I might have missed it in your intro, but what is the posting schedule for this once it's underway?

The reason you didn't see it is actually because I forgot it!

I will likely be able to post quite a few times per day, since I'm almost never away from a computer (go go gadget technology career).

But I don't expect that from everyone, either.

Once a day would be fine, but if you can do more, that's awesome. General rule of thumb is Quality > Quantity. Obviously I'll be doing my part to keep us moving and on track.

Yup, love it, love everything about it. One question, though: Is Evril back here because it was his home, is he searching for information on his parents, and if so, why now, or is it more because Sarenrae guided him there?

I see it more because, to him, Sarenrae guided him there. However, he is a bit curious if any of his mother's family is still in the area and he'd definitely be curious if he heard rumors of say a vampire who resembled him........

@padawan: I chose the destined bloodline. And I think I will get a Handy Hacersack,my Strength is lacking, to say the least.

Pari's Background!

About Parinaa:
Step 1: Write 5 background and concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the character. These can be a concept overview, a list of important life events, a physical description, a personality profile…whatever you need to get an image in your mind. 5 is just a minimum…more elements are encouraged!

1. Pari is creepy. She is tall and human shaped, with long limbs and a smooth-lined and lithe figure. She’s pretty enough from afar. Her skin is a pale blueish color, with swirls and patterns like light playing under water. She has smooth silk of hair, also blue, that flows over her shoulders and around her shoulder blades. And she even has even, girlish features that would make literally anyone except her pretty even, girlish features that would make literally anyone except her pretty. But then she smiles. And she’s creepy. She has rows and rows of teeth, like a shark, that do not fit her face. On her neck flutter gills that show a slight reddish color underneath. She has milky blueish eyes, and apparently no eyelids (at least in the same sense humans have them). Well, she does have eyelids – but they’re pale and underneath. She doesn’t blink much, but when she does, its apparent she’s got at least two pairs of lids, the under ones flickering only a bit now and then. Her hands are long and spindly, with webs between her fingers, except between the forefinger and middle finger of her left hand, where it appears to have been cut. She is wearing white robes that she keeps clean generally, padding about in bare feet. Over her back is thrown a bow of shiny dark wood.

2. Pari is an Undine basically raised in the Blackfens. A swampish Undine, she is used to living in the brackish water and slimy green vegetation there. Still, a chance meeting with some Tengu that live there taught the young Undine a little about the outside world and the curious blue creature headed out into the world. Wandering without a whole lot of money didn’t really treat her all that well, but eventually she reached Korvosa, and there she stayed, finding a place under the docks where she could be close to the water. It wasn’t quite home, but it would have to do.

3. In Korvosa, Parinaa found her calling at a temple to Irori – and that was the art of self-perfection. With a keen eye for ranged combat, and a natural canny understanding of the world developed from living in the swamps, Pari made an excellent monk, and trained there for a good number of years. Not all the monks were too keen on the odd blue creature amongst them, but for the most part, Pari didn’t cause too much trouble.

4. Parinaa is rude. Her low Charisma score is intended to reference not her appearance (which is quite nice if she never opens her mouth), but her attitude. She is creepy and blunt, and often quite inhuman in her mannerisms.

5. Parinaa is Lawful Good. She believes that the world should an orderly place, and she is good. She wants to help people generally, and may just go and do what she thinks is right without waiting for anyone else. She finds that her efforts to help are not often appreciated, but she does it anyway.

Pari's Goals:
Step 2: List at least two goals for the character. At least one of these goals should be one that the character has, while another should be one that you, as a player, want to see developed over the course of the game.
1. Parinaa wants to find a better home than Korvosa. She is less than impressed with human cities, and she misses her swamp. So she’ll be on the lookout for a good new place to be.
2. I’d like Pari to find some more of her kind – she doesn’t know a whole lot more than her swamp-friends. And she wasn’t all that impressed with the collective intelligence of the swamp-folk!

Pari's Secrets:
Step 3: List at least two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet. This will help me in creating plots that center around your character. I will also be creating a third secret which you as a player will not be aware of, so expect some surprises!
1. When she first got to Korvosa, Pari actually stole a few gold and supplies in order to keep herself going until she got involved with the temple there. She is deeply ashamed of her start this way, and always hopes to have a chance to pay it back somehow.

