast healing. This brings the still injured orc to the Wounded threshold. He takes a –2 penalty on all attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks, as well as to AC and caster level.

Liesel-Marie's Perception check: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18; DC 27 or better to succeed

Despite her best efforts (especially when trying to focus past the bickering taking place between Oloch and Aiko), Liesel-Marie is unable to see any sign of Kelseph in the water.

Meanwhile...

Kyt catches up to the gar, who appears to stymied by a wooden barrier in front of it. The elf's lips curl into a mischievous grin as she locks onto the target before her. Kyt curls her fingers, placing both hands together at chest level so that they're facing the same direction (with the palm of one hand on the back of the other) as the warrior-monk begins gathering ki in a display of energy that emits sporadic bolts which arc out like electricity in every direction. She then thrusts both hands forward to unleash a series of blue energy waves with swirls of white ki streaming around them.

Performs a surge fist flurry of blows and spends 1 point of ki for an extra attack in the flurry.

Surge Fist damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 6) + 3 = 13
Surge Fist damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (3, 1) + 3 = 7
Surge Fist damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (6, 2) + 3 = 11
Surge Fist damage: 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (3, 1) + 3 = 7

The barrier has a hardness of 5 and 20 hit points. This means that each surge fist in the flurry did the following damage: 8, 2, 6, and 2, for a total of 18 damage.

The blasts of water and ki crash into the wooden structure, shaking both the barrier and the water around it. However, as the residual energy dissipates, the barrier still stands.

The enormous fish, having turned away from the structure, looks back and swims toward it with ever increasing speed to slam itself into the barrier.

Gar Slam damage: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14

The barrier has a hardness of 5, with 2 hit points remaining. This means that the fish's "slam" did 9 points of damage.

The gar crashes through the structure, and in the process, catches several creatures on the other side by surprise as both it and the water continue through unimpeded.

The creatures consist of the following: three grizzly bears, a dire bear, and a little human girl wielding a skillet.

The four ursine animals quickly collect their senses and turn their attentions toward the aquatic predator now in their midst.

The tiny human female's face go through a series of different emotions, ranging from shock to elation to fear before she is pushed through the hole in the barrier by the water.

Kyt Perception check: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (8) + 15 = 23; DC 17 or better to notice the human

To catch another character that "falls" while within her reach, Kyt must succeed at a melee touch attack. If she hits, Kyt may then attempt an Athletics check. If she succeeds, she catches the "falling" girl, but if her total weight (with equipment) exceeds the elf's heavy load limit, Kyt "falls" as well. If Kyt fails by 4 or less, she doesn’t stop the human’s "fall". If she fails by 5 or more, Kyt not only fails to stop the "fall", but begins "falling" as well.

Kyt Attack roll: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26; must hit a touch AC of 12
Kyt Athletics check: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (16) + 14 = 30; DC 20 or better to succeed

The reflexes of the elf warrior-monk allow her to grab the slender girl by the collar of the black silk dress she wears. Kyt then brings her in close to her own body and locks her arms tight to keep the human from being washed away in the flow of the current.

Deciding that they both need to reach the surface, the elf kicks with her legs to propel herself upward.

Kyt Athletics check to swim: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (13) + 14 = 27; DC 15 or better to succeed

The two make it to the surface and inhale some much needed air. As they do, they can hear the sound of a ringing bell.

The tolling of the bell can be heard by Aiko, Liesel-Marie, Nyym, Oloch, and Tsadok as well as Rocnork.

As the cautious half-drow makes his way toward the unblocked door, he feels one of the cobblestones sink slightly into the floor that is then followed by an audible click.

A moment later, two things transpire: the first being a portcullis dropping from where it was once hidden in the ceiling, with the second being a long curved blade sliding out of the wall to his immediate left, its function to do him harm all to clear.

I'm going to need a DC 20 Reflex check from Nyym to avoid being hit by the descending portcullis. Success means that he won't take any damage due to his evasion class feature.

Moving causiously forward. Nyym freezes when he hears the click. Diving forward. It's only in that instance that Nyym realized his error as the wall scythe filles his view. Rolling so as not to take it in the body. Pain lances through his left arm as he lands. Senses in hyper awareness as he remains still so as to not activate any other unseen traps. Thankfully he has friends close this time and not enemies.. Liesel-Marie will probably have a few choice words for him as well.

Nyym sustains 12 points of damage from the wall scythe trap, and is at the Healthy threshold. He currently takes no penalty on his attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks, as well as to AC and caster level.

After the blade quickly slips back into the wall, Nyym picks himself up from the floor. Looking around, he notices that the portcullis dropped five feet in front of door, and thus is blocking any possible egress through it.

If he so wishes, now that he knows it is there, Nyym can make a DC 25 Perception check to locate where exactly the scythe blade is located in the wall. If he is successful in finding it, then a DC 30 Finesse check is required open the locking mechanism before he can actually get to work on disabling the trap (which requires a DC 20 Finesse check to accomplish).

