Pathfinder: Rise of the Runelords

Game Master bluedove

Welcome to Varisia, and to Sandpoint - a small coastal town located to the west of the region. For the last forty-two years, there hasn't been much trouble in this small coastal town, but that is all about to change.

Well, unless anyone has had reason to be in Ilsurian, or that part of Varisia, in their background, there's little hope for pre-existing connections. Less if that background is Varisian.

As a dedicated Erastilian, Arcallius would absolutely be checking in at the new temple and looking for ways to help the community. So, a check in with the sheriff would also be reasonable. Either of those could provide justification for an introduction, at worst. Or we could go with bumping into the group in town somewhere, but it would make forming a connection less obvious.

Edit: Scanning the other character backgrounds, there seems little obvious chance for a pre-existing connection.

Talia's story is wide-open, but the obvious Varisian blood would mean the Ilsurian Chelaxian prejudice against Varisians would have kept it from becoming a deep connection.

The other stories with details put them all further West and North. Always possible we encountered each other while traveling, but it would have been superficial, or we would already be together, right?

The NPCs could serve as anchors to the storyline. Neither Shalelu Andosana nor Ameiko Kaijitsu are Varisian. Shalelu is an elven ranger who spends most of her time hunting and tracking the goblin tribes in the area. She is a likely suspect for having run into Arcallius in the forest before, probably to warn you of goblin activity nearby.

Sorry for the delay. Health department decided to close our school district at 9:15pm Thursday night. So I spent yesterday trying to get organized for my kids going to school at home. Today will be me making sure that I am doing what is needed and that I am doing it correctly. It is one thing to have everything planned out but it is another to actually do those plans. LOL

Thank you for the clarification on Piranha Strike.
Cade is ready to go and just need to know where you want us to meet up.

This works for me. Look like the tools are claimed but that's fine; Masdok doesn't know how to use them.

He will also keep the Masterwork ranseur until he finds a better weapon.

Masdok is a Shoanti that abandoned his tribe to be a mercenary of sorts. He's been tangled up in organized crime for a while now. I don't think that fits with anyone else's backstory.

Finished leveling up to 3. I can't remember if the dodge bonus from dodge applies to CMD? I have always assumed that deflection bonuses do.

Yes, both Deflection and Dodge apply to CMD. Rule quoted below, emphasis mine.

Archives of Nethys wrote:

Combat Maneuver Defense: Each character and creature has a Combat Maneuver Defense (or CMD) that represents its ability to resist combat maneuvers. A creature's CMD is determined using the following formula:

CMD = 10 + Base attack bonus + Strength modifier + Dexterity modifier + special size modifier

The special size modifier for a creature's Combat Maneuver Defense is as follows: Fine –8, Diminutive –4, Tiny –2, Small –1, Medium +0, Large +1, Huge +2, Gargantuan +4, Colossal +8. Some feats and abilities grant a bonus to your CMD when resisting specific maneuvers. A creature can also add any circumstance, deflection, dodge, insight, luck, morale, profane, and sacred bonuses to AC to its CMD. Any penalties to a creature's AC also apply to its CMD. A flat-footed creature does not add its Dexterity bonus to its CMD.

Determine Success: If your attack roll equals or exceeds the CMD of the target, your maneuver is a success and has the listed effect. Some maneuvers, such as bull rush, have varying levels of success depending on how much your attack roll exceeds the target's CMD. Rolling a natural 20 while attempting a combat maneuver is always a success (except when attempting to escape from bonds), while rolling a natural 1 is always a failure.

That should be a tiny +1 cold iron dagger of returning, though. Did your GM allow you to resize it to small?

Oh, gosh, that reminded me I hadn't added in the items found on the Quasit. I will recalculate and get back. The dagger is very valuable, but I think you won't be able to sell it in Sandpoint so we won't worry about it for now.

@Grulyn, you'll definitely be able to afford your purchases, but cold iron was what the demon was sensitive to, not silver.

Ya, I remembered it after the fact. So I will try to get a cold iron warax as well if still can and its is with in the price.

The silvered Warhammer does not incur the -1 to damage since it is bludgeoning so I will still want that one.

The Gm made it small.

@Cade, Hmm, RAW is that weapons don't resize but we're talking the difference between a 1d3 and a 1d2, so as long as you're using it only occasionally, it will probably be fine. It's worth much more to sell it than to use it, generally. Yours will just have to not be worth the same retail value as the other one because that's a serious wealth imbalance to have on one character.

@Masdok, I will give Simflay and Grulyn a greater share to make up for the 2,400 worth in gold those two items. Sound ok? Or do you guys prefer to pool party wealth?

Also, have a look at the list again, I had forgotten the items found on the mutated goblin as well.

On Goblin Warchanter:

On Goblin Commandos:

silver earrings (25 gp for the pair),

6 pouches of gold dust worth 50 gp each, 300 gp
8 pouches of silver dust worth 5 gp each, 40 gp

In Catacombs:

bottle of wine that looks oddly new 10 gp
Scroll of burning hands (CL 3rd) (190 gp)
Book of monsters, written in Abyssal worth 100 gp
Wand of shocking grasp with 28 charges (420 gp)

On Koruvus:

masterwork handaxe sells for 160

On Eryllium:
tiny +1 cold iron returning dagger, (can't sell yet)

Do we want to sell the longsword just yet? Maybe one of us should use it?

