Alright folks ... heading out to spend the last afternoon and evening of the year celebrating with my wife... see you all next year :)

Simflay |

Howdy folks ... just letting you know that I will be away, starting tomorrow (Monday 6th of Jan) until 8 days later (Tuesday 14th of Jan). I will have reduced internet access during this time and may not be able to contribute much. Bad timing I know, given that we are just winding into a combat. I will try to get online as much as I can to post but please feel free to bot me if necessary to keep things rolling along.

Masdok |

I'll be at a conference for work this week and will probably need to be botted throughout the week. I will post when I can but don't wait around for me.

GM Simmy |
I'll have to sort the map out but it's a ten-foot square room, Masdok is at the door, which is at the northeast end of the room, Simflay not far behind, and Grulyn is inside the room towards the back end as that is where Tsuto started.
For finding replacements, mid-combat is an awkward place for someone to join, but I'll let people know that there's an opening at a point where the story allows :)

Masdok |

It would depend on our positioning in the hallway, but if the room is only 10 by 10, it may be that Masdok did not get any attacks of opportunity

Masdok |

Will work on leveling up. Average hit points? Average hit points + 1? Roll hit dice? Keep higher of rolled or average? What's the method?

Masdok |

How do you determine average hit points? Average of d10 is 5.5. Round up?
Edit: leveled up assuming round up

Acharn Edasseril |

Hi, I got a pm from the GM saying that my character looked like the most promising for the game. I hope that still holds... If you want me to expand on anything (background etc), please let me know.
Both unchained rogue and my familiar get weapon finesse for free, but this is obviously useless with eitr (not to mention familiar gets it for free regardless). Can I trade them out? Is it ok to pick accomplished sneak attacker for my character instead? For the familiar I'm really unsure what feats to pick. If anyone have any suggestions I would be happy to hear them.
I put in 1k gear for a 2nd level character, but I don't know if this is appropriate given where you are in the story?
If that's ok I picked up a wand of enlarge person as it seems like multiple people could benefit from that. Though it does come with reduced AC in addition to the benefits, are you guys ok with me using that on your characters? If you're not I should probably swap it over to a wand of mage armour or blend instead.
How do you want me to be introduced?
Can I use factional bab and saves? If not I'll be left with +1 bab at level 5.

Acharn Edasseril |

If someone from the last run does want to join, we're much more in need of a full divine than a full arcane caster. Though there's lay on hands and wands I guess...
I'm just hoping that simflay is ok and healthy...

Simflay |

Hi all - apologies for the delay ... we've gone into full lockdown here in New Zealand this week. You'd think that would give me more time to post, but my employer is on the Essential Business's list and I am able to work from home. The net result is that everything is sort of business as usual (except all our clients are extra needy now) and so I have been ridiculously busy this week and have had little time to keep up with anything. Will try and get back in the groove now.
Welcome aboard Acharn!

Acharn Edasseril |

Great to hear that you're doing well and that you're still with us. Thanks for the warm welcome, I'm happy to be here.

Masdok |

Glad you're still around, Simflay. Hope the busyness and potential stress doesn't get you down too much.
And yes, welcome to the team Acharn!

Simflay |

Strangely, the being locked down to home isn't bothering me too much. I've been working from home for the last 6 or 7 weeks anyway as I recover from my bout of bronchitis. So I'm sort of used to it by this point. Of course before I at least had the option of going out, which is now reduced down to visiting the supermarket or medical services (if needed), so I guess it remains to be seen if that starts to grate over time. It'll be things like this game that see people through I think. Online connections that can carry on regardless.
So I appreciate having you folks around :)

Masdok |

Thanks for the update Simflay.
---
I strongly recommend that we adopt a standard operating procedure in this dungeon and any others. It makes things go much smoother for dungeon crawls in play by post.
I propose something like this:
Upon entering every room/hallway/area, assuming there are no immediate threats or other interruptions:
* Acharn takes 10 on perception with Guidance from Simflay on searching for traps to get a 21. Masdokm and Grulyn both make aid perception checks to possibly boost him to 23 or 25.
* Simflay scans the room thoroughly with detect magic
The GM posts all of the above along with the results. If there is nothing for us to do, the GM moves us to the next entryway clockwise from the one we just entered through (skipping any entryways we've already explored completely) and repeats.
There are usually enough combats, traps, treasures, etc. for us to interact with that there is plenty for us to do (it's not truly auto pilot) but this keeps the dungeon from dragging out with multi day pauses of everyone going back and forth about which door to go through, making perception checks, etc.
Obviously we can choose to break the clockwise rule in any given room if something makes us think we should; it is just a default to keep things moving.
I've done a lot of dungeon crawls this way and it works great.

