Ravens the Birdmaster |

Simon carefully moves up to peer inside the now open box. he stands in such a way as to avoid the pit and other traps.
Ravens readies to spring/fight/run as Simon opens the box.
"Meh. We're being too jumpy," Ravens says of himself....as he walks down the hallway (moving along the wall the entire way.
Sadly, it's becoming clear to me that we're not going to make it anywhere in this maze at this posting and pushing paste. I may die, but I won't be bored.

DMTFY |

Simon: Perception: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (17) + 23 = 40 You notice 2 things, one is that after your mage hand pushed the button a needle popped out looking to do some damage to you. 2) You notice a tiny metal lever at the back of the box.
Ravens: Reflex DC20: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27...success! 1d100 ⇒ 83
You manage to avoid the pit trap by jumping forward.
I will add some more of the riddle now that you are further along

Simon Demarkus |

Simon attempts to Mage hand the lever.
If that doesn't work he'll Mage hand a strip of cloth around it then pull the strip himself.

Simon Demarkus |

Simon:Excellent choice Your mage hand wraps a portion of cloth around the lever and you pull it. The pit trap in front of the mural opens revealing a pit full of metal spikes.
Simon looks unsurprised as the pit opens in front of him.
"Figures. " He says.
Simon continues his search floor, walls, ceiling, progressively moving toward ravens position while avoiding the pit traps.

Jeneva follows Simon's lead, since the boulder trick didn't seem to do much to help, and he looks like he knows where he's going.

At the end of the long, painted hallway the red tile path splits in two. One branch leads towards A 7 foot stone archway decorated with three large crystals and filled with an opaque swirling mist the second path heads towards the southern wall where it ends directly underneath a large mosaic of green tile in the shape of the demons face its mouth forms a large gaping hole about 3 foot wide and dead black.
The 3 crystals from left to right are yellow, blue and orange.
I will give you all the rest of the riddle tonight. Also I have moved Simon and Jeneva

Simon tosses a bit of fabric ties to a rock into the gaping mouth of the demon face and examines the outcome.
He'll also thoroughly examine the area around both the face and the crystals. He's looking for traps and maybe clues.

The rock and fabric are ripped from your hand quite violently and are gone into the darkness.
He'll also thoroughly examine the area around both the face and the crystals. He's looking for traps and maybe clues.
There is nothing that stands out to you about the demon face beyond its exquisite workmanship. As you get within 1' of the crystals they begin to glow.
I have put the rest of the riddle in the campaign info section

ill think about the riddle when my brain is a bit less fried.

Ta'ruk |

Ta'ruk carefully makes his way down the hall following the same path as the others. He joins them at the end of the hall.
"Well the riddle says shun the green. I think it means the demon. Are you sure we don't want to take our chances with the tormentor?"

![]() |

Skiron saunters into the new section behind them.
"I'm with Ta'ruk; I would favor the tormentor."
I scan this new area for secret doors while I'm at it.

Simon Demarkus |

Simon examines the riddle for a time. Then returns to look at the gems.
"I hate riddles. Anyone know what this nonsense might indicate? Assuming it's even to be trusted of course. "

Ravens. Your pretty sure that as of right now your choices are demons mouth, misty archway or secret door.

i have moved you and Skiron down with the rest of the group. BTW I had a gpod laugh at your comment about taking chances witb the tormentor.

"I must concur. I should not like to experience that sort of violent reaction from putting a body in that mouth, if the fate of your stone is any indication. The 'tormentor' it is."

Ravens the Birdmaster |

Ravens spits and looks through his pack for something that might help him get at the door who's floor opens in a pit.
With a look at all the slackjaws who are doing nothing to help, Ravens takes out his crowbar and some silk rope, unsure what to do with either yet.
He carefully begins to bang on the pit trap until it opens, trying to spring it so that the boundaries of it are known.
He bangs and bangs until it opens having no more plans beyond that.

Ravens the Birdmaster |

Ravens looks back at all the rubble then at the pit. Thinking about how long it took them to clear the debris, it makes him angry to have to move it again, but he sees no better solution.
Ravens goes to get the boulder and roll it in. If necessary, he will roll the 2nd one in and get more debris too.
When he can safely stand on the pit without it opening or closing, he will open the secret door.

