El Garrapata
|
El Garrapata slurps his stew loudly, making satisfied noises. "This is good! I cannot taste the stone, though."
He nods as the others share their motives. "I am El Garrapata! I am the CHAMPION of the oppressed, the GUARDIAN of the innocent and the PUNISHER of the NAUGHTY! I AM A PATHFINDER!" He looks around and nods, satisfied that his oratory skills have once more conveyed his meaning.
Sidi Yawgu
|
Cleaned and dressed once more in his Zenj robe, Sidi chews on the roasted meat on a skewer. He quietly watches as the others begin to answer Janira's question. Despite himself, he chuckles at El's simplistic but emphatic declaration. I hope that his combat instincts are stronger than his wit.
"My reason is one of gratefulness. Two years ago, I was a galley slave on some pirate ship--I could not tell you the name--when members of Liberty's Blade captured the ship. I do not know what they were looking for, but they freed all of the slaves and delivered us to safe haven in Garundi. They made sure we knew it was the Pathfinders who freed us and asked us to spread word of their fair deed. I made my way back to my homeland only to find my family and tribe long gone. Ultimately, I learned about Sharrowsmith's connection to the Pathfinders and began serving there, hoping to join Liberty's Blade and pass on the gift they gave me."

"I've worked for the Dark Archive for a long time now...and honestly, why would I want to be or do anything else, and how could I if I did? I've never belonged anywhere, but I love to learn. I'm sick of the torch-wielding mobs - metaphorical AND literal - and it would be nice to turn the tables on them."
| Janira Gavix, Pathfinder |
"I was to meet one of our calling, and head in to Oparra in Taldor. To meet with people. Heal where we could. I was in that tavern. I just heard you folks talking. I know the Pathfinders, but it always seemed dangerous, maybe reckless." He pauses and lets his armor hit the sack.
"I'm not in dereliction of my duty. They aren't waiting on me specifically. I'll join them when I can. Besides, this should be good experience. I don't have an...a lot...of experience.
"Um. Does anyone have a wooden cup I could use tonight?"
"Wait. You mean you aren't even a recruit?" *Facepalm!*
Fomalhaut

"Until you've been dead as long as I have, you do not really appreciate life. I suppose I'm here to enjoy myself - and if, through some miracle, I can teach the niece of Zon-Kuthon here how to do likewise, so much the better."
| Janira Gavix, Pathfinder |
Hallimir opens his pack and pulls out his mess kit and fills a bowl with some soup. He finds a comfortable spot on the ground next to Tawner, passes him a mug and leans back against his pack.
“well, as I mentioned before, I grew up in a noble Elven home; but as you can see, I am only half-Elven. As such, I hold no claim to my family’s titles or lands. That honour” he says sarcastically, “falls to my older, full blooded, brother Ulanor."
"Ovee the years I grew tired of his popularity among the family and our subjects…of always living in his shadow, always knowing that I would never meet that mark”, he pauses slightly, his tone changing from sarcasm to one of relief, “And so I left….I am here to make my own way, to gain my own fame and my own title so that one day, even the Great Ulanor Duskrin will know of my deeds."
"See technically, by my way of thinking Hallimar, you're actually a half-huwoman, making your brother completely lacking in huwoman blood."

"Yeah slaver sucks. A lot of my folk are slaves in Chelaxian holdings. My family was lucky. My dad's a porter in Eastgate, in Absalom. I've never met Sharrowsmith but have heard a little bit about him through the Deans at the Lodge."