---

Most groups I am in don't count stuff you take from the loot pile against you when it comes to dividing the loot and I prefer that. It evens out in the end, and is usually better for the party for PCs to have the stuff that is useful for them. It is also simpler. The downside of not doing it the way you propose is that I have to weigh my personal wants against the needs of the party. It is probably better for the party for me to have +1 AC, but I was nowhere near even thinking about buying a ring of protection for myself; if I have to "spend" 2k of my share of the loot to keep the ring, I will probably pass on it to get a magic weapon sooner. That means Grulyn takes it (and delays being able to afford the gear he wants) or the party splits the profits (but the frontline is weaker).

The longsword presents a similar problem: someone in the party should have a magic weapon in case we need it in an encounter, but Masdok certainly won't give up 2330gp of his share for what is, to him, a niche backup weapon.

If we don't go the party wealth route I would prefer that any docking of my share is based on the sale value and not the purchase value. The sale value is what I'm depriving the others of, not the purchase value.

Male Dwarf Paladin 3 HP 26 /28 AC 19 ( Touch 9 Flat 19) / Fort +7 | Ref +2 | Will +7 / CMB +6 | CMD 15 / Init -1 / Perception +2

I agree with Masdok, If there is equipment that a party member can use. I say let them just have it, unless more that one wants it and then they can decide what to do with in (example: one give up an item or put coin into the party fund or just dice roll off for the item, but I think most will just say "you can have it").

The split of the loot should be from what items no one wants and coins found.

I believe we are adult enough not to get into a pissing contest over some magic item.

And if one player is an equipment hog, then the others need to step up and say "no more, you have 4 magic swords time to let some one else have one."
Besides Grulyn and Simfly don't have to heal them when Masdok starts to chop off their head. ;o)

I've been watching the conversation and trying to keep my mouth shut as a new arrival, but, yeah, in my opinion, the game is designed with the assumption that the party will work together and use what they find to the best of the team's ability. That almost never means selling something which will improve a single party member's contributions.

In my experience, a group of players trying to work together very rarely have extended arguments about treasure use. More often the group reaches a consensus about the best group benefit pretty quickly. Yeah, sometimes a player goes "But, but, but . . .," but normally even then the worst response is acknowledging it will be nearly as good with the other character.

Hand-me downs can become pretty common, too. Mostly with defensive or utility items, given how specialized so many characters get about their weapons.

Playing with adults actively trying to work together makes for a much less stressful game in many ways. Even when the characters are having trouble getting along.

Just couldn't keep completely quiet. Failed my Will save, I guess.

I've played in groups that have gone down both paths and am completely comfortable with either approach. Happy to go the party loot path if that's everyone else's preference. Either way, Simflay is about to come into more money than she's ever seen in her life before.

Skull & Shackles Map Female Human Pathfinder Society GM Hell's Vengeance Map

Sounds like pooled party wealth is the consensus. That is fine by me, I just tend to default to an equitable distribution as much as possible. This in no way reflects on any expectations of how "mature" everyone will be about dividing loot, by the way. Merely that I follow the axiom that a failure to plan is a plan for failure and uphold the ideal of fair play for all. But I can make an effort to tweak the gear you find to aid that end to some degree.

I have a wonderful spreadsheet that I have permission to copy and use designed by a Brazilian tax lawyer that works beautifully for tracking loot and wealth, if only looking a spreadsheet for a while didn't make my eyes cross and my brain shut down. >_<

Masdok wrote:

To be clear, that is how it would work, I just called out the full retail value to stress how much another player would have to spend to obtain the same gear Masdok has collected for free.

So with a party wealth system, all items that are kept belong to the entire party and the user is merely holding the item for now. So when you record that on your sheet, be sure to designate it as a party item. If you decide to keep a party item for your character permanently, you will need to "buy" it from the party for the sell value. Then those funds get distributed among the group. Once the item is yours, then you are free to sell it as you wish and only you would gain the proceeds. The biggest issue I see with this system is, for example, Masdok would likely keep the +1 ring past the point that others have begun buying such items for themselves. Then it comes time to upgrade to +2's, Masdok pays for the upgrade and now the item reads as his and it's been so long since the item was gained originally, that no one even remembers the ring belongs to the party and not to him, so the party gets cheated out of those funds. Probably no one notices or cares because we're all so mature, but I would still like to prevent even such minor wrongs. =P

Personally, I think it's better to make the decision about selling or keeping an item sooner rather than later because then the party will be able to upgrade gear faster as a group rather than carrying around a +1 longsword that no one really wants to use but are hauling around with you "just in case". If 400 gold is the difference between getting better armor now or waiting until after the next dungeon, everyone would get a greater benefit from selling the sword that might get used by 1 character in a few encounters. Plus 400 gold is technically "worth" more to you at these lower levels than it will be later. Just my 2 pence. ^_~

So, the party is keeping the potions, ring of protection +1, masterwork ranseur, masterwork thieves' tools, +1 longsword, the book of monsters and the bottle of wine. Is that it? If so, the divvy is a nice even 750 gold for Masdok, Simflay and Grulyn.

After some consideration I have decided I need to take an indefinite hiatus from nearly all of my games. Please continue without me. If that means there is not a spot for me when I return, I will understand. You can bot me or just remove me from scenes as you see fit; whatever is best for the party. If my PC dies due to botting decisions I will not be too aggrieved.

My energy levels are just too low and my burnout and disinterest is just too high. I need to be able to focus on taking care of myself without pressure from myself to return to my games. Things will probably get better once I get into a habit of regular exercise, which could be as soon as a few weeks from now.

Don't worry about me, though. I am doing okay. I live with my wife and 3 kids and that helps keep me from being totally dejected. Taking care of them, spending time with them, etc. Continues to bring a lot of meaning and purpose to me life.
