I've decided to purchase a Grenade Launcher, Grenadier Bracket to attach it to my gun and a handcannon! Now Bravo has the kit I always wanted him to build from the start. Unfortunately, that's wiped out my budget and I don't actually have any ammo for it...DERP.

S.E.T. |

LOL! In a F2F game, we started as 12th level characters. I went with a soldier whose second style is bombard. So, theoretically, he's a grenade expert... but they're too damned expensive to buy. I feel your pain! (Having ridiculous amount of fun with that character... a goblin in Ironclad Bulwark powered armor.)

Nalun could buy a few grenades.

Thankfully Grenade Expert allows me to make my own grenades on the fly, which alleviates that a bit! :P

What are the options regarding translation software or devices Sounsbyte might be able to pick? They'd come in handy with having to deal with the resident aquatics, if by Chekhov wills it we're to end up meeting one or two.

GM Coyote |

Forgot to respond. Off the top of my head, spell gems of comprehend language or a lingo serum.

S.E.T. |

Set is as good as broke (12 creds; he spent it all on rum and women).

There's also the Tetred Certified Translator, which while it can't fully translate an alien language, can give us enough to work with to communicate basic stuff like "We come in peace," or "Where's the restrooms?"
Also, if I do use any of Nalun's incredibly generous gift on grenades, which ones should I invest in? I doubt they'll be of much use underwater...

Soundbyte of Sunlight |

Thanks Bravo, I think I'll pick that up. Everything else just isn't as viable right now.

GM: Kind of going back to the discussion on the non-vocal communications, I had a question about how you want to rule on the utility of personal computers for sending messages, what kind of action might be required, and how the message could be received.
Put another way, I'm wondering if Set could use his computer/datapad to send messages without speaking aloud and, if so, whether the message which be simply in text or include audio, and what kind of action it would be.
Set has a tier 1 computer he has miniaturized twice and upgraded to have a 1 mile range. He also has a datajack, which provides:
Any handheld computer can be inserted directly into the port, while larger systems need to be connected by an adapter cable. Having the system connected directly to your nervous system obviates the need for an interface to access data on a system. For computers (link):
While most computers have access to remote systems and local infospheres, this connection does not necessarily extend to other devices. A computer that controls a comm unit can use that comm unit to send and receive messages but cannot use it to control devices.
I'm reading this to say the computer could be used to control devices up to one mile, or could be used to control a comm unit within a mile. If Set selected his comm unit as the device his computer controls, and as he connects with his computer through a datajack, could he send and receive messages through his commlink without having to speak aloud, what action would be required, and as the recipient is likely getting the message through their own commlink, would it be text only or audio?

GM Coyote |

In the past I’ve generally generally ran with players being able to send simple audio or text messages through their comms, sort of like the message spell. I’d allow for more complex ones and images to be sent through Set’s commlink.
For the detonator, I’d rule that you can’t use them with grenades. Way I see it, grenades are generally a mechanical detonation and couldn’t be activated remotely.

Got it; thanks!

Truly comfortable going along with this but just to confirm, the way the detonator is written, that is RAW one of the uses for it (link):
Detonator
This conical device primes and detonates explosives (including grenades) with a push of a button. Programming a detonator to a specific package of explosives takes 1 minute, after which the detonator can be triggered in one of several ways. The detonator can be set to ignite its payload with the simple press of a button (no action), a four-digit command code (a move action), or a complex input method, such as scanning your retina or thumbprint (a full action). You choose the triggering method when setting the detonator. A detonator detonates its payload only if it is within 500 feet, but some detonators can make use of signal-boosting technologies at the risk of becoming vulnerable to countermeasures like signal jammers and other effects. Explosives have the same price, effect, and weight as grenades. If you successfully set an explosive on a stationary object with a detonator using the Engineering skill, the explosive’s damage ignores half of the object’s hardness.
The debate I linked to was primarily about the possibility of completely abusing that and breaking the game. If you want to go with they're just not functional with grenades at all, any objection to my refunding my purchase of a detonator for 150 credits (and probably my frag grenade, too, since a -3 on attack rolls could be... hazardous)? Sorry! Not trying to make a headache for you; just want to figure out my kit if we're house ruling that one.

RAW detonators are usable with grenades. My operative in another campaign makes a habit of creating booby traps with grenades and detonators. It's hella expensive but often he finds grenades on dead bodies.

![]() |

Although, to limit the cheese the GM set a -5 engineering penalty for each grenade past the 1st I'm linking together. So, the most I've been able to do so far is 3 grenades.
That was fun.

GM Coyote |

Oops, didn’t notice that detail. I like Nalun’s idea for penalties for stringing more grenades together. I’ll allow detonators with grenades, with a -5 engineering penalty for each grenade beyond the first.