Acharn Edasseril |

This sounds like a great idea. Though Acharn can cast guidance on himself as well :). Also, it might be better/easier for everyone if we look for other stuff than just traps, but just add +1 to the result if the things hidden in a room is actually a trap. Also I'm planning to use Clear Ear in dungeons when I'm able. Assuming I can acquiring it, that's another +2.

Acharn Edasseril |

I usually hope/expect to get some information about the abilities/defenses of the monsters from knowledge checks. Though maybe I wasn't successful enough? Without the ability to gain such information from knowledge checks, some encounters will get a lot harder.
In similar vein as above, perhaps you can also roll knowledge checks for monsters we end up fighting and include the result with the description of them? Then we won't have to wait to see if we get relevant information before deciding what to do. Though I understand if you're not comfortable with this and rather want to take a more traditional approach.

Acharn Edasseril |

Yeah I know, tactical info isn't immediately useful right away. For this situation we have now, the info is great. I just hope that when we do get in a battle we can get a bit tactical info as well :).

Acharn Edasseril |

@Grulyn: You posted with the wrong alias again. You can fix it by editing your post and changing it.

Acharn Edasseril |

One thing that really confuse me is if we rested or not? Masdok went ahead and posted as if we did... But both mine and your post makes more sense before resting (and we still didn't warn the priest).

Masdok |

Does anyone *object* to the standard operating procedure I described above? Especially the GM since it will mean a little more work for them?
I thought y'all wanted to rest, so I went along with it. I don't care either way. Someone should go talk to the priest

Simflay |

I have no objection to the standard operating procedure. So long as GM Simmy is happy with it of course. It does sound like it might move things along more quickly.

GM Simmy |
Of course, bearing in mind taking 10 on all things might mean you don't find everything, but I'm happy for you to take ten on those checks in general (unless I say that you cannot for that check).
On the other note, you have been to the priest, but without the information - So, I would say you guys can have a rest and warn Zantus after that :)

Masdok |

Yes, we may miss stuff, but with the aid checks we hopefully won't miss much.
So we told Zantus, rested for the night, and now we're going in, yes? What did Zantus say?

GM Simmy |
"Agreed, go and investigate it, and find out what they are doing there. If there is indeed these magical artifacts, then we don't want those who attacked us getting hold of such things," the mayor adds.
- It's what I posted a few days ago, the mayor was with father Zantus and the mayor told you - considering the sheriff is out of town right now.

Acharn Edasseril |

I feel like we're somewhat stuck waiting on each other. We don't know if we should post about going to the priest or continuing after we visited him. Since we just talked with him, it feels like it would be a bit redundant. At the same time, no one wants to press on until after we are done with that.

Masdok |

I meant when we told him about the journal, which we discovered after the first time we talked to him

Acharn Edasseril |

Oh yeah, an addendum to the standard operating procedure if I may? Could I stealth along the tunnel? If masok has the light, I could stay exactly out of normal light range and still have full visibility myself due to low-light vision, but also be able to stealth. I also want to use clear-ear. Can I apply that now?

Masdok |

completely underwater at work right now. please bot me as necessary.
Masdok can probably help with tracking

Masdok |

are we following the standard operating procedure yet in terms of which doors to go through in what order?
week from hell coming up for me; big work deadline + moving all at the same time. Please bot me as necessary this week.

Masdok |

It never rains but it pours... My grandfather fell off a tricycle today and hit his head. He is in the hospital, possibly on his death bed. Most of the things keeping me from pbp have been positive life things but this one really sucks.

Masdok |

My grandfather passed away this morning. I am going to travel and spend the next week with my family. I will have a lot of time on my hands so might still post here and there, but I won't be •trying• to keep up. Don't wait around for me and bot me as necessary.

Acharn Edasseril |

Sorry to hear that, my condolences to you both.
