BACKGROUND:

When a newly hatched kobold emerges, like most animals, it tends to bond with the first thing it encounters. Though something seemed odd about the soft-skinned, tall, pointy-eared thing he first laid eyes on, it somehow still felt all right. Food was easy to find, shelter was abundant, and no immediate dangers presented themselves to him, despite the oddness of his environment.

In truth, he had not hatched in a kobold warren, like most eggs, but was instead inside a great tree. It was the home of a half-elf who had somehow recovered his egg from poachers and took him in, instead of simply crushing him or cooking him for breakfast. It took a few years for the blur of language and civilization to start making sense, but he eventually started to put the pieces together, once complete thoughts formed more easily.

Unfortunately, as all out-of-place youth inevitably do, the young reptile found outlets for his urges and instincts. He began to make use of his naturally dark coloration, nocturnal nature and small size to abscond with trinkets and morsels when no one was awake or looking. As he grew accustomed to being unnoticed, he became more bold with his thefts, until one day, he stole from his surrogate father without realizing it.

The half-elf was indeed upset, but rather than lash out at the youngling, he asked questions. He observed reactions. And he made a decision. After a short interrogation, he proposed a solution: Krazzix would only steal what he was directed to, and would immediately bring it home for review. This would allow his guardian to ensure nothing was truly lost, and return valuables to their owners with explanations. Eventually, it became something of a game to the citizens. An item would be marked, the owner would be told only that something of theirs was targeted, and Krazzix would make the attempt. If successful, he brought the item home to celebrate, and it was returned the next morning. These games were interspersed with more benign activites, including locksmithing for unfortunate neighbors, high-altitude deliveries and construction aid, and various jobs befitting a nimble, acrobatic little thief. Through careful education, Krazzix was taught a careful balance between larceny and empathy, and he became as much a thief as a local celebrity. As much as people disliked finding things missing, they did like his help around town with mundane concerns and efficient errand running. It made a big difference that a town built within a forest of gigantic redwood trees had ample call for leaping and climbing from place to place. He made quite a name for himself with his bounding, scrambling antics and his good (albeit mischievous) nature.

What cemented his place in his home, however, was the war. It came to his home, albeit briefly, but the fighting was intense. While instructed to stay out of sight, Krazzix felt a pang of guilt as he observed skirmishes in the woods and the rivers. For some reason, he was completely restless watching. Knowing full well that loud, distracted soldiers would make good targets, he began to implement his own brand of warfare. Bowstrings would snap, quivers would empty early, armor straps would fall loose, and horses would come untied and run off. Rations would disappear, packs would come unbuckled, and polearms would snap in the middle of a battle. What truly earned his fame, however, was stealing an important looking scroll with a bright red wax seal on it. Bringing it home with glee, he watched his father's face light up with surprise: he had stolen battle plans and orders from the enemy courier. the invasion ended shortly thereafter.

Krazzix has found plenty of opportunities to get out of the house and see a bit of the world, but despite all the wonders and oddities he's run into so far, none were as strange, and as surprising, as the itchy spots on his shoulders. He hadn't noticed them growing up, but over the course of his upbringing, they had actually grown more irritating, first growing into itchy lumps, then really itchy horns, then just sore limbs, then not-so-itchy hands, then little wings that didn't itch anymore. Upon asking father about it, he was told they were quite likely dragon wings that came with his black scales, and it meant he had the blood of dragons in him. Thinking about what he'd heard about dragons in the stories of their awesome might and great wisdom, he was quite excited at the thought of being part dragon, and now, more than ever, is quite enthralled at the idea of meeting a real dragon.

Krazzix now lives by simple rules:
1. Be honest about who you're stealing from and return what you've stolen, unless it's your enemy; then make his life really difficult until he gives up and goes away or if he's really evil just hurt him when he's not looking.
2. Help out people wherever you can and try to follow their rules, because they like it when you help and do things their way; this way they like you more, play more thief games with you, and give you nice things sometimes and hopefully call you friend instead of trying to shoot you with arrows and put you in a cage.
3. Listen to stories about dragons and always try to find out more about them so one day you can meet one and be friends with it and learn how to be like a dragon so you'll be mighty and awesome and wise one day.

Well...simple to him, anyway.