2. Pari’s Tengu friend is a rogue that has gotten on the wrong side of the law in his time. She might have an issue with that if she found out…

Pari's People:
Step 4: Describe at least three people that are tied to the character. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile. If you like, you can include an enemy of yours here as well, so I have an instant NPC nemesis to throw at you.
1. Astrix – Pari’s Tengu friend. He lives in Korvosa still, and he might pop up. She likes him, insofar as he’s different than her somewhat inbred family at home, and has an interesting outlook (Chaotic Good) on the world.

2. Alarra – Pari’s mother, or the undine woman that raised her. She loves Pari, but Pari has always been an odd and distant child to her. She is not sure who her father is, but it doesn’t really matter. She tried to raise her only daughter alone. The stress of providing means that they are sometimes distant with eachother, and Parinaa has been gone for a long time.

3. Pari had her fair share of rival monks. Her cold and somewhat standoffish attitude didn’t really help her relationship with them. To her, she is an oddity; a good monk, but not that great to be around.

Pari's Quirks:
Step 5: Describe three memories that your character has. They don’t have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.
1. Pari cut the webbing between the fingers of her right hand to make it easier to shoot and hold arrows. That is a good barometer of her dedication to what she is.

2. Pari likes to be wet. She finds what downtime she can to go put herself in water, and is usually damp in some manner. She also drinks a lotl

3. Pari has an undeniable calling towards the ocean. Despite being raised in a swamp, the vastness of a real sea is something that always seems to make her feel like she belongs to something bigger and better.

Damn, you guys are going to make it so hard to choose.

*flutters eyelashes* That's our job. :D

As long as Shishka is still remembered hopefully she has her grappling hook latched onto this game.

do you want an alias made before selections are made?

I wanna keep her.

Waiting patiently amongst the trees.

Dark Archive

Arbiter Deimos is mostly crunched up. I do need to go back and add another item or two and find a way to reduce my encumberence. Gold is heavy.

Question for the GM. I'm taking the flag-bearer feat. Would an acceptable banner be a symbol of the Celestial Host? All worshippers of Sarenrae / the Celestial Host would gain the benefits. I'm not sure if we've enough PCs that can benefit from that. I know it'd work for at least a few of us.

I can always change the flag, but I like that image.

Hey Lexi, its Vik from the Kingmaker game....did not notice you were interested in this one as well...best of luck, and maybe we will get to be in a group together again!!

Yyyyyaaaaaay! :)

LOL...what are you playing here??

Pari. Surly undine monk :)

Shishka is definitely still remembered. I actually have a word document going where I'm listing everyone, to make sure that no one is forgotten, and it also gives me a place to jot down notes, like hooks and tie-ins for their backgrounds and everything.

Making an alias is unnecessary for those who haven't yet - I know a lot of people don't want to have empty aliases hanging around. As long as everything is in the thread where I can find it, I don't mind.

Encumbrance sucks and I hate it.

And yeah, I think the Celestial Host should be good. I know there are a good, I don't know, 6-8 applicants who have ties to Sarenrae, though obviously I'm not sure who is getting in yet. But there's a strong bet that at least one other person would benefit from it.

Is it possible that you might run more than 1 group, due to the volume of submissions?? Just curious...

That's a tall order, running more than one group at a time can be a pain.

@Detective Katana: I ran a Shackled City game and a Expedition to the Demonweb Pits game. I concur it's difficult, but, if you have the time for it, it can be run quite well.

Soooo exciteeeedddd. :D

Absolutely it can be done well. Not going to lie, the first time I got roped into doing it (My first time trying to DM) it was a nightmare and that has personally colored my view of the subject. I've seen other people do it well, but I don't think I'd ever be like "Hey, lemme give that another shot."

woooow. no fighters or cavaliers? I am honestly shocked. we're bout to be defending the world from an army and no one wants to be charging through enemy ranks buffing whole armies? No one wants a pure feat-driven combat machine? (I see multiclassers, but surprisingly no pures.)

Sounds like we got a group with guts.

My kind of players.

Don't worry I am an elemental knight I literally wield both steel and fire!