![]() |

Skiron hears Ravens's banging, and strides over to him, thieves' tools in hand.
"Careful! This entire place is a work of art, only a complete fool would...actually, that ought to work," he says as he begins to see Ravens's plan unfold.

Simon Demarkus |

Simon began to pull his thieves tools out of his boot then stopped to watch the scene unfold. With a shrug he goes to help move rubble.

As the door opens you can hear a horrible grinding sound from within the room. A huge horned beast with stone-like skin, wings and 4 clawed arms lunges towards you.

I am going to send a couple of PM's off, before I attack

Hearing the grinding sound as the door behind is opened, Jeneva makes her way back, walking along the already-deemed-safe paths the group has thus far traversed, not interested in braving any newfound traps in the middle of combat. She draws her blade as she moves.
Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Move speed is 40, so 80 for a full move should get her back to where I've moved her token. Feel free to adjust if there are any pits, breaks, etc. she would have had to go around that would have reduced the distance; she would know where all such things the group encountered are, but I have a much less efficient memory =)

You are all free to attack!

Ravens the Birdmaster |

Round 1
Ravens accepts his rofflestomping with the measure of the man he is: with lots of screaming and crying. There is no part of his masculinity that survives and very few gods (both dark and light) that he does not pray to as his flesh is shredded beyond measure.
6 attacks, 6 hits. HP 8/75
Ravens does a full withdrawl, moving back and hoping someone will be kind enough to kick his spleen to him if they go down the hallway.

Effective, Skiron thinks to himself as his mutilated ally lurches desperately past him, but rather dull. I'd like to think we can do a little better than that....
What kind of Knowledge check applies to this thing? It might be a good policy in general if you told us that much at the beginning of a fight with anything we haven't seen before.
He stares intently at the space in front of the monster, and from nothing appears an imposing-looking creature that looks rather like the union of a centaur and a malformed lobster, with monstrous claws, a mass of tentacles around its mouth, and a wicked beak visible within it.
I move slightly, and summon a fiendish chuul with the Bite, Improved Damage (Claws), and Poison evolutions in front of the monster!
Without hesitation, the thing lays into the four-armed fiend like a starving man faced with a banquet.
Claw I: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (4) + 16 = 20 Damage: 3d6 + 9 ⇒ (6, 5, 1) + 9 = 21
Claw II: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (15) + 16 = 31 Damage: 3d6 + 9 ⇒ (2, 4, 1) + 9 = 16
Bite: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (6) + 15 = 21 Damage: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14
If the bite attack hits, the (other) monster must make a DC 21 Fortitude save or take the following Strength damage:
Poison: 1d4 ⇒ 3
It would be nice if we could somehow work some chuul paralytic tentacle action in, but RAW makes that contingent on a grapple check, which you don't do...on the other hand, RAW doesn't give it a venomous beak. What say you, DM?

Simon Demarkus |

Simon Casts Shield and draws his sword.
By the map the thing appears to still be in the hallway. If so I'll hold my ground to hit the thing as it passes. If not I'll move myself into a more advantageous position for next round.

As far as the bite paralyzing. I also took the rend damage away from my beasty. Which would have flat out killed Ravens.
Simon you are correct the gargoyle is in the hallway

Though the gargoyle's strikes be mighty, some unholy force beyond the strength of its exoskeleton sustains the starspawn, and it remains relentless.
My Chuul has 63 hit points left...unless the gargoyle's attacks happen to be Good-aligned.
The gargoyle must make another DC 21 Fortitude save or take the following Strength damage:

COOOKIIIEEE!!!: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (6) + 17 = 23 damage: 3d6 + 9 ⇒ (4, 3, 6) + 9 = 22
Seeing that his nightmare creature is faring a great deal better against the monster than Ravens did, Skiron takes the opportunity to pour a shallow vial of pale blue liquid into his ragged companion's gasping mouth.
I move next to Ravens and give him a cure light wounds infusion.
cure light wounds: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
