Suddenly a tiny little dragon appears above the pit.
"You're friends with Iggy? Why didn't you say so in the first place? Any friend of Iggy's is a friend of mine. He looks down at Des and Willem. "Sorry about that. There's all sorts of nasty things running about these days; one can't be too careful."

Willem:
As you check over Des and look about the pit for a way to get out, you spy a glint of metal on the ground: it's a ring! And when you stoop to pick it up, you spy a way through the brambles to the fare side of the pit, where the slope is more gentle and should allow your egress.

"Y'know, there have been all sorts of undead around these parts lately, but I should've noticed you were a bit too lively to be undead...trouble is, I'm not much of a fighter, so I have to rely on tricks to survive."

"Those wretched undead have been plaguing our forest for days. Together, we could eliminate this undead threat...in fact, I might know where the zombies are coming from. I'll ask some of my fey forest friends for information to see if I can pinpoint the source of the undead scourge. In the meantime, I recommend you spend the night near my home, and we can leave at first light." And with that, he zips off into the forest.

There's little to do but make camp. You set up watch and spend the night near Riddywhipple's log.

At dawn, Riddywipple wakes you by buzzing excitedly around your heads, chattering in his squeaky, singsong voice.
"It's time to strike camp, for I know where to go to root out this plague of undead. Last night, I flew over to my friendly pixie friend Pollinia, a trixie youngster who lit out with me for a bit of a fly-around, where we chatted about all the happy happenings in the forest as well as some untidy tidings. As it turns out, the carved cave near my pegasi friendlies has a new body that everybody agrees is disagreeable. The old cold cavern used to be used by humans long before long ago, but it’s been empty as a log since then.

“Now it seems an unseemly creature has wandered in from the bit of bog near Wartle and taken to torturing and terrifying the forest. The monster’s name is Marigana, and trappers chased her from her Wartle morass after she kidnapped some napping kids from the town and turned them into deadly undead. Now she’s taken up taking over Sanos, and wants to spread her terrible territory. We can make a joint journey to see the poisonous new occupant, but it will be doubtlessly undeadly.”

"Well good morning to you too." Kaepora and his shadow stretch themselves awake. "Did they give you any description about this Marigana by chance? If not, I suspect we can figure out what we are dealing with when we see her."

Kaepora draws his wand of Mage Armor, striking himself and his Shadow.

Willem pockets what he found and moves through the area to get up and out, eventually speaking with the trickster fae and introducing himself properly. In the morning, he listens to the story and picks out the most important thing: someone was stealing children. That's all he needed to hear.

"We will stop this monster, and rescue anyone that may be left."

Though he didn't appreciate being pranked by the fae, the fact that he found something in the process simmers his frustration down a bit. He goes to pack up Des and his gear. While doing so, he answers Grax. "Doesn't matter what she might want. She's stealing children and turning them into undead. Her wants are irrelevant."

Riddywhipple says to Grax, "Marigana lived in the swamp near Wartle, but the locals chased her off after she started stealing children from the town to add to her zombie horde. Now she’s moved into Sanos and is beginning to carve out an undead territory."

"As for you, Ser Knight, I was merely looking to protect my home. I am relieved that your noble steed was nimble enough to escape injury. Did you manage to find that magic ring down there? It's been sitting down in that pit for quite a long time? A rather sneaky sort who'd been robbing the local fey met his fate at the bottom of my welcome party...deservedly so."

Spellcraft DC:18:

After gathering your gear and examining the ring, Riddywhipple leads you North, deeper into the forest.

maps & images for The Ruby Phoenix Tournament |

As you wind your way through the forest, Riddywipple tells you that you're approaching the home of his longtime friends, pegasi who might be able to offer assistance in defeating the undead. The party follows an overgrown road until they reach a muddy, reedy lake surrounded by underbrush and large stones.

As you approach, you see the silhouettes of statuesque pegasi grazing in the glade. However, as you move closer, they see that the pegasi are covered in deep wounds and dried blood, and that they graze not upon grass, but upon the carcass of a fallen creature. The blood-encrusted pegasi turn toward you, and clumsily lift into the air. Riddywhipple shrieks incoherently in terror, anger and frustration at seeing his friends turned into undead horrors.

The black pegasi charges, slamming itself into Ser Willem's mighty steed, injuring the horse.

K's shadow is similarly thwarted, although its blow hits your enemy...it just fails to do any damage.

I don't believe the strength damage would carry through if the attack fails to penetrate DR, but that's immaterial because the STR damage is negative energy effect, and these are undead...Good news, though: it doesn't increase their strength. Perhaps it should! (kidding!)

Kaepora, how are you starting a performance as a move action? Normally, you'd need to be 7th level bard (sensei) to do that. Let me know how you're pulling that off, or let me know which action you're taking, inspire courage or casting shield.

I think they're fey?

NE Medium Fey (aquatic, shapechanging)
(unless you own Tomb of Horrors...oops.)
Ingrid, you get one question: Special Attacks, Special Defenses, Special Qualities, Resistances, DR, SR, etc.

hmm: 2d20 ⇒ (18, 10) = 28

Also, when I did preview on the post, both PCs made their Will saves. Then on final post, Grax save changed (and no, I didn't change the order of dice I was rolling). Not certain what happened there. But I'm not going to change it to the PCs detriment.

Whew, Grax caught a break!

Grax shifts his target, trying to take advantage of having the reddish Pegasus surrounded.

Kelpies do NOT have DR NOR SR (regardless of sourcebook)

Grax seizes the opportunity to deliver a mighty blow to the red pegazombie, sending it back into the realm of the dead. Unfortunately, that leaves Kiaru without a flank buddy, and his spear attack isn't as effective.

Grax is not providing a flank, so no sneak damage. Please try and remember to either provide damage type or name the weapon being used. Thanks.