Woo finally finished it to some degree of satisfaction. I needed to create a reason for her dark side to be dark not just, "im mad that my dad is gone!" so here it is. any criticism is welcome.

Ilysisyn's Backstory:

A raven circles above the plains, watching the group of traveller's far below. The group of several dozen humans in a caravan had been together for almost two weeks and Arkah had been feasting on the scraps that such groups always left behind. He was not the only raven following the humans either. As the sun set that night Arkah perched in a tall tree several hundred yards from the camp, beady eyes watching the human fires. They would dig a hole and dump their rubbish, leaving the scavengers a feast in the morning. The call of owls interrupted him as he slept and one eye popped open as his head twisted towards the sound. New lights greeted his eyes in the distance through the trees. They came towards him, the smell he identified instantly as goblin and his ears confirmed it soon after with their high pitched clattering language. They had come from the mountains nearby, an unusually large amount for a raid force. Clearly they intended to overwhelm the humans in bloody violence. The human keeping watch this side of the camp was thankfully alert and gave the cry. "GOBLINS!" Annoyed at being iscovered so quickly the goblins surged forward angrily. Three other soldiers joined the human, weapons drawn and glowing with an intense light. "Kill Paldins!" was screeched throughout the goblin horde and a warhorn sounded. An answering call was heard further away. The four humans and the thirty-odd goblin band were now engaged in battle, some slipping past fearsome paladins towards the camp where others, less skilled guarded. Arkah took flight to get a better view. Perhaps some early meat, his favourite food, would be had tonight. He had seen several battles of the like and had developed quite a taste for raw meat. Another group of goblins had approached from the other side and wer almost at the edge of the camp. Spotting a goblin corpse away from the fighting, the greedy raven descended for a fresh meal. Arkah was unable to slow down and slammed to the ground next to the dead goblin. Seconds later his heart stopped beating and his eyes became lifeless. A stray goblin arrow protruded from his chest.

The Paladin's of Sarenrae rode for Canorate. The goblins had been defeated, the few survivors fleeing. It was worse for the human camp. The four Paladin's, guardians of this particular group, hired to see them safe to their destination had failed. One had fallen, another severely wounded would survive with some healing. No other human had survived besides two children, Maurkus Gordensi and Sendril Dragondin. They were taken to Canorate where one of the Paladin's appointed himself as their guardian to ensure they would not end up in the streets and as a personal atonement for being unable to protect the safety of those he was charged with. Canorate became their new home and here they learned the teachings of Sarenrae. Their guardian hoped with time the scars of their loss would heal and he did all he could to aid this.

The young teenagers dealt with their losses in different ways. Sendril used the tenets and teachings of Sarenrae to strengthen herself and she prayed often for the light to be shone on all. She worked as a healer in the temples, wanting to serve the people that came there for help no matter which god the people followed. She was no adventurer to take the flame out herself. Maurkus because of his growing love for Sendril stayed with her and did everything to be near her. But he was unhappy and had let a dark seed grow inside him. Perhaps he stayed as close as possible to Sendril to keep it from growing, the light in her made him fell better when the nightmares overwhelmed him. Each day together she realised he loved her (she had loved him since she was a girl) and they soon married, young though they might be they didn't let anything stop them. The paladin blessed their union that day. Maurkus and Sendra were happy and in love. Maurkus was able to keep the secret in his heart, the darkness and hate for the creatures that killed his family, away from Sendril even as it grew. He would sneak off at night to the parts of the city that most sensible people avoided. He felt the pull and felt at home among those few hidden men. They could sense the taint of his heart and how divided it was. He soon became one of them and asked for help as they were unable to have a baby and had been trying ever since they got married. At the same time Sendril recieved the same blessing from the church to help them. Both of the blessings would work together mysteriously and they were soon pregnant. Ilyrisyn was born a healthy girl but with a strange mark in the centre of her chest, that of two teardrops circling each other, one extremely pale, one quite dark. Special markings were not unknown and it was believed to be a great blessing. It was divined that this meant she would be a protector of the land. Markaus sometimes suspected the meaning of it was more sinister but he of course held his tongue.

Ilyrisyn was an energetic child like most others and quite normal. She liked hearing the messages from her parents about Sarenrae also and when she heard the tale of the Paladin that saved her parents she decided that was what she would become and protect others as repayment to Sarenrae. Her spirit was strong, loving to run and climb, play with her friends and also studied hard for her lessons.