S.E.T. |

Took me by surprise, too, when a player first pointed it out to me. (Didn't help he was trying to sell the "I can put 20 of them on and drop it in a room.) I trust my players but I still insisted he show me the as written, I just thought he had to be wrong. :) He was wrong on the unlimited #, though!
Anyway, thanks, and one follow-up question on the engineering check. What's the base DC for that? Given the cost, I don't see Set doing many beyond the first, but just want to get a sense of the target here.
Now watch... after all this, none of us will think to use the grenades with a detonator. I'm going to have to do it once now, just on principle.

GM Coyote |

DC looks like 10.

![]() |

So, in that game we use a base 10Dc +5 for each additional grenade. The GM has a rule (or it might be RAW I dunno) that if you fail by more than 5 bad things happen. He allows me to take 10 when wiring the traps if I'm on the ship, but no taking 20.
I suspect that if I rolled really bad he'd have the grenades explode me.

S.E.T. |

The ‘’splody kind?
I dunno. Sonic? Necro? Cold? Electricity?

S.E.T. |

Oh no! Hope you're on the mend and it's nothing too serious. Take care of yourself.

GM Coyote |

Hey folks, bit of a life situation update. I’ve been travelling in Europe for the past few months, and though I’m scheduled to go home to the States at the end of March, the new travel ban has thrown a wrench into some plans and made things complicated. I likely won’t be able to get a post up for a day or two, but I’ll keep you all posted.

S.E.T. |

Oh wow! Take care. I’m sure you’re getting tons of advice but we live in DC and have some friends in the state department. PM me if you need some help.
Last I heard, the travel ban announced last night actually does not apply to US citizens trying to return home, but it was confusing as heck.
In the meantime, I’ll keep torturing poor Bravo.

GM Coyote |

Alright, I'm currently at Heathrow waiting for my flight. In roughly 12 hours I'll be back in the States!

S.E.T. |

GM, I hope you made it back okay. I’m seeing stories about the airports being a total shitshow.

GM Coyote |

Made it back totally fine. They did a corona screening as I got off the plane but I made it through no problems. Been majorly jetlagged, however.

S.E.T. |

I'm neck deep in virus related shenanigans right now, my state just closed down all schools for a month....I'm a school administrator.
FWIW, as a parent who is in mandatory work from home, but also as a son who has parents and in-laws who are in high-risk groups, thank you.
While it’s a little stressful to have to juggle our son and work, I think it’s a responsible move and appreciate it.
It’s a crazy time.

Bonar "Bravo" Vizetelly |

Yeah. I'm considered an "Essential Infrastructure Service Worker." For answering the phone. At a luxury hotel. Attached to a closed Mall.
I've been going in to work, getting on my suit, and sitting in the office for hours waiting for the phone to ring. I managed to finish reading an entire NOVEL on my shift today!

GM Coyote |

Howdy folks, I'll be on a short road trip for a few days starting Thursday. I'll do my best to keep up with posting, but reception in the desert is unpredictable at best.

S.E.T. |

Have fun and stay safe! (Though the desert seems about as safe as it gets.)

Soundbyte of Sunlight |

Is piloting not very useful in this situation, Coyote? I've never done vehicular combat encounters in this game.

Soundbyte of Sunlight |

Could I use GhOst Sound to try and scare it off, or distract it for a turn or two?

GM Coyote |

I'd allow Ghost Sound as a distraction.

S.E.T. |

FYI - It seems like the Windows installation on my desktop is corrupted or there is a problem with the SSD that it (and a lot of my personal files) were on. Trying to copy everything now to a backup drive, reformat the SSD and reinstall windows, but currently limited to my work laptop and iPhone, so posting may be a little difficult. Hopefully I'll be back up to 100% by the end of today.

Krizen Longfur |

Side note here from me as well - my wife and I are trying to put an offer on a house. Read 3 hours of purchasing contract last night. I might be a bit slow responding over the next week if everything goes as hoped.

S.E.T. |

Are we assuming Nalun has dropped? Looks like he hasn't been online in about a month.

GM Coyote |

Think so. I think we've managed pretty well without his combat backup, so we'll just continue without recruiting another player.

S.E.T. |

Yup. Works for me. Just wanted to confirm.

S.E.T. |

Weird, didn’t get an update that Soundbyte has posted. I’ve been awake for all of nine minutes so I’ll get a post up once I’m properly moving.
Coffee first! (Or tea if you're some sort of weirdo.)
Players in one of my Hell's Vengeance tables have been reporting notifications were sporadic for them. I've been fine so far, but am trying to click on everything at least once a day.

Bonar "Bravo" Vizetelly |

I have a drow technomancer in another game who's a coffee fanatic. She just helped with a fight, and managed to avoid getting hit at all despite only having her junksword and a nightgown!

Soundbyte of Sunlight |

Soundbyte isn't having none of that prophecy nonsense, he's but a humble server(nt) of his goddess. U-U

GM Coyote |

Bit of a life update, the store I work at is reopening, and I've just been called in to help get things back into working order. It shouldn't make much of a difference in posting, as I'll likely only be working a few days a week, but I wanted to let you all know