As for the portcullis traps, they are currently locked into the floor with no way for him deal with mechanically. However, it is very possible for them to be lifted from where they are currently locked. This will require a DC 25 lift check for each one.

Taking the time to root around the tent (during which his invisibility finally runs its course and expires), Nyym sees discarded heavily stained bandages scattered about the floor, along with used bedding, a rock, and a pair of chests.

Each chest is locked and requires a DC 20 Finesse check to open.

Contents if successful:

Chest 1: potion of cure serious wounds (CL 5th, 3d8+5), potion of protection from arrows (CL 3rd, DR 10/magic and prevents up to 30 points of damage from ranged attacks), a fire-blackened mithral agile breastplate*, a furious greatsword, mwk javelins (2), a spell component pouch, a platinum holy symbol of Gorum (worth 100 gp), and 148 gp

Chest 2: a light dragonhide fire wyrmsbreath shield, a ghost touch warhammer, two light hammers, a potion of barkskin (CL 3rd, +1 natural armor bonus), two flasks of alchemist’s fire, and a set of thieves’ tools

* This armor is treated, in all ways, like light armor, including when determining proficiency. It has an arcane spell failure chance of 15%, a maximum Dexterity bonus of +5, and an armor check penalty of -1.

Tsadok watches as Kelseph dives over the edge, he is torn between two feelings angry that Kelseph ran way or relief that she did. But either way they will probably face her again this day.

The ringing brings him back to the here and now. He quickly reaches behind him once more and pulls a vial with a redish-brown liquid in it and drinks it down.

Cause Mod Wounds: 2d8 ⇒ (4, 4) = 8

Tsadok receives 8 points of healing, bringing his total to 45

As he finishes the potion the slamming of metal and stone sound comes from the tent, and he readies Sable Moon to meet what caused the noise.

It appears we will not have to wait long to see what the bell brings.

Tsadok stares at the tent, focusing with all his senses. In his weakened state his sense of smell is heightened.

Perception: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (19) + 16 = 35

He has a questionable look on his face, Now there's a smell of red nectar that I haven't smelled in a while. But how did he get here. Trickey escapes his lips before he stops himself from continuing.

The orc stares into the eyes of the Erutaki, ignoring her outstretched hand. Cowards flee, warriors retreat. I don't need to explain what that means to one such as you. So know that I will deal with her on my own and in my own way. For that I need no help.

Like Liesel-Marie, Nyym can see that he is trembling with barely contained rage, as though for him the matter is a personal one. More so than even for the members of Team Ruby who were there.

Spoiler:

Nyym is also able to see that in spite of his orc features, this armored warrior bears an uncanny resemblance to Halgra. Which causes him to remember an incident that took place several years ago...

"So it was that Oloch soon found himself standing before the gates of the human settlement of Trunau, calling for its leader, Halgra of the Blackened Blades, to stand forth and meet her son."

"To his surprise, she did, and Oloch found himself both shocked and vaguely discomfited by the warmth with which Halgra greeted her lost son, welcoming him into her house. There she told him the story of his birth—how he was the product of a short-lived dalliance with a powerful orc leader she refused to name, and how he had been stolen from her as an infant during a raid on her campsite. She introduced him to his half-siblings, and offered him a place as a defender of Trunau."

"Yet a wolf can never be a simple dog, no matter how much it might long to wear the chain. To Halgra's horror, Oloch's lust for battle refused to be sated by simple raids and training bouts. Citizens who roused his ire were terribly injured, and in the end Halgra herself had to take up her sword and drive him from the town, announcing that she would always love him as a son—but that he would never again be allowed in Trunau until he learned to control his battle lust and turn his divine abilities toward a positive end."

Halgra is still alive... she, in fact, is the one who sent Team Ruby on this mission:

Halgra of The Blackened Blades wrote:
Halgra then looked to Kytynna and the others. You have given and done more on behalf of Truanu than could ever have been expected of you. For that we are truly grateful. And while we have no right to ask more of you, I fear we must. To that end, I would ask you to go to Grenseldek’s lair—an abandoned outpost near the River Esk called Redlake Fort—and deal with the giant chieftain and her orc tribe before they can attack Trunau again. Your recent heroism during the orc raid and in Uskroth’s tomb makes you all best suited to this task, as Trunau’s militia and citizenry are needed to rebuild the town’s defenses after the orc attack.

As for your post... well, let's see how that goes, shall we?

None of the tension in Oloch's body leaves him as he listens intently to every word spoken by Liesel-Marie. When she is done, he says nothing. Instead, the orc moves past the Erutaki and into the tent. When he emerges a moment later, Oloch is carrying a sword different than the one he went in with.

This weapon belonged to the previous general. Like me, he too served The Lord in Iron. The orc pauses for a moment then says, 'The clash of sword on shield is my song, I am in your armor, your blade. Strike at your foes and I guide your hand, For I thirst only for battle.'