One night she was awoken by the sound of a raven tapping on the roof. She was about to fall back to sleep when she heard the noise of the front door closing, she got up and looked out into the street to see Markaus sneaking away. Too curious for her own good she followed him out of the common district towards the slums, down one dark alley and underground. She waited several minutes before following him down. She had never been into the sewers before and soon became lost, lamenting her decision to leave her bed she began to cry as she could not find her way out. She was found not far from the meeting where her father was and that was the only thing that saved her from a horrible fate. He pleaded for her life and they released her, with her oath to never mention their presence. She was now forced to keep her father's secret aswell and he tried to explain to her many times the things that the goblins had done and how he wanted to do the same to them. He was of a small group of them that felt the same as him, hunting down groups of goblins to slaughter. Continually keeping this secret was too much for one so young and she started to become sick. While being cared for by her mother the secret finally came out, she could hold it in no longer and instantly felt better. Sendril tried to remain calm but was horrified that her husband had kept this from her all this time. How could he? She did not know what to do and so brought the matter before council. Together they confronted Markaus who at first denied, then laughed before finally giving in. They would give in to no explanation or reasoning and banished him from the church and the city.

Sendra and Ilyrisyn cried together that night. There was nothing they could do, Markaus was already lost to them because of his hate. Sendra told herself she should have realised, the signs were all there but she had refused to acknowledge them until it was staring her in the face in the form of her sweet nine year old daughter. Sendra recovered in time, over the years returning to her cheery self, even marrying again to another devotee of Sarenrae five years later. Unfortunately for little Ilyrisyn, losing her father affected her permanently. That night she played his words over and over trying to understand why he had to leave, he had betrayed Sarenrae in a very serious manner, that of following another god and practising evil teachings. Most of all trying to teach such to a young innocent girl. They hid to pretect themselves and destroy their enemies. Ilyrisyn countered these thoughts with those of the teachings of Sarenrae, that to defeat evil, light must be shone on it. This she knew to be right but the war raged in her mind, her father was an intelligent man and had crafted his words with cunning. She did not sleep or eat for the next two days, causing much worry. She was watched over by another priest who determined there was nothing physically wrong with her and that it was merely grief she was going through and it would pass enough for her to move again soon. On the third day Ilyrisyn finally fell asleep exhausted and slept for another two days. When she awoke she wasn't quite the same. Some days she would seem to be herself but others she would scream or simply not talk. It was brushed off for a while as a simple coping mechanism. They were all to correct. Ilyrisyn's mind had split, unable to handle the conflict inside. Separating into two and erecting a barrier between, effectively giving herself two personalities. One was quite normal, acting just like she used to. The other was unfamiliar and new to the world though possessing alot of the same memories, she held the dark secrets of her father inside and the only remembrance of them, kept away from the other side, who remembered not. It was not discovered for what it truly was until several years later when her dark side grew stronger and as accustomed to the world as the other. Still each was not truly aware, feeling as if she had blacked out. When it was finally pieced together her life changed again.

It made no sense and little real help was able to be provided because of the extreme rarity of her condition. She was somehow able to function though only technically aware of half of her life. All attempts to help her heal failed. It was not a physical injury. They were hesitant to suggest it but she also refused to let anyone mess with her mind. She would make do, both of her. She invented a message system to talk to herself so she could be more aware of what she did. Writing small notes on a days activities as she went and keeping them in a small box in her room or on her person, always in the same pocket in a fold in the front of her shirts. She learnt of her dark thoughts and what might happen if people found out everything and she tried to hide her negative ways. Soon she began further training with the clerics and paladins. Due to her diverse nature she was not permitted to become a paladin much to one of hers disappointment. She was now a cleric of Sarenrae, permitted among the temple guards. Her divine abilities had been limited in some way, only able to accomplish and learn at half the speed of everyone else, though some days she was incapable of even the smallest of things. She wanted to see the world but her often unreliability greatly hindered her chances of being hired to guard travelers. The temple life was not a rich one, especially hers. Two years came and went before she was finally hired. A small group of five farmers needed some protection from bandits who had been terrorising them. Ilyrisyn and another cleric took the low paying job and left with the farmers. It was a small start but she would take anything offered. In fact she was asked for by the farmers personally, saying they knew her as children though she had forgotten them. When they reached the farm they were betrayed, surrounded by a dozen angry farmers with swords who demanded their surrender. One man revealed his face from the shadows. She recognised him instantly. Father.