"Oo! Do you know Gwendolyne the Strange!? I think she's in the Archive too. She's a totally badass librarian! She has a really cute owl that says 'whoo' all the time, and once she even time-traveled! She's so lucky!"
Sidi Yawgu
|
"It is not very exciting at the Lodge if you are not a real Pathfinder. Take inventory. Move crates. Move them back. Take inventory again," Sidi relays with a slight smile suggesting that he was not truly miserable working for the Lodge's front in the Expanse.
"Why did you, Janira, become a Pathfinder?"
Airyn Skystalker
|
Airyn retrieves his mess kit and begins eating his soup, savoring the simple fare with long slurps.
With an air of contentment, he answers the halfling's question, "I became a Pathfinder to aid in the Society's mission to free the Elemental Lord Ranginori from his prison within the Untouchable Opal. It is a cause I believe in, and one I hope will benefit my home on the Plane of Air."
Airyn Skystalker
|
The sylph smiles sadly, "I am not privy to the schemes of the Decemvirate. I know not where the Duke of Thunder rests, only that he exists and the society sees fit to set him free."
El Garrapata
|
"Duke of Thunder? I once heard the tale of the Dukes of Hazzard. They were oppressed by the evil Sheriff and the Boss of Hogs. But they fought BACK, just as good folks must! I am sure that if your THUNDER DUKE is out there, we shall FREE him!" El Garrapata thumps his comrade on the back in a reassuring fashion.
Hallimir Duskrin
|
"See technically, by my way of thinking Hallimar, you're actually a half-huwoman, making your brother completely lacking in huwoman blood."
Hallimir appears less than impressed at this remark and takes a swig of his soup rather than respond.
GM, how do you determine the Perception DC to notice something like this?
".... So Hallimir, you mentioned 'titles and lands'?"
"....Yes, my father is the lord of a small amount of land in Kyonin just outside of Idaria."
"Why did you, Janira, become a Pathfinder?"
Hallimir looks at Janira, waiting for her answer.
| Janira Gavix, Pathfinder |
"Why did you, Janira, become a Pathfinder?"
"Originally it was to get away home, and my six little brothers and sisters and get out and see the world and taste interesting food. But... eventually I got deep into the archives, and found I had a talent for history, and lore. And well here I am. I've been on a few missions since my confirmation but this is my first time leading a group. I was sort of worried about you all but after that meal, I'm sure we'll make it. One only need remember Selmius Foster’s race against a marid and efreeti on the isle of Jalmeray, to see that nothing is truly impossible and every situation can end in victory."
"YEEE-HAW! You could have been a bard El."
Eventually Janira reaches into her pack and pulls out her journal. "So I took some notes about leading adventuring parties before we left--NOTES ARE VERY IMPORTANT. You can't tell a nilbog from a goblin without good notes. But it says here that we need to 'post a watch' before we go to bed."
Sidi Yawgu
|
"Good instruction. It would not do to have a centaur hunting parting stumble upon us while we were unaware."
Sidi unfastens several ties on his pack, removing pieces of reinforced leather armor. These pieces he arranges neatly next to his bedroll and then folds his robe and stows it in the pack.
While he tends to his gear, he comments, "I would take the watch before dawn, if possible. I did not rest last night and could use the sleep."

Something catches Karayan's eye, a dull gray-brown, banded carapace one might expect to see on an armadillo. It is poking through the hedges the party just passed by. The problem is though the thing--whatever it is--is too big to be an ordinary armadillo, and probably weighs about 40 lbs. Second, as it rises its blunt head frilled with intricately-feathered mouth parts it is apparently an insect of some sort.
Karayan notices the blue-framed one. The others are too far away to notice yet.
Each character may make one knowledge check. Open all the spoilers that apply.
Before he can do more than note the tremendous parasite, it and its unseen fellows launch themselves at the party!
Important Note the bugs' jumping charges are full-round actions. They are still in the air on their way to pouncing upon Alexis and Nina (and Monty) as round 1 begins. See the map for their color-coded starting points and landing zones.

Following his early morning watch, Sidi dons the studded leathers that he had set out the prior evening. The change in outfit gives him a much more martial bearing. He carries his pack easily and continues to use his great club to help him keep his balance along the trail.
K: Nature: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
"Be careful. These vermin are predators," he warns as a giant flea bursts out of the underbrush.

You never see the one that gets you. ;)
Up to this point only Airyn and Tawner have noticed them, though I am sure El Garrapata's Garrapata-sense is tingling. I'll assume they point out one or more of them out to everyone else. Currently the bugs are barrelling (full-round charge action) through the forest, high overhead like ninjas on Naruto.
Sidi probably doesn't see the one coming directly for him as he will be he'll still be flat-footed when it hits.

Knowledge (Nature): 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (8) + 0 = 8
Something catches his eye and fear floods his heart as several ancient bodies lunge out at group.
“Ahh. Something!” He yells to the group, “Get down everyone.”
Tawner, forgetting to arm himself, stops in place. He focuses on Sarenrae. Muttering at a fevered pace and lifting his hands, he feels power, true power encircling him...and the others.
Tawner casts Bless: Each ally gains a +1 morale bonus on attack rolls and on saving throws against fear effects.

I know I posted yesterday. Goblins ate it.

Wait a minute; it looks like RED, the one I hit, is the one who pwned Hallimir - in that case, the Strength penalty it took makes a difference. Hallimir should never have been knocked out (nearly, but not quite), and should be fully healed now.