As he speaks, a trickle of blood runs down the length of the blade, which now is encased in a sheath of fiery crimson.

Oloch's lips form into a toothy smile. It would seem that I am worthy still.

He then looks to Liesel-Marie. Your words struck me as though I had been hit in the face with steel. That has only happened one other time. The day my mother told me I would never again be allowed in Trunau until I had learned to control my battle lust and turned my abilities toward a more positive end. For a time, I wandered the wilds of Belkzen, yet no ordinary beasts could provide a proper challenge—nor remove the lingering suspicion that there might, as she had claimed, be more to life than simple bloodshed. And now, thanks to Kelseph, I will take my first steps toward that end. And I will do so by taking from her the leadership of this tribe. This, I can do. But Grenseldek's hold over them is strong, made so by the giants that follow and enforce her will.

I am Oloch, battle-priest to the Lord in Iron and son to Halgra of the Blackened Blades. I will lend my strength to those bearing the name of my sister. For in doing so, I will find Kelseph and put an end to her miserable existence.

The orc ends his soliloquy by sheathing the bloodstained sword upon his back.

Liesel-Marie listens solemnly, face grim, recognizing the import of the warrior's speech from his demeanor. When he has finished, she nods once. "Well met, Oloch, son of Halgra of the Blackened Blades and priest of the Lord in Iron. I am Liesel-Marie Frostvale, defender of Trunau, friend to Halgra and Ruby, of the icy lands of the north, bearer of IcingFlame. Well met." As she names the greataxe, she raises it slightly.

"We were sent here by Halgra as Chief Defender of the city of Trunau in response to the attack on the city. It was led by the bandaged archer Kelseph and orchestrated by the tribe found within these walls. I present my blood-brothers and blade-sisters."

She gestures to the rest of the party, a clear invitation for them to introduce themselves. If Oloch doesn't cut them off, of course.

At this, the samurai rises from where she'd been kneeling. As she does so, both hands are placed one on top of the other just below her abdomen. Aiko then dips her torso slightly toward Oloch.

Watashi wa Aiko degozaru. After a moment, she stands upright and says, this time in the common trade tongue, I am Aiko.

Nyym watching the exchange from beside the opening watched him enter and return with the new blade. As Aiko made her introduction, Nyym could not help but since at the implications.

Kelseph, you really messed with the wrong family. Plus you just keep bringing us allies through ur wretched ways. I will not dishonor this guy's pledge when he gets his hands on you. I will not interfere. Liesel-Marie has tought me that much.

As Aiko finished, Nyym simply inclined his head in greeting as he spoke.

I am simply known as Nyym.

Tsadok watches the actions of Oloch and the rest of the ones present. He still will not be at ease till all is done here. But he does relax, alittle, as he spines Saber Moon in his hand to clear the blood from his blade before it comes to rest in a reverse grip with the back of the blade resting against the back of his arm.

Tsadok comes out of the tent as the conversation is going on. He starts looking to the sky to find Rocnork.

Come on big boy, where you at.

High up on the guard platform, Rocnork hovers over the rapidly cooling body of the hill giant. As far as the two who had been sniping at him before, he's convinced that they took off after being caught in the noxious fumes emitted from the corpse of the dead pig thrown by the giant. Otherwise, he'd have dealt with them once and for all. However, taking out the artillery piece had been a bigger priority at the time, as it means he now possesses greater ability to roam about in the sky above the keep.

From his vantage point, the wyvaran casts his senses about for a sign of the others.

Rocnork's Perception check: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (12) + 13 = 25; DC 24 or better to succeed

Due to his sharp vision, Rocnork is able to make out something moving in the water-filled moat below...

After managing to convince the young girl to calm down, Kyt shifts the human onto her back and reassesses her current situation. She needs to get the two of them some place that offers a greater degree of safety than their current location, especially since the two are close to the southeast tower that could very well be manned by orcs.

Hold on, little one says Kyt. We're about to get moving pretty quick now.

The elf places both hands beneath the surface of the water and releases a blast that propels the two forward. It doesn't take Kyt long to figure out the intricacies of navigating herself and the human child through water, making adjustments as necessary to prevent them from colliding into the walls of the moat.

Kyt's Perception check: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (5) + 15 = 20; DC 22 or better to succeed
Human girl's Perception check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21; DC 17 or better to succeed

As she nears the southern tower, Kyt hears the little girl call out fearfully, Demon! A demon in the sky!

Kyt is about to curse her misfortune when she hears a familiar voice: Need a hand?

The elf chuckles in relief at Rocnork's words. Not a hand, but a pair of eyes in the sky would be nice.

The wyvaran catches on and sets about acting as a guide for the two in the water, leading them past the tower to a set of stairs carved into the rocky plateau.

The dhampir is able to catch the all-too-familiar wingflaps of his companion close by, as well as the ragged breathing of two others.