Ilyrisyn and the other soldier were taken prisoner, the man being killed soon after. It was really only Ilyrisyn they wanted. They had heard of her disorder and Markaus guessed better than most. He intended to turn her to his side by manipulating her dark personality. He now led a small group of followers of Zon-Kuthon of his own, they were the bandits she had been hired to help against. They would be gone before anyone could find them here. They headed towards the mountains and stayed hidden deep inside the range. Several caves that they had commandeered provided a sort of home for them.

"Hello dearest daughter, I'm sorry I have not been there for you lately. I hope you will someday forgive me. Please do not feel like a prisoner here despite the bonds, I just want you to listen to me. Are you listening?" He would talk to her most days, whenever she would decide to be agreeable, which was very seldom at the beginning. But he treated her decently while forcing her to stay. He attempted to sway her to his side with notions of darkness, death and justice by destroying those that wronged them, making them regret their actions. "They must know the full extent of the consequences of their actions. I will end every goblin in the north and south, east and west! But I need you by my side. To show them their defeat in trying to end our family so many years ago. We are still strong." Ilyrisyn fortunately had no such hate stored up inside her. If she had a dark side it cared little for goblins alive or dead. But she did want power and strength. Eventually realizing her father would help her gain it she gave in and completed the minimum rituals necessary to gain his trust. Ilyrisyn splintered ever so slightly further, now a cleric of Zon-Kuthon and being granted several shadowy powers, keeping these things from herself. She was given a new weapon, a long spiked black chain to replace her shield and scimitar style. After a week the follower of Sarenrae hadn't shown herself and Maurkus began to think his plan worked. His beloved daughter was his once more. But her condition would never be broken so easily.

They attacked another camp of goblins hidden in the mountains, Ilyrisyn's new ablities were used to devastating effect in the dark caves, rooting out and destroying every last one. That night they camped in the caves, planning to head deeper into the mountains. One of the goblin captives had told them of many more camps that existed before dying. In the morning she woke up not remembering the last week. In a strange cave she slowly pieced together what happened. She was confronted by Maurkas as she went to leave and he tried to stop her, managing to knock her unconscious but taking a serious wound to his side also. She woke up once more in chains and not knowing how she demanded they release her. When Maurkas told her what happened and she saw the wound she had given him they released here again. She saw that she would never be allowed to gain any more power and would never be fully trusted while she followed her father. Taking the chance of his weakness due to the wound she had given him she decided to leave and was forced to kill two of them who tried to stop her with negative energy. She was no longer interested in the petty hate of her father and she realised he had weakened himself by going over to Zon-Kuthon. She left and journeyed back to Canorate, wondering how she would be received. For several months she avoided the searches for her and stayed away from Canorate, trying to decide what she would do now. She still had access to both gods divine powers even though they contrasted so much. She felt it was a great joke played by the gods on her to allow this, taking advantage of her disability. She wanted to be complete again. She had no idea how this would be possible or if it was at all. She wanders the land, protecting those in need as the cleric of Sarenrae and haunting the shadows bringing death to whatever evil got in the way of her quest forgreater power as a cleric of Zon-Kuthon.

TLDR: Her parents families were killed by goblins. Her dad hates the goblins and secretly follows zon-kuthon because of this. Her mum follows Sarenrae. Dad tries to corrupt Ilyrisyn, everyone finds out, he gets kicked out, Ilyrisyn breaks. Dad captures her and turns her dark side to him for a time. she follows both gods now, but only one at a time. And only in her own self-justified way. She is a wanderer now, unsure where her destiny lies.

I may not be full fighter, but I'm basically a fighter with a some skills points.

Is it possible that you might run more than 1 group, due to the volume of submissions?? Just curious...

I would be lying if I said that I had not considered it, but I am not sure. While I know the adventure pretty well, and most of the people submitting characters seem to be relatively veteran players who can give feedback as it goes, the fact remains that I haven't DM'd a PBP game before, and I am not entirely sure just how much effort it takes. All the same, I do have a fair amount of free time, and I'd be interested in doing more than one, so, you know, it's possible. I'm not sure yet, though. :/

woooow. no fighters or cavaliers? I am honestly shocked. we're bout to be defending the world from an army and no one wants to be charging through enemy ranks buffing whole armies? No one wants a pure feat-driven combat machine? (I see multiclassers, but surprisingly no pures.)

Sounds like we got a group with guts.

My kind of players.

The lack of any kind of Druid at all surprised me, too. But yes, I'm definitely not complaining. It should be interesting, to say the least.

Woo finally finished it to some degree of satisfaction. I needed to create a reason for her dark side to be dark not just, "im mad that my dad is gone!" so here it is. any criticism is welcome.

Quite a mouthful! I really like it though - I was a bit skeptical about the split-personality thing, but I think you put the background together in an interesting way.

Please don't take on two games if this is your first time DMing PBP. It's a lot different than DMing table top, and sometimes (most of the time) running two groups through the same content can feel more like a chore than fun. I'd rather get picked for a group that has your full attention than one that has half of it and in a situation where you could possibly get burnt out quickly.

If you start group 1 and a month down the line feel like it's easy-peasy then you can always start another group with players from this thread who didn't get picked the first time around. I mean feel free to ignore me, but that's what I've learned in my last year or so of DMing various different games here on the boards, not all of which lasted.

Seens like sound advice.

I don't usually write such long backstories but I felt this one needed the extra information to properly explain her current state.

I'm equally surprised by the lack of a cavalier. From the description this AP seems written for one.

Sorry for the delay in submission, but here is a quick post with a link to my character > Bran Morigon

Human Fighter - I realize he's listed at 2nd level, and I need to tweak all of his stats, including redoing his primary abilities to fall under the 15 pt buy, but his background is solid to give you a feel of where he's coming from. I will update that as well to reflect his 5th level status before Saturday's deadline.

I have updated Saron, here is the link.

I seem to remember Yorick expressing a preference against Cavaliers. But it's not like we're entirely short on martiality, and even Edgar has a healthy amount of beef to him.

I appreciate the advise. Like I said, I'm still mulling it over. Especially since there are so many good submissions, I'd definitely like to run two groups. I'm not really worried about getting burned out or not having the time.

I definitely just want to put together a great game. If I think I can do that for more than one group at a time, I will. Otherwise, not. Splitting them up with an interval makes a lot of sense, too. I don't know, I'm still up in the air about it. I still have time to decide though.

So far what it seems to require more than anything is time, communication, patience, and willingness, which are things that I have. And like I said, it also is boosting my spirits to find that most people are a) at least somewhat experience, and b) really, really, really excited (As am I!)

No, yeah, it's definitely really detailed, which is awesome.

I'm not sure what classes 3.5 had available when this was module was originally written. I do know that it came out before the Player's Handbook 2 / Tome of Magic / Book of the Nine Swords. Regardless, I'm somewhat wary of introducing a Cavalier into it, for reasons that will be apparent as we go through it.

If someone had submitted one, I would have done more research on groups that have come before, to see if there are actually any problems that go along with it or if I was just anticipating some incorrectly. But since no one did, I'll just continue to assume that it could potentially be problematic.

I'm so glad that you didn't make an "I used to be an adventurer until I took a dire boar to the knee" joke. But really, I like it quite a bit, I like the idea of someone longing to be an adventurer just for the sake of adventuring. It's something that is sometimes overlooked in these games, but who the hell wouldn't just want to do it?.

As I've said elsewhere in this thread, there are lots of ruins around, it definitely would not be hard to find some people to team up with, if looking for an adventuring group is where you want your character to begin.

You, the same thing. Adventuring for the sake of adventuring, I love it.

@Tie My Shoelace - I got your PM. I have a few errands to run, but I'll reply before the night's over.

I got advice! Shishka says jumping up and down holding her hand up...

Don't eat the yellow snow she says with a giggle

Suspense of waiting for the group to be chosen is killing me :P

Alright, I think my character, Bran Morigon, is finished. I probably missed a few things, but for the most part, he's solid.

Good luck, everybody!
